Severin’s October offerings include this investigation of Euro-weirdness curated with academic purpose and clarity by Kier-La Janisse, evoking the name of her book from 2012. The thesis is the representation of women in filmic horror — except that in these strange experiences, hysteria transforms into a liberating form of empowerment: Identikit, I Like Bats, Footsteps and The Other Side of the Underneath. Elizabeth Tayor and Florinda Bolkan are the top stars in the collection, two of which bear the cinematography of Vittorio Storaro. The final film is a totally different, experimental experience. Ms. Janisse’s introductions connect the dots for these filmworks that envigorate and disturb.

The artist’s life is essential viewing for anyone with an interest in British art, second-wave feminism or experimental cinema
Director Richard Kovitch’s documentary is essential viewing for anyone with a passing interest in either British art, second-wave feminism or experimental cinema from the mid-20th century. That’s because the film’s subject, the London-born artist Penny Slinger, slinked through all those realms, creating startling work in collage, film and theatre that was both quintessentially of its time and ahead of times to come, prefiguring themes that would crop up again in the shock imagery of YBAs in the 1990s and beyond.

For those unfamiliar with artist Penny Slinger, this documentary by writer/ director Richard Kovitch is an edifying low-glide over the controversial surrealist’s work and life. Starting serenely with old short film footage of a twenty something Penny sauntering solemnly across the lawn of what looks like a stately home, Kovitch propels us into an anarchic bombardment of stills from Slinger’s audacious work. This surreal salvo of images from paintings, films, sculptures and collages hits like a drug spiked slap or defective self-hypnosis video, but sets the tone perfectly for what’s to follow.
Out of the Shadows parades Penny’s art in movements and moments, parted by supers, until her disappearance from the scene at the end of the 1970s. The film first flits back to the late 1940s when Penny grew up in Streatham with a club foot and speech impediment. It also features interviews with her friends,...
