Since the wedding of Prince Edward to Sophie Duchess of Edinburgh, it was agreed by the Queen that her youngest son and daughter-in-law should be created the Earl and Countess of Wessex, instead of being created a Royal Duke and Duchess, as his two older brothers and their wives are. Informally, it was agreed that upon the death of Prince Philip, and the ascension of Prince Charles as King, that the title of Duke of Edinburgh, having merged back into the crown, would instead pass to Edward, who would become Prince Edward, Duke of Edinburgh. However, Charles has stated that he wishes to "slim down" or "re-make" the monarchy, with fewer senior working royals, when he becomes King, the effect of which would mean that Edward would likely not inherit his father's title, as had previously been agreed by The Queen.
