The nation’s largest newspaper chain, Gannett, continued its cost cutting measures today, announcing a hiring freeze, a mandatory unpaid five-day leave for every employee this December, a six-month sabbatical, a suspension of 401K matches from the company, voluntary severance offer for those who want to retire or leave the company and an optional four-day workweek.
“While these actions are tough, they are critical to Gannett’s long-term success,” CEO and Chairman Michael Reed told employees during a Wednesday company-wide meeting that, according to at least one employee, lasted all of 15 minutes. Reed said the moves “ensure we are prepared to withstand the uncertainty that lies ahead.”
New York Times Media Reporter Ben Mullin got ahold of Reed’s memo to staff.

Timeless Media have released the epic 1976 adventure film Shout at the Devil as a Blu-ray/DVD combo pack. The movie, produced by Michael Klinger and directed by Peter Hunt, is an big budget affair very much in the style of John Huston's The Man Who Would Be King, which was released the previous year. Both films follow the antics of a couple of charismatic rogues in exotic settings. The film is based on the novel by author Wilbur Smith, who also co-wrote the screenplay. The movie was shot in between Roger Moore's second and third James Bond films, The Man With the Golden Gun and The Spy Who Loved Me and boasts a "who's who" of Eon Productions talent. Peter Hunt had edited the early Bond films and directed On Her Majesty's Secret Service. Ironically, Moore and Hunt never worked on a 007 film together but in...

We take a look at some potential turning points that could have altered the Bond legacy significantly...
007 lists resurrection amongst his hobbies, but speculation is our game today. Your own ideal fantasy James Bond film probably depends on what sort of Bond you're into. If you like serious Bond, you probably consider it a crying shame that Timothy Dalton didn't get to make at least one more film. A fair proportion of the fandom consider Never Say Never Again to be one of the worst of the series, so for them, rolling the dice on a 1976 production with a different actor and a more exciting script would have been worth it.
Furthermore, a Sony Pictures produced rival film with, say, Liam Neeson in the late 1990s could have been fascinating. How about Connery returning to the role in his 60s? All of these possibilities...

This weekend’s B-Sides is the theme song to the 1992 direct-to-video action movie Talons of the Eagle. This song is not for your listening pleasure. This song is a dare – a challenge. Can you listen to the whole thing from beginning to end?
I have never seen Talons of the Eagle. Kind of surprising given it starred Billy Blanks and I was all about those cheesy direct-to-video action movies around the time this came out. The Devil's Rejects' Priscilla Barnes co-stars, and here’s the plot according to the IMDb:
After three DEA agents are killed by Mr. Li (James Hong), martial arts champion Tyler Wilson (Blanks) is sent on assignment to Toronto and teams up with Michael Reed (Jalal Merhi). Wilson and Reed enter a martial arts tournament, where they end up saving Mr. Li from being killed by a rival crime boss. Li invites the two to join his staff.

Reviewing a band’s debut album is difficult. It may be fantastic because it is the result of years of hard work or it may be underwhelming but show the roots of what the band could become in the future. Either way it is often hard to fully grasp where a band is coming from on the back of one full length release. Bauer make it easy. Having been around for the best part of a decade as a support act, Greg Matthews, Neil Treppas, Lee Bradbury and Michael Reed have produced a debut that is so assured it leaves you in no doubt as to what this band are about.
There is a Dutch band that shares the same name but from the first word there can be no confusion. This Bauer are obviously a Manchester band. They have the lifeblood of the city’s...

New former General with shady secrets arriving in this new Castle season 6 spoiler. According to a new report from TV Guide, the Castle season 6 folks are bringing on a new, former General guy that is going to go all out to hide secrets from his past, which makes it seem like they must be some pretty shady secrets. The General's name is Michael Reed, and he's described as being "a former general who will stop at nothing to protect the secrets of his past." It's also speculated that he could be involved in Washington where Beckett has been offered a new job. The General will be played by actor Glenn Morshower (left), and will just be a guest fixture on the show, so we probably won't be seeing him too much. Glenn Morshower's acting credits includes a past role in 24 as Secret Service agent Aaron Pierce. He also appeared...

Duchess Catherine is descended from Cambridge University academics. The British royal - who before her marriage to Prince William was known as Kate Middleton - has a great great-grandfather, Francis Martineau Lupton, and a great great grand-uncle, Sir Charles Lupton, who were both academics at Trinity College Cambridge. Both relatives came from a rich and successful family, with Sir Charles the founder of the world's largest law firm, Dla Piper. The link was made by Australian history teacher Michael Reed and his pupils during a class project in Melbourne, Australia. Michael was intrigued when he first discovered the Duchess' second cousin, thrice removed, is Newnham College, Cambridge, graduate Lady Barbara Bullock. He said: 'This all stems from a class...

On Her Majesty’s Secret Service
Written by Richard Maibaum
Directed by Peter Hunt
UK, 1969
To call On Her Majesty’s Secret Service underappreciated is to call the sky blue. Only in the years since the release of Daniel Craig’s introduction to the series, Casino Royale, has Ohmss begun to be reappraised as a realistic, character-driven approach to the Bond series. Its failure at the box office compared to the Connery entries that preceded it led to the producers, Albert “Cubby” Broccoli and Harry Salzman, returning to the Goldfinger formula of larger than life villains, iconic henchmen, ludicrously elaborate take-over-the-world schemes, and a generally heightened sense to the proceedings, all of which are noticeably absent from Ohmss.
Sean Connery had a rough experience during filming of 1967′s You Only Live Twice. The media scrutiny, long filming periods, and promotional duties caused him to leave the role that had made his career.

Hammer Blu-rays The Devil Rides Out (1968, dir. Terence Fisher)
Hammer applies its trademark Gothic veneer with considerably greater care than usual in this, the second and best of the company's three stabs at the satanic stylings of author Dennis Wheatley. Christopher Lee comes over to the light for a rare foray as central hero the Duc de Richleau, teaming up with friend Rex van Rijn (Leon Greene) to prevent the evil Satanist Mocata (Charles Gray) from enmeshing the son of his old friend (Patrick Mower) into a devil-worshipping cult.
The Devil Rides Out is perhaps best remembered for what Lee argues in his commentary to be Hammer's most enduring image, that of our heroes fighting a series of spectral and psychological nemeses from within the protective confines of a ritual circle. And yet the most chilling scene contains no special effects, but is instead a simple conversation between the wife...

Kevin Costner's epic adventure The Postman was released in 1997 to a mixed reception. Here, Michael Reed argues that still it has a lot going for it…
"When bad men combine, the good must associate; else they will fall one by one, an unpitied sacrifice in a contemptible struggle." Edmund Burke
The Postman is a post-apocalyptic adventure based on the David Brin novel of the same name. Director and star Kevin Costner delivered a film of epic proportions, both in terms of storytelling and its hefty 178-minute running time.
Although an ambitious and heartfelt effort, the film received negative reviews, and did woeful business at the box office. You can summarise reviewers' negative assessment in one word: overindulgence. In deference to those critics, it does feature periodic descents into over-sentimentality, an obese approach to the cutting of scenes and dialogue that often clunks.
However, I contend that if viewed as...

Are There Big Bucks in Daytime Soaps?
By Isobel Silden
The Baltimore Sun
July 27, 1980
The names may not be blaring from the headlines of the movie magazines in the supermarkets, but the top soap opera actors are genuine stars with an adoring--or sometimes angry--public. And there are jealousies, salary disputes and ego problems. Here, in the last of a five-part series, is a look behind the scenes of the soaps.
Everyone involved with daytime TV, either as a performer or a viewer, has favorite cherished stories.
Helen Gallagher (Maeve on Ryan's Hope) says producer Claire Labine cherishes one specific letter. "It was from a girl who'd been raped. She wrote Helen that the aftermath with the police was so awful, she tried to think of the nicest thing she could. That was Maeve Ryan. Helen cries when she talks about it."
Still, all is not sweetness and light with every actor on every soap.

A film easily missed among this summer’s superhero blockbusters, Mark finds much to enjoy in Massy Tadjedin's drama, Last Night…
Last Night is the type of film that could easily be swept away during the summer, amongst box office juggernauts like X-Men: First Class, and sure enough, it's failed to make a splash in this week's UK box office top ten.
Its main similarity to First Class then, is that I very much saw it as a film of two halves. At least, in this case, the divide is integral. Keira Knightley and Sam Worthington play the lead characters, Joanna and Michael Reed, a married couple who deal with issues of fidelity and temptation when they spend one night apart.
We begin with Joanna taking Michael to task over his fondness for Laura, an attractive female colleague played by Eva Mendes. She suspects that he might pursue an affair with her,...

Temptation is the name of the game of The Jacket writer Massy Tadjedin’s quietly profound directorial debut, Last Night. The temptation of such an intriguingly sexy and good-looking cast of Keira Knightley, Sam Worthington, Eva Mendes and French actor Guillaume Canet is the film’s obvious draw, and what drives a story full of acute observations and exquisite nuances. But this slow burner, which increases in intensity and passionate purpose, really impacts after viewing, posing the thought-provoking debate of whether long-term adoration is worse than the physical act of a one-night stand?
Professional couple, Joanna (Knightley) and husband Michael Reed (Worthington) have an affluent middle-class existence and apparent marital bliss, when doubt creeps in after Joanna spots her betrothed having an intimate balcony meeting with a very attractive and flirtatious work colleague, Laura (Mendes), at a party. Suspicion fuels a marital quarrel back home, the night before Michael is...

Last Night
Director: Massy Tadjedin
Writer/director Massy Tadjedin’s Last Night shares its title with Don McKellar’s 1998 Canadian comedy drama about the end of the world. But despite recent biblical (non-) events, the only rapture on offer here is of the adulterous kind – in the beguiling shape of Eva Mendes and Guillaume Canet.
Joanna and Michael Reed (played by Keira Knightley and Sam Worthington) occupy one of those enviably spacious Manhattan lofts seen mainly in Hollywood movies. He’s in real estate; she’s working up to the Great American Novel by writing about fashion. Despite all that square footage, Joanna prefers to do her wardrobe changes in the middle of the kitchen. I think this is cinematic shorthand for telling us that the Reeds are very busy people.
At a lifeless office party, Michael clumsily introduces Joanna to his (not-so) new colleague Laura (Eva Mendes). Shortly afterwards,...

With a sky-high divorce rate the norm — 50 percent of first-time marrieds divorce — the words “until death do us part” seem to have almost no meaning. These days, “forever” tends to feel more like “until something shiny catches my eye.”
Which makes “Last Night” a refreshing film to see on the big screen. This look at adult relationships includes zero car chases, explosions, superheroes or vomit jokes (though there is a lot of drinking). In other words, it’s a film for grown-ups.
Joanna (Keira Knightley) and Michael Reed (Sam Worthington) live and work in New York and have been married for three years, though their relationship is about seven years old. (Why a Brit and an Aussie are living in Gotham is never explained.

Fresh "Last Night" clip is now available online. In the one-minute video, Keira Knightley's Joanna has a dinner with Griffin Dunne's Truman in a local restaurant, where she is pressed with questions about her personal life and her husband.
The drama movie centers on Knightley's Joanna and Sam Worthington's Michael Reed. After attending one of Michael's business parties, Joanna notices a curious moment between him and his co-worker Laura, who is portrayed by Eva Mendes. The happily married couple then is tempted to stray as Michael goes on a business trip with Laura while Joanna encounters her past love, played by Guillaume Canet, at home.
Massy Tadjedin serves behind the lens and writes the scripts for the film. Meanwhile, Stephanie Romanov, Scott Adsit, and Daniel Eric Gold are among other actors supporting the movie. "Last Night" will have limited release in the U.S. on May 6.

Tribeca Film is teaming with Miramax to release some of the films that were left in the Miramax library when Disney closed the label a while back; one of them is Last Night, in which Keira Knightley and Sam Worthington play a married couple who, when separated for a night, end up confronting temptation. There's a new trailer for the film, which you can see after the break. I've heard good things about the film, and it is certainly good to see Sam Worthington out of blockbuster mode. And this trailer is well-cut, but there's something here that doesn't get me all that interested in the film. Maybe much of the conclusion just seems preordained. Still, if you're ready for a relationship drama that doesn't have quite the bite of a film like Closer, this might be the thing. Apple [1] has the trailer in HD. Last Night opens limited on...

After an onslaught of promo and international trailers I feel somewhat confident to declare we have the final theatrical trailer for Massy Tadjedin‘s (anti-)romantic drama Last Night. I saw the film starring Keira Knightley, Sam Worthington, Eva Mendes, and Guillaume Canet at Tiff last fall and quite liked it. It will also show at the Tribeca Film Festival before hitting theaters soon after. This theatrical trailer is somewhat of a gem. There are no voice-overs and we have a clear lack of glitz and flash, something quite refreshing. Check it out below via Apple.

Sam Worthington has admitted that he would rather filming fighting scenes in "Avatar" than making out with Keira Knightley in 2010 movie "Last Night". The 33-year-old recently told Live magazine, "To be honest I craved a gun and a sword while I was doing 'Last Night' opposite Keira Knightley. I didn't get the same kind of rush from the kissing scenes."
