Saudi Arabia's first female film-maker on segregation, her 11 siblings and driving to her wedding in a golf cart
Your debut film, Wadjda, about a 10-year-old girl living in Riyadh, who dreams of owning a green bicycle, is the first full-length feature shot entirely inside Saudi Arabia. Is it autobiographical?
I come from a small, conservative town in Saudi Arabia where there are many girls like Wadjda who have big dreams and so much potential. These girls can, and will, reshape our nation.
In Saudi, women are not allowed to work alongside men and they can't vote until 2015. Yet your female characters have a lot of will…
It's very important to celebrate resistance, pursuing one's dreams. Sometimes, it's easy to make a character in a place such as Saudi a victim; people exploit them, they give up hope.
Did you always plan to open the film with Wadjda wearing trainers under her abaya?...

Glenn Beck's conspiracy theory about the Boston Marathon bombing is making waves this week. He claims that there is a Saudi connection to the attack on April 15 despite those claims already being debunked by the Department of Homeland Security.
Saudi national Abdul Rahman Ali Alharbi was initially a suspect of the bombings after he was reportedly in violation of the Immigration and Nationality Act. Alharbi was later dropped as a suspect, but he is still being deported because his United States visa has expired. Beck claims there is a deeper conspiracy going on here.
You can watch Beck's claims above. "The burden of proof is on the federal government, and so far they have not presented one shred of evidence that refutes what the Blaze has reported," he says.

Conservative radio host Glenn Beck told his audience with certainty on Monday that the Saudi national who was detained and deported in the immediate wake of the Boston bombings last week, Abdul Rahman Ali Alharbi, was involved in the attack on the Boston Marathon. Beck alleged an elaborate series of events which led to the fast deportation of Alharbi. He said that these events, in combination with meetings between ranking officials American federal government and Saudi authorities, raise troubling concerns.

Silver Linings Playbook director David O Russell's FBI conman drama reported to be titled American Hustle
David O Russell's forthcoming conman drama about the FBI's late-1970s Abscam sting operation finally appears to have a title. Having previously been reported under the name American Bullshit, the film now has the rather more marketable American Hustle for a moniker.
The title was revealed by the usually reliable Us website Box Office Mojo, which tracks the financial success of movies. American Hustle reunites many of the key cast members of Russell's Oscar-winning comedy drama Silver Linings Playbook, including Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Russell and Robert De Niro. They will be joined by Christian Bale and Amy Adams from his film The Fighter, as well as Russell debutants Jeremy Renner, Jack Huston, Louis Ck and Michael Pena.

Actor to rejoin Silver Linings Playbook director and co-star Bradley Cooper for drama based on 70s FBI sting operation
Jennifer Lawrence will reunite with her Silver Linings Playbook director David O Russell on the latter's forthcoming conman drama about the Abscam sting operation run by the FBI in the late 1970s.
Lawrence, who is Oscar-nominated for her role in Silver Linings Playbook, joins a stellar cast for Russell's movie, including Playbook co-star Bradley Cooper, Christian Bale and Amy Adams (both of whom worked with Russell on The Fighter), and Jeremy Renner.
Originally titled American Bullshit, the film is based on real-life events that saw the FBI use a known con artist called Melvin Weinberg to pose as an Arab businessman, Kambir Abdul Rahman, and expose corruption of public officials. Russell's movie is not a direct replication of events, but will see Bale play a conman working with an "out-of-control federal...

The actor will be reunited with the director of The Fighter, for which Bale won an Oscar, in a story about a shyster hired to take down corrupt politicians
Christian Bale has returned to the role of a shyster hired by the FBI to take down corrupt politicians in David O Russell's forthcoming conman drama.
Bale, who won the best supporting actor Oscar for his turn as boxer Dicky Eklund in Russell's The Fighter, was reported to have left the project earlier this year, but has now signed on. The as-yet-untitled film is also due to star The Fighter's Amy Adams, along with Bradley Cooper and Jeremy Renner.
Like The Fighter, Russell's new film is based on a true story, though there appear to be significant differences between real-life events and the version playing out on screen. Eric Warren Singer's screenplay for the movie, which was once titled American Bullshit,...

Man City have been rather quiet in the current transfer window. With more focus towards shipping out excess squad players Roberto Mancini is yet to bring in a new player to the Etihad Arena.
All this could soon be different come the start of the new Premier League campaign, in a week’s time, as UAE midfield maestro Omar Abdul Rahman has been given a one week trial with the Premier League champions after attracting serious attention and praise from critics and audiences worldwide whilst playing in the Olympics.
Although his tenure was very short, Rahman was arguably the find of the Olympics. Only 20, Rahman currently plays for United Arab Emirates based club Al-Ain where former Sunderland striker Asamoah Gyan is a team mate.
His David Luiz-like hair grabbed attention anyway but it was the sweet left foot of the UAE starlet that many were impressed by. The young midfielder...

As Western airstrikes began this weekend, Libyan residents fled their homes with just the clothes on their backs-and some of them are upset over the West's late actions. Babak Dehghanpisheh reports from Libya.
Dozens of cars streamed into the border crossing between Libya and Egypt yesterday evening. There were sedans with suitcases strapped on top and pickup trucks loaded high with cushions and furniture. Nearly all of the dust-covered vehicles had one thing in common: the number eight in the license plate, the code for Benghazi, the rebel capital which was brutally attacked by the forces of Muammar Ghaddafi on Saturday.
Related story on The Daily Beast: My Harrowing Libya Escape
Cars honked their horns to get through the crowds and the smell of exhaust fumes was thick in the air. A small fight broke out as hustlers tried to take money from one panicked family. Wandering through this chaotic scene was Hana Gallal,...

Call him Affleck, director Ben Affleck!
Right after The Town, we’re all wondering which project will he choose for his next directorial effort.
Well, guess what, the word now is that Affleck is considering American Bullshit to be the next one. Nice title, except Eric Warren Singer‘s script was #30 on last year’s Black List…
At this moment we know that the script follows “the true story of the FBI’s 1980 undercover sting operation of Congress, dubbed Abscam, which was designed to root out corruption and was the brainchild of a con man.”
But, thanks to Wikipedia, we have even more details about the whole thing:
”The FBI set up “Abdul Enterprises, Ltd.” in 1978 FBI employees posed as Kraim Abdul Rahman, a fictional Middle Eastern sheikh, in videotaped talks with government officials, where they offered money in return for political favors to a non-existent sheikh.
A house, along...

Ben Affleck is currently looking for his next directing gig. The actor made his directorial debut with Gone Baby Gone, which I thought was great. He followed that up with The Town, which I thought sucked but everyone else in the world seemed to like. Now there's a chance his next film will be American Bullshit, the script of which was ranked #30 on the best unproduced screenplay Black List.
The script was written by Eric Warren Singer, and is drama that's described as “the true story of Abscam, the FBI's 1980 undercover sting operation of Congress to root out corruption which was the brainchild of the world's greatest con man.”
That sounds like it could be a really good movie, and I think Affleck could do a great job with developing it for the big screen. According to Deadline, "Affleck hasn’t committed, but is seriously mulling this among several projects that include The Trade,...

Fans of the late Kishore Kumar will be pleased to know that one of his unreleased songs will be unveiled on Wednesday this week. This date will fall on the singer’s 23rd death anniversary.
The song, 'Ladkiyon ko chahiye who college mein seekhlein' was composed by the late Madan Mohan. Never heard before, the song will be released on www.madanmohan.in
Like many of Kishore’s songs, this particular one has been described as “naughty and situational” and was recorded in the 1970s for a film that was shelved.
'Aaj mujhe jal jane bhi' from the album, Tere Bagair is another Kishore-Kumar-Madan Mohan song which was released last year. Together, they delivered hits like 'Zaroorat hai ek shrimati ki', 'Dil dil se milakar dekho', 'Aye haseenon nazneenon' and' Mera naam Abdul Rahman'.

The first rule of running an unfree society is to never to let your bureaucrats appear on camera. When Saudi Arabian Ministry of Culture and Information undersecretary Abdul Rahman al-Hazzaa appeared on Arabic-language news network al-Arabiya for a short interview on Thursday, September 23, the goal was to put a positive spin on a new electronic media law. Instead, al-Hazzaa sparked a media furor after his comments implied Saudi Arabian bloggers would be required to register with their government.
As explained by al-Hazzaa, the new electronic media law would give the Saudi government sweeping powers to monitor the Internet. Walaa Hawari of the Arab News reported that the undersecretary said he was going to treat any Internet content--including personal blogs and forum posts--the same as printed matter, which the kingdom subjects to strict censorship and monitoring.
Techcrunch reported that Saudi Arabians "would soon need a license to blog." But they won't.

Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah has waived a sentence given to a female journalist. Rozana al-Yami, 22, was sentenced to 60 lashes by a court in the Red Sea city of Jeddah for having worked part-time in Saudi Arabia for the Saudi-owned Lebanese network Lbc on a sexual confessions programme but the monarch has now intervened. According to Information Ministry spokesman Abdul Rahman al-Hazaa, Abdullah has "asked the ministry of justice to drop the lashing and ordered the transfer of the cases to the ministry of information." The king's order also affects that of another female journalist, believed to be named Iman Rajab, who also worked on 'Bold Red Line'. According to Yami, the judge in her case said that Lbc...
