I've done this exercise before, and some of the same films made the list this time, but not all. America in 2016 is different than the America of 2002, and that's part of what I love about this country. And make no mistake... I love this country. I believe America is a nation defined by contradictions. I am both cynical and idealistic about it, and I love it precisely because of the ways it breaks my heart. I am fully aware that one can only exist because of the other. With that in mind, here are ten films that, taken together, define the state of our union in the year 2016. The Right Stuff Philip Kaufman’s movie celebrating the accomplishments of the Mercury Seven astronauts is more than just a celebration of the pioneer spirit. The film is a gorgeous dream, a poem about heroism and celebrity and ego and optimism. The...

Human beings and their affectionate vibes are something special. After all, we as individuals are going to love who we feel are worth loving. However, society demands that the protocol of loving should be straight-forward and “natural”. The rule of thumb: stick to your own kind! Whether it is being loyal to your own kind racially or culturally or either with your own age range the expectation of romance is defined…do not make waves and keep things safe and mainstream!
Well, human beings can be also unpredictable and live for going against the grain especially certain characters and personalities in the movies. Love and romance make for great film fodder but when the notion of such on-screen amorous activities takes its theme to a whole new challenging level then the gloves are off!

We hit the highway in pursuit of the best film clips involving motorised vehicles leaving the scene
This week's Clip joint is by Cj regular Woof73. Think you can do better? Email your idea for a future Clip joint to adam.boult@guardian.co.uk
Since this is a Clip joint about endings, it's probably safe to say: here there be spoilers.
Someone always leaves at the end of the film. They turn, deliver a devastating line or kiss, and they're on their way. Either that, or everyone else is dead. This is when most films roll the credits – but sometimes, you want more. After all, we invest a lot of time in our heroes. Whether it is single-handedly wiping out a gang of European terrorists or spontaneously bursting into song during a storm, they've been through a lot, and we've been right there with them. It would be nice...

While in rehearsals at the Brooklyn Academy of Music for Rufus Wainwright's "Prima Donna," Jess Brown was preparing to audition for the role of Elaine Robinson in a production of "The Graduate" at the Ivoryton Playhouse in Ivoryton, Conn. After seeing the casting notice for the show in Back Stage, Brown began her research on the character, the daughter of the infamous Mrs. Robinson. "After reading the play in its entirety, I decided to do something rather questionable -- I watched the movie," she says. "Although this is known to be a major faux pas among actors, I felt justified in my actions because the play was primarily based on the original film, starring Dustin Hoffman and Katharine Ross. Knowing this, I felt that to be cast, I would need to exemplify certain qualities of the original Elaine while still making it my own."On arriving at the audition,...

Kelly Overton‘s Gluteus Maximus Muscle in Tekken (2010) is always on display. Kelly Overton and her gluteus Maximus Tekken outfits, in some circles, could earn costume designer Shawn Holly Cookson an award of some kind (probably Spike TV’s Guys Choice Awards) for trying to sell the film in such a salacious and audacious way. Nothing can save Tekken from being the mediocre (a kindness) fight film that it is though but Kelly Overton and her gluteus maximus muscle do try.
We reviewed it and the rest of the film here: Film Review: Tekken (2010). For your edification: The original Mortal Kombat movie is better than Tekken. Mortal Kombat: Legacy completely blows it away. Jean-Claude Van Damme‘s Street Fighter is better than Tekken. S.T.R.E.E.T. F.I.G.H.T.E.R.! Below is the best ass-pect of Dwight H. Little‘s Tekken.

Watching The Graduate (Mike Nichols, 1967) is an experience that is uplifting and depressing at the same time. Uplifting because the film marries a stimulating aesthetic and a good story so effortlessly. It is a true crowd-pleaser, because it can be simply enjoyed as a comedy-drama or engaged with and understood in more complex ways if you choose: either approach works well. Watching such a film is depressing only because it reminds you how rare it is for a film to truly make you sit up and pay attention, let alone stand up and cheer.
The Graduate grabs the audience and draws them in from the very first moment. The film’s protagonist, Benjamin (Dustin Hoffman), acts as an anchor in the strongly composed opening shots, setting the tone for the rest of the film. While Benjamin stares straight ahead, lost in thought, his self-absorption is balanced and enhanced by the shots’ mobility,...

In honor of Mother's Day, we've compiled a list of our top 10 favorite fictional TV moms. When we watched them, we knew they were fictional ... yet that didn't stop us from wishing they were our own moms -- or vowing to follow in their mom-footsteps someday.
Did your favorite TV mom make the list?
Most Memorable TV MomsJune Cleaver in "Leave It to Beaver" (1957 - 1963)
Barbara Billingsley's role as a loving wife and mother in the feel-good sitcom wasn't full of risk or realism. June Cleaver, however, always looked polished and amazing, and certainly loved her husband and children. You may be surprised to learn that ...

Carol Brady in "The Brady Bunch" (1969 - 1974)

That ringing you hear in your ears right now -- that's the nifty spoiler alert we have here at MTV. And it's sounding because Sir Michael Caine has gone ahead and cleared up any ambiguity there is about the ending of this summer's best and most mind-melting movie, "Inception."
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Caine -- who the plays dream-world inventor and Leonard DiCaprio's father-in-law/mentor in the film -- recently divulged all in an interview with BBC Radio. "[The spinning top] drops at the end, that's when I come back on," he says. "If I'm there it's real, because I'm never in the dream. I'm the guy who invented the dream." In other words, since the spinning top -- which would keep spinning if it's a dream and fall if it's not -- drops, DiCaprio's Dom Cobb does get his happy ending, and not in a dirty massage-parlor kind of way; he...

Mike Nichols' film of "The Graduate," based on the novel by Charles Richard Webb, has influenced and inspired countless works in the 43 years since its release. The two scenes most often imitated are of course the seduction and the ending, which still has fans debating what happens next with Ben Braddock (Dustin Hoffman) and Elaine Robinson (Katherine Ross) after the film fades to black. Most of us would rather there not be a sequel that tells us if the couple sticks together following their insane dash from the church where Elaine was supposed to be married, or if their…...

The latest Twilight film has hit theatres and I can do like every movie blog has done for the last three years running and make fun of the ridiculous vampire themes and werewolves or I can look at the real center piece of the film, the romance. With that I want to give everyone a look at my Top Ten Taboo Relationships in Film:
Special Mention: The Girlfriend Experience (2009) (dir. Steven Soderbergh)
When dating a prostitute you know there’re some taboos that you’re going to be dealing with. It’s not even a secret in the relationship that she goes out at night and has sex with other men. That alone will give a man more than enough trust issues to fill a therapist’s weekly schedule. I kindly skirted this film out of the Top Ten only for the reason that we never have any other characters...

"We have no need of comfy chairs."
Picking up where we left off last week for the first official cliffhanger of Doctor Who's eleventh incarnation, Amy, River, the clerics, and the Doctor find themselves standing upside down on the underside of the Byzantium's hull. The exploding gravity globe created enough of an updraft for their jump to reach the ship, which still had its artificial gravity in effect. Below - or above from their perspective - wait the Weeping Angels, whose features are becoming more defined as they ingest the power from the Byzantium's leaking radiation.
The Doctor uses the trusty sonic screwdriver to gain access to the interior of the ship. The ship's interior gravity orients them to the floor, but they are immediately trapped inside the corridor. Outside, the Weeping Angels are also able to jump up to the ship, break open the hatch, and enter the...
