G4, the Comcast Spectacor-owned cable channel dedicated to gaming, has shut down — again.
Dave Scott, the Comcast Spectacor chairman and CEO, broke the news to the G4 staff in a memo circulated on Sunday. (IndieWire obtained the note; it’s posted below.) Comcast Spectacor is the sports- and entertainment-focused subsidiary of Comcast that owns the NHL’s Philadelphia Flyers and used to own the NBA’s Philadelphia 76ers. Forty-five staffers at G4 lost their jobs immediately as a result of the decision.
The shutdown comes just under a year since the channel’s relaunch last November. The channel’s relaunch — first announced in July 2020 — followed seven dormant years for the gaming channel, which first began in 2002. The early version of the network was operated by G4 Media, a joint venture between Comcast and NBC Universal Cable.

G4 is shutting down — again.
Comcast Spectacor, the cable and entertainment giant’s sports and esports division, told G4 TV employees Sunday that the gaming network was shutting down effective immediately. The decision has resulted in 45 staff members of G4 TV losing their jobs.
In a memo, obtained by Variety, Comcast Spectacor chairman and CEO Dave Scott cited low viewership and said the network had not achieved “sustainable financial results.”
“Over the past several months, we worked hard to generate that interest in G4, but viewership is low and the network has not achieved sustainable financial results,” Scott wrote. “This is certainly not what we hoped for, and, as a result, we have made the very difficult decision to discontinue G4’s operations, effective immediately.“
Comcast Spectacor in July 2020 said it would reboot G4 TV, which NBCUniversal shut down in 2013 (after the network first launched in 2002). Russell Arons, the former Warner Bros.,...

Reanimated video game culture hub G4 will return to linear TV on November 16, with carriage deals in place on Verizon FiOS, Cox, Xfinity TV and Philo.
In announcing its return, the network also said it will also have a multi-year promotional and commercial partnership with Twitch. It also plans to continue putting out channel-specific content on social media and YouTube.
G4 originally launched in 2002 and was created by former Disney TV exec Charles Hirschhorn, who saw it as a successor to MTV in its ability to tap into youth culture. A number of notable personalities appeared on the network as hosts, among them Olivia Munn, Chris Hardwick, Kevin Pereira and Grace Helbig. G4 went dark in 2014 as its place on the dial was taken over by the Esquire Network, which would prove to be a short-lived branding exercise. The rebirthed G4 TV is kicking off a weekly content series — dubbed “B4G4” — to get fan feedback on the programming ahead of the gaming network’s official summer 2021 bow.
G4, which is being revived under the auspices of Comcast’s Spectator sports unit, will publish content under the B4G4 (“before G4”) banner on its YouTube and Twitch channels. Execs say the pre-release strategy will let them experiment with several formats, including original sketch comedy, game reviews, talent collaborations, and music and esports parodies. G4 will encourage fans to chime in on what they like — and don’t like — on the official Reddit r/g4tv forum.
In the B4G4 mix will be elements of the daily variety/news show “Attack of the Show!” and game-reviews show “X-Play,” two of G4’s most popular original series. Those are both returning to the network’s programming slate at launch,...

On Wednesday night, G4, the gaming network that aired from 2002-2014 and recently announced a revival, held a charity special that saw its previous lineup of hosts — Olivia Munn, Kevin Pereira, Adam Sessler, Morgan Webb, Kristin Adams and Blair Herter — reunite for a night of nostalgia and reminiscing.
But, at the very end of the special (benefiting G4’s multi-day Gravython effort), a hint at G4’s future, not its past, shown in the form of WWE star Xavier Woods, also known as Austin Creed, knocking down the door and saving them from a scripted dire situation. With that, G4 announced that Woods would be its first signed talent for the new version of the network.
For anyone following G4 since it announced its revival in July, however, the announcement probably didn’t come as too much as a surprise. Woods fought a vigorous social media campaign under the hashtag...

Long-dormant video game television network G4 appears to be teasing a comeback after sharing this video across various Twitter accounts related to the brand:
We never stopped playing. pic.twitter.com/fKJSvL9uaZ
— G4TV (@G4TV) July 24, 2020
The video above features a virtual tour through a Raiders of the Lost Ark-style warehouse loaded with memorabilia from G4’s past. While the video is loaded with various Easter eggs that will surely please long-time fans, the biggest takeaway comes at the end of the video when the year 2021 is accompanied by the message “We never stopped playing.”
Various people are taking to Twitter to weigh-in on this video, but the most interesting messages come from former G4 on-screen personalities. Former X-Play hosts Adam Sessler and Morgan Webb seemed surprised by this announcement, with Webb hilariously weighing in that she’s “impressed someone remembered the password to the Twitter.”

Updated: After nearly six years sitting in mothballs, the G4 video-game TV network is coming back — with some kind of relaunch next year by Comcast.
On Friday, the Twitter accounts of G4TV and G4’s Attack of the Show! and X-Play, two popular shows on the network, both posted the same cryptic teaser video, captioned with “We never stopped playing.” The video culminates with the numerals “2021.”
IGN, the game and entertainment publication owned by j2 Global’s Ziff Davis, also posted a version of the video (two minutes before the G4 account did). The teasers were timed for Comic-Con@Home, the first virtual streaming edition of the annual fan convention.

Lionsgate and Comic-Con International have teamed up to create a new video-on-demand streaming platform called Comic-Con HQ.
Last year, they announced that Comic-Con HQ was in the works and yesterday, word came out that a free beta for the streaming service will debut May 7, and the full version will be released sometime in June. The cost of the service is unknown at this time. Hopefully, this will give them enough time to work everything out before the main event in San Diego actually begins in July.
Here are some definite features the service will provide: original series (scripted and unscripted), with one of those being the series Kings of Con; two roundtable discussion shows, one featuring female perspective of pop culture; and a 1:1 interview series from Adam Sessler (X-Play).
As for coverage of the con, not much has been verified as to what the service will actually host. We...

A new streaming service is coming over the summer, when Lionsgate and the people behind Comic-Con join forces to create Cchq! The result sounds a lot like a former cable TV channel. Come inside for more details.
For those of you new to the cable scene, there was once a TV channel dedicated to nerds. It was known as G4. G4 housed a plethora of amazing shows like the original Japanese Ninja Warrior, X Play, and Attack of the Show. After some epic years, the channel was cancelled and changed to Esquire, which is still a good channel but anywhere near as great as G4. Now, it seems like Lionsgate and Comic-con are coming together to form something very similar.
Below is the complete Press Release of the service!

Ever wanted to play a good Friday The 13th game? Well Kickstarter might make it possible.
Friday The 13th: The Game has hit Kickstarter and is sitting at a little over $50k at the time of writing this. The developers are asking for $700k to make it a reality, and you have 31 days left to make it happen.
The game revolves around being a 1 vs 7 online title where one person gets to be Jason hunting down the weak camp visitors. There are moments where you can attack Jason, but the game will not encourage it.
Adam Sessler, former game journalist from G4, is also helping raise awareness of the project and hopes to see it come to light.
The game was actually already being made and was in project stages when the concept came to light, then the studio behind Friday The 13th contacted the developer and offered to team up with branding.

Over the past several months I’ve watched with amazement as the Kickstarter darling console, the Ouya, blazed a trail held together with twine, banding wire, and dubious PR. This isn’t a surprise in itself as Kickstarter has been known to be the spawning chamber of dubious products (in addition to quality ones), but what’s perplexing is how the mainstream gaming media has swallowed everything the Ouya team and the face of the project, Julie Uhrman, has been spoon-feeding them since July of 2012. In its Kickstarter campaign alone, the Ouya, based on nothing more than carefully airbrushed mock-up art and lofty dreams, managed to raise over $8.5 million from over 60,000 backers, shattering all prior records for Kickstarter funding including Chris Roberts’ ambitious Star Citizen.

Kratos, anti-hero of the upcoming God of War: Ascension, has never been known to hold back. Hell, he decapitated an Olympian god with his bare hands and gutted a titan from the inside, spilling guts and gallons of blood without a nanosecond of hesitation. So it’s only natural that God of War developers Sony Santa Monica want to ratchet up the brutality in order to avoid the dreaded been-there-done-that syndrome. Unfortunately, reaching that goal meant striking the nerve of many gamers and press members, but the uproar isn’t even stemming from the violence.
Just as a heads up, the next paragraph might have minor spoilers, so read at your own caution!
Now, it’s a no-brainer that Kratos will absolutely triumph over almost all his major opponents, given that God of War: Ascension is a prequel. In one of his encounters with a major female character though, Kratos...

Get ready for a lot of "Party Down" reruns and cooking shows as the rebranded network kills all video game-related programming for shows targeting "the modern male" according to The Hollywood Reporter.
After the defection/exit of Adam Sessler in April and Kevin Pereira in May of last year, and the September announcement that the network would try to attract the "sophisticated male" viewer, it seemed likely that cable's brief experiment with a channel dedicated to video games was coming to a close. It's not like we were expecting some kind of "G4 2.0" at this point, but it's nonetheless disappointing to have what THR's piece is effectively describing as Bravo for the obsessively-groomed male.
Back in September, G4's owners, NBC-Universal, promised to stay true to the network's gaming/tech roots, but that's clearly not in the cards, with such programming as the Drew Barrymore-produced underground cooking show "Knife...

Video games and violence has become, yet again, another hot button topic as of late, which has prompted some of the most ridiculous statements we've heard from politicians so far (including one made today). In the media, the game industry and gamers on the whole can't seem to catch a break, but during an interview with Fox News, Adam Sessler sets some people straight.
Though many remember Sessler for his goofy antics on X-Play, he's one of the more intelligent speakers when it comes to video games around (he's intelligent in general). He speaks with clarity, sound logic, and experience that's hard to discount...all which he brings to bear during this interview with Fox News. Fox News is somewhat notorious for blaming video games and gamers when bad things happen, so it's nice to watch Sessler talk so rationally and convincingly with them.

Title: Noobz Director: Blake Freeman Starring: Jason Mewes, Blake Freeman, Matt Shively, Zelda Williams, Moises Arias, Jon Gries, Richard Speight Jr., Darly Craig, Lin Shaye, Rick Overton, Casper Van Dien, Mindy Sterling, Bill Bellamy, Adam Sessler An across-the-board comedic misfire that lamely tries to hitch its trailer to the $17-billion-a-year videogaming industry, “Noobz” trades entirely in familiar clichés, and seems to regard its mere existence as a triumph to be shared by all. A wearying stinker unredeemed by a handful of brave, game, small supporting turns, multi-hyphenate Blake Freeman’s film is kind of like a cross between “Road Trip,” “Empire Records,” “The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters” and the modern-day videogame comedy that Kevin [ Read More ]

Out of the hundreds of popular gaming channels on YouTube, there may not be a savvier one than Revision3's Rev3Games. Some are funnier, some have a better screen presence, and some are simply more expansive; however, when it comes to intelligent, well-reasoned game commentary and analysis, Rev3Games can't be beat. The gaming network's level of cogent discussion is high enough that a 14 minute video featuring nothing more than three contributors sitting around a table and talking is a worthwhile watch. The video, an entry in Rev3Games' Casual Friday series, features correspondents Adam Sessler, Max Scoville, and Tara Long drinking champagne (aud lang syne!) and picking a Game of the Year from among their personal favorites

Back in May, the Discovery Channel acquired the thriving Revision3 network. When we talked to Rev3 CEO Jim Louderback about the acquisition, he was quiet on the subject of collaborative productions. "There are a lot of opportunities for collaboration, he said, "but we haven’t started talking about it yet. I’m sure we’ll soon get started to figure out what those collaborations may look like, and what online original iterations of their content we could help them create." Seven months later, a collaborative effort between Discovery and Revision3 has hit YouTube. Rev3Games host Anthony Carboni and Sex+ guru Laci Green are two of the hosts of DNews, a YouTube iteration of Discovery's own news coverage. Together with the third host, Discovery News writer Trace Dominguez, Carboni and Green are bringing a scientific and geeky spin to mainstream news items. Several episodes have already been posted, including an...

A while ago, Adam Sessler of G4’s X-Play fame announced he was leaving the company and the show altogether. Many fans were in outrage. Not so much at Sessler himself, but more so at the television channel. You see, G4 has been going down a spiraling destruction course for quite a while now.
I personally cannot pinpoint exactly when this started, but I would assume it was around the time Olivia Munn decided to move on, and also around the time when the station started playing nonstop re-runs of Cops and Cheaters. Others would say that the channel was doomed from the start, when it initially merged with TechTV. But nevertheless the fact that we are losing more and more of our favorite geek/gamer programming is making people very sad (me included).
But now Sessler has re-emerged on another show, but you will not find this on your cable provider.

Revision3's Rev3Games has quickly become one of the most likeable and entertaining gaming news teams on the Internet. The channel's three hosts--Tara Long, Max Scoville, and Anthony Carboni--recently made news by hosting a 24-hour gaming marathon for charity. Today, that terrific trio became a fearsome foursome. Revision3 has announced that veteran gaming host Adam Sessler will join the network as an executive producer, where he will step in as a regular contributor to Rev3Games. Sessler made a name for himself as a host of the humorous video game reviews show X-Play. Sessler was a host for over 14 years on X-Play, and he followed the show from TechTV to G4, where he and co-host Morgan Webb were a popular pair. Sessler left G4 in 2012, and by moving to Rev3Games he will be reunited with several of his former TechTV colleagues, including HD Nation and Tekzilla...

"Attack Of The Show!" has been cancelled.
According to TV Guide, two of G4's most popular shows will not be returning after December with "X-Play" being nixed as well. The network, which is undergoing a makeover, is sad to see both shows go.
"'Attack of the Show' and 'X-Play' have been important for G4, and we want to acknowledge the creative people who have helped inspire and showcase the phenomenon of gamer culture," G4 Media general manager Adam Stotsky said. "With more than 3,000 episodes aired between them, we have more than enough great material to honor these innovators and their amazing contributions as we bring both shows to a close."
According to a press release, the network is being rebranded and will "move into a more upscale, sophisticated guy TV space" with the possibility of being named "G4Men."

The network made it official today that production on the long-running shows is shutting down at the end of the year. Attack Of The Show and X-Play helped define G4‘s gamer-culture focus and launched careers for the likes of Olivia Munn and Chris Hardwick, amassing close to 3000 episodes to date. They also provided wall-to-wall coverage of Comic-Con and E3 — two events right in the network’s young-male demo wheelhouse. X-Play launched in 2003 on what was then known as TechTV; Attack followed in 2005. Here’s the network’s release about farewell plans for the shows, which will air original episodes through 2012: Los Angeles, CA, October 26, 2012 – Attack of the Show! and X-Play are the longest-running and defining series for G4 through its first decade. With the shows ending production at the end of 2012, G4 is getting set to showcase the landmark series as they wind down their long runs on the network.

Both TV series will end after several years of success on the G4 channel as the network undergoes a drastic makeover in 2013. Both Attack of the Show and X-Play will run new episodes and tributes to classic episodes through December until both end their long runs. Kevin Pereira and Olivia Munn both started out on G4's Attack of The Show until leaving to pursue other projects. Munn has starred in several TV series and films while Pereira who has most recently left as host on Aots, is working on projects under his company Super Creative. X-Play host Adam Sessler also left G4 earlier this year after some disagreements, despite being an integral part of growing the brand since it's humble beginnings on TechTV nearly 10 years ago. G4 has announced that they will no longer produce "Attack of the Show!" and "X-Play" beyond 2012. With upwards of 1,700 and 1,300 episodes, respectively, "Attack of the Show!" and "X-Play" defined the gamer culture for a generation of young men, and served as the launch pad for prominent personalities including Kevin Pereira, Olivia Munn, Chris Hardwick and Adam Sessler. Guests James Cameron, Ryan Reynolds, Jimmy Fallon, William Shatner, Sasha Baron Cohen and Joseph Gordon-Levitt are among the notables who got their geek on. The shows also pioneered live-from-the-floor coverage of the two most important conventions in the game culture universe: San Diego Comic-Con and E3. NBC Universal’s popular television channel G4 will be undergoing some big changes over the next year. Variety broke news of the decade old channel planning to rebrand its geek-centric network in a direction similar to the men’s magazine GQ. The purpose of this new direction is to aim for a more sophisticated look while keeping to its roots as a gaming and tech channel. The remodeling of the channel and possible name change is expected sometime early 2013.
Launched in 2002, G4 has been struggling with keeping a consistent viewership since its transition from TechTV. Over the past five years, the channel has catered itself more towards the SpikeTV crowd, airing programs such as Cops and Cheaters, both unrelated to their geek culture demographic. Although, its long-running pop culture program Attack of the Show! and American Ninja Warrior have been successful. In addition, several high-profile employees have left the network earlier this year,...

Variety reports that pop-culture channel G4 -- the go-to place for video game, comic book, geeky tech, and other cool stuff that fanboys and fangirls love -- is now getting a swanky, "guy-centric" makeover, courtesy of owners NBCUniversal. Here's the scoop according to Variety (who started the "GQ" comparison that so many news sites have picked up):
"The NBCUniversal-owned cabler is undergoing a rebranding, according to sources, that could involve a name change and take G4 in a direction reminiscent of GQ, the magazine for the "modern male" whose interests span beyond the dorm room or messy bachelor pad. The guy-centric net is mulling a more sophisticated look while remaining true to its tech and vid game roots."

Video game journalists don’t often write articles about others in their field, but in this case we seem to be making an exception.

Bollywod actor Prashant Chawla played a gay role in the film Jhootha Hi Sahi, and has been flooded with TV offers ever since. But it doesn't mean he's going to go back to the gay well: "I am looking forward to doing more films and a few projects are in the pipeline too. But I am clear about one thing - I don't want to repeat any of my roles and get typecast to a specific genre." Below you can listen as The Brian Lehrer Show discusses the history and future of gay superheroes in comic books.
If you're watching RuPaul's Drag Race on the U.S. East Coast tonight, head to LogoTV.com at 10 Pm and chat live with guest judge Johnny Weir about the episode. United States of Tara returns to Showtime on Monday, March 28th,...

Well, It Was That Kind Of Best.Gay.Week.Ever!
I have to confess that when I sat down to write last week's Bgwe! column, it was a little hard to focus on the "Best" part of the equation. What with all of the news about gay teen suicides along with the usual doses of homophobia and asshattery, it was hard to be in a good mood. But I managed to avoid being unduly negative and focused on the good stuff.
But at least it seemed like there were some actual positive changes coming out of the terrible tragedies of Tyler Clementi and the other gay teens we've lost recently. Unfortunately, we then we learned about the horrific beating and torture of three gay men in New York. And that was followed by this horrible video (actually filmed four years ago) of the New York Yankee fans known as the...

“Rage – Goddess, sing the rage of Peleus’ son Achilles, murderous, doomed, that cost the Achaeans countless losses, hurling down to the House of Death so many sturdy souls, great fighters’ souls, but made their bodies carrion, feasts for the dogs and birds, and the will of Zeus was moving toward its end.” –Homer, The Iliad
This is the first line from Homer’s timeless poem The Iliad. He states the theme of the entire work in the first word: rage. Rage is also the title of a new game, recently given a 2011 release date, by its developer id. Yes, “id” is the name of the developer. And since id was undoubtedly clever enough named itself after the theories of Dr. Freud, I must assume that they also know about Homer and have thus titled Rage after this opening line of The Iliad. If you disagree with me you’re a moron.
