We're into our third week of Britain's Got Talent auditions, and as always there were all sorts of acts on show. Well, when Ant & Dec weren't zip-lining or downing Guinness or dancing in the streets, that is. And when Simon Cowell wasn't off welcoming baby Eric into the world (all together now: aww.) As always, though, while the acts were varied in genre, they were also massively varied in, well, talent level. Read on to find out what we saw on this week's episode of Britain's Got Talent, from the good to the bad to the bizarre...

The 12th edition of the East End Film Festival kicked off in London last night with the world premiere of Mark Donne’s documentary, The UK Gold.
The film probes the complex and disturbing world of offshore tax avoidance and its screening was followed by a series of music performances and DJ sets.
The festival runs June 25 to July 10, with screenings and events staged at a variety of venues throughout the East End.
It will close with a screening of Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman’s Sundance hit, Lovelace.
The opening night, staged at the Troxy - formerly a grand cinema designed to seat an audience of 3,520 but more recently renovated as an events venue – was introduced by the Eeff’s executive director Alison Poltock.
The laid-back screening saw the audience sit at round tables with food and drink while the film played, in a bid to make the festival accessible and and inviting to younger cinemagoers...

Even as the Edinburgh International Film Festival presses ahead up north, the nation’s capital is not – and never has been – content to sit complacent on the cinematic front. The East End Film Festival, founded in 2000 and expanding year on year ever since, returns from 25 June to July 10 and once again boasts a remarkably strong lineup. Awards to dish out include Best Film, Best Documentary, Best Short Film and the Eeff Short Film Audience Award, from an eclectic jury that features the likes of the Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw, Wu-Tang Clan head honcho RZA, and Armando Bo, winner of last year’s Best Film Award for his directorial debut El Ultimo Elvis.

John Power has said that music and music journalism has become too "middle class". The Cast frontman told Absolute Radio's Vicki Blight before a show at the Hard Rock Cafe that the industry had "sold its soul" in recent years. "I think it's missing a bit of bite, and whether that will come back because of the economic time, what's going on, people are feeling the pinch," Power said. "Just seems like there's too many comfortable people in comfortable positions doing music, it's a bit too comfortable. "I've been in two very great bands, The La's and Cast, and I've been around for 20-odd years musically, but I certainly think the journalism, the journalists, the music, it just seems a bit... it's top-heavy, middle-class." He added: "This isn't (more)...

Cast have announced plans to release their first album in over ten years. The Britpop band will release Troubled Times, the follow-up to 2001's Beetroot on February 20, 2012. The album will mark their 20th anniversary, and will be followed by a UK tour. They will also release the single 'See That Girl' on December 19. Troubled Times was recorded by the band's original lineup of John Power, Liam 'Skin' Tyson, Pete Wilkinson and Keith O'Neill and producer John Leckie. John Power said: "Getting back with the band and working with John Leckie again after all these years apart was just how I envisioned it when I started writing the songs for this album. "Then it was all about putting into words what it was I was feeling, about all the things (more)...

Cast have finished recording their comeback album. The Britpop band, fronted by former La's bassist John Power, formed in 1992 and released four albums before splitting in 2001. The La's frontman Lee Mavers made his return to live music last night with a surprise gig in Manchester. Mavers was accompanied by Gary Murphy, formerly of The Bandits, on bass at the show at The Deaf Institute in support of Hyde & Beast, NME reports. The band had been billed as Lee Rude & The Velcro Underpants, leading to much fan speculation that Mavers would perform. Mavers reunited with John Power to reform The La's in 2005. He has since played sporadic live shows, most recently appearing at a Pete Doherty gig in 2009. Around that time, it was claimed that Mavers would again revive The La's with a new lineup for a full (more)...

It's not been a vintage year for fanboy fare, writes Ben Child, but he's managed to find a top five worth shouting about. Post your own shortlist below
Once again we find ourselves in the season of lists, and just as was the case last year, I find myself incapable of finding 10 films that I can recommend as the year's best. Does this say something about the dearth of quality fanboy fare? Quite possibly. We may have emerged from the bad old years of Joel Schumacher Batman movies and Ben Affleck in a pimp suit, but there are still more poor and distinctly average films out there than there are great ones.
This year saw the arrival of Predators, much-hyped but ultimately a tired retread with few new ideas to revive the franchise, not to mention a pointless Laurence Fishburne pseudo-cameo. We also had the fetid Jonah Hex, in which...

Cast have announced plans to reform to celebrate the 15th year since the release of their debut album All Change. The full lineup of John Power, Liam 'Skin' Tyson, Peter Wilkinson and Keith O'Neill will play a number of yet-to-be announced tour dates to mark the anniversary. Frontman Power told NME: "I know it's been nearly a decade but everything feels alright. I'm in a good place at the minute so I rang the lads each individually and told them I feel like going out again with the band. "For me to have rang the lads and for the lads to have come and sat in the same room as me is unbelievable (more)...

The Fuck Buttons’ lore is almost too perfect. Andrew Hung grew up a fan of Aphex Twin’s dense experimental electronica. Benjamin John Power was inspired by Scottish post-rock juggernaut Mogwai. The two met in a Bristol art school, and recording commenced. But sometimes “too perfect” is just a cockeyed way of saying “meant to be”—because as contrived as the story sounds (at least when whittled down for the sake of journalistic fluidity), Fuck Buttons has proven that its ventures into larger-than-life collisions are hugely successful and seemingly organic. If the duo’s 2008 debut, Street Horrrsing, represents the ...

Lee Mavers is planning to revive The La's with a new lineup to record the group's second album, 19 years after the release of their first. Babyshambles bassist Drew McConnell told BBC 6 Music that he has joined the band in place of former member John Power, while the pair are said to be auditioning drummers and guitarists. The new roster will play their first gig at Sheffield's Tramlines festival in July before embarking on a full UK tour. McConnell, who played with Mavers at recent Pete Doherty shows, said: "At the end of that tour we're going to go in and record the second record, which is all written already. "We just need to find (more)...
