Well, that was tremendously unsatisfying.
In the end, President Allison Taylor doesn't sign the peace agreement with the Islamic Republic that she worked so hard -- and broke several laws -- to create. She's overwhelmed with guilt about the conspiracy she helped cover up against President Hassan. Dalia Hassan found out about the Russians' involvement, and that President Taylor subsequently knew about it. Furious, she had threatened to pull out of the agreement, but President Taylor threatened her with a nuclear strike if she exposed the truth.
After all the lies and former President Charles Logan's plans (he shoots himself, by the way, and for some reason the show didn't entirely kill him off, leaving him ripe for more Jack Bauer torture in a "24" movie), President Taylor can't go through with the treaty under these circumstances. She pulls out.

If you thought Jack crossed a line last week, I can only imagine what you think of him after this hour. Jack's gone stark, raving mad, I think he even surprised himself. Is Jack a psychopath? Has he always been? I've thought before about some of the things Jack has done, either because he had no other choice or because he thought it was the best way to extract information. But in the past, I've always been able to rationalize and work it out to a point where I thought the violence was an acceptable means to an end. After these past couple of hours, I can't do that. Maybe we've just been sensitized with the last few seasons. When I think about the torture used on 24, I think of injections that supposedly cause great pain - but seeing them onscreen doesn't have the same visceral impact as the violence we saw this episode.

Oh my Godtopus, was this the most boring episode yet? I think it must have been, because my brain kept drifting off to a fantasy land. A land where Gregory Itzin was strapping a pair of antlers (what did you think I was going to write?) onto Cherry Jones' head, and harnessing her to a giant sled filled with dead bodies. Also, Cherry might have been wearing a bustier and enjoying Greg's whip snapping. Anyway, Logan was clearly the best part of this episode, what with his successful proselytizing and induction of President Taylor into the Dirty Presidents Club. His sneering and smarmy manner remind me of a certain green fellow, but Itzin is so good at this that I actually hope Logan's heart will stay very, very, very small.

Chloe may have a long history with Jack, but I understood her reticence in tonight's star-filled extravaganza. (A semi-burned Michael Madsen! An extra-chinny D.B. Sweeney!) Still, Jack's always been on the side of good so there's no reason to doubt his motives now, which is why I was thrilled to see her continue working on his behalf -- at least initially. Pretty sneaky of the ole girl, downloading the contents of Sweeney's phone so she'd learn the secret location of torture central (speaking of which, you must read this old but still riveting account by Vanity Fair's Christopher Hitchens, who...

If this truly is the last season of 24, as recent reports indicate, at least the show is going out with a snarl and a bang, courtesy of Michael Madsen.
The actor, who has perfected the role of a bad-ass in movies such as Reservoir Dogs, Thelma & Louise, Kill Bill, will guest star on an episode of the Fox drama this spring.
Madsen has been cast as Jim Ricker, an ex-military character from Jack Bauer’s past. He'll appear near the end of day eight.
