Roadmap Writers, a screenwriting education and training platform based in Los Angeles, is partnering with Hollywood producer Barry Josephson to identify short stories fit for film and television adaptation.
The competition, open now and running through June 14, seeks commercial-leaning work and carries a cash prize of $7,000. The top three stories will be published on Roadmap Writers.
Short stories have become coveted in the rights market, especially over the past year, and have led to bidding wars among the major studios and streamers. Author Victor Sweetser sold the innovative haunted house film “The Occupant” to New Line this year, and Matt Query got a 7-figure deal at Netflix for his Reddit short story “My Wife and I Bought a Ranch.”
For the Josephson competition, scouters are asking for work no longer than 50 pages and can be of any genre. In addition to the short story, authors are requested to submit a...

He could play it cool or white-hot, philosophically curious or passionate to a fault — a movie star with leading-man good lucks and a character actor’s way of digging into the idiosyncrasies of a role no matter what size it was. William Hurt, who died today at the age of 71, was one of those performers who could seem both brainy yet profoundly empathetic whether he was playing noble, saintly men or manipulative bastards; he famously had contempt for the film industry, but he never showed contempt for his audiences. Andy Lau is on the phone, alone in a crowded bar, shoulders to the camera, palms cupped on the handset. We’re halfway through Wong Kar-wai’s first film, As Tears Go By (1988), and his Wah, a small-time gangster, is trying to reach Ngor (Maggie Cheung), a cousin he once hosted in his flat but has long since lost touch with. There was undeniable attraction between the two, but neither was brave enough to act upon it: Ngor returned to Lantau island to help in the family's restaurant, and Wah resumed his duties in the underworld. She’s not around, a woman tells him on the other end; he hangs up, reaches for a cigarette. And this is when it happens. The bar goes quiet for a second or two, until a jukebox starts singing a Cantonese rendition of Berlin’s 1986 hit “Take My Breath Away”, which catapults Wah into a bus,...

Katy Keene Episode 7
“It’s the perfect showcase for my drag and Broadway careers.”
In my previous reviews of Katy Keene, I’ve lamented the show’s lack of clearly defined identity. At times it is a breezy New York City fairytale that is as edgy as a circle. Often it is a lightweight romantic comedy. And sometimes there’s musical numbers randomly thrown in. It’s a televisual hodgepodge to be sure, one that is the exact diversion that is needed Right Now. That said, it’s been a bit of a, um, drag that all of these factors of the series have never congealed properly.
This latest episode combined all of these issues into a cohesive whole, resulting in an hour of television that had moments of tangible grace among all of the music. Written by Archieverse maestro Roberto Aquirre-Sacasa, it presents...
