It’s a big news week for our old pal Swamp Thing. DC Studios head James Gunn announced that a Swamp Thing movie will be part of the first slate of DC films he will be producing as he reboots the DC Universe. The next day, we heard that Logan director James Mangold is in early talks to direct the Swamp Thing movie. This morning, we released a Revisited episode that looks back at director Wes Craven’s 1982 version of Swamp Thing (you can watch that in the embed above). And now Mvd Entertainment is gearing up to give the 1989 sequel The Return of Swamp Thing a 4K Uhd release! The release date is February 7th, and copies can be pre-ordered at This Link.

Kevin Spacey is Nixon and Michael Shannon is Elvis in this slightly disjointed but often very fun drama...
If you were to draw up a list of likely actors to play Elvis, I’d wager that Michael Shannon wouldn’t come particularly high up in the rankings. His acting chops are well proven, but he comes with an enigmatic energy which is so quintessentially Shannon that it would be hard for the viewer to shake that and truly believe they’re watching The King.
This was my worry going into Elvis & Nixon, and this is still how I feel after Elvis & Nixon. But that isn’t to say that there weren’t moments of fun in between. True, I never suspended my disbelief long enough to forget that I was watching General Zod as Elvis - with all the wiry Shannon eccentricities and not much of the “uh,...

Until February 1971, President Richard Nixon had meetings in the Oval Office unrecorded, unable to be called upon by him and his staff as well as those that came after him. One of those such meetings included the December 21, 1970 meeting he had with the king, Elvis Presley.
In a bizarre twist of actual historic events, Elvis Presley wanted a meeting with Richard Nixon in the hopes of becoming a “Federal Agent at Large” and carrying an official Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs badge. His wife Priscilla wrote that “the narc badge represented some kind of ultimate power to him . . . With the federal narcotics badge, he could legally enter any country both wearing guns and carrying any drugs he wished.” Well don’t we wish the same!

Chicago – Tom Hanks is using his golden years as a vehicle to stretch his performance skills, and his role as a sort of “Death of a Salesman” spin in “A Hologram for the King” gives him an opportunity to keep stretching. The stylish film floats within the focus on his character, and he delivers.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
Based on a Dave Eggers novel, “A Hologram for the King” has a lot going on, as Hanks portrays a character with one last shot at making the sale in the oddball Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Director Tom Tykwer (“Cloud Atlas”) adds some European-style visuals to the story, and the whole things works because the blend is right. Hanks handles the path of the role through a nice progression, and uses his world weariness as an older actor effectively. The story peters out a bit towards the end, but in general the movie is entertaining,...

Chicago – “When two great saints meet, it’s a humbling experience,” said Paul McCartney of John and Yoko. Well that also applies to “Elvis & Nixon.” Their meeting, albeit brief, has layers of meaning for our times – and their time – and the movie with the “E&N” title exposes that meaning with humor and grace.
Rating: 4.5/5.0
Elvis Presley, nicknamed the “King of Rock ‘n Roll,” had prodigious fame and an appetite to match. Richard Milhous Nixon, President of the United States by default because all of his opponents were either killed or marginalized by the Vietnam War, was a tic-filled paranoid with little regard for his constituency beyond power. They met because Elvis wanted an honorary title, and Nixon – through his aides – wanted legitimacy in the “youth vote.” In the realm of the film, they gave each other something, but not exactly what they expected. All the ambiguities and underlying symbols...

Likely you have seen the photo: Richard Nixon, President of the United States, shaking hands with Elvis Presley, the King of Rock N’ Roll in full Las Vegas costume. It looks like a joke, one staged with impersonators, but the photo is real and, as the film tells us, the most requested photo of the National Archives.
This absurd, unlikely meeting is the basis of Elvis & Nixon a hilarious satire starring Kevin Spacey as Nixon and Michael Shannon as Elvis. The film, directed by Liza Johnson with a script by Joey Sagal, Hanala Sagal and Cary Elwes, is sly, clever and funny, with a little thoughtful reflection on the insular nature of great fame or power, and human relationships.

Based on a true-ish, larger-than-life story, Elvis & Nixon sounds like a fabricated clash of public icons, but I assure you this craziness actually happened (karate chops and all?). In 1970, Elvis drove up to the White House, knocked on the door, and demanded a pow-wow with President Nixon. A conversation was had and Elvis was bestowed a power some lawmakers forgot even existed. It’s an obscure, influential, and epic moment from America’s past, begging for a cinematic retelling, yet we feel none of the importance that director Liza Johnson strives to deliver. This swanky 70s time machine dresses the part and talks the talk, but fails to honor such patriotic prestige with a story truly deserving of such Mt. Rushmore-worthy weirdness.
Shannon stars as the hand-waving, self-proclaimed “King” who needs no introduction – Elvis Presley. His musicianship is the stuff of legends, but this isn’t a movie about making albums and dealing with stardom.

I’ll mention this tidbit again before the week is out, but a lot of things debuting currently at the Tribeca Film Festival are also just hitting theaters this weekend as well. One such movie is Elvis & Nixon, which I’ve seen and enjoyed for the most part. I don’t especially think it’s an awards player, but as speculative entertainment and a festival entry, it certainly does the trick, and that’s nothing to sneeze at. Mostly, it’s an effectively comedic star vehicle for Michael Shannon and Kevin Spacey, as well as a mild satire. It won’t blow you away, but it likely will make you giggle a fair amount. The film is a look at what led up to the most requested photograph in the National Archives, which is an image of President Richard Nixon (Spacey) shaking hands with Elvis Presley (Shannon) in the Oval Office.

The actor underplays Presley to great effect in Liza Johnson’s entertaining imagining of the legendary meeting between the president and the rock icon
The meeting between Richard M Nixon and Elvis Presley on 21 December 1970, is so legendary that the photograph that immortalized the moment is still the most requested image in the National Archives. It’s a wonder, then, that it’s taken this long to imagine their summit on screen.
Writers Joey Sagal, Hanala Sagal and Cary Elwes take major artistic liberties to retell the story of that the encounter and the events leading up to it in Elvis & Nixon, a breezy comedy nimbly directed by Liza Johnson (Hateship Loveship).

The first trailer has been released for the film Elvis & Nixon, and it looks great! Michael Shannon takes on the role of the rock 'n roll legend and Kevin Spacey plays the President of the United States. I wasn't really sure what to expect from this and it's a lot funnier than I expected it would be.
The movie tells the true story of when Elvis made an urgent request to be inducted into the Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs. His request was driven by his hatred of the drug culture that had emerged during that time. He wanted the opportunity to execute some justice. Here's the synopsis:
Elvis & Nixon follows two men at the height of their powers, conscious they could not stay on top forever, both ripped with fear of the inevitable, sharing one famous private moment in the Oval office. The film recounts the morning of...

This is our first look at the historical comedy film Elvis & Nixon, which features Kevin Spacey as Nixon and Michael Shannon as Elvis. This is truly an intriguing true story, and it’s sure to make for a great movie.
Elvis & Nixon follows two men at the height of their powers, conscious they could not stay on top forever, both ripped with fear of the inevitable, sharing one famous private moment in the Oval office. The film recounts the morning of December 21st 1970, when the King of Rock’ n Roll (Shannon) showed up on the White House lawn to request a meeting with the most powerful man in the world, President Richard Nixon (Spacey). He had a very urgent request: to be sworn in as an undercover Federal Agent at large. This intimate moment in the Oval office between two men at the height of their powers has never been told.

Here’s your first look at Kevin Spacey as President Richard Nixon and Michael Shannon as Elvis Presley from the comedy “Elvis & Nixon.” Currently in production, the film re-creates the intimate meeting in the Oval Office between two men, which resulted in Nixon deputizing Presley as an honorary "federal agent at large" with respect to illicit drugs and which is pretty funny in hindsight. Directed by Liza Johnson (“Hateship Loveship, “Return”), the story is based off a screenplay by producer/writer Cary Elwes and Hanala and Joey Sagal. The image above is a real moment in history, depicting the when the hip swinging singer and movie star Elvis Presley met the 37th president of the United States, Richard Milhous Nixon. And soon it'll be a movie starring Michael Shannon and Kevin Spacey. Coming Soon reports Boardwalk Empire's Michael Shannon will play Presley to House of Cards star Kevin Spacey's Nixon in the docudrama Elvis & Nixon. The screenplay, penned by Hanala Sagal, Joey Sagal and Princess Bride star Cary Elwes, reportedly captures these two men--one a figure of pop culture, the other one of the most influential politicians of his time--at a moment when both were at the peak of their power, but fully aware of how short these heydays can be. Regarding the casting of Shannon and Spacey, producer Cassian Elwes said in an official statement, "After the enormous success of The Butler I have a...

Well, say hello to "Elvis & Nixon," the "Mothra vs. Godzilla" of the Richard Nixon franchise. Ok, "Elvis & Nixon" has nothing to do with Howard’s film, but it is an in-the-works docudrama starring two major talents that could prove even more fruitful than the Michael Sheen/Frank Langella pairing. Production company Bloom announced late Wednesday evening that Michael Shannon will play Elvis Presley against Kevin Spacey’s Richard Nixon in the based-on-a-true-story film. Liza Johnson ("Return," "Hateship Loveship") will direct "Elvis & Nixon" based on a script by Cary Elwes (of "Princess Bride" fame)and actors Hanala and Joey Sagal. Indie producer Cassian Elwes ("The Butler," Cary’s brother) will produce alongside Holly Wiersma ("Dallas Buyers Club"). It’s a bad day for historical pieces, with THR informing us that Eric Bana‘s left Elvis & Nixon, a dramedy that’s will mark the directorial debut of Cary Elwes. Other than his to-the-point note of “I’m no longer attached,” we don’t know what exactly made the decision go through; I’d guess scheduling is only the root cause, seeing as he’s already attached himself in an executive producer capacity. A shame — especially when you hear Bana does a great impersonation of The King, and I’d kill to see it — but I’m just hoping this can go forward with another top choice in the blue suede shoes.

Here's one more film to watch crawl towards the screen in the coming months, thanks to the American Film Market. Elvis & Nixon is an indie based on the real-life meeting between the crooner and the President, and will mark the feature directing debut of actor Cary Elwes, who co-wrote with Joey Sagal and Hanala Sagal. (And who is probably still best known for his role in The Princess Bride.) To play Elvis, Elwes and his producers have landed Eric Bana -- strike that, Bana is one of the producers. Meanwhile, Danny Huston (The Proposition, Clash of the Titans, John Adams) will play Richard M. Nixon. And if this week's release of J. Edgar proves anything, it is that you don't need someone who is a dead ringer for a famous figure. Actually, I'm not sure that J. Edgar really proves that, but regardless, Huston will probably make a better...

Eric Bana’s CV is nothing if not varied. He was a hard-as-nails soldier in Black Hawk Down, a nerdy scientist/furious green giant in Hulk, a vengeful Romulan in Star Trek, a hardened assassin in Hanna, a Mossad agent in Munich and a fighting man in a skirt in Troy. All this from a guy with a background in stand-up comedy.
Never one to balk at a challenge, Bana is now going to try his hand at being Elvis, for the directorial debut of Cary Elwes (Liar Liar, The Princess Bride, Saw), which will see Bana’s Elvis visiting (possibly) Danny Huston’s Nixon at the White House, for a meeting that actually took place in December 1970, before all of that pesky Watergate business kicked off. Apparently, Presley requested a meeting with Nixon, suggesting that he be appointed Nixon’s agent at large with the Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs Bureau.

We’ve had Frost/Nixon, so what about Elvis & Nixon?
The Hollywood Reporter say Eric Bana and Danny Huston have signed up for the titular roles in Carey Elwes’ directorial debut with Bana cast as the legendary singer and Huston stepping into the infamous former U.S. President’s shoes.
The film will focus on a meeting between Presley and Nixon in the late 70s, which Presley initiated after sending the then President a six-page letter requesting he be made a ‘Federal Agent at Large’ to aid where he could in combating the growing drug culture – of which history tells us Presley had first-hand experience.
Whilst is shares half a title, a historical figure and the premise of a film based around a meeting it seems unlikely the end product will much resemble Frost/Nixon but exactly what tone the film will take is not clear yet. But we doubt...
