Project is debut feature from the director of award-winning short April 4th 1968.
Paris-based Mpm Films and Greek production company Blonde Sa are teaming on French director Myriam Gharbi’s debut feature Pirates.
The semi-autobiographical tale revolves around a rebellious young woman from a tough outer-city suburb who is given a new lease of life when she hooks up with two anarchical squatters – Z and Manos - after serving time in prison on drug-dealing charges.
It was among nine upcoming productions presented at the Sam Spiegel International Film Lab pitching event on Friday.
Mpm producer Claire Gadéa, who is lead producing out of France, previously produced Philippe Lacôte’s Run, which was also developed at the lab before going on to premiere in Un Certain Regard at Cannes in 2014.
Gadéa has also already secured development money from France’s National Cinema Centre (Cnc).

Exclusive: Upcoming Filipino genre picture tackles global immigration debate.
Taipei-based film and TV powerhouse MandarinVision has boarded Malaysian-born, Philippines-based director Bradley Liew’s upcoming horror picture Motel Acacia, set against a brothel with a sinister mission to bump off migrant workers.
Producer Bianca Balbuena of Manila-based Epicmedia Productions revealed the deal at the Sam Spiegel Film Lab pitching event on the fringes of Jerusalem Film Festival on Friday.
Balbuena said it was the fruit of a meeting with MandarinVision’s head of film Yeh Jufeng at Taipei Film Festival earlier this month. “She wants to support Bradley Liew because she thinks he’s one of the new talents of southeast Asian cinema and the reason I am here right now is because I believe the same thing,” said Balbuena.
In Liew’s words, “Motel Acacia is about a young half-Philippine, half-American man who is brought over to the West by his tyrannical Caucasian father and groomed...

What do you get when you add together Spike Jonze, Jill Garvey from HBO’s “The Leftovers,” Sia’s choregrapher, and multiply it by Sam Spiegel and Ape Drums (featuring Assassin)? One of the more thrilling perfume commercials in recent memory. Yes, Jonze’s latest directorial effort is technically an ad for Kenzo perfume, but the three-minute “ad” is more music video than anything else, with just one mention of the product ostensibly being hawked, right at the very end. Before crossing over to making bizarre but incredibly human films, Spike Jonze made his name directing skating videos, music videos, and commercials. He’s returned to that last format with an ad for Kenzo perfume that is a great short film (and, bonus, doesn’t really feel like it’s hocking perfume) centered around a bored lady leaving a dreary gala to break out into spontaneous dance.
The actress at the center of it is Margaret Qualley (of The Nice Guys), who used to be a dancer before transitioning to acting. Her incredibly emotive moves and expressions makes this short feel alive and fresh, spontaneous yet carefully choreographed as well. The choreography was done by Ryan Hueffington (who did Sia’s “Chandelier” video), and the song that puts the boogie in Qualley’s step is “Mutant Brain” by Jonze’s brother, Sam Spiegel. It’s an effervescent break from the...

It would seem that at the moment, Joaquin Phoenix is drawn to stories of oddball relationships. Last year, he found himself entwined with Philip Seymour Hoffman in a father/son, mentor/master union as part of Paul Thomas Anderson's "The Master." And a year later he's back, this time romancing the voice of an operating system (really) in Spike Jonze's "Her." And yet, within that premise is film that we called "disarmingly funny, insightful and empathetic," and that we, well, fell in love with. It features a unique vision, tender soul and wouldn't you know it, a great soundtrack too. We got our hands on the full list of songs in the flick, and in addition to a couple of new (instrumental) Arcade Fire cuts, the movie features The Breeders, a duet between virtual lovers Scarlett Johansson (who voices the Os) and Joaquin Phoenix, some old timey jams...

The Jackass 3D soundtrack. The hapless propensity of Star Trek’s the Borg to be repeatedly thwarted in their nefarious schemes by a gaggle of middle-aged men dressed in various shades of long john may have made a mockery of their frequent proclamations of “Resistance is futile,” but there is one tribe for whom that catchphrase is not a hollow cry. Yes, while you can coldly intellectualise the Jackass gang and their boneheaded, bone-breaking antics from afar, you can sneer at how base it all is, turn your well-read, highfalutin nose up at Johnny Knoxville and his disciples, the fact is that when you watch a man sat on a portaloo being fired skywards on a bungee rocket, as happens in the trailer for Jackass 3D, there is no way to stop the laughter. Literally no way. You’d have more chance of wearing a moustache and no shirt combo...

When I found out the "Jackass 3D" soundtrack was not in 3D, I was like wtf? But that's all right, with the staggering amount of drugs and alcohol consumed by some of the bands Epitaph dug up here, there are sure to be some special effects just by association.
Old punk and metal acts like Boston's Gang Green, Twisted Sister, London's Cock Sparrer along with the Smut Peddlers -- who were featured on both previous "Jackass" films -- dominate the vibe of the soundtrack. But there's some weird gems like 70's folk hit "Brand New Key" by Melanie (below) and The Blaster's "I'm Shakin'."
Weezer's new single "Memories" off their just released, "Hurley, gets the special treatment with a video featuring Johnny Knoxville and crew (below). The Yeah Yeah Yeahs increasingly impressive, Karen O, covers the honorary theme song (it was in both prior Jackass films) "If You're Gonna Be Dumb,...
