James C. Nicola, whose tenure as artistic director of Off Broadway’s New York Theatre Workshop included the development of such prominent stage works as Rent, Once, Hadestown, What the Constitution Means to Me, Slave Play and David Bowie’s Lazarus, will leave the post next year, the company announced today.
“In July of 2022, I will reach the age of 72,” Nicola said in a statement. “In my mind, that has always been the moment to interrupt whatever patterns there might be in my life, and to leap off a cliff into reinvention. So that is my plan.”
Nicola will depart Nytw on June 30, 2022. He has been the artistic director since 1988.
Under his stewardship, Nytw has cemented a reputation as an important force in the production and development of new theater work, many of which have gone on to Broadway runs. A partial list of important works developed at the Nytw includes Jonathan Larson’s Rent,...

Imagine a vampire story where the undead are really nice people and would never think to bite anyone. That pretty much sums up the suspense and excitement delivered by the new musical “Tuck Everlasting,” which opened Tuesday at Broadway’s Broadhurst Theatre. If immortality is so awful here on earth, why do people pray for it before they die? Neither the musical nor its source material, Natalie Babbitt’s much-lauded children’s book, asks that question. The show’s first act, as written by Claudia Shear and Tim Federle, finds it necessary to ask all sorts of other less interesting questions.

At its heart, storytelling is about immortalizing. The upcoming Broadway musical “Tuck Everlasting,” written by Claudia Shear and Tim Federle, with music and lyrics by Nathan Tysen and Chris Miller, addresses this literally. Beginning previews March 31, the show brings to life onstage Natalie Babbitt’s novel about an immortal family and the young girl who befriends them. In the intimate environment of the Black Box Theatre at Nyu Tisch School of the Arts—10 days before the show opens to its first audience—composers and graduates of Nyu Tisch’s musical theater writing program Miller and Tysen, and book writer Federle discussed the process of adapting a work of fiction as a musical. Additionally, they performed excerpts from the score and reflected on the tricky nature of the business. With youth-oriented Broadway adaptations such as “School of Rock the Musical” and “Fun Home” on the Great White Way, the balancing act...

Claudia Shear's new play, Restoration, takes us to contemporary Florence with the middle-aged art restorer who wins the prize of restoring Michelangelo's famous statue of David for its 500th birthday celebration. This job is certainly a coup in the art world, and Giulia, the heroine, works hard on her task, clambering up and down the scaffolding, arguing with the handsome museum guard, fighting to use the methods she has invented, resenting the press, ignoring the tourists -- in short, she connects to the high art of the Renaissance and gives herself over, heart and soul, to David. He is young, he is heroic, he is marble, he is beautiful.
But what does one do with a play that is neither very good nor very bad? Describe it with kindness, I suppose.
The play is entertaining, witty at times, clever in its staging, but essentially tame. It reminds me of...

Which has happened to me three times now!!! And which is So strange because I've been a fan of both since their first films. Why do I keep doing this.
