Screen Media has acquired North American rights to “9 Bullets,” a new crime thriller with “Game of Thrones” star Lena Headey and “Avatar’s” Sam Worthington. The studio is planning a day-and-date release in April.
“9 Bullets” centers on a showgirl (Headey), who risks everything when she rescues a young boy after his family is murdered by her ex-boyfriend, who also happens to be the local crime-boss (Worthington). Now on the run, she makes a desperate attempt to get the boy safely to his uncle in South Dakota.
The film is directed and written by Gigi Gaston (“Rip it Off”) and also stars Dean Scott Vasquez (“Transformers: Rise of the Beasts”), Cam Gigandet (“The Magnificent Seven”), La La Anthony (“Power”), Martin Sensmeier (“Westworld”) and Oscar-nominee Barbara Hershey (“The Portrait of a Lady”). Foresight Unlimited, Screen Media’s international sales division, is handling foreign sales for the picture and has successfully closed deals in many key international territories.

Amazon Studios has hopped on board with Macro Television Studios to partner with Ava DuVernay’s Array Filmworks to develop a TV adaptation of Octavia E. Butler’s 1987 sci-fi novel Dawn. Victoria Mahoney has been set as creator and will adapt and direct the pilot.
The project has been marinating for a while as Deadline exclusively reported that Macro, Array and Mahoney were developing the project in 2017. With Amazon on board, it seems that the project is gaining traction with development. The book, which was optioned by Macro, won a Hugo Award and tells the story of a black woman who works with aliens to resurrect the human race 250 years after a nuclear war.
The sci-fi genre is a good fit for Mahoney as she made history as the first woman (and woman of color for that matter) to direct a Star Wars film.

Victoria Mahoney, who last year became the first woman to direct part of a “Star Wars” film, is developing a new sci-fi project at Amazon.
Mahoney is teaming up with Ava DuVernay, her Array banner and Macro Television Studios to adapt Octavia E. Butler’s 1987 science-fiction novel “Dawn” for the small screen. Mahoney, who is set to helm an episode of the upcoming HBO Jordan Peele series “Lovecraft Country,” is slated to direct the pilot as well as writing the series.

The CW will close the book on “Jane the Virgin” this spring. But fans may get to dive into another chapter of Jane Villanueva’s world — or at least the one in her mind — if the spinoff pilot, “Jane the Novela,” gets picked up to series.
But does the possibility of a followup series mean other members of the “Jane” universe will be following creator Jennie Snyder Urman and star Gina Rodriguez (who will reprise her role as Jane as the narrator of the spinoff) over to the project?
“Probably not in the first year,” Urman told reporters while discussing the final season of “Jane” alongside Rodriguez, during the Television Critics Association’s press tour Thursday. “It’s imagined as an anthology, ’cause telenovelas are close-ended and it feels really exciting to be able to tell this kind of emotional, dramatic, scary, funny story all in one season.”

It’s official. The CW’s comedies Jane the Virgin and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend will end after their upcoming fifth and fourth seasons, respectively. Additionally, the network revealed this season that the upcoming fifth season of comedic drama iZombie also will be its last, making for string of farewells on the CW next season. It will start with Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, which is on the fall schedule, and continue in midseason with Jane the Virgin and iZombie.
The announcement is not a surprise. Ahead of Jane the Virgin‘s fifth season renewal, star Gina Rodriguez had referred to a then-potential Season 5 as “our final season,” while Crazy Ex-Girlfriend star/co-creator Rachel Bloom tweeted after its pickup, “Just found out that #CrazyExGirlfriend has been renewed for a final season.”

Today’s been a big news day for TV fans, as various networks have announced their renewals and cancellations for the 2014-2015 season. The CW is the latest to chime in, offering a few predictable pick-ups while getting rid of a couple freshman dramas to make way for new shows.
The Flash has been considered a lock for the upcoming season ever since the show was first announced, but the news has finally been made official. The show, a spinoff of the very popular and already-renewed Arrow, will be produced by Greg Berlanti, Andrew Kreisberg, and Geoff Johns. It will star Grant Gustin as the titular scarlet speedster, who made his television debut earlier this season on Arrow to rave reviews from fans and critics.
The Flash won’t be the only new DC property to find a home at The CW, as Rob Thomas’ iZombie adaptation has also been picked up.

The 1968 book deals with alcoholism, shock therapy and sports fandom and chronicles a man’s life lived in abject failure while seeking fame and driving himself and all those around him down a path of destruction. “It’s a brilliantly written parable, a diary for our time about self-destruction in pursuit of personal celebrity and ultimate fame, the kind that lasts beyond one’s lifetime,” said Pearl, who is producing with Jeffrey Shane and David Burton Morris. It took Pearl several years to track down and secure the rights to the book, and the he spent time trying to make it into a feature film before deciding that a series adaptation would work better, something to which Exley’s twin sister Francis Brown agreed. NBC has given the green light to 10.5, a four-hour miniseries about a deadly earthquake hitting the West Coast. The plot of the mini, from Jaffe/Braunstein Films and Pearl Pictures, centers on a gifted female seismologist at the University of Washington. When an earthquake in the Northwest triggers a series of shakes of increasing magnitude, she warns that the quakes are interrelated, a likely precursor to a big one, but her theory is met with skepticism. She is proven right as the tremors get worse and massive evacuations as well as a plan to use nuclear warheads are put into action. John Lafia (Man's Best Friend), Ronnie Christensen and Walker, Texas Ranger creator Christopher Canaan penned the script for the mini, which Lafia will direct. Gary Pearl (Liberty Stands Still) is executive producing the project, with Michael Jaffe and Howard Braunstein (NBC's Martha, Inc.: The Story of Martha Stewart) co-executive producing. Filming is scheduled to begin in June in Vancouver.
