As Hollywood’s historic double strike puts virtually all press and promotion opportunities centered around actors and writers on pause, personal publicists have been left in a lurch — forcing small and midsize PR firms to pivot their strategies to survive.
These firms are finding they need to shift to non-SAG-AFTRA clients and projects. And some will be forced to find partners or merge to stay in business, veteran publicists and experts tell TheWrap.
After the clock struck midnight on July 14, striking actors were restricted from participating in any media interviews or promotion of projects associated with an AMPTP company. While the rules are unclear regarding promotion for independent projects — with some indie productions landing interim agreements to continue filming — virtually all press has come to an abrupt halt,...

While at Roadside, Smith oversaw the pick-up and release of Oscar winner “The Cove,” Oscar nominee “Winter’s Bone,” and has worked on such releases as “Stories We Tell” and “Mud.” (I hope @roadsidetweets will turn up under another handle, as he's an hilarious tweeter.) One of his underlings has found himself in hot water, but the Cake Boss himself still has plenty of orders to fill for his upcoming season. Despite fondant-and-frosting whiz Remigio "Remy" Gonzalez being jailed on child-sex charges, shooting will go ahead as scheduled this fall on the popular pastry-themed reality series. "Production for Cake Boss is unchanged," Tlc spokesman Dustin Smith tells E! News. That's sweet news for fans. In fact, Cake Boss mastermind Buddy Valastro, owner of Carlo's Bake Shop in Hoboken, N.J., is also gearing up to host a spinoff series that will give Bravo's upcoming Top Chef: Just Desserts a run for its flour in the culinary-competition...

It's no overstatement to say that one of the most anticipated movies of this year's SXSW Film Conference is Joe Swanberg's latest work, Alexander the Last. One of SXSW's more prolific veteran directors, Swanberg has built his status at the festival up to the point where a new piece from him is an event - even more so with Alexander, the centerpiece of IFC's controversial new SXSW partnership. IFC Films has been the distributor for Swanberg's last few pictures and has done much of the legwork to build his popularity throughout the indie community.
But it wasn't until last Friday night when I was attending an authentic fried chicken restaurant in New York City's Korea Town that I realized just how far Swanberg's popularity had stretched into the outside world. While using the rest room, I happened to spot a piece of graffiti on the wall above the urinal.

L.A.-based Roadside Attractions has picked up domestic rights to Ramin Bahrani's drama "Goodbye Solo," one of a dozen international territories to land the Venice fest prizewinner at Afm.
Set in the director's hometown of Winston-Salem, N.C., "Solo" tracks the unlikely, life-changing friendship between a taciturn Southern good ol' boy (Red West) and an extroverted Senegalese taxi driver (Souleymane Sy Savane). It marks the feature debut of Savane and West, a member of Elvis Presley's fabled "Memphis Mafia."
Roadside will give the film a national platform rollout this spring. "Although his first two films ('Man Push Cart' and 'Chop Shop') firmly established Ramin as one of America's most important young filmmakers, 'Solo' is the kind of thinking-man's crowd-pleaser that's going to break him to a much wider audience," said Roadside acquisitions director Dustin Smith, who negotiated the deal with domestic rep Cinetic Media.

"Everybody Wants to Be Italian," or at least that's the bet Roadside Attractions is making.
The indie distributor has acquired domestic rights to Jason Todd Ipson's raucous romantic comedy from producers James Huntsman and Jaime Burke of Asgaard Entertainment.
Cerina Vincent ("Two and a Half Men") plays an Italian-American woman from Boston's North End who is set up on a blind date with a lovelorn fishmonger (Jay Jablonski) by his two good pals (John Enos III and John Kapelos). Convinced she will never fall for a non-Italian, he takes desperate measures to fake his ethnicity.
Penny Marshall makes a cameo in the film, which was inspired by Ipson's experience living in Boston, where he met his Italian wife. A Sept. 5 platform release is planned.
Ipson directed the Lionsgate/After Dark Films horror feature "Unrest," also produced by Asgaard.
Roadside's Dustin Smith negotiated the deal with Todd Slater, who repped the producers.
