- American-born, of German-Jewish background. He was brought up in Germany and studied medicine at the University of Munich. Practised as a doctor, before entering films in 1914 as writer/director. Best known for the nightmarish Warning Shadows (1923), an early masterpiece of German expressionist cinema.

For his next movie "Nächte des Grauens" (1916) he was not only responsible as a screenwriter but he was also the director of it. It followed a longer interruption before he continued his film career in the 20s.
