Once taught dancing in Laguna Beach with his brother Donald Granville
Herring.
One of his most popular song hits was "It's a Big, Wide, Wonderful
World." He also wrote the novelty song "I Want a Hippopotamus for
Christmas."
He was instrumental in helping to put together wife Alice Pearce's nightclub
acts for such venues as the Blue Angel in New York during the 40s. They
had no children.
Graduated from Drake College.
His brother Robert Eugene Herring was an opera singer.
Many of John's songs were recorded by America's beloved artists. "Pig,
Pig" was recorded by Burl Ives and "Riding Down the Canyon" was covered
by Gene Autry. Others were used in Broadway musicals.
