In the 1960s, there were few cameramen who shared Nicolas Roeg’s ability to render sirenic, jittery sensuality at 24 frames per second—and this was an era whose dominant culture arguably cracked open and redefined the sensual palate. Even more impressively, Roeg’s gift often manifested itself most lucidly while serving the orgiastic gimmicks of Roger Corman’s The Masque of the Red Mask and the bucolic splendor of John Schlesinger’s Far from the Madding Crowd with the guarded glee of a merry prankster spiking a corporate water cooler with LSD.
But it’s not just that Roeg successfully snuck timely art into the mise-en-scène of those and other studio-centric films, it’s that he seemed incapable of recording anything but subtle art within whatever limitations his aspect ratio enforced. And so while Walkabout may have been his proper directorial debut, it’s far more significantly his final cinematographic statement.

Exclusive: The BBC has acquired broadcast rights to the British indie drama Kindling from debut feature filmmaker Connor O’Hara, which played in Competition at the 2023 Shanghai International Film Festival.
Written and directed by O’Hara, the pic was the first British film to screen at Shanghai in six years. The BBC’s license on the pic begins in November and lasts three years. Signature Entertainment released the film in the UK and Ireland and brokered the deal with the BBC. However, first contact was made with the broadcaster by Jamie Gamache, who produced the pic alongside Mark Foligno and first approached BBC buyer Simon Chilcott with the project.
“It’s sometimes quite clear what the BBC is after, and Kindling definitely felt like it,” Gamache told Deadline.

Si Litvinoff, the visionary producer behind Stanley Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange and the Nicolas Roeg-directed films The Man Who Fell to Earth and the Australian New Wave classic Walkabout, has died. He was 93.
Litvinoff died peacefully Dec. 26 in Los Angeles, his friend Shade Rupe announced. Rupe interviewed him for the Blu-ray release of Litvinoff’s groundbreaking 1968 film The Queen, which revolves around a national drag queen contest.
Litvinoff also produced the London-set All the Right Noises (1970), starring Olivia Hussey, Tom Bell and Judy Carne, and executive produced a Roeg-directed documentary about the 1972 Glastonbury Fayre music festival that featured performances by Traffic, Fairport Convention, Melanie and Arthur Brown.
In 1965, Litvinoff optioned Anthony Burgess’ 1962 novel A Clockwork Orange for a reported 500 and sent the book to Kubrick. While paying for screenplays by Burgess, Terry Southern and Michael Cooper, the producer sought Mick Jagger to star in it, all while Kubrick...

Independent Entertainment, the finance, sales and production company behind films including “We Need to Talk About Kevin” and the upcoming “My Policeman,” which is set to have its world premiere at TIFF, celebrates its fifteenth anniversary this year.
Since its founding by CEO Luc Roeg in 2007, the film landscape has undergone unimaginable change, from the ascendance of streaming platforms to the global pandemic followed by a cost of living crisis that has brought cinemas to their knees.
Despite the challenges, Independent Entertainment has gone from strength to strength, adapting to market changes while remaining true to what Roeg describes as its “creative core.”
“Every decision is made around the creative basis and how the team or individuals are responding to it,” Roeg tells Variety of the company’s strategy. “I think we are very much a production-led business in the sense that whenever we get involved, even in third party projects,...

Looking better than ever thanks to an excellent 4k scan and restoration, Walkabout is a film which no serious cinephile would want to have missing from their collection. It's supported here by a full suite of extras, most of which are themselves impressive and far easier to get lost in than most of their ilk. Don't start unless you have a few hours to spare.
First up is the commentary by Luc Roeg and David Thompson, which goes into depth about the experience of making the film as well as looking at its literary origins, the production process and aspects of its reception. Luc, who starred, was very young at the time so can't always lead on the provision of facts, but what he does remember is far richer in its way, focused on the human aspects of the process and the physical and psychological challenges involved, as well as on.

Returning to Karlovy Vary Intl. Film Festival, where his documentary short “Views of a Retired Night Porter” was awarded in 2006, Austrian helmer Andreas Horvath decided to focus on his fiction feature debut “Lillian” when addressing the participants of European Film Promotion’s Future Frames during an exclusive masterclass. The showcase, now in its seventh edition, presents 10 young directors from Europe and their latest work, selected by the artistic team of Kviff.
Inspired by the true story of Lillian Alling, a Russian woman in New York who decided to walk back to her homeland in the 1920s, the film was borne out of Horvath’s restlessness.
“I was at a film festival in Montreal and decided to go to Toronto. I often do that – I don’t necessarily watch all the films but go to museums, explore the city. My friends had a guest and he told me about her,” he said.

"It was just an amazing opportunity that we were all given." Second Sight Films has debuted an official re-release trailer for the new "Limited Edition" UK Blu-ray of the seminal Australian classic Walkabout, first released in 1971. This film originally premiered at the Cannes Film Festival back in 1971, but didn't win any awards then. It has since gone on to earn critical acclaim and be heralded as one of the defining films in Australian cinema, and one of the first to highlight the Aboriginal experience in a transcendent way. Jenny Agutter and Luc Roeg star as two city-bred siblings are stranded in the Australian Outback, where they learn to survive with the aid of an Aboriginal boy on his "walkabout": a ritual separation from his tribe. Exclusive: Vertical Entertainment has acquired North American rights to Archive, the sci-fi pic starring Theo James that was to have its world premiere at SXSW before the festival was shuttered due to the coronavirus lockdown. Gavin Rothery wrote and directed the film, which Vertical said Wednesday it is aiming for a July 10 day-and-date release in theaters.
The film is set in 2038, where George Almore (James) is working on a true human-equivalent AI. His latest prototype is almost ready. This sensitive phase is also the riskiest. Especially as he has a goal that must be hidden at all costs: being reunited with his dead wife. Stacy Martin (Vox Lux) co-stars, with the cast including Rhona Mitra and Toby Jones.
London-based production and sales outfit Independent produced the film, with Philip Herd and Cora Palfrey producers along with James. Executive producers are Luc Roeg, Sarah Lebutsch, James Atherton, Jan Pace, Norman Merry,...

Travelling 10,000 miles – from Australia to Morocco – may sound like a long trek just to receive a tribute, but that was the distance travelled by most of the members of Australia’s 22-person delegation of actors, directors and producers to attend the Marrakech Film Festival’s country tribute.
Notwithstanding the radical differences between Morocco and Australia, both countries share something in common, which has captured the imagination of filmmakers since the birth of the medium – the desert.
For this year’s festival poster the Marrakech Film Festival Foundation pondered depicting the two deserts of Morocco and Australia side by side, but ultimately opted for a simple warm orange glow.
Australia has been a structuring element of the fest’s 18th edition – Australian actor Naomi Watts officially opened the festival and British actor Tilda Swinton, this year’s jury president, has a direct family link to the country, since her mother was born in New South Wales.

The 1970s were the heyday of what was still known, with Victorian understatement, as the love scene: those writhing arenas of nude intimacy, which moviegoers experienced with a touch of voyeuristic awe, to the point that the scenes were talked about for years, or even decades. And except for the clashing close encounters in “Last Tango in Paris,” no love scene of the ’70s was as celebrated, as talked about, or as swooned over as the one that appeared a year later in “Don’t Look Now,” the splendidly creepy 1973 chiller that’s arguably the greatest movie directed by Nicolas Roeg, who died Friday at 90.
The film’s two stars, Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie, were both considered deliriously sexy at the time, though if you watch the movie today they look more or less like what they were playing — a handsome but ordinary middle-class couple still reeling in grief...

Idiosyncratic film director Nicolas Roeg, whose odd but compelling films included Performance and The Man Who Fell To Earth, has died. He passed away on Friday night of undisclosed causes at age 90, according to his son.
Roeg’s work, which was often opaque and non-traditional, influenced a generation of filmmakers, but wasn’t widely accepted at first. Performance was almost not released, and later re-cut by Warner Bros., whose executives found it almost incomprehensible. It is now considered a classic, decades later.
Before directing, Roeg had built a solid reputation as a cinematographer, winning acclaim for his work on Far From The Madding Crowd and Fahrenheit 451, among others.
But it was his work on Performance that caused a stir. Co-directed with Donald Cammell, its non-linear narrative and dark tones recalled such auteurs as Jean-Luc Godard and Richard Lester. It became a signature piece, leading to such stylized and arty...

“There’s much we can’t see, detect or comprehend, yet we spend our lives trying to get to the heart of this dark energy.” That’s the chilling threat at the start of the first clip (above) for Carol Morley’s Patricia Clarkson-fronted neo-noir detective drama Out of Blue.
The film, which is based on Martin Amis’ novel, plays in the Platform section of Tiff and premieres on Friday September 7 at 9:30pm in the Winter Garden Theater.
Clarkson plays Mike Hoolihan in the neo-noir metaphysical mystery. She’s a homicide detective called to investigate the shooting of leading astrophysicist and black hole expert, Jennifer Rockwell. But once on the case, she’s affected in ways she struggles to comprehend.
Jacki Weaver, James Caan, Toby Jones, Aaron Tveit, Mamie Gummer, Jonathan Majors and Devyn A Tyler also star in the crime drama from the helmer of The Falling.

With a terrain so vast that we're only familiar with a fraction of what might be out there, you never know what might come hurtling through the stars, and director Brandon Cronenberg is looking to tap into that terror with Dragon, a new sci-fi thriller that is in development as his second feature film.
Variety reports that Brandon (son of legendary director David Cronenberg) is working with Dan Abnett to write the screenplay of Dragon, which will follow the crew of a spaceship on the hunt for colossal creatures known as "dragons" among the stars, with the intentions of gathering their organic matter, selling it for a steep price to people who turn it into drugs, and living happily ever after with a big paycheck.

Russell Crowe is set to star in the epic drama "In Sand and Blood" for Im Global.
Ronan Bennett wrote the script which is apparently based on Dean King's nonfiction book "Skeletons on the Zahara: A True Story of Survival." That story follows Captain James Riley, the captain of an American ship which was wrecked on the Western Sahara coast in 1815.
The few survivors were captured and sold into slavery for various owners until Riley convinced an Arab trader he would receive a far greater ransom from a European consul in a Moroccan port a thousand miles to the north - beginning a trek across the scorching desert.
It is unclear if Crowe will direct the project and reps have reportedly dodged multiple inquiries about the film. Luc Roeg will produce the film which Crowe teased in a tweet last week:

Variety reports that Russell Crowe is set to star in the historical drama In Sand and Blood. The movie, backed by Im Global, takes place in 19th century Africa and echoes historian Dean King's Skeletons on the Zahara: A True Story of Survival. King's work seemingly retells the true story of Captain James Riley, who penned a memoir in the early 1800s after he and his crew — who'd been shipwrecked off the coast of the western Sahara — were captured and enslaved, and then ultimately resold to (read: saved by) Europeans. Ronan Bennett reportedly is writing the script and Luc Roeg is producing; other personnel and logistical details are unavailable at the moment. But ever the worker, Crowe's already getting into the role: Hopefully, he'll produce a new one of these.

On Sunday evening, the 58th BFI London Film Festival announced this year’s Festival Awards winners. Top honors went to Andrey Zvyagintsev’s “Leviathan,” Russia’s Best Foreign Language Film submission. After naming “Leviathan” with Lff’s Best Film award, Jeremy Thomas, BFI Fellow and President of the Official Competition jury said: ”We were all very engaged by the 12 films selected for Competition and really admired many of them, there were extraordinary stories and impressive images.
