Nick and Annie got an inside scoop from BBC News correspondent Mark Savage who spoke to Madonna’s musical director Stuart Price about the singer’s tour. In the latest episode of Sidetracked with Annie and Nick, Mark reveals there would be about 45 songs played during the show, and no band on stage for the first time in Madonna’s career. “The great thing about Stuart Price is he knows this show inside out,” Mark tells Nick and Annie. “...

Forty years ago, Charles Bronson starred in a serial killer thriller called 10 to Midnight. Now Bronson look-alike Robert Bronzi has taken the lead in a thriller called 12 to Midnight… but Bronzi is going to have to face off with a supernatural threat in this one. The villain in 12 to Midnight is a werewolf!
Currently filming in California and the coal regions of northeast Pennsylvania, 12 to Midnight is being directed by Mark Savage (Purgatory Road) from a screenplay he crafted with Joe Knetter, producer Jeff Miller, and cast member Tom Parnell. Based on a story by Miller, the film concerns a detective, kicked off the force and despondent after the murder of his wife drives him to drink, who is asked back to the force when a new string of murders seem connected to his wife’s, and the killer appears to be taunting him. Only the killer may be superhuman,...

Stars: Bill Oberst Jr., Michael Pare, Tom Parnell, Mark Savage, Khalimah Gaston, Alexander Pennecke, Pacey Liz Walker, Austin Janowsky, Scot Scurlock, Liz DeCoudres, Kristina Beringer, Eve Jordan Litchfield | Written by Tom Parnell, Mark Savage | Directed by Mark Savage
Back when I reviewed Purgatory Road I said it might be the film to finally put director Mark Savage over in the US market. Instead, he dropped off the map for four years. Now he and co-writer Tom Parnell back with Painkiller, a sequel to their 2016 dark comedy Stressed to Kill which I haven’t seen. That film featured Bill Oberst Jr. as Bill Johnson, a man who takes the doctor’s advice to get rid of stress a bit too literally and starts killing those who annoy him. In Painkiller, originally titled Stressed to Kill: Doctor’s Orders, he’s back, but his killing has a different focus.
Bill is a radio talk jock.

"You take your advice... and get the hell out of here!" Cinedigm has released an official trailer for an indie action thriller titled Painkiller, from filmmaker Mark Savage. They've finally reached the "let's tell a gritty vengeance story" point in the opioid crisis, because of course the best thing to do now to combat it is to take out all those who were/are complicit. Written by Savage and Tom Parnell, the story is drawn from the plight of millions of Americans and is produced with the raw emotions of their suffering. After losing his daughter to a drug overdose, a broken father starts a brutal vigilante campaign to bring down the many white-collar criminals behind the opioid epidemic. The timely and powerful thriller stars acting veterans Michael Paré and Bill Oberst Jr. and takes an unapologetic look at a crisis facing countless American families. The full cast includes Alexander Pennecke,...

Tagline: "This Vigilante Gives Them a Taste of Their Own Medicine." Director Mark Savage (Stressed to Kill) returns to film with the politicized thriller Painkiller. In the story, a vigilante is targeting white collar criminals, who he believes are behind the opioid epidemic. Now, it is a race against time as this father wages violence against drug companies. As well as director Savage, this title includes actors: Bill Oberst Jr. ("Scream Queens"), Michael Paré (Gangster Land) and Alexander Pennecke. A new trailer and poster are here, ahead of a U.S. release. The trailer shows Bill Johnson (Oberst Jr.) making his case against drug manufacturers. Meanwhile, a rogue cop becomes wound up in Bill's violent plans. Together, they hope to dismantle a network of doctors - who have profited off of others' suffering. As well, the movie poster shows one of the masks used by the vigilantes. The stars and...

Delirium, the production company whose maiden outing was the 2016 Bill Oberst Jr.-Armand Assante hit thriller Stressed To Kill, has just announced it will go into production on Purgatory Road in November 2016 for delivery mid-2017.
Directed by Mark Savage, scripted by Savage and Tom Parnell, and produced by Chris Smernes, the team behind Stressed To Kill, the film has been described as hardcore horror with a bloody helping of twisted “faith”. Set in the American South, it depicts the adventures of two brothers, –– one a psychotic, ex-communicated priest (Gary Cairns; Daylight’S End, Justified, Monumental), the other an increasingly troubled sidekick (Luke Albright; Devil’S Pass, 12 Rounds, Burn Notice) –– whose unconventional mission involves a traveling confessional and a distorted view of salvation. Entering their perfectly bloody world is a mysterious woman (Trista Robinson; The Human Race, Silent Retreat, Malignant) whom, while offering potential assistance,...

120/80: Stressed To Kill is the latest thriller directed by Mark Savage. In the film, Bill Oberst Jr. stars as Bill Johnson, an highly agitated everyman who goes on a crusade to eliminate every source of stress in his life, i.e. all the people who irritate him. As the bodies pile up, Bill’s murder rampage is noted by a psychotic — but sympathetic — police detective (Armand Assante) who encourages Bill to up his game.
Savage began his career creating twisted films in his native Australia, such as Sensitive New Age Killer and Defenceless: A Blood Symphony, many of which screened at the Melbourne Underground Film Festival. He has since relocated to the Los Angeles area and is in various stages of production on several feature films.

Break out the candles! The venerable Melbourne Underground Film Festival becomes a full-fledged teenager when it celebrates its 16th annual edition on September 11-20 this year.
Last year saw a stripped down Muff, focusing on local outre filmmakers and a fine selection of international weirdness — and they want more this year. The fest will also be returning to its new home, the Backlot Studios.
Sixteen years and counting, the Melbourne Underground Film Festival has shown a fierce commitment to under appreciated cinema and it’s awesome to see them still kicking it. If your film is kick ass, a little bit or a lot out there and faintly uncategorizable and possibly unloved wherever “decent” people like to congregate, then Muff might be a good home for it.
See below for submission deadlines, entry fee information, submission links and guidelines.

BBC media correspondent Torin Douglas's colleagues really made sure his leaving party at Broadcasting House was memorable on Tuesday night, thanks to a video montage of his career and 24 years at the BBC, concluding with a tribute clip from Michael Douglas saying: "nobody has done more for the media than my cousin, Torin". And, no, it wasn't some clever virtual reality trick. The recording was provided by the enterprising Mark Savage, producer for BBC arts editor Will Gompertz, who persuaded the star to play along and make the sound bite at last month's Cannes film festival, where he was promoting his new movie.

My favorite line from this trailer: “The blood and guts fly out….the camera does not stop rolling!”…Well, let’s hope not!
The movie’s lead actor, who is slicing his way through more than half-naked nubile bodies is Bill Oberst Jr. If you were at the screening of the St. Louis-lensed shocker Coyote last month at Mx Theater, you saw that film’s star Mr. Oberst who is currently swinging for the title of “Hardest Working Man In Horror” with no less than twelve major roles in independent horror films this year. Bill’s most famous role was as honest Abe in Abraham Lincoln Vs Zombies (2012), which, though not quite as good as Abe Lincoln Vampire Hunter, was far superior than that boring-ass Speilberg movie.
The Los Angeles-based actor has just arrived in the woods of Kentucky to start shooting his 6th feature film of the year (The...

American actor Bill Oberst, Jr., whom Savage calls "a new Lon Chaney", is attached to play Baker, the career criminal of the brothers. Horror director Mark Savage has been attached to the upcoming Circus of Dread. Other attachments include Bill Oberst Jr. (seen left) and Domiziano Arcangeli; both actors will star in this feature, which is inspired by Tod Browning's 1932 film, Freaks. The story follows two brothers into a demented carnival. Here hell awaits them.
Also hellish are actor Bill Oberst Jr.'s comments on the film and its content: "Mark Savage's script is brutal, explicit and disturbing; yet it is a story of salvation. I'm convinced that if Mark can film what he has written, Circus Of Dread will be a film that fans of horror and of artistic cinema will be talking about for decades." Oberst recently made a showing in Michael Emanuel's Scary or Die. Domiziano Arcangeli might be best remembered for his role as in Domiziano Christopharo's House of Flesh Mannequins. Both actors have a long history in horror filmmaking.

Over the New Year’s weekend, Bad Lit: The Journal of Underground Film launched another large-scale project aimed at providing the most comprehensive coverage of the avant-garde, experimental and cult film world. This project consists of creating enhanced index pages for the underground filmmakers written about on the site, containing biographical information, filmographies and lists of all the articles written about them.
While a version of these index pages have existed on Bad Lit for a little over a year, they were very poorly formatted and bordered on the edge of useless. From appearances, it may look as if these index pages have improved only in design and layout, but an entire new back-end system is now being used to create them, allowing for even more helpful information to be added in the future.
As of this writing, there are only 132 underground filmmakers with an enhanced index page, most of...

A man dressed in a nice suit washes up on a remote island inhabited by a carefree, naked woman. Sounds like paradise, right? But in Mark Savage‘s upcoming FertIsle, it’s all a big nightmare as the woman wants nothing more to be left alone on her island with her collection of broken dolls.
The film stars John Arden and Mervina McLelland; and will be the first release from Cinenature.
Savage describes the film as: “My cinematic obsessions — male/female relationships, dolls, islands, the ocean, the grotesque, and the beautiful — are given full voice here.”
If you want to learn more about those obsessions, please visit Savage’s highly entertaining blog, Phantom of Pulp.

Joey Lawrence‘s house has turned into a full-fledged spell-a-thon!
Whereas the actor and wife Chandie used the technique for adult lingo only, Lawrence admits their best-kept secret has become useless since daughter Charleston, 5, has caught on.

“So she goes, ‘Dad, you just said n-o. I know what that is.’”

And here we are in October, my favorite month:
Some of you who have clicked on Phantom of Pulp links I’ve posted in the past may not realize that the ol’ Phantom is Australian filmmaker Mark Savage, who has posted up some great images from his upcoming horror flick fertISLE. Kind of a short list this week. Not sure why that is, but what I can say is that there are some really great articles linked to below.
Underground figures invaded mainstream newspapers this week. First, the Alexandria Gazette Packet has a very lovely profile of the legendary Mink Stole. Then, the Vancouver son profiled bad boy pornographer and avant-garde troublemaker Bruce Labruce. Now you can download the amazing soundtrack to Jaimz Asmundson’s trippy short film The Magus.Mark Savage has tons of great photos from his latest naughty production, the awesomely titled Pond Scum, which looks very classic transgression-ish just from the pictures of star Renae Boult.I always really enjoy reading Bill Plympton’s reviews of classic animated films. They’re usually very brief, but direct and insightful. Most recently, he checked out and loathed The Great Mouse Detective.Jack Sargeant has a nice, short write-up of...

I ran a post awhile back questioning whether Indie Filmmaking best be thought of as a hobby culture now. It stimulated an interesting conversation. Among those to respond was filmmaker Mark Savage and I asked if he'd be interested in expanding his thoughts into a guest post. Mark knows what it takes to make things happen. He has heard the calling. Priesthood is often described as a vocation. It’s more than just a job. It’s a commitment to a lifestyle and all that that entails. Men and women of the cloth answer a calling to become a Soldier of Christ.…...

The big news this week is that the last lab in the UK has just stopped printing 16mm film. That’s right: It is now impossible to get your 16mm film printed in England! Thanks, Deluxe! Filmmaker Tacita Dean writes an impassioned, personal article about this devastating blow to the film world for the Guardian.(By the way, the image above was taken by documentary filmmaker Lynne Sachs and is of Craig Baldwin’s 16mm film archive.)At Africa Is a Country, Sean Jacobs interviews South African filmmaker Dylan Valley about the documentary The Uprising of Hangberg, which Valley co-directed with Bad Lit fave Aryan Kaganof. The film documents the South African police crackdown of a small village full of “alleged” squatters. Heavy emphasis on “alleged.

What do musician Alex Chilton and filmmakers Luis Buñuel and Max Le Cain have in common? Dang if I know, but there’s some connection between the three in Bill Mousoulis‘ experimental short film The Experimenting Angel. (Gotta love that title!) The film is basically split into two interweaving parts: One is a series of still photographs of Le Cain at what appears to be either a film shoot or a performance — or both — in an old church; and the other is scenes taken from Buñuel’s L’Age d’Or (1930). The Chilton portion of the film is, of course, on the soundtrack.
Born in Australia, Mousoulis is of Greek descent and it’s in Greece where he currently mostly resides. He’s a self-taught filmmaker, having originally trained himself using Super-8 cameras, much like fellow Australian indie director Mark Savage. In fact, Mousoulis was so enthusiastic about using that...

Since 2010 is the Year of the Underground Film Loop, I’ve been contemplating starting a series of articles that give practical tips on how to maintain an underground film website for underground film bloggers who are just starting out or are looking to strengthen their existing site. This article exists somewhere between practical advice and the theorizing I’ve been doing so far this year.
I mean, it’s not like Bad Lit is a major success in the big picture of it all. But, for what it is, I think it’s doing pretty well. Actually, the traffic the site gets isn’t a big secret. You can check out the demographics of my readership on Quantcast. (I signed up with them back in Dec.) So, maybe I can offer some help to anyone who wants it.
Bad Lit began way back in 1998 when it was just a hosted page within AOL.

Doesn’t anybody pity poor Dick Cheney? Finally let out of the asylum, left to wander the streets as a common bum, relying on the kindness of strangers for food and booze — and frequently finding nothing but unkindness. Pity him or not, follow his downwardly spiraling post V.P. career in this music video by powerhouse Australian filmmakers Richard Wolstencroft and Mark Savage. Wolstencroft directs; Savage D.P.’s; and the song is “This World (Done Me Wrong)” by the band Snog.

Lloyd Kaufman’s Troma Entertainment has posted a bunch of their classic horror films on Hulu, but the one to really watch is the demented 1980 flick Mother’s Day. That’s it embedded above, which you can view in its entirety. Alas, the film is littered with advertisements, but at least it’s shown in all it’s full gory glory. Even if you don’t end up watching the entire film, the opening five minutes are a must see with it’s goofy parody of the E.S.T movement that was popular back in the day and, more importantly, the ambitious decapitation stunt.
Coincidentally, Mark Savage posted up an excellent analysis of the film just a few months ago on his Phantom of Pulp blog, so it’s been on my mind recently. Mother’s Day is another one of those films that came out at the height of the slasher movie craze,...
