It's a good thing that "Sicario" is often cited as the best Denis Villeneuve movies, seeing as the director, cast, and crew apparently risked their lives to make it. Imagine putting yourself through life-threatening situations just to witness the poor reviews roll in and the almighty Tomatometer bestow an abject splat upon your film. Thankfully, "Sicario" currently stands at a muscular 92% on Rotten Tomatoes, making it the third highest-rated of Villeneuve's films on the website, behind "Arrival" and "Dune: Part Two."
But without "Sicario," those other two blockbusters arguably wouldn't exist. This was the movie that established Villeneuve as a director capable of balancing human drama with large-scale action and set him on a course to shepherd the big-budget movies he's now known for. As "Dune: Part Two" crosses box office milestone after box office milestone, "Sicario" still stands as the movie that made it all possible.

Lionsgate had a whole lot of interesting projects to promote at CinemaCon today. Alexandre Aja’s Never Let Go, The Crow remake, the Margot Robbie-produced Monopoly, Guy Ritchie’s In the Grey and The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, Highlander, Borderlands, a Blumhouse reimagining of The Blair Witch Project, the John Wick spin-off Ballerina, the Michael Jackson biopic Michael, they all got a moment in the spotlight in one way or another. And that’s far from the complete list. Attendees also got to see trailers and previews of multiple other films, and we’ve got a bit of a round-up compiled below.

Terry Crews is a serial entertainer. The energetic actor has a muscular physique that action icons Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger were impressed with when they worked with him on The Expendables franchise. However, despite the hulking image, Crews would not limit himself to action movies as he would use his charismatic charm for such sitcoms like Everybody Hates Chris and Are We There Yet?, as well as being the host for the reality competition, America’s Got Talent. Crews is now ready to throw some fists and let the bullets fly yet again. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Crews will be seen in an upcoming action-comedy that will co-star the equally charismatic muscleman, Dave Bautista. Crews and Bautista have recently wrapped filming on The Killer’s Game.
The film’s synopsis, as reported by THR, says, “Based on Jay Bonansinga’s novel, The Killer’s Game follows a veteran assassin (Bautista), who,...

Battered by disappointing markets at Toronto and AFM, both of which were held under the shadow of the actors strike, buyers and sellers are looking to Berlin’s European Film Market (EFM), which runs Feb. 15-21, to re-energize the indie business. The outlook, coming out of Sundance, is good.
“The difference in Sundance from last year to this was extreme, there were a lot more deals being down, both by distributors and streamers,” says Janina Vislmaier, head of sales at Protagonist Pictures, which screened The Outrun with Saoirse Ronan and Sasquatch Sunset with Riley Keough and Jesse Eisenberg in Park City, both of which will screen at the EFM. “Everyone is really excited ahead of Berlin, especially because all the buyers are back, including from Asia, which is a really good sign.”

We all know what separates the "John Wick" franchise from many other action franchises we have to endure in our modern cinematic landscape. Not only is the fight choreography intricate and inventive, but the action is shot and edited so clearly that we can fully appreciate and be in awe of the choreography. Basically all we have now fulfilling this core principle of action filmmaking is "Mission: Impossible" and "John Wick," with the former satisfying our desire for grand spectacle and the latter our desire for balletic fights. Keanu Reeves and all of the stunt people involved in putting together these sequences deserve so much praise for injecting life into a genre that desperately needed it.
Precision is everything in the world of "John Wick," and while that is most evident in the fight choreography, that same precision needs to trickle down into every single part of the titular character's being.

It's been a rough couple of years at the movies, but if 2022 proved anything, it's that capital-c Cinema still stands a chance. The blockbuster came back in a major way this year — and not just for the tried-and-true Marvel Cinematic Universe. 2022 was, for better or worse, the year of the spectacle: big budgets, big effects and even bigger risk. It made for a surprisingly great year for action, especially the films that pushed the limits of the genre or even evoked some good old-fashioned nostalgia.
It's not an easy thing, picking favorites — but with the end of the year upon us, now's as good a time as any to reflect on the greatest additions to the genre in 2022. Whether these 15 films broke big or cruised under the radar, whether they relied on technical achievements or dipped into low humor now and again, they still managed to raise our pulses in their own special way.

All is not well in Granite City. The economy is in the toilet, crime rules the streets, superheroes are dead and, worst of all, annoying fans won’t stop bugging Sylvester Stallone about his early work.
“Samaritan” stars Stallone in his first lead superhero role since 1995’s embarrassing “Judge Dredd,” but he’s played the type many times before. Films like “Cobra” and the “Rambo” sequels have long presented the muscular star as a larger-than-life figure, standing tall against evil and kicking its ass for a third of a century. He may not have a long history of actually wearing tights but the role still fits.
Stallone plays Joe, a world-weary garbage man who keeps to himself and repairs old junk as a hobby. Javon Walton (“Euphoria”) co-stars as Sam, a young teen who is obsessed with Granite City’s superhero, Samaritan, and supervillain, Nemesis, who reportedly perished fighting each other decades ago.

In the Netflix film "Day Shift," Jamie Foxx plays Bud, a pool cleaner by day, vampire hunter by night, selling fangs at a pawn shop to make extra cash. As it turns out though, fangs aren't worth very much. This prompts Bud to rejoin the vampire hunters union, overseen by a cowardly supervisor named Seth, played by Dave Franco.
Franco, of course, is known for his comedy work in films going all the way back to "Superbad," which is celebrating its 15th anniversary this year. He's acted in comedies from "21 Jump Street," to "Fright Night," to the heartwarming zombie comedy "Warm Bodies." He even appeared in the ninth season of the TV comedy "Scrubs." Director J.J. There’s a moment in “Day Shift,” a new vampire action movie on Netflix, that might be easy to miss, but for those paying attention, speaks directly to a moment happening in cinematography right now that’s changing how films are made.
It happens during a high-speed car chase in which Jamie Foxx’s beleaguered San Fernando Valley vampire slayer is trying to elude various baddies. It’s a zippy sequence for sure, but what really set me off (I rewound and watched it again) is when the camera is launched from inside one of the cars, traveling through the sunroof and, still in motion, continuing to capture the action. It’s a small flourish but a truly incredible one that embodies not just how Hollywood is changing the way modern action movies look, but also how they feel.
“In this business, everything’s been done already,” Perry told TheWrap.

Chad Stahelski is paying it forward.
When he’s not conducting well-choreographed chaos for Keanu Reeves’ John Wick, Stahelski strives to lift up the stunt community that launched his career as a stunt performer, as well as his second act as a director. With the success of the John Wick franchise, Stahelski and his company, 87eleven Entertainment, now have the cachet to create opportunities for other stunt professionals with filmmaking aspirations, just like Reeves did for him and his former partner, David Leitch.
So when Stahelski’s friend and John Wick: Chapter 2 supervising stunt coordinator J.J. Last Friday, Netflix released a fun vampire slayer action flick called Day Shift (you can read our 7/10 review Here)… and if you watched the movie, you may have noticed that it had a goofy end credits song called “Mowing Down Vamps”, which built a tune around a line spoken by the character played by Dave Franco (The Disaster Artist). The song around Franco’s line was performed by The Bsb Boys (J Young Mdk and Sam Pounds) alongside the film’s star Jamie Foxx (Spider-Man: No Way Home) – and now Foxx has released a video for the song.
The music video, directed by Taylor Chien, features Foxx, Franco, some vampire fights, and a good dose of silliness. You can check it out at the bottom of this article.

Photo: ‘Day Shift’ Introduction On the surface, Bud Jablonski is a simple pool cleaner who wants nothing more than to provide for his only daughter. However, pool cleaning is simply a front, and Bud is actually a vampire hunter in the Valley who makes his money by pawning off vampire body parts. He is skilled, but struggles to make money since he is not a member of the Vampire Hunting Union. After applying to re-enter the union, Bud is forced to work with Union member Seth on his vampire hunting adventures. ‘Day Shift’ is directed by J J. Perry and stars Jamie Foxx as Bud, the vampire hunter; Dave Franco plays Seth, a desk worker for the Vampire Hunter Union who is forced to team up with Bud; Karla Souza plays Audrey San Fernando, an elder vampire disguised as a real-estate agent; Snoop Dogg plays Big John Elliot, a senior...

Now streaming on Netflix, Day Shift turns Jamie Foxx into a vampire-slayer, and the movie has now received an official music video for the original song that plays over the end credits.
Jamie Foxx and co-star Dave Franco are featured in director Taylor Chien‘s video for “Bud (Mowing Down Vamps),” which also features J Young Mdk and Sam Pounds.

Jamie Foxx and Dave Franco are “cuttin’ necks and cashin’ checks” in Netflix‘s vampire movie Day Shift, which sank its teeth into the streaming service on August 12th.
“Foxx stars as a hard working blue collar dad who wants to provide a good life for his quick-witted daughter, but his mundane San Fernando Valley pool cleaning job is a front for his real source of income, hunting and killing vampires as part of an international union of hunters.

Jamie Foxx gets into the vampire-slaying mood with the help of Dave Franco in the wild new video for his equally wild song, “Bud (Mowing Down Vamps).” The track is tied to Foxx’s new Netflix movie Day Shift, in which the actor plays a seemingly mild-mannered pool cleaner named Bud Jablonski, whose actual job is hunting vampires.

The action-packed vampire fight scenes in Netflix's "Day Shift" are easily the highlight of the just-released sci-fi comedy. And while the Jamie Foxx-led film - which also stars Dave Franco, Snoop Dogg, and Meagan Good - tapped professional contortionists and other performers to capture its intense, supernatural magic, one of the movie's other leads was adamant about doing her own stunts.
Karla Souza, who plays vampire boss/San Fernando Valley real estate agent Audrey in the film, tells Popsugar she insisted to director J.J. Perry that she act out her stunt sequences without any extra assistance. "I spoke to J.J. before agreeing to do the project, and he loved that I used to be an athlete. I could do all the action stuff . . . I was like, 'I want to do every single stunt. I don't want any doubles,'" Souza shares. "He was like, 'Sure, sure,'...

Netflix’s latest dip into horror-adjacent entertainment, Day Shift, is the directorial debut of veteran stunt coordinator J.J. Perry, best known for his work on John Wick: Chapter 2 and F9: The Fast Saga, and it speeds to the same stylish finish as those high octane films. How could it not? The film is produced by Chad Stahelski, who has directed or co-directed every entry in the John Wick franchise, and never met a subtly suspenseful mystery he couldn’t turn into a full-throttle action-adventure extravaganza. Jamie Foxx, a diverse and accomplished performer in all conceivable formats of entertainment, plays Bud Jablonski, a working man’s vampire hunter. Sadly, Bud’s film is in such a rush to find targets for him that it misses the vampires altogether.

“Day Shift” has dawned.
The new Netflix film, which liberally mixes action, horror and comedy, stars Jamie Foxx as a San Fernando Valley pool cleaner who doubles as an infamous vampire hunter. When his estranged wife (Meagan Good) threatens to leave town with their young daughter, he springs into action, working to rejoin the vampire hunters’ union. Along the way – wouldn’t you know it? – he stumbles across a vast vampire conspiracy involving housing developments and an ancient mystical temple. You know, that old story.
TheWrap spoke to “Day Shift” director J.J. Perry about how he moved from second unit direction and stunt choreography to directing features (“Day Shift” was produced by the same team behind “John Wick”), what makes the San Fernando Valley so special and what we can expect from further installments in the “Day Shift” saga.

If you’ve been following big budget action films over the past ten years, you’ve probably seen J.J. Perry’s handiwork. Known for his stunt work on films like the John Wick series and the Fast and Furious franchise, the stunt coordinator turned second-unit director is now making his directorial debut with the Netflix action-comedy Day Shift.
Set in Los Angeles’ San Fernando Valley, the film stars Jamie Foxx as a hardworking dad in need of some quick cash to provide for his daughter. His job? Hunting and killing vampires.
“Getting this movie was a big win, but getting Jamie Foxx was like winning the biggest lottery in the history of lotteries,” Perry tells The Hollywood Reporter of scoring Foxx for the lead role. “For me, it changed everything. I thought somebody was putting him up to it when he called me.

While “John Wick: Chapter 4” is reportedly the longest “John Wick” film yet, director Chad Stahelski ensures that the newest installment will use that extra runtime wisely.
“I love mythology,” Stahelski told Variety at the red carpet for “Day Shift” on Wednesday night. “I love a good myth. I don’t really believe — at least for the ‘John Wick’ movies — in a three-act structure. I believe in storytelling and leaving it. You know, we’ve always seen John Wick as Odysseus. So we take the time we need to tell the story. As long as we don’t fall asleep watching it, we keep it going. But I guess there is a bathroom limit.”

J.J. Perry started his career in Hollywood by getting hit by cars. Now, he’s taking on his first project for the big screen. In “Day Shift,” Perry used his extensive knowledge of stunts and action scenes to create vampire-slaying sequences with garlic grenades, katanas and silver bullets.
“I prepped this movie so hard,” Perry told Variety Wednesday evening at the red carpet premiere for the film in Los Angeles. “I think we ended up with, like, 65 setups. [The first day on set] was the opening fight in the grandma’s house. We shot that in three days. It would usually take people about five or six days. We were ready. We knew what we were doing. A bunch of action guys doing action stuff.”

A down-at-heel hero fires wooden bullets at boring bloodthirsty villains in this unexciting and unfunny action comedy
Veteran stunt coordinator JJ Perry makes a clunky directing debut with this appropriately undead two-hour slice of action-comedy content for Netflix about a “vampire hunter” played by Jamie Foxx; the crude and tiring shotgun-blasts to the creatures’ faces and torsos are taken from every single boring zombie film you’ve ever seen.
LA is suffering from an infestation of vampires, kept quiet by the authorities, so there is a secret army of vampire hunters whacking these fanged critters on the sly and picking up bounty fees for presenting their trophy fangs to various licensed and unlicensed dealers. Bud (Foxx) rides around town in his scuzzy old pickup, posing as a pool cleaner. In fact, he has an array of pump-action shotguns, psychotic hunting knives, rolls of decapitation wire and special bullets with toughened...

Jamie Foxx has been a very busy man. Ever since he signed a development deal with Sony Pictures, which now has a licensing agreement for features with Netflix, he has worked on everything from a family-oriented comedy series to genre action flicks on the streaming platform.
The partnership continues with “Day Shift,” a vampire-hunting action comedy movie set in Los Angeles, co-starring Dave Franco, Karla Souza and Megan Good, with special appearances by Peter Stormare and Snoop Dogg.
It’s also the directorial debut of stunt coordinator and second-unit director J.J. Perry, and subsequently, the action scenes here are definitely impressive. And that’s great, because you will not be watching this movie for the script. “Day Shift” is what you get if you put “Supernatural” and “Training Day” in a juicer, extract the plots, and leave only epic fight sequences and lots of teeth.

The vampire genre has survived innumerable indignities over the decades — Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter or Dracula 2000, anyone? — so it will surely emerge largely intact after the abuse is must now endure courtesy of Day Shift. The premise isn’t half-bad, with a leading-man vampire attempting to go straight for the sake of his wife and young daughter, and the presence of Jamie Foxx and Snoop Dogg in leading roles provides some allure, amusement and cache. But the script never remotely rises to the occasion, resulting in a hodge-podgy mess that, at nearly two hours, is also a half-hour too long for its own, or anyone else’s, good.
The setting — the dregs of the San Fernando Valley — scarcely seems less like prime vampire real estate compared to Transylvania, but that’s where a reformed vampire with the unlikely name of Bud Jablonski (Foxx) ekes out a living cleaning swimming pools.

“Day Shift” is a vampire thriller stuffed with lock-and-load ultraviolence, starring Jamie Foxx in imperious badass mode. At heart, though, it’s a knowingly eccentric goof of a movie, to the point that it’s hard, for a while, not to find it agreeable, even as you register what a preposterous piece of fluff it is. Unfortunately, it’s also an arduous piece of fluff. , especially when the rules are applied as inconsistently as they are here. Directed by J.J. Perry, “Day Shift” wants to be a dessert drenched in blood. That gives it flavor but also weighs it down.
Foxx plays Bud Jablonski, a Los Angeles vampire hunter whose day job is driving around in an ancient pick-up truck to clean and service swimming pools in the San Fernando Valley. Bud’s one and only goal is to get his hands on 10,000, which he needs to pay for the...

Netflix’s latest, Day Shift, marks longtime stunt coordinator J.J. Perry’s feature directorial debut and is produced by John Wick franchise director Chad Stahelski. As if that action caliber wasn’t enough, Day Shift employs contortionists and performers from Cirque du Soleil to portray its bendy, acrobatic vampires. That results in a horror comedy that’s heavy on style and action spectacle… but slight on substance and laughs.
Jamie Foxx stars as San Fernando Valley pool cleaner Bud Jablonski. The pool cleaning gig merely fronts for Bud’s career choice: a freelance vampire slayer selling vamp fangs for profit. When estranged wife Jocelyn (Meagan Good) announces plans to move their daughter Paige (Zion Broadnax) to Florida, Bud turns to pal Big John Elliott (Snoop Dogg) to get him back in the Union’s good graces to earn enough quick cash to keep his family close. Saddled with stuffy Union...

Plot: Bud Jablonski (Jamie Foxx) masquerades as a pool cleaner, but in reality, he’s a vampire hunter struggling to make ends meet in a competitive job market. Thrown out of the vampire killing union due to his attitude, he’s given one last shot to rejoin them but must impress a nerdy union rep (Dave Franco) with no vamp hunting experience. Meanwhile, an ancient vampire (Karla Souza) plots to turn the San Fernando Valley into a Mecca for the undead but harbours a deadly grudge against Jablonski and wants him and his family dead.
Review: Day Shift is a lot less ambitious than some of Netflix’s other, bigger-budget would-be franchise starters. Here’s the thing – if they’ve put out anything this year that legitimately feels like it has the chance to be a franchise, this is it. While nothing you haven’t seen before, this is a modestly scaled vampire hunting action-comedy,...
