The original Bewitched was a lighthearted sitcom about a supernaturally gifted housewife who could alter reality just by wiggling her nose.
But it sounds like we'll soon be presented with a very different version of Samantha Stephens.
A reboot described as "an irreverent hourlong reimagination" of Bewitched is currently in development by Sony and writer-producer Judalina Neira.
Yes, this is your classic "gritty reboot," and if Neira's work on The Boys is any indication, you can expect it to be quite dark.
Perhaps Samantha will use her powers to become a cocaine kingpin, or maybe every time she wiggles her nose, a random person will die. The possibilities are endless!
According to a new report from Deadline, Neira -- who will be executive producing alongside Doug Robinson and Lauren Moffat -- is helming the show as the first project for both her overall deal with Sony and her new production company,...

The classic sitcom Bewitched ran for eight seasons and a total of 254 episodes, premiering on September 17, 1964 and wrapping up on March 25, 1972. A spin-off called Tabitha came and went in 1977, then Bewitched received a big screen reboot back in 2005… and in recent years, Sony has shown that they’re very eager to reboot the property again. Back in 2018, it was announced that Black-ish creator Kenya Barris and writer Yamara Taylor were working on a TV series reboot that would give the concept “an interracial twist”. That didn’t go anywhere. In 2021, it was reported that Terry Matalas (MacGyver) and Travis Fickett (12 Monkeys) had been hired to write the screenplay for a new Bewitched movie. That never made it into production… and apparently the idea has been abandoned, because now Deadline has learned that writer/producer Judalina Neira has signed an overall deal with Sony Pictures Television that’s focused on developing...

Exclusive: Jeff Frost, a 15-year Sony TV veteran, is stepping down as President of Sony Pictures Television Studios, a post he has held for the past five years. According to sources, his departure was a mutual decision. With the TV studio coming off a banner year — hitting an all-time high of over 50 produced series and making waves at the 2021 Emmy nominations — I hear Frost felt it was time to leave and start a new chapter. Frost just shared his decision with his staff; Ravi Ahuja, Chairman, Global Television Studios, announced Frost’s departure in a company email. (You can read both in full at the bottom of the post.)
There is no immediate replacement for Frost. I hear a search is in very early stages, and the studio has held exploratory conversations with a handful of seasoned TV executives. Frost will stay on through September to help with the transition.

“For Life” could soon be returning to life on IMDb TV.
According to sources, the up and coming streamer is poised to order a third season of the legal drama, which was canceled by ABC after two seasons back in May. The news comes just as IMDb TV has announced that it has struck a deal to stream Seasons 1 and 2 of the series on its ad-supported platform.
Series executive producer Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson was said to be instrumental in reviving the series, working with top leadership at Disney, like Hulu-ABC chief Craig Erwich, to find the show a new home. “For Life” was not a linear ratings breakout during its time on ABC but has been said to have performed very well in streaming playback on platforms like Hulu. The existing two seasons of For Life, which was canceled by ABC last month, are now available on IMDb TV, Amazon’s free streaming service. Additionally, I hear Sony Pictures Television, the studio behind the praised drama, has extended the options on the cast, originally set to expire tomorrow, until the end of July.
I hear the agreement with IMDb TV is for a limited, monthlong run. The streamer and Sony TV are expected to evaluate the series’ performance at the end of July. Based on how it does, For Life, starring Nicholas Pinnock, could potentially get an order for a third season as an IMDb TV original, sources said.

Last year, a renewal decision came down to the wire on legal drama For Life, which was the last ABC to snag a pickup in June, at the height of the protests following the death of George Floyd.
There was no last-minute reprieve for the show this time, with ABC on Friday canceling it after two seasons. Sony Pictures TV, which co-produces For Life with ABC Signature, is expected to shop the series to other buyers including Hulu, where For Life, starring Nicholas Pinnock, has done well.
For Life, from creator/executive producer Hank Steinberg and executive producer Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, has proven timely with its exploration of racial inequality in the justice system. The show delivered on that by becoming one of the first scripted series to go into production during the pandemic in early fall despite its Season 2 order being originally for midseason. “For Life” has been renewed for a second season at ABC, Variety has learned, while “The Baker and the Beauty” has been canceled after one season.
Inspired by the life of Isaac Wright Jr., “For Life” is a fictional serialized drama about an imprisoned man, Aaron Wallace (Nicholas Pinnock), who becomes a lawyer litigating cases for other inmates while fighting to overturn his own life sentence for a crime he didn’t commit.
“It has been a profound honor working with Isaac Wright, Jr. and Curtis ’50 Cent’ Jackson to create a show that, through the prism of Isaac’s experience in our broken criminal justice system, has been able to highlight the racial inequality that plagues this country,” said series creator Hank Steinberg. “The show’s renewal will allow us to continue to do that and I am extremely grateful to Sony Pictures Television and ABC for all of their support.

In a conversation with reporters following today’s TCA panel on NBC’s new comedy Indebted, series star Fran Drescher did not specifically confirm or deny that she is at work on a TV revival of The Nanny but said she “contractually” cannot proceed on any plan to revive her 1990s sitcom until after character goes to Broadway.
“[The Broadway musical] is the next big Nanny thing, so I have to honor that commitment,” Drescher said. She added that she wants to write another book after the Broadway chapter is over.
As previously announced, the 1990s sitcom is being developed into a Broadway musical, with series creators Drescher and her ex-husband Peter Marc Jacobson set to write the show’s book, while Crazy Ex-Girlfriend‘s Rachel Bloom and Adam Schlesinger writing the music.
For now, Drescher fans will have to be content with seeing her in Indebted, from writer Dan Levy, Sony TV and Doug Robinson Productions.

“Schooled” is changing showrunners again. ABC gave the sophomore “Goldbergs” spinoff series a back-nine order Tuesday, and announced that Tom Hertz (“Rules of Engagement”)and Vanessa McCarthy (“Modern Family”) will be showrunners for the rest of Season 2.
They replace “The Kids Are Alright” creator Tim Doyle, who helmed the first 13 episodes of Season 2 and left due to creative differences, according to a person close to production. Before Doyle, co-creator Marc Firek was the showrunner for Season 1.
“We’re incredibly proud of ‘Schooled’ and are thrilled to order a full season of this sharp, fresh and funny comedy that has proven to be a consistently strong pairing with its ‘Goldbergs’ lead-in,” said Karey Burke, president of ABC Entertainment. “We’re so grateful to the show’s top-notch cast and crew, and we’re looking forward to bringing more hilarious stories about the teachers and students at William Penn Academy to our viewers.

“Schooled” has received a back nine order for its second season at ABC. In addition, showrunner Tim Doyle has departed the series.
Series co-executive producers Tom Hertz and Vanessa McCarthy will take over for Doyle. Season 2 of the show will now run for 22 episodes compared to the 13-episode first season. The first season of the show launched at midseason, while Season 2 debuted this fall.
This marks the second showrunner change for the “Goldbergs” spinoff this year, with Doyle having taken over from Season 1 showrunner and series co-creator Marc Firek in August. Doyle, who remains under an overall deal at ABC Studios, previously created the ABC comedy “The Kids Are Alright.” That show aired for one season and was based on Doyle’s own childhood growing up in a large Irish-Catholic family.
Hertz previously worked with Doyle on “The Kids Are Alright.” He also created the CBS comedy “Rules of Engagement.

In this golden age of TV reboots, we’ll have to wait a bit for The Nanny to return.
Deadline caught up with Fran Drescher at our Hyundai Tribeca Film Festival studio where she was promoting her new movie Safe Spaces which makes its world premiere tonight at 7:30Pm at the Village East Cinema. The Nanny co-creator and star told us that she still has ideas for a comeback of The Nanny, but it’s still early. At the top of Drescher’s dance card right now is the NBC multi-camera comedy Uninsured in which she stars.
While Drescher couldn’t get into details on whether the next rendition of The Nanny would be for the stage or TV, she hinted that a series reboot could entail a younger cast. Drescher landed two Golden Globe noms and two Primetime Emmy noms in the lead actress comedy categories for The Nanny.

NBC has handed a pilot order to Uninsured, a multi-camera comedy from The Goldbergs writer/co-executive producer Dan Levy, executive producer Doug Robinson and Sony Pictures TV where Robinson and his Doug Robinson Productions are based.
Uninsured was sold, written and delivered as single-camera. NBC has ordered it as a multi-camera pilot, and the script will be converted to fit the new format. Uninsured joins two other comedy pilots at NBC — both single-camera — Saving Kenan starring SNL’s Kenan Thompson and Like Magic.
Written by Levy, Uninsured centers around young parents Dave and Rebecca who end up having to take care of Dave’s parents who have mishandled their finances and need help to pay down a sizable debt.
The project is expected to touch upon social issues as the title refers to the fact that the family has no insurance.
Levy executive produces with Robinson and Alison Greenspan via Robinson’s Doug Robinson Productions.

ABC’s recent tradition of family-friendly half-hours continues with “Schooled,” a half-hour spinoff of period comedy “The Goldbergs” that moves character Lainey Lewis (Aj Michalka) into adulthood, where she’s returning to her high school to teach music to a group of jaded ‘90s kids. The show’s action transpires, coincidentally or not, during a golden era for sitcoms that tweens, teens, and parents could watch together, one in which ABC broadcast shows including “Step by Step” and “Sabrina the Teenage Witch”. Given its setting and its premise, so simple as to be a throwback, it’d seem like “Schooled” is set up for, if not greatness, than at least amiable, “Hanging With Mr. Cooper”-style competence.
But for all the references to late-20th-century culture crammed into the first installment—the pilot’s plot hinges, at different points, on a bottle of much-pilloried malt cooler Zima and on Phil Donahue...

No surprise here: ABC’s new comedy series Schooled, a spinoff of the network’s hit The Goldbergs, will follow the mothership series on the schedule. Schooled will premiere January 9 and will air Wednesdays at 8:30 Pm behind The Goldbergs.
Schooled‘s arrival will displace comedy American Housewife, which currently airs in the Wednesdays 8:30 Pm time period. Beginning February 5, the family comedy starring Katy Mixon will relocate to the Tuesday 8 Pm anchor slot, which will became vacant after The Conners wraps its 11-episode run.
ABC’s scheduling of The Goldbergs and Schooled mirrors that of CBS’ back-to-back slotting of The Big Bang Theory and spinoff Young Sheldon, which has worked well.
This marks a return to Tuesdays and fourth time slot in 2.5 seasons for American Housewife, which started in the Tuesday 8:30 Pm berth before moving to Wednesday 9:30 Pm and then 8:30 Pm. In conjunction to the latest move,...
