Idris Elba versus a giant lion is the best pitch ever for a film. "Beast" was released by Universal Pictures in August of 2022, but you'll be able to watch him battle the giant cat at home less than two months later.
All Idris Elba's recent widower Nate wanted to do was take his daughters to a game preserve in South Africa to see where their mother grew up, and they get attacked by a rogue lion. This man-versus-nature story is a simple one that takes inspiration from films like "Jaws" and "Jurassic Park," as our own Josh Spiegel said in his /Film review.
"Beast" is coming out on 4K Uhd, Blu-ray, and DVD, as well as Digital and streaming on Peacock. There are some fun extras on the home video side as well.
The thriller follows recently widowed Dr. Nate Daniels (Idris Elba) and his two teenage daughters (Iyana Halley...

In August 2017, Americans clashed in Charlottesville, Va., over the question of whether to remove a statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee. It was, unofficially speaking, a reenactment of the Civil War that divided this country 150 years earlier, and comedian-cum-filmmaker Cj Hunt was there to witness the standoff.
We all know what Trump said of those on both sides of the issue, but Hunt’s alternately amusing and enraging essay film “The Neutral Ground” goes beyond the surface debates to examine why some Southerners are so attached to their Civil War heroes. The answer, complicated though it may be, is tied up in the pernicious propaganda campaign known as the Lost Cause, which has enabled subsequent generations to rationalize (rather than reconcile/repair) the racism of their not-so-distant past.
“There are no Hitler statues in Germany today,” Rev. Jesse Jackson observed after the confrontation in Charlottesville turned violent. That tragedy...

Every so often, we get sequels that move a story forward, that enrich beloved characters and the world they inhabit, or that upends and deconstructs the first movie entirely. But most of the time, we get safe, stodgy, repetitive follow-ups like “Coming 2 America,” which goes out of its way to make sure that every joke from the first movie comes out to take another bow.
If there’s any gag from 1988’s “Coming to America” that director Craig Brewer can’t reprise or restage, he will literally roll the clip from the first movie so we can take it in all over again. This feels less like a movie and more like one of those reunion specials where the cast of a beloved old TV show returns to play their characters again, recreating their pratfalls and repeating their catchphrases.
Viewers who weren’t amused by “Coming to America” certainly...

Amazon has started to lay down the proverbial rose petals on which its high-profile pandemic-era theatrical refugee, Coming 2 America, will eventually walk; namely the first trailer for the 30+ years-awaited sequel to Eddie Murphy’s 1988 comedy classic.
The Paramount-produced film, once scheduled to hit theaters in August 2020, met a fate typical of the year 2020 this past October when the studio sold distribution rights to Amazon, which, after a recent delay, has scheduled the film to stream in March. Interestingly, the just-dropped trailer seems to indicate that the America to which Murphy’s Prince Akeem Joffer will once again come seems familiar—and by “familiar” we mean virtually unchanged from the first movie. Ironically, the intrinsically-2020 rollout of the film will contrast with an extremely-1988 aesthetic.
With that set, check out the Coming 2 America trailer just below.

Oprah Winfrey, The New York Times and Lionsgate are partnering on a series of feature films and television shows based on “The 1619 Project.”
The collaboration was announced Wednesday, nearly a year after the Times debuted “The 1619 Project” series to re-examine the legacy of slavery in the United States on the 400th anniversary of the first Africans’ arrival in Virginia. Nikole Hannah-Jones, who was the architect of the series, won a 2020 Pulitzer Prize for commentary.
“We took very seriously our duty to find TV and film partners that would respect and honor the work and mission of ‘The 1619 Project,’ that understood our vision and deep moral obligation to doing justice to these stories,” Hannah-Jones said. “Through every step of the process, Lionsgate and its leadership have shown themselves to be that partner, and it is a dream to be able to produce this work with Ms. Oprah Winfrey, a trailblazer and...
