The handmaidens of Naboo are some of the coolest — and probably least explored — characters in "Star Wars" history. They served queen-turned-senator Padmé Amidala (Natalie Portman) dutifully in "Episode I - The Phantom Menace" and its sequel, "Attack of the Clones." But aside from the odd switcharoo and near-death situation, the films don't reveal much about the handmaidens' interior lives, or their personal connection to Padmé.
Worse still, Padmé's most famous decoy, Sabé (Keira Knightley), was never seen again after her introduction in "The Phantom Menace." That's probably due to the fact that Knightley was off shooting a new franchise, the "Pirates of the Caribbean" films, while George Lucas continued work on the prequels. But that left a kind of void in "Attack of the Clones" and "Episode III -- Revenge of the Sith," one that novels and comics would only fill years later.
A recent Darth Vader-centric storyline even Sabé's arc in earnest.

Stories revolving around giant mechanical robots or mechs have existed since the earliest of sci-fi classics, most notably in H.G. Wells’ War of the Worlds, where Martians used mechanical ‘Tripods’ to lay waste to humanity. In later years, Japan’s obsession with mechs imparted more complex dynamics to the genre, which evolved into narratives concerning the relationship between human beings and sentient robots, culminating in some particular Gundam series and Transformers.
Netflix’s latest release, Mech Cadets, an adaptation of Greg Pak and Takeshi Miyazawa’s Mech Cadets Yu, combines some of the best mech series out there, like Neon Genesis Evangelion and Pacific Rim, to present a vibrant, fresh take on the mech genre. While the lively 3D animation might hook some of the younger generation onto the series, for veteran fans of the genre, it fails to offer anything new or exceptional that hasn’t been done already.

Award-winning US producer and distributor Karin Chien, whose latest co-production, “Man in Black,” is one of two films by Chinese director Wang Bing running in Cannes’ official selection, shared her experience with the crowd during a masterclass at Cannes Docs, the Film Market section dedicated to documentary films.
“Man in Black” premiered at a special screening in Cannes on May 22. Wang’s other film selected in this year’s edition is main competition title “Youth.”
In the talk, moderated by Documentary Association of Europe co-founder Brigid O’Shea, Chien put on her distributor’s hat to talk about a job she said was “not pitched enough but [represented] some of the most meaningful work she [had] ever done.”

There is no shortage of behind-the-scenes stories about the making of the Star Wars Sequel Trilogy. Plenty has been written about how it was J.J. Abrams and Michael Arndt’s idea to excise Luke Skywalker almost completely from The Force Awakens, ditching the notes and outlines George Lucas had handed over to Disney during the Lucasfilm deal. And how Rian Johnson returned to some of Lucas’ original Sequel Trilogy ideas for The Last Jedi, especially when it came to Luke training a new generation of Jedi. Meanwhile, Lucas’ idea for our heroes to explore the “microbiotic world” of the Whills remains untouched.
Then there’s all the drama surrounding the making of the final chapter of the trilogy. As we all know now, “creative differences” saw director Colin Trevorrow step away from Episode IX. The original script, titled “Duel of the Fates,” which he wrote with Derek Connelly, was ditched...

This article contains She-Hulk: Attorney at Law finale spoilers
She-Hulk: Attorney at Law finished off its first season and it was a lot. Maybe it was a little. Or both at the same time. Either way, it was crazy and the fact that Marvel hyped it up with a trailer made entirely of old footage except for two brief shots of Hulk vs. Abomination was kind of brilliant considering where it led to.
As the final episode exploded in character callbacks and hackneyed twists turning into an oversaturated fight scene that Jen Walters felt did a disservice to her season-long storyline, the episode suddenly went full meta as She-Hulk confronted K.E.V.I.N., the AI behind the creation of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Things got cute with references to the X-Men and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, but ultimately, Jen erased Hulk’s grand return despite K.E.

This article contains Thor: Love and Thunder spoilers.
The Prince of Power has arrived! In the final post-credit scene of Thor: Love and Thunder, a humiliated Zeus (Russell Crowe) plots his revenge against Thor and the other superheroes who take the worship due to gods. He sends them a god in the form of a hero with his son, Hercules, played by Ted Lasso’s Brett Goldstein. Love and Thunder doesn’t give us much about the new hero, as we hear Goldstein growl only one line.
But Hercules has a long history in the comics, which give us some indication of the character’s role in the MCU. Looking at his stories before and within Marvel Comics, we can see how Hercules could restore a sense of high adventure!

This post contains spoilers for She-Hulk: Attorney at Law Episode 2
And just like that, Hulk is off-planet again. Midway through the second episode of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, Jen phones her cousin Bruce to get his blessing on taking a new job, which would require her to defend Bruce’s old nemesis from The Incredible Hulk, Emil Blonsky aka Abomination. Bruce of course agrees but then reveals that he can’t do more because he’s on a spaceship headed for Sakaar, the same ship whose sudden appearance in episode one caused the accident that led to Jen getting Bruce’s gamma-irradiated blood in her system. While it makes sense to have Bruce featured heavily in the first episode and then go away, to bring in viewers but not overshadow the main character, this plot beat may be more than a narrative convention.

[This story contains spoilers for She-Hulk episode two.]
Being a Hulk is now a family business. But Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) and Jennifer Walters (Tatiana Maslany) may not be the only members of their gamma-irradiated clan. The second episode of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, directed by Kat Coiro and written by Jessica Gao, sees the Hulk once again headed to space, this time on a Sakaarian ship, similar to the one featured in Thor: Ragnarok (2017), and presumably the same one that caused the accident that created She-Hulk in the debut episode. Despite She-Hulk serving as a sitcom, there does seem to be something larger happening between the scenes, a revelation that could finally lead to a new Hulk movie.
Much of Phase Four of the MCU has placed an emphasis on family and legacy, with characters taking on new roles, like Scarlet Witch, Loki, Captain America (Sam Wilson), and Spider-Man. Others...

(This article contains spoilers for the first two episodes of "She-Hulk: Attorney At Law." Please proceed with caution.)
In the pilot episode of "She-Hulk: Attorney At Law," True Believers learned that Jennifer Walters got her Hulk powers in the Marvel Cinematic Universe during a car crash while on a road trip with her cousin, Bruce Banner. Both bloody after the wreck, his blood dripped onto Jen and into her bloodstream, mixing his gamma-irradiated blood with hers and triggering a transformation.
While this is more or less in line with her comic origin (aside from the blood transfusion happening accidentally on the show), one hugely important detail that sets the Disney+ series apart from the source material is the spaceship that causes the crash. A Sakaaran vessel descends from the sky directly in front of Bruce and Jen's car, blocking the road ahead and causing the cousins to overturn their car while swerving off the highway.

I must be on something of a subconscious James Bond kick at the moment. I’ve just finished re-watching the Daniel Craig Bond films, and then this book caught my eye. Dynamite’s had the rights to do James Bond for a while now, and in general they’ve been doing a decent job. They’ve certainly attracted some great writers along the way, names like Warren Ellis, Christos Gage, and Greg Pak have all graced the pages of 007’s adventures. This time it’s the turn of Phillip Kennedy Johnson, no slouch himself. Eisner-nominated, he has worked for Marvel and DC for small books like Avengers and Superman. I’m expecting good things.
Let’s take a look.

“I am your father.” Forty years later, those words remain one of cinema’s greatest twists. Even if you’ve seen The Empire Strikes Back hundreds of times, you can’t help but get a shiver down your spine when Luke’s greatest enemy reveals his identity, showing that good and evil remain inextricably linked.
While author Adam Christopher isn’t promising a twist quite so monumental, he does have plans for a similarly shocking reveal for his upcoming novel Shadow of the Sith. Set after Return of the Jedi, Shadow of the Sith pairs Luke Skywalker with his ally Lando Calrissian when a Sith kidnaps the latter’s daughter. In addition to Sith assassin Ochi of Bestoon, who was first introduced in The Rise of Skywalker, Luke and Lando must also deal with a mysterious new Sith warrior, a woman known to the heroes.

Louverture Films, the production company founded by actor Danny Glover and Joslyn Barnes, is moving into television as well as animation, gaming and installation works. With two new principal partners in situ, the expansion has enlisted a host of creatives, including directors Apichatpong Weerasethakul and Lucrecia Martel.
Co-founded by Glover and Barnes in 2005 — alongside long-time partners Susan Rockefeller and the Bertha Foundation’s Tony Tabatznik — the company has brought on board Sawsan Asfari and Jeffrey Clark as principal partners. Variety understands that the new partners will allow Louverture to access more funding resources.
In addition, producer Karin Chien, who on Sunday delivered a rousing Sundance Institute Producing Fellows’ keynote, is becoming a partner and executive VP. Meanwhile, Barnes has been promoted to president while Glover remains CEO and co-founder.
Louverture, named after Haitian revolutionary leader Toussaint Louverture, has built its reputation on international and arthouse films and a strong theatrical documentary slate.

The International Association of Media Tie-In Writers (Iamtw) recognizes the wide range of authors who work on media tie-ins. Often overlooked, these writers craft exciting tales using beloved characters and settings of franchises including the likes of Mike Hammer, Firefly, Murder She Wrote, James Bond, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Star Wars, Doctor Who, and Star Trek. These stories can be original adventures, or adaptations of movies or television episodes. They include all genres and a wide range of lengths and formats.
To recognize the accomplishments of the unsung authors in this particular field, the Iamtw sponsors the annual Scribe Awards. This year’s awards have six categories to highlight excellence in Novels, Short Stories, Audio Dramas, Young Adult/Middle Grade works, and Graphic Novels.

“The Monkey King” is inspired by the famous Chinese tale “Journey to the West,” in which a special monkey fights gods, demons, dragons — and his own hubris. The film is executive produced by Chow, with “Over the Moon’s” Peilin Chou and “How to Train Your Dragon 2’s Kendra Haaland producing. Anthony Stacchi (“The Boxtrolls”) is directing.

Luke Skywalker’s unexpected return on The Mandalorian last year reignited fan theories and speculation about the beloved Jedi hero’s involvement in upcoming Star Wars project. Will Mark Hamill’s CGI likeness return for The Mandalorian season 3 with little Grogu in tow? Is he destined to become a character who casts his shadow on all of the upcoming live-action series set after Return of the Jedi? Or was his last-minute rescue in Mando season 2 finale just a cameo designed to shatter the internet?
The completely unsatisfying answer is that we simply don’t know what’s next for Luke. We know where his story is ultimately headed, thanks to The Last Jedi, but we know he got up to many adventures between the Original Trilogy and his return in The Force Awakens. It’s not unreasonable to speculate that some of these untold Luke stories could intersect with The Mandalorian,...

Russell Crowe is in Thor: Love and Thunder. Cool. Russell Crowe is playing a god in Thor: Love and Thunder. Cooler. Russell Crowe is playing the most incorrigible, inappropriately horny god-father of them all as Zeus. Impossibly cool.
Crowe revealed in an interview to Joy Breakfast With the Murphys that “I’m gonna get on my bicycle. I’m gonna ride up to Disney Fox Studios, and around about 9:15 I shall be Zeus!”
He also notes that this is his last day of filming on Thor: Love and Thunder. “It’s my last day of Zeus-ing about and I’m going to enjoy it.”
Hopefully “Zeus-ing about” means he’ll be behaving poorly and getting his absolute ass handed to him by Hera, all with that trademark Taika Waititi wit and humor about it.
The introduction of the denizens of Mt. Olympus to the MCU is a pretty momentous occasion.

As part of day two of DC’s big comic con pandemic substitute, DC Comics has made a metric ton of comics available for free online. Included in that passel of books are several from Milestone Comics – some classic issues of Icon, Hardware, and Static Shock, along with Milestone Returns #0, the kickoff to the big return of the Black-owned comic company slated for February. And there’s a pretty big surprise contained within.
The book is written by Reggie Hudlin and Greg Pak, with art from DC Publisher Jim Lee, Brothers Bond artist Ryan Benjamin; Teen Titans artist Khoi Pham; and Milestone co-founder Denys Cowan. Each artist gets a different introduction, and Benjamin and Hudlin rework Static’s origin to be a touch more timely.
In this new Milestone, Static gets his powers by being teargassed at a Black Lives Matter protest. On its face, this is a fairly big shift from his comics origin.

The Star Wars extended universe is a treasure trove of interconnected fiction, with various books, graphic novels, games and now TV shows telling untold stories and filling in plot gaps. And it seems Darth Vader is going to be getting a new narrative that links him more closely to the events of The Rise of Skywalker.
Writer Greg Pak has teased that the continuing Darth Vader comic book storyline will see the Sith Lord embarking on a quest that will have him explore “some great unexplored territory.” Further details on what they may involve remain unclear, but a new theory says that the writer might just have been hinting at an adventure in which Vader discovers the Sith planet of Exegol, where the final battle of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker took place.
Exegol was once a fertile planet that was bled dry of its resources by Sith explorers,...

Star Wars is going to introduce a twist in Darth Vader’s narrative that somehow connects him to the last movie in the Skywalker Saga.
Darth Vader #1 had the former Chosen One going on a quest to find his son and seek vengeance on those who hid him from the Empire. The dark lord eventually ended up on Tatooine and Coruscant and even got to reunite with his wife Padme. Of course, the next issue revealed the truth behind the Senator’s phantom, but it still served as a poignant moment for Vader who is continually succumbing to the dark side. Now, writer Greg Pak is embarking on a new story arc with the sixth issue, one that will apparently see Palpatine’s apprentice go toe-to-toe with his master for lying about taking care of his personal matters.
Here’s what the author had to say about the next narrative...

Star Wars: Darth Vader #1 ended on one of the most shocking cliffhangers in Sw comics, as the Sith Lord came face to helmet with his beloved late wife, Padme Amidala. Of course, fans were left wondering how Padme could somehow be back in the flesh during the post-Empire Strikes Back period. Well, the second issue in Greg Pak and Raffaele Ienco’s relaunched Darth Vader series is now out, and as you might expect, there’s a twist in the tale.
As many had theorized, the truth is that this is not actually Padme. However, there’s a good reason even Vader was fooled by the lookalike, and that’s because it’s Sabe, the queen’s handmaiden who was such a dead ringer for Padme that she served as a decoy for the Naboo monarch in The Phantom Menace. Fans will remember that she was played by a young Keira Knightley.

The first issue of the new Star Wars comic series centering around Darth Vader delivered a shocking twist by reuniting Anakin and Padme Amidala. But the preview pages from the second issue reveal that this version of the character might not be who Vader thinks she is.
Many people believe that Star Wars is essentially the tragic story of Anakin Skywalker, from a boy who dreamed of exploring the stars to a Jedi Knight of the Council, his fall to the Dark Side of the Force, and ultimately, his redemption through his son, Luke. While Disney’s Sequel Trilogy might trample on that argument in the favor of exploring new characters and stories, the tale of the Chosen One will always hold a special place in the heart of this fandom. Now, Marvel’s new comic series called Star Wars: Darth Vader promises to delve deeper into the psyche of...

While Mark Hamill’s Luke Skywalker will be part of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, reportedly as a Force Ghost, the character is also cropping up in other Star Wars media. The officially-licensed Star Wars comics from Marvel have provided extensive backstory and fillers to explain gaps between different parts of the saga, giving fans some intriguing connections between characters and existing movies. And a new issue of the comics series will continue this approach by linking Luke to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
The plot, which you can see in Star Wars #71, takes place between A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back. Luke is part of a Rebel mission to find a new base, and is trying to throw off the Empire by travelling to Sergia, an Inner Rim world. During his time on the planet, Luke meets Warba, a junker with some Force sensitivity, who...

Nothing hits the nostalgia sweet spot better than a good old issue of Marvels ‘What If?’ line. These stand alone alternate takes on Marvel comics continuity are fondly remembered by readers who were around at their start. We are currently in the age of fan service where yesterdays readers are todays writers who are ultimately writing fan fiction. Because of this the ‘What If?’ line has gaind a whole new following of fans and sadly speculators as some of these issues tie into modern continuity. Also the ‘What If?’ is soon to be part of the Disney+ service with a animated feature. This series will obviously be more focused on alternate takes on the McU but I bet because of new interest in an old classic by newer fans we will see a spike in prices for back issues of ‘What If?’ And who knows maybe we will see some...

Marvel's Star Wars comic is coming to an end in November, but you probably shouldn't be too worried about that.
As revealed in Marvel Comics' November solicitations, the publisher's main Star Wars book is coming to an end with issue #75, which will also conclude the current "Rebels and Rogues" storyline by Greg Pak and Phil Noto. Since its launch in January 2015, with an issue that sold 1 million copies, Star Wars has been the flagship book of Marvel's line of comics set in the galaxy far, far away.
You shouldn't be too worried about the end of the book, though. For one thing, Marvel loves publishing brand-new first issues whenever it can to boost sales. That's likely what's happening here since the cancellation is so close to the release of The Rise of Skywalker in December. What better way to capitalize on the release of the...

Under the Marvel banner, it appears Star Wars fans will be given a fight that they may not have necessarily known they needed. As far as longed-for battles go, Chewbacca and Darth Vader may not have been high up on your list, but now that it’s been spoken into existence, it sounds like a pretty kickass idea.
And now that you’ve heard it, you can prepare to experience the matchup later this fall once Star Wars #74 releases.
In terms of practicality – while you can’t really say the grounds on which walking fuzz-balls and Sith Lords are really practical – a hand-to-hand fight with Darth Vador doesn’t sound like the best idea for the Millenium Falcon’s co-pilot. But a quick look at the cover for the upcoming issue indicates that this is exactly what’s going to happen come November.

The first issue is a dense but exciting read. I say dense because it packs alot into the opening and it has to as it is setting up a story only three issue in length. Coming to this from Weapon X, which was also penned by Greg Pak I thought it would be accessible and to a degree it is. But at the same time it makes a lot of references to Weapon H and Immortal Hulk. So I am assuming accessibility comes from a readers enjoyment of one or more of those three series. What it may lack in new reader friendliness it makes up for in levels of fun. There is a subtle Incredible Hulk #181 homage cover to get the ball rolling. I also like the proclamation on the cover,...
