He was awarded the OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) in 1977 for his services to the film industry.
He was a great admirer of Max Miller, whose risque routines were legendary so he saw the Carry on films as an extension of the music hall.
He was responsible for the secondary Carry on titles such as 'Mind My Chopper' (Henry) and 'Womb at the Top' (Matron).
