Line-up includes new features by Dario Argento, Jacob Tierney and Fantasia alumni Rob Grant and Kerry Prior.
Montreal’s Fantasia International Film Festival has announced the Off-Frontières selection for this year’s Frontières International Co-Production Market.
The line-up of 12 projects features projects from Canada, Mexico and the UK, among others, and includes the next features from Dario Argento and Jacob Tierney as well as follow-up features from Fantasia alumni Rob Grant, Pat Kiely, Kerry Prior and Olivier Sabino.
Stephanie Trepanier, Frontières creative director, told Screen: “The Off-Frontières line-up of project always allows us to include more projects we believe in, but couldn’t fit in the official 12-projects selection because of quota limitations or because the project is more advanced than the scope we set for the official Frontières line-up.

I hear a lot of casual horror fans talking about the lack of quality horror films in recent years... and to some extent they have a point. Studio-funded horror films seem to be less prevalent than they were three decades ago, and many mass-marketed horror films are lighter on gore, nudity, and the like than the features of yesteryear (with the obvious exception of the Evil Dead reboot). But there are still plenty of quality horror films being made – it’s just incumbent upon horror fans to look a little harder. There are a plethora of well-made horror pictures being released every year; they just aren’t all getting the mainstream attention that they deserve. In an attempt to remedy that, and shine the spotlight on some outstanding films that haven’t received a great deal of publicity, we are showcasing five titles from the past five years that may have passed you by,...

The Revenant
Stars: David Anders, Chris Wylde, Louise Griffiths, Jacy King | Written and Directed by Kerry Prior
Revenant – One who returns from the dead in corporeal form.
Dying sucks. I mean, think about it. You cease to exist, and all the beautiful things in life can never be seen again. You become worm food, a permanent resident taking up real estate six feet under. But what if, and those are some powerful words, what if you didn’t have to stay dead? What if you could come back and be immortal, for lack of a better word? It’s not something to be taken lightly and in the wrong hands, it can go bad for everyone involved. How would you use that power? And therein lies the central idea of The Revenant.
We follow the story of Bart Gregory, a soldier “killed to death in a gunfight,” while on patrol in Iraq.

Most often explored as a source of terror for the living, the reality of undead amongst us takes on a whole new spin when seen as a benefit to be controlled instead of an affliction that drives the returned masses to unwavering bloodlust. D. Kerry Prior's The Revenant takes just this approach while at the same time injecting a healthy dose of comedy and a little bit of social introspection. What role would undying men and women, who must drink the blood of the living, serve in modern society? Where would they feed? A punchy script and a solid comedic pairing of David Anders and Chris Wylde keep The Revenant's plot moving for the first two acts, but after that a sense of despair sets in and the film runs off the rails while trying to find somewhere meaningful to go with its message. It doesn’t quite succeed,...

D. Kerry Prior's The Revenant, a movie this writer first fell in love with during ScreamFest 2009 and celebrated during Dread Central's 2010 Indie Horror Month, recently kicked off its limited theatrical release and is still playing in selected theaters this weekend as well.
Since we missed chatting with the film's star, David Anders ("Heroes," "The Vampire Diaries"), back in 2010, we jumped at the chance to do so now. Anders discussed his thoughts on what makes Prior's film so appealing, the difficulties of working with "semen vision" and collaborating with his real-life bud, the always hysterical Chris Wylde, for this project.
DC also snagged for our readers an exclusive clip from The Revenant that you can dig on right here. Check it out, and make sure to see The Revenant if it's playing on the big screen near you!

These lists do not include movies I have seen at film festivals but instead are based on what has been theatrically released here in Canada or at least on demand.

Beasts also marks one of the most promising American directorial debuts in recent times. Written, produced, directed and edited by D. Kerry Prior (visual effects artist on films such as Bubba Ho-Tep, Phantasm II – IV, The Lost Boys, The Abyss), The Revenant is a truly remarkable experience – a dark comedy that creeps up not to scare its audience so much as surprise us again and again. The Revenant
Starring: David Anders, Chris Wylde, Louise Griffiths, Jacy King Written, Directed and Produced by Kerry Prior
The Revenant has been kicking around for awhile (IMDb lists it at a 2009 film), running the festival circuit and refusing to die like its main character. In this new age where we’re flooded by zombies, vampires and werewolves (oh my!) in every pop culture outlet possible, it takes a unique and cunning vision to make one of so many stand out. After a three-year wait, festival favorite The Revenant finally hits theaters today in a limited release that includes Austin. Director D. Kerry Prior won the Best Director Award at Fantastic Fest in 2009 (my podcast interview). At the time Prior mentioned he still had the challenge of securing distribution for his feature as well as finalizing visual effects. After a successful festival run, Prior re-cut portions of The Revenant to tighten up this dark comedy. The final cut enhances the darkness of this genre-defying film while ensuring its placement in the hall of "must-see" movies of the undead nature.
The Revenant centers around Bart Gregory (David Anders), a soldier who is killed in Iraq during a nighttime ambush. Bart is laid to rest as his best friend Joey (Chris Wylde) and girlfriend Janet (Louise Griffiths) mourn his death ... only it turns out that Bart isn't done with living. He reunites with Joey,...

When fallen soldier Bart mysteriously rises from the grave, he and his slacker best friend become vigilante crime fighters with hilariously mixed results as their adventures become more complicated and bloody than expected in The Revenant.
Written and directed by D. Kerry Prior, the film stars David Anders (the CW.s .The Vampire Diaries.) and Chris Wylde (The Ten).
This breakout horror comedy centers around a fallen soldier who somehow finds he has joined the ranks of the living dead. The point of using horror films as allegory, political or otherwise, is twofold. There are the obvious benefits of allegorizing, which allow you to disguise your intentions using coded language, cinematic or otherwise. And then there’s the genre sledgehammer, which comes down with righteous anger, coating the topic in sticky gore, surrounding it with stacks of disembodied heads, and, for those who aren’t squeamish, illuminating the filmmaker’s point of view by rendering it actively unpleasant, and therefore impossible to ignore. In this fashion, few could have predicted that one of the most vital films about our post-9/11 occupation of the Middle East would be Kerry Prior’s inventive, disgusting, and unsettling “The Revenant.” David Anders is Bart, a soldier overseas who, in a moment of kindness and/or weakness, leaves his vehicle to be showered in bullets. You can’t keep a good man down, however, and within days after his funeral,...

Plot: After dying in combat, Bart returns from the grave, pretty much the way he used to be - except for the fact that he has an unquenchable thirst for blood and his flesh is rotting off. Teaming up with his slacker buddy, Bart must discover how best to move on with his, um, life. Review: Despite a successful year-long festival run from 2009 - 2010, Kerry Prior's The Revenant has obviously had a prolonged journey to a wide audience. At long last, the film is receiving a VOD/limited...

An undead vigilante? You bet your ass. The Revenant, meaning “one that returns to life after death or a long absence,” is an apt title for this horror/comedy from writer/director Kerry Prior. Having been shot in 2008 and shown at a few genre festivals shortly after, it seemingly died on the shelf, only to reemerge in limited release just this month. The timing is probably better for it now, what with zombies being in vogue again thanks to AMC’s The Walking Dead, and vampires desperately needing to shed the sparkly, mopey stigma they’ve received of late....

Director/writer: D. Kerry Prior. Cast: David Anders, Louise Griffiths, Jacy King, and Chris Wylde. Tagline: "The only thing worse than having your best friend die is having him come back." While watching D. Kerry Prior's The Revenant, this reviewer is reminded of another zombie buddy movie titled Deadheads. In both films, two friends have to deal with becoming undead. Deadheads is more of a road trip comedy, while The Revenant is a darker thriller. Both films tell tales of a friend trying to help another with elements of romance on the periphery. As more background, The Revenant was completed in 2009 and despite winning several awards, this title has experienced some delays in reaching the public. Lionsgate has picked up this title for an September release and fans of zombie thrillers and comedies will want to shamble out to their local Redbox to feed on this title at home.

Here's the thing about being undead: You can afford to wait around a little. Fans were no doubt expecting a release of Kerry Prior's excellent horror-comedy The Revenant back when it was winning awards on the festival circuit a couple years back, which didn't happen for a few reasons. But it's happening now, with a limited theatrical and VOD release coming next Friday, August 24th. And, weirdly, the film is arguably more topical now than it was when it was first winning raves. This breakout horror comedy centers around a fallen soldier who somehow finds he has joined the ranks of the living dead. Alright, I have to ask – Why do so many fantastic films get caught in studio limbo while utter garbage is seemingly churned out on a daily basis? Why did it take three long years of anticipation before I could get my hands on a copy of Kerry Prior’s The Revenant? In 2009 alone, Prior demolished the New York City Horror Film Festival by winning Best Director, having both David Anders and Chris Wylde tie for Best Actor, scoring the Audience Choice Award, and finished by capturing Best Feature honors. Yet a film like Area 407 got a full featured release first?!
Well, after a three-year wait I was finally given a chance to see what all the hoopla was about, and boy can I say the wait was worth it. Horror fans everywhere, heed my recommendation and add Prior’s film to your must see list immediately, you’ll thank yourself afterward.

When The Revenant played at Fantastic Fest in 2009, it was an excellent hour-and-a-half movie hiding inside a two-hour cut. It had potential, but it’s unclear what state the film is in now as it prepares to finally invade theaters. In the movie from director Kerry Prior, an Iraqi soldier (David Anders) comes back to life but needs to drink human blood to keep his soul from hurting all the time. He entrusts his best pal (Chris Wylde) with helping him get the red stuff, but soon his buddy wants to be a vampire too. Why? Because when you’re a vampire, you can also be a vigilante with little to no danger to your physical form. So, yes, the best description of this bad boy is that it’s an indie horror buddy dramedy vigilante movie. It’s the result of a quick spin in the genre blender, and now it has a trailer to entice...
