Exclusive: Sarayu Blue won her part starring alongside Nicole Kidman in Lulu Wang’s Prime Video limited series Expats at a time when she didn’t know if she “could lift the boulder back up the hill.”
In an interview with Breaking Baz, the Indian-American actress recalls how she had just gone through the jubilation of landing the lead role in Aseem Bahra’s NBC series I Feel Bad in 2018 and the devastation when it was cancelled after just one season. The episode had a real impact.
Landing the role in the Amy Poehler-executive produced comedy had been “an enormous thing,” says Blue, because it was a role that was ”never written Indian…. and I tested against three white women for it.” She instantly corrects herself by replacing the aggressive “against” with a softer “with.”

Exclusive: Executive Producer Dani Melia describes how “a scrappy team” that made filmmaker Lulu Wang’s acclaimed low-budget feature The Farewell joined forces with Blossom Films’ Nicole Kidman and Per Saari to make “this big international production” Expats for Prime Video.
Melia tells me how she and Wang had “long talked about wanting to continue working together” after making The Farewell.
Then, while they were promoting the movie in Australia, Kidman approached Wang about directing an adaptation of Janice Y.K. Lee’s book The Expatriates.
Wang was excited, and Melia recalls the director telling her: ”I need to find a way to do this with you and the rest of the crew who did The Farewell. I want my creative team onboard, and I think this should be our next thing.”
Melia says that quite a few creatives from The Farewell ended up making the leap with them.

Whenever a producer in recent times has exited their partnership with a star, quite often said producer’s output is not as robust.
It’s a different situation for Bruna Papandrea, who after peeling off from Reese Witherspoon’s Pacific Standard Production Company has been on quite a roll with such TV hits as HBO’s The Undoing, Netflix’s Anatomy of a Scandal and Luckiest Girl Alive, Hulu’s Nine Perfect Strangers and now the Prime Video limited series The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart based on Holly Ringland’s novel. This is all under Papandrea’s six-year-old production banner Made Up Stories, which is devoted to female-centric stories.
On today’s Crew Call podcast, we talk with Papandrea about why she went solo with Made Up Stories, the genesis of The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart, and more.
Lost Flowers of Alice Hart follows the story of the title protagonist.

Max is touting strong viewership for its true-crime limited drama series Love & Death.
The streaming service says that the Elizabeth Olsen and Jesse Plemons series has become its number one most-watched Max original limited series globally.
Previous limited series for the Warner Bros. Discovery-owned service, which didn’t give any hard numbers for Love & Death, include Station Eleven, Dmz and The Staircase.
It also noted that the limited series, which comes from writer David E. Kelley and director Lesli Linka Glatter, had the biggest launch of any Max original in 2023. However, there haven’t been any other big original drama or comedy launches this year – Love & Death has been its first original live-action scripted title to launch out of the U.S. since Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin and Rap Sh!t in July 2022, although it has launched series such as animated comedy Fired on Mars...

If you glance at the soundtrack listing for “Love & Death,” you’ll basically find a greatest hits collection of bangers from the ’70s. Set from 1978-80, the HBO Max limited series features tunes from Bee Gees, Janis Joplin, Al Green, Dolly Parton and Neil Diamond, to name a few, culled by music supervisor Robin Urdang. “It’s one of my favorite eras,” she tells Gold Derby (watch above). “A lot of the songs were scripted originally because David E. Kelley and Lesli Linka Glatter had in mind songs that they wanted to use. When I read the script and saw that in there, I was like, ‘Oh, my God! This is like my favorite music. I have to do the show.'”

Desperate housewives never got out of style on television, and in “Love & Death,” Elizabeth Olsen is playing a particularly troubled one. The “Wandavision” and “Sorry for Your Loss” actor stars in the final trailer for the HBO Max series, released this Thursday.
In “Love & Death,” Olsen portrays Candy Montgomery, a real-life Texas housewife charged in 1980 for the murder of her friend and neighbor Betty Gore after Gore was found dead in her house from 41 axe wounds. During Montgomery’s trial, it came to light that she was cheating on her husband Pat with Gore’s husband Allan, and she pled self-defense by claiming that Gore attacked her after discovering evidence of the affair. Montgomery was eventually declared not guilty by the jury, in a verdict that prompted outcry from Gore’s family and their small-town community.

We’re living in a true crime boom in both scripted and unscripted television — but “Love & Death” director and exec producer Lesli Linka Glatter said she hopes her new HBO Max series will be seen as much more than that.
Sure, the series involves the true story of accused (but acquitted) axe murderer Candy Montgomery, played by Elizabeth Olsen. “There is a horrible true crime at the core of this, but we didn’t want it to be just a true crime story,” Glatter said Saturday in a panel discussion after the premiere of “Love & Death” at the South by Southwest festival. And the show doesn’t shy away from Montgomery’s actions. But “it’s really, things are not what they appear to be. You have to go deeper to see what’s really going on. We really tried to look at the ‘how’ and ‘why’ rather than the ‘what.

The Hitchcockian thriller Holland, Michigan is a project that has spent the last decade in development hell. It started out with a screenplay by Andrew Sodroski, creator of the Discovery television series Manhunt, that was featured on the Black List back in 2013. At one point, documentarian Errol Morris was going to direct a version of Holland, Michigan that was going to star Naomi Watts, Bryan Cranston, and Edgar Ramirez. But it fell apart before filming could begin. Now director Mimi Cave – who recently made her feature directorial debut with the thriller Fresh – and producer/star Nicole Kidman (Moulin Rouge) are working together to push the project into production for Amazon Prime Video… and it’s looking like this version of Holland, Michigan is actually going to happen! We’ve previously heard that Kidman is going to be joined in the cast by Gael García Bernal (Werewolf by Night), Matthew Macfadyen...

Elizabeth Olsen isn’t satisfied in the trailer for Love & Death.
The official first look at the HBO Max true-crime drama (below) focuses on Candy Montgomery (Olsen) and Allan Gore (Jesse Plemons), as one-half of two churchgoing couples enjoying small town family life in Texas… until somebody picks up an axe, as the logline reads (and, as the true story goes).
“I have done all the things a wife is supposed to do. The house. The meals. Where is the payback?” Olsen’s Candy asks in voiceover, expressing her suburban housewife ennui, before propositioning Plemons’ Allan: “Would you be interested in having an affair?”
The limited series is written by David E. Kelley (Big Little Lies, The Undoing) and directed by Lesli Linka Glatter (Homeland, Mad Men), who helms the majority of the episodes. The seven-episode series premieres with the first three installments on April 27, followed by a weekly release on Thursdays.
