Tommy Heinsohn, who won 10 NBA titles with the Boston Celtics as a player or coach and went on to a decades-long career as an announcer, died Tuesday in Boston, the club announced. He was 86.
“This is a devastating loss,” the Celtics ownership said in a statement. “Tommy was the ultimate Celtic. For the past 18 years, our ownership group has relied hugely on Tommy’s advice and insights and have reveled in his hundreds of stories about Red Auerbach, Bill Russell and how the Celtics became a dynasty. He will be remembered forever.”
A popular and respected Beantown legend, Heinsohn won eight titles with the Celtics as a player — including seven in a row from 1959-65 — and two more behind the bench during the 1970s. He is one of only four people inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame as both a player and a coach.

Tommy Heinsohn, a former player and coach for the Boston Celtics who later made his mark as a longtime broadcaster, has died. He was 86.
Heinsohn’s association with the Celtics spanned six decades, as both a player, coach and broadcaster for the team’s local TV games. He has been the Celtics’ color commentator alongside Mike Gorman since 1981 and is a fan-favorite for his thick Boston accent, bombastic style and overly-partisan commentary.
“We are immensely saddened by the passing of our beloved friend and colleague Tommy Heinsohn,” NBC Sports Boston, which airs Celtics games, said. “Like his time as a player and coach, Tommy also became a legend as a broadcaster over the past 39 years. He brought tremendous passion and excitement to his commentary and analysis, and helped inform and entertain generations of Celtics fans.”

Russell Wilson is pleading for change at the 2020 Espys. During Sunday night's award show, the Seattle Seahawks quarterback kicked off the evening by acknowledging several trailblazing Black athletes who paved the way for many in the sports community. From Jackie Robinson and Muhammad Ali to Bill Russell and Serena Williams, Russell gave praise to sports figures who went against the establishment while inspiring generations. "What if we didn't know their names? What if they were never a part of the conversation?" he asked while wearing a Black Lives Matter t-shirt. "And there's also this conversation: 'I can't breathe. Sports networks grappling with widespread cancellations and postponements of not just games but entire seasons used this past week to frenetically prep schedules leaning heavily on new or expanded studio talk shows, rebroadcasts of earlier matchups and library content, if they’re lucky enough to have to have it. Networks and leagues said they’re deep in discussions about rights to air older games and about developing new programming for this coronavirus moment, but just how they’ll be filing airtime is extremely fluid.

Barely holding back tears, host and comedian Jimmy Kimmel paid tribute to Kobe Bryant, his daughter Gianna Bryant and the other victims of the helicopter crash that took their lives last month.
“I don’t think any of us could have imagined this,” he said. “Everywhere you go, you see his face, his number, Gigi’s face, Gigi’s number at every intersection. There are hundreds of murals painted by artists who were inspired not because he’s a basketball player, but because Kobe was an artist, too.”
Kimmel noted that there were murals of the NBA star not just in Los Angeles, but across the country, even, “Boston, for God’s sake,” he quipped.
“In places where you would be booed on the court, Kobe is missed. Even the great Boston Celtic Bill Russell wore number 24 on a Lakers jersey to yesterday’s game. I knew he would come to us eventually,...

The ESPYs’ television broadcast only paints so much of the picture of what went down at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles from sports’ biggest award ceremony. Viewers at home saw Tracy Morgan host, celebrities like Sandra Bullock present and athletes including Drew Brees, Alex Morgan and Giannis Antetokounmpo receive awards, but they didn’t quite catch all the exciting moments left off TV. Here’s what they missed:
“Fresh Prince” Dwyane Wade: During a commercial break karaoke challenge, Wade showed his skills on the mic as he rapped along to “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” theme song. The retired basketball superstar laid down the rhymes from the comfort of his own seat, next to his wife, Gabrielle Union. “In West Philadelphia born and raised…” Wade rapped, filling in the remainder of the song with perfect memory as the lyrics cut out.

The Toronto Raptors’ historic victory the 2019 NBA Finals is such a big deal that superfan Drake is dropping not one, but two new tunes today in celebration- and ABC might be grooving along.
After a six-game series that has been consistently down double digits from recent years, the defeat of the Golden State Warriors last night by the first non-American team to ever hoist the Larry O’Brien Championship trophy actually found an even keel for the NBA and the Disney-owned network.
Going down the wire in the finals seconds of Steph Curry and an injury burdened Gsw’s final game at Oakland’s Oracle Arena, the 114-110 win for Kawhi Leonard and the crew from T.O. snared a 13.2/24 metered market result.

The title for Showtime documentary series “Shut Up and Dribble” was inspired by LeBron James’ feud with Fox News host Laura Ingraham last February, but the project had been in the works long before that.
“I don’t believe in coincidences … that it took two years to make and got released now after the world has become increasingly politicized is very synchronistic,” director Gotham Chopra told TheWrap. “When we first started, it was going to be equal parts social impact and cultural impact — and there was going to be more basketball in it — but this just felt like a natural evolution of the project and the conversation.”
James clearly didn’t heed Ingraham’s advice to “keep the political comments” to himself and instead used her words against her on the three-part series that he executive produced along with Maverick Carter and Chopra. Former ESPN anchor Jemele Hill, who has...

ESPN Films’ 20-hour, six-week documentary “Basketball: A Love Story” more resembles a modern rom-com than your typical documentary. Rather than a chronological history lesson, it’s an episodic collection of anecdotes and stories that in some ways have more in common with “Love, Actually” than Ken Burns’ completist “Baseball.”
The film weaves through the heartbreaking story of paralyzed player Maurice Stokes and his dedicated teammate Jack Twyman to the bitter women’s basketball rivalry of Tennessee’s Pat Summit and Connecticut’s Geno Auriemma to tales of UCLA’s rise, the Dream Team, the Magic/Bird rivalry, the Aba and the emergence of international stars in the NBA with plenty of stops in-between.

In many ways, the end of the 2018 NBA Finals was very much like the end of the 2017 NBA Finals, except in the ratings for the league and ABC.
The similarities saw the Golden State Warriors defeat the Cleveland Cavaliers to win the Larry O’Brien trophy, just like the 2015 champs did last year over the 2016 winners. Once again, Game 4 was held in LeBron James’ house at a packed Quicken Loans Arena. And just like 2017, another magnificent performance by the Warriors’ Kevin Durant saw the forward rightly given the Bill Russell Finals Mvp award amid his celebrating teammates’ cheers and the presence of the basketball legend himself.

Kobe Bryant's numbers have officially been retired.
The Black Mamba returned to the Staples Center in Los Angeles on Monday night, as his former team, the Los Angeles Lakers, retired both of his career jersey numbers, 8 and 24. Kobe played his entire 20-year career with the Lakers.

When Iconoclasts, a new series co-produced by the Sundance Channel and Grey Goose Entertainment, airs on the premium cable channel tonight, viewers will not see any Grey Goose vodka bottles or brand signage in the show. Nor will they witness featured guests Samuel L. Jackson and Bill Russell drinking Grey Goose or extolling its virtues despite the fact that the company's new production arm contributed the bulk of the $15 million price tag for the six-part series. With hundreds of advertisers shelling out millions of dollars just for the opportunity to feature their products in films and television shows produced by others, many branded-entertainment experts are baffled by the Grey Goose strategy and fail to comprehend why an advertiser would be willing to fork over enough cash to produce a film or television show only to then intentionally omit its brand from the content or, at best, limit it to a very marginal role. Yet it is a strategy that is now being tried by several advertisers searching for new and innovative ways to break through the clutter and connect with their consumers.
