Movie soundtracks can elevate ordinary stories, adding depth and resonance to beloved films. The lasting impact of these soundtracks is evident in the instantly recognizable songs that continue to endure. Sometimes, the music becomes a movie’s highlight, compensating for weaker storylines or characters.
Classic movie musicals like West Side Story have stood the test of time, while films like The Bodyguard provided a platform for legendary artists to showcase their talents. The longevity of these soundtracks is often measured by their chart performance, reflecting their profound influence on generations.
The intertwining of music and cinema is a magical combination. The closing notes of The Breakfast Club, the era-defining mix of Dazed and Confused, and the genius of Prince in Purple Rain are just a few examples of the powerful synergy between sound and vision.

Shaquille O’Neal is returning to rap.
The NBA legend who released four hip-hop albums in the ‘90s will drop a new single called “King Talk” on May 2 in celebration of the NBA Playoffs. It is a collaboration with Ghanian-American rapper Blackway.
O’Neal first teased the song on Feb. 7 on his Twitter, Instagram and TikTok in an animation video that celebrated LeBron James passing Kareem Abdul-Jabbar to become the NBA’s all-time leading scorer.
The 51-year-old entertainer had success in the ‘90s with music, including the platinum-selling album Shaq Diesel, released in 1993. It featured the gold-selling singles “What’s Up Doc? (Can We Rock)” and “(I Know I Got) Skillz” — which both cracked the Top 40 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart — as well as collaborations with late A Tribe Called Quest rapper Phife Dawg, Def Jef and Fu-Schnickens. Some of the tracks were produced by Epmd’s Erick Sermon and Tribe’s Ali Shaheed Muhammad.

Since its 2002 genesis, the Tribeca Film Festival has celebrated music to a degree uncommon in the film fest world, and the 2022 event gathering again includes a wide array of music-focused events, including not just documentaries and music-centric narrative features but music video premieres, artist conversations, and master classes.
The overlap between film and music is evident right from the start Wednesday night, when the festival will host the world premiere of Jennifer Lopez’s Netflix documentary, “Halftime.” The doc follows the singer’s evolution as an artist, from her performances onscreen and on stages around the world to her 2020 Super Bowl halftime show and beyond.
This year, the lineup will also incorporate songwriters and producers in conversation, including what will surely be a full house at the Beacon Theater for Taylor Swift as she shows and talks about her “All Too Well” short film. Also on deck for conversations are Pharrell Williams,...

Tribeca Festival, the event that wants to offer something for everyone, returns Wednesday with its sprawling collection of features and shorts, live music, TV, podcasts, games, and Ar/VR. The annual New York City-set fest has moved mostly back indoors this year, but will feature nods to 2021 like free outdoor screenings and an online edition, Tribeca At Home. A rich documentary slate tackles abortion, press freedom and the rise of social media. There’s a first-time award for environmental impact and a series of talks with Blackhouse Foundation centered on Poc storytelling.
“We’re an activist festival,” said Jane Rosenthal, co-founder with Robert De Niro and CEO of Tribeca Enterprises. “When you think back to how we founded the festival, we’ve always been political,” she added, a nod to the duo launching Tribeca after the September 11 terrorist attacks to buck up a physically and emotionally devastated neighborhood.

Terry Crews’ John Henry is a man of few words. “John Henry,” the folklore-cribbing, violent thriller (opening theatrically and available on demand) about a former gang member who must face his demons when two young immigrants require his help, feels like it wants to say a lot. But what exactly?
Utilizing horror-movie gestures and ladling spaghetti Western sauce on top, first-time director Will Forbes has made a movie stuffed with images of monstrous black men. That was likely not his intention. But it does show what can go awry with when promiscuous genre-borrowing trumps culturally aware storytelling (Doug Skinner co-wrote). Think of it as a Jordan Peele counter-effect.
Still, it’s hard not to love a massive man who’s comfortable with a small, fluffy dog. John Henry’s pup meets its untimely end on a Compton street early in the B movie. One might pity the fool who was...

Gospel and secular music are often viewed as distinct spheres with little to no overlap. But don’t tell that to writer-producer Warryn Campbell, who has been hopping industry fences between rap, R&b, and gospel for two decades — and won Grammy awards for his work in each genre.

Bronx rapper Tim Dog, aka Timothy Blair, has died of a seizure caused by complications related to diabetes. He was 46. Though he was originally affiliated with groups like Ultramagnetic MCs and Krs-One’s Boogie Down Productions, Dog was best known musically for “Fuck Compton,” a track from his 1991 solo debut Penicillin On Wax. “Fuck Compton” dissed the burgeoning West Coast gangsta scene in general and N.W.A. in particular, featuring shots at Dr. Dre, Eazy E, and Ice Cube. The track provoked lyrical responses from Compton’s Most Wanted, DJ Quik, and Dr. Dre himself (“Fuck Wit ...

Hip-hop's premier music festival is back. On Tuesday, Guerilla Union held a press conference to reveal its lineup of hip-hop all-stars for Rock the Bells 2012. Freestyler extraordinaire Supernatural delivered the list of performers one-by-one with an impromptu rap, rattling off names like Wiz Khalifa, Kid Cudi, Nas, J. Cole and Mac Miller, as well as veteran acts like Missy Elliott, Timbaland and Bone Thugs-n-Harmony.
Lupe Fiasco's name also appears on the festival's flyer, but on Wednesday morning (May 16), the Chi-Town lyricist tweeted that despite what was printed, he would not be in attendance this year. "Not doing Rock The Bellz...thats a typo fam and friends...," he wrote.
For the first time in nine years, Rock the Bells will expand its daylong festival to two days.

Happy 40th Birthday Snoop Dogg!
The legendary Doggfather hosted a private birthday party at the Rolling Stone Lounge last night in Los Angeles. I'm sure there was plenty of Gin & Juice to go around -- Snoop even tweeted, "#puffpuffpasstuesdays" before the event.
The guest list was the cream of the hip-hop crop. Dr. Dre, Warren G, DJ Quik and members of the Far East Movement were all in attendance. They partied with actor Tyrese (who tweeted, "Happy birthday Og!! Dre what up!!"), Mlb star Matt Kemp, and Russell Westbrook of the Oklahoma City Thunder. It goes without saying that Snoop's wife Shante was there by his side -- he even tweeted a photo of them together titled, "Me n my boo".

Tupac Shakur's rigorous recording habits ensured that the late rapper would continue to make a musical impact, even in the afterlife. Since his death in 1996, fans have been treated to albums' worth of posthumous 'Pac records, but the two records that leaked onto the Internet late Tuesday night are sure to cause a stir.
A far cry from Shakur's uplifting tunes like "Changes" and " 'Til the End of Time," the two new tracks, "NY 87" and an alternate version of the little-known "Watch Yo Mouth," take aim at East Coast rap artists like the Notorious B.I.G., Diddy, Mobb Deep, Nas, De La Soul and former 'Pac ally Dr. Dre.

DJ Quik -- one of the biggest names in hip hop -- took over a marijuana dispensary in Los Angeles yesterday for his album release party ... and in a matter of minutes, the whole place was up in smoke. We're told Quik was extremely mellow during the party (duh) ... and through the cloud of weed smog, signed autographs, performed a few songs from the new album " Book of David " ... and ate a piece of a special pot-themed cake.

The sibling duo are currently in the process of writing their songs. Talking about what they want to do for their debut, they included The Game, DJ Quik and Uncle Snoop in their collaborator wish list. "[I want] make it like my father," Nigel said. Nate added, "Like father, like son, you know?"

Yesterday we posted the extremely sad news of Nate Dogg‘s death. His passing was met with a fair amount of shock because the entertainer was only 41 years old, and no details had emerged about what caused him to die. While the official cause hasn’t yet been stated, Nate’s family is speaking out about what the possible cause could be. His manager and close friend Rod McGrew said he was, “95% recovered from the first stroke in 2007.” Nate had suffered two strokes — one in 2007 and one in 2008 — which left him partial paralyzed and with memory loss. What’s confusing about this is that McGrew revealed that Nate had “cognitively recovered,” and was functioning and alert in the days leading up to his death.
Either way, McGrew’s given a statement on the family’s (and his) behalf that reads, “We appreciate the enormous outpouring of response from all over the world.

Sunday night's 2010 Bet Awards had no shortage of surprising, thrilling and emotional moments. There was Chris Brown's stirring tribute to Michael Jackson (which saw the embattled singer deftly pull off some of the late Jackson's most classic dance moves before his vocal performance was undone by tears), an incredible salute to Prince (featuring the likes of Alicia Keys, Patti Labelle and Janelle Monae) and savage performances by both Eminem (with B.o.B) and Drake. But perhaps the most pleasantly surprising moment of the evening came when El DeBarge graced the stage for a run through some of his biggest hits.
