European cinema giant Vue is partnering with the British Film Institute to create more exhibition opportunities for British, independent and international movies.
From May, the cinema chain is set to screen a series of films curated by the BFI across all of its venues in the U.K. The program will be called “BFI Presents” and films will screen at Vue’s 88 movie theaters across the country.
Vue and the BFI have a special connection given the exhibition chain’s CEO and founder Tim Richards was appointed chairman of the film org in February 2021. However, the Canadian executive tells Variety that discussions for such an initiative were underway well before the pandemic, and that his desire to bring more independent fare to Vue cinemas “predates [his] chairmanship.”
“We know there’s a market for independent, foreign and British films,” Richards tells Variety. “We want to try and get those films out to our customers.

U.K. cinemas remain shuttered due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, and while some of the large chains with deep pockets have the wherewithal to ride out the crisis, independent cinemas are suffering. Some U.K. distributors have come up with solutions to remedy this.
Modern Films was due to release Haifaa Al-Mansour’s festival favorite “The Perfect Candidate” theatrically on March 27, but instead released it online on Curzon Home Cinema, the BFI Player and its own website. Customers choosing to rent the film via Modern’s website will see a drop-down menu at the purchase point that allows them to select and support a cinema of their choice. Part of the proceeds will go directly back to the cinema.
Similarly, 606 Distribution, which has released Nora Fingscheidt’s Berlin winner “System Crasher” online via Vimeo, gives renters the option to select a cinema of their choice who will receive 10% of the after-tax profit.

Helena Bonham Carter has made a habit out of playing fantastical, eccentric characters. The British actress has cut off heads as the zany Red Queen in "Alice in Wonderland," cursed helpless muggles as Bellatrix Lestrange in "Harry Potter," and even served up fresh, hot meat (not the good kind) pies as Mrs. Lovett in "Sweeney Todd." In "The Lone Ranger," which opens this week, she plays a woman who runs a brothel house.
But what about the woman behind these uniquely outrageous characters? Below, we run down 25 little-known facts about Bonham-Carter, including the roles she almost played and her side business that helps jazz up your jeans.
1. She is the first cousin of Baroness Jane Bonham-Carter. She is also the great-granddaughter of H.H. Asquith who was British Prime Minister from 1908 to 1916.
2. She was denied admission to King's College, Cambridge University, but not because she was a bad student; the...

In what might be the biggest “Well, duh” of the week, as Hollywood Insider’s Nicole Sperling reports, Columbia Pictures is planning a sequel to The Kung Fu Karate Kid, seeing as the Will and Jada Smith-produced, Jaden Smith-starring remake to the 1984 original kicked such serious butt at the box office last weekend. They don’t have a script or story yet, but that’s where I come in. I’ve got the plot all worked out.
Since the current movie takes place in China (therefore borrowing the whole underdog-fish-out-of-water story line from the original Karate Kid II), the sequel should find Dre,...

Twittered to Death: Patrick Swayze (identified by the BBC as "Dirty Dancing star Patrick Swayze") was the victim of a cruel practical joke after "Florida radio station Kiss FM posted a Twitter message saying the 56-year-old had passed away. It was later removed." After that worm got out of the can, "...the rumour spread quickly across the internet." Even his Wikipedia entry got changed to reflect his false mortality. Swayze has been in the news alot ever since he was ."...diagnosed with advanced stage four pancreatic cancer in January last year." http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/8058836.stm Thats one negative aspect to this Internet of ours. A lie spreads faster in cyberspace than on a primary school playground. Celebrities often die for a few hours, until their press people release a statement to the effect that they are alive. I guess the people who start these rumours are...
