One of the marketing trends today is for consumers to take a brand and make it their own. An example is the phenomenon of customizing phones. I’m sure that just about everyone you know has selected a cellphone case so that their phone has really become their phone. And a few years ago, I had a role in a Kia Soul marketing campaign. The big idea was that you, as a car owner, could customize the Soul in whatever way worked best for you. And there’s more of this brand customization in the future. Centennials, the group that comes after Millennials, are even more passionate about personalizing brands.
Geek Culture’s passionate fans already have their own personalized visions of popular entertainment brands and characters. They are a finicky bunch, especially when it comes to change. Long gone are the days when they blindly accepted reboots or revisions...

Kristen Wiig and Bill Hader take centre stage for The Skeleton Twins, a dark, funny comedy with plenty going for it...
While Bridesmaids allowed Kristen Wiig to provide a platform for herself as a lead, it might come as a surprise to find that her co-star here – Bill Hader – has never played one himself. Like Wiig, you may recognise him from Saturday Night Live or from myriad supporting and scene stealing roles in other comedies.
The Skeleton Twins sees Wiig and Hader play twins – Maggie and Milo - whose lives have not worked out as they'd hoped. After seeing each other for the first time in ten years, they rekindle their bond and try to support each other as their lives continue to fall apart. Due to their years of working together, Wiig and Hader’s relationship as brother and sister is hugely plausible. Aided by their comic abilities -...

Ever since the Planes-Tow Mater short film on Cars 2 and the first trailer for a Planes feature film, there was some small hope that this would be a fun expanded world of Cars taken to the skies. Once it was pegged as a direct-to-video release though, some worry started to settle into the air. Then it was noticeable that Pixar removed itself from the production, giving all the credit to Disney, but still marketing it “from Above the World of Cars.” That meant that Disney must have crunched the numbers of the potential licensing deals they could make and get kids (and their parents) to buy into. Unfortunately, Disney’s Planes should have stayed a DVD release.
Disney Animation has been hit or miss as both Bolt and Wreck-It Ralph were enjoyable and original. Like Ralph, John Lasseter was producing Planes, so there was some hope. Meanwhile, Pixar...

Ka-pow! Like a bludgeoning thump to the kisser, Kevin Conroy silenced industry rumours at the Dallas Comic-Con by confirming that he will indeed voice act for the upcoming prequel Batman: Arkham Origins. However, in a twist to the recent saga, Warner Bros. have confirmed Roger Craig Smith as Gotham’s caped crusader – which unmasks a rather pressing question: just how will Kevin Conroy feature in the studio’s upcoming game?
In taking up the Bat-mantle in the series’ third instalment, Craig Smith will only bolster his already impressive résumé – which includes Ezio and Chris Redfield of Assassin’s Creed and Resident Evil. With Craig Smith and Conroy now confirmed to be working alongside one another, perhaps the game will feature some form of non-linear narrative to encompass both voice actors? Who knows, but it opens some interesting avenues for the developing studio to extrapolate.

Embedded above is a five-minute clip from Craig Smith‘s underground movie classic, Psychedelic Glue Sniffin’ Hillbillies, which screened way back at the first ever Chicago Underground Film Festival in 1994. This clip truly has everything you could want: Cheap, junky Jesus art held as proudly as if it were the Mona Lisa; drunken basement ramblings with karate chops; beer-drinkin’, Martian mask-wearin’ good ol’ boys, roadkill, dancing old folks and more. Whew!
Back when I first discovered and posted up the lineup for the 1994 Cuff last month, I went in search of whatever happened to many of the films that screened, primarily looking to see if any were released on DVD. Not many, but some have been.
Psychedelic Glue Sniffin’ Hillbillies is being self-released by director Smith and you can buy a copy at the film’s official website. The DVD comes with director commentary, out-takes, other short films and more.

How awesome would it be to go pick up your mail every afternoon from a Star Wars X-Wing fighter mailbox! Apparently these little pictures don't do the five-foot wing span of Craig Smith's X-Wing mailbox justice. yes I said five-foot wing span!
I made this so long ago, it is actually in need of weathering repairs and repainting. I never expected it to survive vandalism or theft for half a decade. But at five feet long and a five foot wingspan, theft would be quite difficult. Everybody from letter carriers to pizza delivery go out of their way to say how much they like it. There is a street about 10 miles away where older guys have a mailbox rivalry with custom car, firetruck and airplane mailboxes, I should mail them a photo.
Here are a couple more photos to check out. This thing is so cool!
