The long awaited follow up to Rob Reiner’s comedy classic This Is Spinal Tap has begun filming, lots of musical cameos have also been confirmed.
There is only one comedy film which turns the laughs up to eleven, and that is if course Rob Reiner’s 1984 classic This Is Spinal Tap. Though technically The Comic Strip team of Rik Mayall, Adrian Edmondson, Nigel Planer, Jennifer Saunders, Dawn French and Peter Richardson got there first a year earlier with the excellent Bad News, which is well worth seeking out of you’ve never had the pleasure.
This Is Spinal Tap is often cited as one of the funniest films ever made, with musicians frequently applauding the accuracy of several scenes, from petty band squabbles to getting lost backstage and over the top props onstage.

The truth is, if Slow Horses aired on the BBC, it would be all anyone talked about. It’s that good. Frankly, it’s a higher calibre offering than many dramas on prime time TV, but, because it airs on Apple TV+, a streaming service currently with fewer than two million UK subscribers, it’s yet to get the popularity it deserves.
If you haven’t yet watched the first two series of this spy thriller, let us catch you up on why you absolutely should before Slow Horses Series 3 comes out, hopefully later this year.
Based on Mick Herron’s Slough House novel series, the show centres on a team of haphazard MI5 agents who have variously disgraced themselves on the job. While their offences aren’t quite P45-worthy, it’s enough to get them exiled from MI5 HQ to a supposedly boring admin role at the depressingly dingy Slough House,...

New TV shows are like Pokémon. There are bloody loads of them, each with only the faintest of differences from the next, and apparently, you’ve gotta catch ‘em all. To help us all do that, we need solid recommendations so we don’t end up wasting hours of life that we could otherwise spend watching sunsets and embracing our loved ones.
Below are a selection of new shows from last year that our writers were frustrated not to find on our Best of 2022 lists. These are all great shows, some critically underappreciated, some highly reviewed but underwatched, and some quiet joys simply drowned out by all the other TV noise. Please add your own recommendations to the pile below.

New Delhi, Dec 11 (Ians) Smartphone shipments are to remain flat in 2023 amid a global slowdown, as it is expected to continue underperforming through the first half of the year and start rising only from the third quarter of the year, a new report has shown.
According to Counterpoint Research, the global smartphone market will see 2 per cent (year-on-year) growth in 2023.
Smartphone shipments for 2022 lowered to 1.24 billion units on economic headwinds from the previous forecast.
“Persistent inflation, expectations of future interest rate hikes, souring corporate earnings, China’s stalled economy, the protracted Ukraine-Russia war, political turmoil in Europe, and a sweeping new set of export controls on China from the US, all contributes to the downward adjustment of the smartphone market forecast,” said Peter Richardson, Vice President at Counterpoint Research.

New Delhi, Dec 4 (Ians) China’s Byd Auto remained the global market leader, shipping more than 537,000 Ev units — an increase of 197 per cent (on-year) — in the third quarter this year, leaving Elon Musk-run Tesla far behind globally.
On the other hand, Tesla’s global sales grew only 43 per cent YoY in Q3 2022 to over 343,000 units, according to Counterpoint Research.
“The smoothing production ramp in Tesla’s Berlin factory helped deliver a record number of Model Ys in Germany this quarter. However, deliveries fell short of expectations due to logistics bottlenecks,” the report mentioned.
Byd’s top three models — Byd Song, Byd Qin and Byd Han — contributed to over 56 per cent of the company’s sales during the quarter.
Byd’s overseas operations have been picking up fast as it sold almost 17,000 Ev units across various regions including Europe, Latin America, Southeast Asia, Middle East and Africa, and Oceania in Q3.

Robbie Coltrane, who has died aged 72, arrived on television in the 1980s as one of the new breed of “alternative” comedy performers. A decade later, he was making an even greater impact as the flawed criminal psychologist in Cracker. Then, moving into a new century, he was a favourite with younger audiences as Hagrid in the Harry Potter films.
He came to the fore in The Comic Strip Presents satirical films for television alongside other new faces such as Peter Richardson, Adrian Edmondson, Jennifer Saunders and Dawn French.
From the first story, Five Go Mad in Dorset, the spoofs gave Channel 4, newly launched in 1982, the subversive edge it sought in being different from the TV establishment.
Coltrane was very much part of that establishment, but at its gritty, hard-hitting centre, when he was cast as Dr Eddie Fitzgerald – “Fitz” – in Cracker (1993-96), former Brookside writer Jimmy McGovern’s creation...

“Clarkson’s Farm,” the surprise pastoral smash hit from Amazon Prime Video, has been greenlit for a third season, with production already underway.
The show follows former “Top Gear” host Jeremy Clarkson as he re-locates from London to the English countryside and tries to run a farm (called Diddly Squat) often with disastrous results. Fortunately, his trusty farmhands Kaleb, Gerald and Charlie – as well as his wife Lisa – are there to help the man who has been dubbed “Britain’s most unlikely farmer.”
A second season of the show, featuring both familiar and new faces, is set to launch in early 2023 and will see the team deal with new animals and crops as well as an ongoing feud with the local council as Clarkson attempt to open a restaurant on the farm.
According to local news reports, West Oxfordshire district council has twice rejected Clarkson’s attempts to open an eatery at Diddly Squat,...

New Delhi, Oct 7 (Ians) The connected car penetration surpassed that of non-connected cars for the first time ever globally, capturing almost 50.5 per cent share in the second quarter (Q2) this year.
5G-ready car sales surpassed half a million, though 4G accounted for 90 per cent of connected car sales.
According to Counterpoint Research, the US overtook China to lead the global connected car market and the top five automakers were Volkswagen, Toyota, Gm, Stellantis and Hyundai.
The US, China and Europe accounted for nearly 80 per cent of connected car sales in the quarter.
“The US market trailed China in terms of connected car sales in the first quarter of this year. However, with the resurgence of Covid-19 and plant shutdowns in China from March onwards, the US overtook China,” said senior analyst Soumen Mandal.
According to the report, automakers are focusing on using powerful on-board computers for next-generation connected mobility.

With the average selling prices (Asp) likely to continue declining by double-digits in the near future, it is expected that one out of every two smartphones sold globally will support 5G by the end of 2022, a new report showed on Monday.
In Q1 2021, within just one year after the launch of the world's first commercial 5G network, almost one out of every three smartphones sold worldwide was supported by 5G.
Developed markets have been driving 5G adoption. However, this is expected to change as more emerging markets are starting to launch commercial 5G services, according to a white paper released by smartphone brand realme and Counterpoint Research.
In 2020, 5G phones in the low-to-mid-range price segments accounted for nearly 40 per cent of all 5G devices sold.

New Delhi, March 11 (Ians) Facebook-owned Oculus virtual reality (VR) headsets captured 53 per cent of the extended reality (Xr) headset shipments in 2020 which declined 9 per cent (on-year), a new report has said.
According to latest research from Counterpoint's 'Global Xr Model Tracker,' the annual decline was less than expected thanks to the Oculus Quest 2 performance during the holiday season.
The improved specifications like increased memory, larger battery life, and higher resolution and refresh rate, at an affordable price point were the clear drivers for Oculus growth.
"VR headsets captured more than 90 per cent of the total Xr shipments. The adoption of VR, mainly for standalone form-factor, is increasing, as the industry is showing significant advancements in design, specifications and features at reasonable prices," said Research Director Peter Richardson.
Additionally, the availability of good-quality content across platforms is growing.

New Delhi, Dec 23 (Ians) Apple is likely to break previous sales records during its fiscal first quarter (October-December period) as the iPhone 12 is set to bolster global quarterly shipment growth for all iPhones to 21 per cent year-over-year (YoY), industry tracker Counterpoint Research said on Wednesday.

"What we're seeing is a combination of things driving iPhone growth globally," Peter Richardson, Global Head of Research at Counterpoint, said in a statement.
These include pent up demand for a new 5G iPhone with both operators and consumers hungry for the new iPhone products, attractive prices on the iPhone 12 aided by bountiful promotional offers.

Isaac Ezban
Mexico, 2015
Mexico’s Isaac Ezban is two for two with his follow-up to last year’s gripping psychological thriller The Incident. Combining equal parts 50’s sci-fi b-movies and lost Twilight Zone episodes, The Similars is an entertaining, tongue-in-cheek black comedy with just the right amount of gore. Right from the start writer/director Ezban revels in the trappings of 60s aesthetics, opening with a Saul Bass-style credit sequence, a Bernard Herrmann-inspired score, a soundtrack that includes classic surf music and a voiceover that brings to mind The Outer Limits.
The Similars begins with a very simple set up as an omniscient narrator fills us in on how a bunch of strangers came together (by chance or fate) to the desolate bus station which serves as the only location in the lean 89 minute feature. The year is 1968 and a heavy rain...

Dimension Films and Trancas International Films announced today that Halloween Returns, the next installment in the landmark Halloween horror franchise, will roll cameras this July, cementing Michael Meyers’ long-awaited return to the big screen.
Saw writers Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton penned the script for the new take, which is said to act as a “recalibration” for the series. Dunstan, the mastermind behind horror duology The Collector and The Collection, is also directing, with Malek Akkad producing.
Dunstan and Melton already have many successful collaborations under their collective belts. Their take on The Outer Limits is currently in development over at MGM, while they’ve also worked on Universal’s God of War and recently sold Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark as a pitch to CBS Films, which is still developing it into a film.

Plot: A computer programmer gets the opportunity to meet his reclusive boss at his vast estate; he soon learns that he's been brought there to test out an artificial intelligence... one that looks like a young woman. Review: Alex Garland, screenwriter of fan favorites 28 Days Later, Sunshine and Dredd, makes a compelling directorial debut with Ex MacHina, a claustrophobic sci-fi mindgame that's like if Alfred Hitchcock had directed an episode of The Outer Limits. Any Halloween fan will tell you that, as far as Michael Myers goes, one thing is for certain – the guy doesn’t stay dead for long. Dimension Films is actively plotting the fearsome killer’s latest return to the big screen, and in order to get the ball rolling on what one source called a franchise “recalibration,” the studio has hired Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan, the screenwriting duo behind multiple Saw movies, to pen the script.
Franchise mainstay Malek Akkad, who has been producing Halloween movies since the 2007 reboot but involved since the mid-1990s, is producing alongside Matt Stein. Akkad is the son of original executive producer Moustapha Akkad.
It’s still unclear what role this new Halloween entry will play in deciding the future of the franchise. Dimension obviously understands that some repiloting is in order given how poorly Rob Zombie’s 2007 reboot and 2009 sequel were received by fans,...

Dimension Films hasn’t been able to get a movie out since the second Rob Zombie effort in 2009, but it's not letting Michael Myers and the Halloween franchise die easily. The company has now hired regular Saw writers Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan to lock a script in a small room until it’s willing to work. According to The Hollywood Reporter, nothing has been revealed about what the new film might focus on, but according to the trade mag’s sources this one can’t yet be classified as a remake, reboot or reimagining, but instead as a "recalibration". Can we also suggest reaccreditation and reacquiring? It’s all part of a renewed attempt to pump out another entry after several years of limbo which saw the likes of Patrick Lussier and Todd Farmer developing Halloween 3D to no avail. Now Melton and Dunstan, who wrote four of the...

“When television is good, nothing – not the theater, not the magazines or newspapers – nothing is better. But when television is bad, nothing is worse. I invite each of you to sit down in front of your own television set when your station goes on the air and stay there, for a day, without a book, without a magazine, without a newspaper, without a profit and loss sheet or a rating book to distract you. Keep your eyes glued to that set until the station signs off. I can assure you that what you will observe is a vast wasteland. You will see a procession of game shows, formula comedies about totally unbelievable families, blood and thunder, mayhem, violence, sadism, murder, western bad men, western good men, private eyes, gangsters, more violence, and cartoons. And endlessly commercials – many screaming, cajoling, and offending. And most of all, boredom. True, you’ll see...

It’s rare these days to get a scene on television that genuinely makes the hairs on your neck stand up on end, which really brutally knocks you for six.
We’re used to gore, of course. The rise of cable TV as the go-to medium for bloodthirsty, gripping stories, along with the fall in cost of decent CG effects has seen the amount of nasty body horror on television multiplied by a factor of what-the-hell in recent years.
But genuine, clammy-handed fright fests are few and far between. The old school weird sci fi and horror anthologies like The Twilight Zone, Masters Of Horror, The Outer Limits and Tales From The Crypt were always more concerned with the macabre than the chilling. Those that have stood the test of time without crumbling into cheese were either gruesome, shocking or freaky, relying on a short, sharp shock in the...

Scott Derrickson (Deliver Us From Evil, Sinister) is a busy man. He just signed on to direct "Doctor Strange" for Marvel and has now re-united with his "Sinister" co-writer C Robert Cargill to turn the classic 1960s sci-fi TV series "The Outer Limits" into a movie. "Outer Limits" was an anthology sci-fi and horror show that ran on ABC from 1963 to 1965. Derrickson is a longtime fan of the show, stating that he prefers it over "The Twilight Zone." He and Cargill will focus on one particular episode, "Demon With a Glass Hand," which includes time-travel, alien invasion and genetic manipulation. It focuses on a man with no memory beyond the last 10 days of his life and a computerized hand who discovers he is from the future. The man is being hunted by an alien race who see him as key to their survival, but he soon discovers a more complex and terrifying truth.

It seems the only time I can find that I wrote about a possible big-screen adaptation of The Outer Limits was way back in 2004 when Rupert Wainwright (Stigmata) was attached to direct. Unless I'm missing something I haven't covered it before or since, but today THR brings word the newly crowned director of Marvel's Dr. Strange, Scott Derrickson, has been tapped to write a screenplay for the long gestating feature alongside his Sinister co-writer C. Robert Cargill. "The Outer Limits" was a sci-fi television program that first aired back in the mid-60s and was then remade and aired on Showtime from 1995 to 2002. Here's how the THR story describes the plot: The duo will be tackling time travel, alien invasion and genetic manipulation in adapting the episode, which focused on a man with no memory beyond the last 10 days and a computerized hand who discovers he is from the future.

It's Godzilla month for many of us. Why? A new movie is coming out! And here in Los Angeles, one of the best haunts in town - Creature Features - is holding a Godzilla-themed art show this Sunday (May 11th) from 1pm-5pm. When Creature Features was resurrected in Burbank, it came with some gallery space and that's where this tribute will be held. The venue's last event - which catered to The Outer Limits - was quite a success; you can check out a photo gallery here.

You have to respect the workmanlike filmmakers who keep working in our beloved horror department. Say what you will -- be it kind of critical -- of the films of Adam Gierasch and Jace Anderson. but there's always something to be said for indie-friendly horror freaks who simply keep churning out the movies. (Their better efforts include Autopsy (2008) and their early and underrated remake of The Toolbox Murders from 2004, although Mortuary, Night of the Demons, and Fertile Ground have their fans as well.)
And hey, the latest collaboration between Gierasch (director) and Anderson (co-writer) is a solid little combo of good ol' occult-based horror nastiness and an appreciable dose of downbeat film noir moodiness. While it has a few solid moments of straight scares and impressive gore, Fractured works best as a low-key character piece that feels like a respectful homage to The Outer Limits or Alan Parker's Angel Heart.

Tales From the Darkside was an anthology horror TV series created by George A. Romero back in 1984. I remember watching episodes of this late at night growing up. They were pretty entertaining back then, but you watch them now, and they're silly as hell. The show was similar to programs such as Amazing Stories, The Twilight Zone, Night Gallery, The Outer Limits, and Tales From The Crypt.
According to Vulture, the show is going to be rebooted by Sleepy Hollow producers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, who've also worked on a good amount of movies, such as Star Trek and Transformers. The producing duo will also be teaming up with author Joe Hill (Locke & Key) to help revive the series.

Although cancelled after only 1 seasons its influence on the horror genre particularly SciFi horror was unprecedented with much of the material from its 49 episodes inspiring narratives (or portions of narratives) for hundreds of movies in the 1970s and 1980s. As a creative touchstone for monster and alien stories in particular The Outer Limits is probably the most influential television show in horror movie history and by volume possibly movie history.
