Right-wingers like Mike Huckabee think same-sex marriage is the end of civilization. Actually, it’s only the beginning of some very tedious playwriting. Peter Parnell’s “Dada Woof Papa Hot” opened earlier this month at the Lincoln Center Theater in New York, followed by Mark Gerrard’s new comedy about married gay men, “Steve,” a New Group presentation that opened Wednesday at the Pershing Square Signature Center. If aliens visited Gotham and saw these two plays back-to-back, they’d think homosexuals are called dreary, not gay. When a play trains its basilisk gaze on a demographic you belong to, it may seem as if the playwright took notes inside your head. That’s how I felt, anyway, at Dada Woof Papa Hot, Peter Parnell’s seriously intelligent and deadly accurate dramedy about middle-aged, gay white male New York parents like myself. As it happens, that demographic is still small enough that Parnell (and several other gay dads involved in this sleek Lincoln Center Theater production) are social acquaintances of mine; we have seen (or heard of) each other doing some of the things the characters wind up doing onstage. For the sake of my marriage, I won’t say which ones. It’s enough to point out that many men — at least among those who lead relatively comfortable lives like ours — really are involved in the drama Parnell devises for them. Even as they embrace the...

If you’re single without children and not young, and feel that your life is a major mistake, it’s recommended that you see Peter Parnell’s new play, “Dada Woof Papa Hot,” which opened Monday at Lct’s Off Broadway Mitzi E. Newhouse Theater. You will cherish your decision to be alone and childless. Not only do the characters in Parnell’s play tell us what hard work it is to be in a committed relationship, they fully succeed in making it look like total drudgery. And we haven’t even gotten to their kids! The three couples in...

Last week BroadwayWorld reported that Disney Theatrical Productions has been experimenting with bringing a live stage version of The Muppets to Broadway, but according to the New York Times, that's not the only project in the works. Many other shows based on animated Disney classics are being created for the stage including The Hunchback Of Notre Dame music by Alan Menken, lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, book by Peter Parnell and direction by Scott Schwartz, for which a table reading was recently held. It was announced several year ago that stage adaptations of Dumbo direction by Stephen Daldry, and Tim Burton's version of Alice In Wonderland direction by Rob Ashford were in the works, though no new information has been released recently on either project.

Every night, we take turns and get cozy in our super-chic rocker and read at least two (but sometimes as many as five) books to Simone before she goes to bed. So we've read a lot of books in her nearly two years of life. There are some great books for kids, and a surprising number of really awful ones.
There's no telling why Simone gravitates toward certain books over others. We have maybe 50 or 60 for her to pick from, but she seems to always gravitate toward a handful of favorites. As dads, our criteria are pretty basic:
We like books with a point. That doesn't mean the book needs to have a distinct narrative with a beginning, middle, and end. It can be a basic book that showcases different colors. But it needs to be consistent and fun. We've read books that are literally four pages long and make no sense,...

It's a testament to Harry Connick, Jr.'s charm and talent that he manages to still be standing at the end of the re-imagined "On A Clear Day You Can See Forever."
The sets and lighting alone are so aggressively overwhelming that the audience must concentrate hard to hear the well-known numbers, including "What Did I Have That I Don't Have?" and the title song. To call this a revival is unfair; it's more of a reinvention.
Peter Parnell wrote the new book, based on Alan Jay Lerner's original book from the 1965 play. The music by Burton Lane and Lerner is the same, and songs were taken from their movies to supplement this.
Michael Mayer, whose Playbill credit has him as "re-conceiver," has done cutting-edge, excellent work in "American Idiot" and "Spring Awakening." This is neither.
It is, however, brave, and art should take chances, but there is more...

New York – Respect to director Michael Mayer and playwright Peter Parnell for their audacious attempt at reinventing a problematic musical in the Broadway revival of On a Clear Day You Can See Forever. The 1965 show has always been much loved for its lush Burton Lane score but denied the stamp of greatness by Alan Jay Lerner’s over-complicated structural mess of a book. Switching the gender of one point of the story’s romantic triangle, the new team has turned it into On a Queer Day. It’s an interesting twist but one that does little to alleviate the high-

Grammy and Emmy Award winner, Tony Award nominee and multi-platinum recording artist Harry Connick, Jr. will star as Dr. Mark Bruckner in the newly imagined production of On A Clear Day You Can See Forever opening December 11, 2011 on Broadway at The St. James Theatre, 246 W. 44th Street. The American Library Association, each year, keeps a record from teachers and librarians from around the country recording the number of objections raised against certain books. For the fifth year in a row, now, And Tango Makes Three tops the list of most challenged books. For the unfamiliar, it's about the true story of two male Emperor Penguins hatching and parenting a baby chick at New York's Central Park Zoo.
Hateful, bigoted people, of course, dislike the book, as they should. Gay penguins are melting the ice caps with all that gay penguin sex. The nine other books on the most challenged list are below, along with the chief objections (note, however, that the chief objection against Twilight is not: It's a shitty, poorly written abstinence porn. Salinger fans, however, can rejoice! Catcher in the Rye has finally fallen out of the top ten, as has Alice Walker's Color Purple.

Honestly, I’d prefer Harry Connick Jr. return to Broadway as himself after seeing his limited-run show there last summer, but I’ll take what I can get: The New York Post reports that the crooner, who starred in the 2006 revival of The Pajama Game, will likely star as the psychiatrist in the update of the 1965 Alan Jay Lerner-Burton Lane musical On a Clear Day You Can See Forever this fall. (A rep for Connick tells EW, “We’ve had some discussions but there’s nothing to announce at this time.”) In the original production, the patient was...
