Beasts of Burden: Levi’s Slapstick Heist Film Runs Amuck
For his sophomore film, Israeli director Reshef Levi inserts Patrick Stewart alongside the likes of Sasson Gabai, Moni Moshonov, and Moshe Ivgy for a comedic bank heist in Hunting Elephants. While there’s mild amusement to be had amongst this group of sassy old codgers, the whole endeavor feels a bit forced. Snippets of characters directly addressing the camera frequently distract as Levi and co-writer Regey Levi cut across timespans in attempt to give the scenario added depth. Reinforcing stereotypes rather than playing with them, Levi’s broad scenario feels tonally akin to something like Last Vegas (2013) but entrenched in more archaic stagnation.

During the 1980’s camp related movies seem to spike the box office interest. Everything from Friday the 13th Summer Camp Nightmare and The Burning on one side of the spectrum to Meat Balls and its sequels on another could generate an audience and hopefully a modest profit. Every kid was going to summer camp and either getting laid, drunk or drugged or killed. Sounds like camp was a real crap shoot to me. Having attended summer camp only once and only for three days, I can say that my experience was less than stellar. We sang ridiculous religious songs, ate shitty ham steak and some kid in our cabin stepped on a nail, bleeding all over the place and causing quite the semi-traumatic moment. I Survived Summer Camp In The 1980’s. How? I never went back. My kids… never going to summer camp. No reason to tempt the fates, however...

We have come to the end of the Stepfather Retrospective Series which means we’ve arrived at the 2009 remake simply entitled The Stepfather and o(pens with the same scene essentially and then… the movie just has it’s way with you). I want to be absolutely clearly that Jeff and I do not outright hate remakes. All movies deserve to be screened (well… nearly all movies), and we tried to give this one a fair shake. Think we liked it? Did you see it and enjoy it? What’s your ranking for the entire Stepfather series (1-3 and the remake)? Think we’ll get a re-imagining called The Stepmother? The Dead Air guys go through all of this and include an in depth discussion of the Remake.

A star-studded fundraising gala last weekend at Vancouver’s spiffy Sutton Place Hotel has raised over $90,000 for research in Hunter Syndrome, a degenerative disease in children.
The formal event, called the Once Upon a Cure Gala, was attended by a host of familiar faces from TV sci-fi and fantasy, including Sanctuary‘s Amanda Tapping, Ryan Robbins, Robin Dunne, Christopher Heyerdahl, Gillian Horvath and Damian Kindler, Supernatural‘s Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles, and Robert Carlyle and Julia Benson from Stargate Universe.
Carlyle is currently appearing in the ABC series Once Upon a Time. Edward Kitsis and Steve Pearlman, who have been executive producers on that show, were also big supporters of the event.

William Shatner at the 2011 Calgary Comic and Entertainment Expo (image copyright Michael Simpson)
With much mystery still surrounding the follow-up to J.J. Abrams Star Trek reboot (we khan’t bring ourselves to call it Star Trek 2), one question that keeps going around is whether William Shatner will be making an appearance as the original (or should that be alternate?) James T. Kirk.
‘No,’ is the word from the man himself. Shatner said as much during a Q&A session hosted by Canada’s Space channel at last weekend’s Calgary Comic and Entertainment Expo. He was answering a fan’s question about whether he thought he would be in the next movie.
“I’ve become an acquaintance of J.J. Abrams—what a talented guy—and he never mentioned, ‘Get yourself ready; you’re going to be in the next movie,’… [So] no.”

Christopher Judge talking to the audience at the Calgary Expo (image copyright Michael Simpson).
Christopher Judge, who played the alien character Teal’c on 10 seasons of Stargate Sg-1 and its two spin-off movies, has teased fans of the series with news that he has been cast in a ‘huge’ upcoming movie. Judge revealed the news today during his Q&A session at the Calgary Comic and Entertainment Expo.
“I shouldn’t even say anything,” Judge told the Expo crowd. “Ok, I can’t tell you what. There’s gonna be a big announcement in the next couple of weeks. So I just got cast in a huge film.”
The news brought a cheer from the audience but Judge did not reveal further details. His comments suggested, however, that it would be a genre film.
“I can’t say anything publicly until the studio makes their official announcement, which means not until the deal is signed,...

Way back in mid-September of last year yours truly reported that Syfy's Battlestar Galactica spin-off, Caprica, was facing serious script problems, shortfalls and forced hiatuses, and that the skein's future could be in peril. While many disputed my reporting, in hindsight it now seems as though the writing was truly on the wall (though sadly not on the page).
Since that time the series has had a difficult time gaining a foothold with its intended audience. Early last February our own Michael Simpson reported that the series' ratings were steadily falling. Here's what he said, as sourced from The Hollywood Reporter:
The Syfy broadcast drew 1.6 million viewers … the even lower ratings for Episode Two were a surprise. The show's audience dropped by about 12% to 1.4 million viewers. They fell even further to 1.1 million for the episode that aired last Friday.
Things didn't get better, and as of today, Syfy Channel...

The first image an audience seated for a screening of The Runaways, the new movie about the rise and fall of Joan Jett’s first band, sees is the bloodied leg of a young girl who has just hit womanhood. As she and her sister scamper across a fast food parking lot to clean up and change from school girl clothes to more sexy fare, the viewer gets a clear picture. This is a movie about the early twinges of girl power, about the girls that came before 'The Bad Girls Club', about girls that know how to get down and dirty. But mostly, it’s a movie we’ve probably seen many times before.
The Runaways is the story of two very different girls—rocker-from-birth Joan Jett (mulleted Kristen Stewart) and David Bowie-loving sex kitten Cherie Currie (Farrah Fawcetted Dakota Fanning). While Joan dreams of breaking...

Two shows were out of the mix again last week, Fringe and Dollhouse, both of which will be absent this coming week as well.
Meanwhile, for the shows that did air first-run episodes this past week, the spotlight was on Thursday, which was a bit disappointing for ratings. Fox's airing of the World Series between the New York Yankees and the Philadelphia Phillies dominated the airwaves, garnering a 10.6/17 share, according to Fast National ratings from The Nielsen Co. By comparison, even the reality juggernaut Survivor couldn't compete with America's favorite pastime, returning a 7.1/11 for its Survivor: Samoa iteration.
Both, however, finished well ahead of FlashForward, which is settling back down a bit. The ABC skein earned a 5.7 rating/9 share, matching the all time low it had back on Oct. 15. That's an eight percent drop from the previous week, and nine-and-a-half percent below its season average so far.

Albert Schultz, Founding Artistic Director of Soulpepper Theatre Company, today announced that the company's production of Parfumerie will run November 26 - December 24, 2009, at the Young Centre for the Performing Arts.
Soulpepper debuts a new adaptation of Miklós László's touching romantic comedy from Canadian writers Adam Pettle and Brenda Robins.
One of the world's most beloved stories, Parfumerie has inspired three movies (The Shop Around the Corner, The Good Old Summertime, and You've Got Mail) and one musical (She Loves Me). Set at Christmas time, two clerks in a Budapest perfume shop despise each other, while unknowingly exchanging love letters as anonymous penpals.
Morris Panych returns to Soulpepper (Blithe Spirit, 2007) to direct the unlikely pair of secret admirers, Patricia Fagan (Rosie) and Oliver Dennis (Azstalos), with Maev Beaty as Miss Ratz, Kevin Bundy as Kadash, Jeff Lillico as Arpad, Noah Reid as Jansic, Brenda Robins as Miss Molnar, Michael Simpson as Sipos,...

Our reviews for this past week are down a couple of shows, thanks primarily to baseball. Fringe was a no-show on account of the former, and Supernatural offered us a repeat of this season's premiere.
That said, we've got some new entries in the mix, which we'll be continuing as well. Blaine Kyllo chimes in with his thoughts on this past week's episodes of House, 30 Rock and Dollhouse (the latter of which returned to the airwaves after a one week absence).
With choices reduced on account of America's favorite pastime, viewers had a second look at shows they might have otherwise missed the first go-round, in their quest for something to watch, and this benefited FlashForward, which earned its best audience since its second week, picking up a 6.2 rating/10 share.
Meanwhile, according to the stats, Fringe, which has been a big ratings loser in its sophomore season, saw an uptick the week ending Oct.

Pete Burns has denied that he was arrested following a bust-up in central London, insisting that he was attacked by a violent fan. The former Dead Or Alive singer and husband Michael Simpson were driven home by police after an argument started in the early hours of Tuesday morning outside a Soho restaurant. "A member of the public kept persisting to take a picture of Pete Burns. When Pete declined, an argument between Pete and the guy started," a spokesperson told Metro. "Pete got up and walked away (more)...
