Production of “The Correspondent” wrapped in Sydney, Australia after being directed by Kriv Stenders, who enjoyed major success in Australia with “Red Dog” and also directed hit “Danger Close: The Battle of Long Tan.”

France’s Canal+ Group said that it has increased its stake in multi-territory Asian streaming platform Viu to 30%.
“This additional investment underlines the confidence that Canal+ has in Viu and its teams. It also highlights the determination of Canal+ to make Asia its next growth vector, through its strategic partnership with Pccw, and through an acceleration of growth at Viu, a premium streaming service present in Asia, the Middle East and South Asfrica,” the French group said in a statement. Additionally, it said that its investment in Viu now amounted to some $300 million and that it retains an option to increase its stake to 50%.
In June last year, Canal+ announced that it was to pay $200 million for an initial 26.1% stake in Viu and that it would make a total staggered investment of $300 million.
In results published on Friday, Pccw said: “Viu saw 27% growth in revenue in2023 […] propelled...

Vampires have been part of the popular imagination for centuries. The macabre folklore came from supposedly real reports of blood-sucking corpses attacking the people of small Serbian villages in the early 18th Century. Later historians, philosophers and scientists have explained the phenomenon in hindsight as paranoia and ignorance of medical notions accepted today. Meanwhile, literature and other forms of art have eternalized the mythical creature as a staple of the horror genre.
Bram Stoker wasn't the first writer to explore the concept, but the characters introduced in his 1897 horror novel Dracula have made such an impact they're still around. At the same time, the best-known vampire movies inspired by the book have only highlighted specific aspects and to varying degrees of accuracy. Horrors like Tod Browning's Dracula were loosely based on it, while comedy movies like the animation Hotel Transylvania only took certain elements.

Based on Jane Harper’s bestseller, this twisty mystery follows Falk as he investigates a dodgy CEO (Richard Roxburgh) and his missing employee (Anna Torv)

The first and perhaps most obvious point to make about Robert Connolly’s sequel to his popular and finely made mystery-thriller The Dry is that it’s not dry at all – it’s very, very wet. The director, again adapting a bestselling novel by Jane Harper, opens with shots of lush wilderness – the film is largely based in the Victorian mountain ranges – and rain-covered leaves.
The first time we see Eric Bana, back again as federal police agent Aaron Falk, he’s doing laps in a swimming pool. His fellow agent, Carmen Cooper (Jacqueline McKenzie), is anxious to solve their latest case – a missing person’s investigation – as flooding might soon hit the region. It is police informant...

War movies are subjected to deep analysis by military experts, veterans, and historians for their accuracy. The most realistic war movies receive praise from historians and military experts. Accuracy in war movies can vary between historical accuracy and military accuracy, with success in one often meaning failure in the other.
Although war movies take most of their elements from real life, some of them are more accurate than others, but thanks to the insight of military experts the most realistic war movies are easy to pinpoint. War movies, no matter which specific conflict they cover, address delicate and well documented topics. Whether it's a film set in World War 2 or Ancient Greece, war movies are subjected to deep analysis by military experts, veterans, and historians, perhaps more than any other genre in the film industry.

Hollywood has often turned to the fantasy genre to tell some of the greatest stories ever put to film. From epic, high fantasy to grounded adventure in unique worlds, the genre has racked up an impressive number of awards, solid prestige and a dedicated fan base. Often turning to novels and mythology, the fantasy genre is the highest, purest form of escapism there is, telling stories detached from the real world and populated with magic, elves, monsters and more.
Fantasy movies such as Lord of the Rings have entrenched their status as genuine classics and masterpieces not in need of a remake or reboot. However, there are certainly examples of fantasy films that deserve another look, whether due to a poor execution, stories left unfinished or unrealized full potential. The fantasy genre is full of films that would make for excellent new franchises, and they're just waiting for studios and...

For decades, the idea of the "chosen one" has been a popular trope in fiction, telling the story of characters who are unwitting subjects of prophecies. These films focus on ideas of fate and destiny, building towards long-awaited realizations of the characters' full potential, both for better and worse. While some characters embrace their supernatural roles, others have their stories defined through trying to avoid them at all costs.
The idea of the chosen one continues to be popular in fiction, especially thanks to how it can elevate seemingly ordinary characters into great heroes, sending them on fantastical adventures. These stories often take the shape of tales of responsibility, and have been a classic vehicle for the hero's journey. The chosen one trope continues to entertain fans across mediums and genres and, despite often being supernatural in nature, can lead to relatable character development.

Some of the best lawyer shows on TV have dedicated significant time and effort to accurately portraying the legal profession, while others prioritize entertainment. Lawyer TV shows have been a part of television history for decades, with iconic series like Perry Mason and Matlock paving the way for the genre's popularity. While there are many lawyer shows to choose from across various networks and streaming services, not all live up to the standards set by their predecessors.
With so many in-depth legal dramas on TV these days, any long-time viewer could end up feeling like a lawyer themselves after binge-watching some of the best lawyer shows. Some legal dramas spend less time than others on the law aspect, whereas others have clearly spent months researching and working with real-life defense attorneys. "Fans of The Lincoln Lawyer will find other shows like Bosch and Better Call Saul, with complex protagonists and quirky atmospheres, to be captivating legal dramas." "Rake and Damages embrace the seedy elements of defense lawyers, offering dark humor mixed with thrilling courtroom scenes that will keep viewers entertained." "The Good Fight and How to Get Away with Murder not only provide the usual thrills of a legal series, but also address pressing social and cultural issues, making them compelling choices for fans of The Lincoln Lawyer."
After becoming a huge hit for Netflix, people will be looking for more shows like The Lincoln Lawyer. The legal drama is based on the novel by Michael Connolly which was also made into the Matthew McConaughey film of the same name. It manages to bring something new to the well-established genre, particularly through its quirky atmosphere and the skilled performances of its cast.

The Universal Classic Monsters have formed the foundation of horror with iconic characters like Frankenstein's Monster, The Wolf Man and, of course, Dracula. Universal Pictures has continued to capitalize on these characters with retellings of their classic stories like 2020's The Invisible Man or the horror comedy Renfield. But the studio has also shown that Dracula can be interpreted in many different ways, including the bloodsucking monster that the original Bram Stoker novel introduced. The Last Voyage of the Demeter has offered a modern look at this monstrous version of the character, but it was far from the only one.

The Baz Luhrmann Elvis cast is a diverse group of talent, new and old, playing the real-life icons from the era of The King. Luhrmann is the director of such stylistic hits as Romeo + Juliet, Moulin Rouge!, Australia, and The Great Gatsby, known for his vibrant, kinetic visuals and a keen focus on music. The Moulin Rouge! soundtrack offers a wide variety of needle drops spanning multiple genres. The sheer variety of songs on the album is understood given that almost every Baz Luhrmann movie brims with a lively musical energy. Starring Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman, this jukebox musical revolves around the forbidden love affair between a poet and a cabaret dancer in Paris in 1899. The title alludes to the legendary theater, which sets the stage for song-and-dance numbers visualized on vibrant medleys. Meanwhile, the two central protagonists also get to indulge in their own romantic duets.
What’s notable about the Moulin Rouge! soundtrack is how it blends its period setting with modern songs. Even though Paris was in the nascent stages of industrialization in the year that the movie is set in, the characters perform both original compositions and covers of songs by Nirvana, David Bowie, Madonna, Fatboy Slim, U2, Nat King Cole,...

Baz Luhrmann isn’t a fan of sci-fi, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t interested in giving his signature spin on the genre.
The “Elvis” auteur revealed that he is eyeing science fiction films as his next venture.
“It’s not that I don’t like fantasy — it’s just [that] other people have already done it, and they’ve done it really well,” Luhrmann told People magazine. “They’ve got their own language. I’ve kind of found myself in the world of the musical and post-modern melodrama and a particular wavering story.”
He added, “Having said that, as I’ve gotten older, I’m thinking, ‘What would I do with science fiction?’ So I wouldn’t count it out.”
Luhrmann quipped his next project could very well be “Robots the Musical!” The director has directed six films over 30 years, with “Romeo + Juliet” and “Moulin Rouge!” among his career-defining features.

ITV in the U.K. has acquired “Bali 2002,” a new four-part drama exploring the everyday heroes directly impacted by the terrorist bombings on the Indonesian island’s tourist hotspots 20 years ago. Represented by Banijay Rights, the drama stars Rachel Griffiths (“Total Control”), Richard Roxburgh (“Rake”) and Claudia Jesse (“Bridgerton”). It will air on the new streaming service Itvx next year.
“Bali 2002” was co-produced by Banijay labels, Endemol Shine Australia and Screentime, and marked the first original drama co-commissioned by the Australian streamer Stan and commercial TV group 9Network. The series premiered last month on Stan.
“Bali 2002” recounts the tragic events of October 12, 2002, when the island was shattered by a terrorist attack on two of Kuta Beach’s busiest nightclubs. Local Balinese, as well as Australian and British tourists, scrambled to rescue the injured, while the Australian and Indonesian authorities mobilized to evacuate survivors, identify victims and investigate what really took place.

The King is back. After rocking the box office since earlier this summer — and earning a reported 141 million so far — Elvis, Baz Luhrmann’s epic telling of the rock & roll legend, has finally hit streaming services.
The film stars Austin Butler as the titular character, with Tom Hanks playing Presley’s manager Colonel Tom Parker, and Olivia DeJonge as Priscilla Presley. “Elvis, in the epic tradition of all of Luhrmann’s work, is a brash, overwhelming experience,” Rolling Stone‘s K. Austin Collins wrote in our movie review. “It’s a carnival in movie form.

IFC Films has picked up the North American rights to the Australian crime thriller Force of Nature from director Robert Connolly.
The follow-up to Connolly’s box office The Dry reteams the director with Eric Bana, who reprises his role as Aaron Falk. Force of Nature is based on the book series by Jane Harper and captures five women taking part in a corporate hiking retreat where only four come out on the other side.
Federal Agents Falk and Carmen Cooper head deep into the Victorian mountain ranges to investigate and hopefully find their whistle-blowing informant, Alice Russell, alive.

It's that time again. Although Hulu will be adding a plethora of TV shows and movies in September, a good chunk of their extensive library will cease to exist on the streaming platform. Hulu is home to a healthy number of films and television shows in a wide array of genres and generations, but every month (due to some complicated licensing rights), the streamer loses a long list of titles that either never make it back to the platform, or take months/years to return. Thankfully, we keep track of what is departing Hulu on a monthly basis, and it's a doozy for September. From genre-defining films to cult classics, there are some absolute gems leaving Hulu this month.
We've hand-selected five films from the expiring section of Hulu's library that are worth catching up with before they are gone forever.

Baz Luhrmann’s sixth feature film, “Elvis,” has been out for a few weeks now, and it hasn’t been doing bad in terms of the domestic box office, where it’s already surpassed most of Luhrmann’s movies, other than 2013’s “The Great Gatsby.” With the caveat that we have only just crossed the midway point of the year, it still seems like a good time to look at the “Elvis” Oscars potential.
Let’s start with Luhrmann himself, because believe it or not, the Australian visionary has only been nominated for a single Oscar, for producing his 2001 masterpiece “Moulin Rouge!” That’s Luhrmann’s most successful movie with the academy, receiving eight Oscar nominations and winning two for Luhrmann’s wife Catherine Martin‘s costumes and production design, but it also went on to inspire a Broadway musical which won 10 Tony Awards 20 years after the original movie’s success.

In recreating Elvis Presley’s famous ’68 Comeback Special, “Elvis” cinematographer Mandy Walker spent hours watching and examining old footage to faithfully reproduce certain shots and lighting changes for Baz Luhrmann’s biopic.
Walker’s set replicating the Vegas showroom at the International Hilton, where Presley had his residency, is her proudest accomplishment from the film. “That set was gigantic. We had a full-on concert lighting set-up that we had to reproduce,” Walker says.
At one point, Walker and the film’s gaffer had considered bringing in professional concert lighting to program and order the lights, but she decided it was a job they could pull off. So, Walker had traditional single-lamp par can lights flown to the film’s set in Australia.
“We reproduced it all right down to the follow spots and the backdrop colors,” Walker says with pride. “There was a stills photographer, Alfred Wertheimer, who traveled with Elvis during the 1950s.

It would seem Austin Butler has used witchcraft to summon the very soul of Elvis to possess him in this larger than life biopic.
Biopics have been on our screen as long as the big screen has been around. From films like Joan of Arc (1900), The Story of the Kelly Gang (1906), Lawrence of Arabia (1962), and Amadeus (1984), to the modern burst of musical biopics like Ray (2004), Walk the Line (2005), and Bohemian Rhapsody (2018). The biopic seems to never go away and you can always expect them to be coming around near awards season, normally picking up a few acting awards. Chicago – Director Baz Luhrman’s “Elvis” has plenty of suspicious minds, but precious little mystery as his trademark excess fails to breathe new life into the tired legacy of the King. No amount of montages, quick cuts, and odd music choices can obscure the fact that we don’t see anything here that even the casual Elvis fan doesn’t already know.
Rating: 2.5/5.0
The film tells the story of the rise and fall of Elvis (Austin Butler) through the eyes of his personal Svengali, manager, and exploiter-in-chief Colonel Tom Parker (Tom Hanks). Hanks plays Parker as a grotesque force of evil who is so slimy and menacing he’s practically a Bond villain. His inscrutable accent comes and goes. He’s cagey about his background. He shouts his unscrupulous ways from the mountaintops, and brags liberally about the “snow jobs” he pulls on everyone in sight.
“Elvis” opens in theaters everywhere on June 25th.

The long shadow cast by Walk Hard remains an impressive thing. Despite debuting to mostly inattentive critical notices and abysmal box office, Jake Kasdan’s vicious send up of music biopics continues to loom over this lucrative, and often ludicrous, subgenre. Thanks to later dramatizations of the life and times of Freddie Mercury or Aretha Franklin, John C. Reilly’s turn as Dewey Cox is still relevant for predicting the flattening effect Hollywood can have on wildly different creative journeys.
Which makes Baz Luhrmann’s gaudy and happily glossy Elvis a fascinating surrender to indulgence. Never a filmmaker to be accused of subtlety, Luhrmann’s maximalist instincts carve out a power ballad to the King of Rock ‘n Roll that doesn’t just revisit the Dewey Cox formula; Elvis supersizes it with a sense of starry-eyed mythology. After the first sequence where Elvis thrusts his pelvis, and girls scream tears...
