Maya Forbes’ big-screen memoir, Infinitely Polar Bear, is a movie about family that is also sweet enough to be a family film. Dedicated to the writer/director’s parents, it is one of the more accessible titles available that deals with manic depression and mental illness. However, that should not be a slight against it. An outstanding cast, led by a superb Mark Ruffalo and scene-stealing turns from the two newcomers who play his stubborn-headed daughters, elevate the film’s somewhat digestible portrait of bipolar disorder.
Ruffalo plays Cameron Stuart, a free-spirited kid raised with a silver spoon who was later kicked out of Harvard. On campus in the late 1960s, he met the bohemian Maggie (Zoe Saldana), with whom he soon started a family. Their two daughters, Amelia (Imogene Wolodarsky) and Faith (Ashley Aufderheide), have learned how to react to a manic-depressive dad. They do not mind when Cameron...

Proof that fine actors giving strong performances are not always enough to save a movie, Maya Forbes' Infinitely Polar Bear seems too preoccupied with its 70s period setting and zany family antics to pay more than vague lip service to its central theme of manic depression. As a result, Infinitely Polar Bear is a frivolous and slight affair, not without its charms, but devoid of any real purpose.Apparently based at least in part on writer-director Maya Forbes' own experiences, Infinitely Polar Bear is the story of an unconventional American family in 1970s Massachusetts. Cameron Stuart (Mark Ruffalo) comes from a wealthy New England family, but was diagnosed in the late 60s with manic depression. His African-American girlfriend Maggie (Zoe Saldana) married him regardless, and fast...

Batgirl: Endgame #1 is a unique little one-shot brought to us by the folks at DC Comics. Although Cameron Stewart and Brendan Fletcher are credited with writing the story, their actual work is only represented by one word bubble which contains “Phew” and some “HaHa’s” floating in the city air. It’s 20 pages of Bengal’s artwork telling the tale in gorgeously colored illustrations.
In Batgirl: Endgame #1, there’s a mob of Jokerized madmen in Gotham City. They’re determined to spread the virus into the world beyond. The crazed crowd is going to have to get past Batgirl first!
Entitled “The Battle for Burnside,” the one-shot is a fine example of the art of telling a story through the use of images and not narrative. It makes for a contemporary and youthful experience by using cell phone emoticons, computers, signage, and texting. The whole book is a reflection of...

Barbara Gordon is big news. Right now Batgirl is kicking up a right load of fuss thanks to an ill-judged variant cover for an upcoming issue of her solo book – artist Rafael Albuquerque’s Joker tie-in recalled the classic story The Killing Joke, which saw the Clown Prince Of Crime shoot and cripple the heroine, with some implied sexual assault thrown in for bad measure. It’s a creepy, haunting image.
Which is also totally wrong for a book which has fought to escape the dark history of the character, pitched directly at a younger, hipper and more female audience than your average comic book. Smartly, DC and Albuquerque decided to cancel that particular variant. It was probably the right call, despite what a vocal minority might tell you.
Anyway, the whole episode has thrown a larger spotlight than Batgirl’s had on her for a while now.

Even though she’s only been drawing comics for about a year, Babs Tarr’s artistic revamp of the Batgirl title and the character in general has made her one of comics’ rising stars. She discarded the armor or spandex of past costumes for a fashion forward costume featuring yellow Doc Martens and a snap cape that is cosplay friendly as well as reintegrating the classic cape, cowl, and Bat-symbol for a new generation of a fans. But she’s done much more than co-design the coolest superhero costume of 2014 by bringing her design sense as an illustrator to the denizens of Gotham City and Barbara’s new home of Burnside, which is basically the Williamsburg of the DC Universe.
But before she got the Batgirl gig at DC Comics, Babs Tarr was (and still is) a full-time freelance illustrator. She also did a lot of fun, striking fan art for things like Sailor Moon,...

So here we are at the end of 2014, which is the time for media folk to opine about the best and the worst of the year in all the different areas of our overcrowded, put-upon lives. So though I rarely think of myself as part of the media folk crowd, I’ll include me in that description for this column, since all of you have so kindly considered my words, thoughts, judgments, attitudes, and so forth important enough to peruse over the last twelve months.
So here we go, in no particular order, and not divided into “best” and “worst”…
I applaud Marvel Comics’ writer G. Willow Wilson (great name, by the way, so alliterative!) and artist Adrian Alphona for introducing the comics world to Kamala Khan, an American Muslim teenager from Jersey City, New Jersey. Kamala’s parents and family are traditional, observant Muslims (for the most part), but...

Every week I am sent a package full of comics and graphic novels I’m not able to read from my pals at DC Comics. No matter what I do, I can’t seem to find the time for everything I’d like to take in on an entertainment level. My plan is to showcase these books once a week in an ongoing column. If there’s anything I need to say about one of the titles, I’ll gladly add my two cents worth in. DC’s been good to me over the years and I want to do my best to promote their many excellent books they publish every month.
Just in case you’re not a big comic book consumer, let me give you some quick facts. All new comic books and graphic novels are published on the Wednesday of every week. Also, Vertigo is an imprint...

After taking in DC Comics’ latest issue of Batgirl, I regret not having jumped onboard a month earlier. Issue #35 launched the series back in time to the younger years of Barbara Gordon’s battle against crime. I can’t begin to tell you what a breath of fresh air the creative team of Cameron Stewart, Brendon Fletcher, and Babs Tarr has contributed to the monthly title.
Barbara Gordon is settling in and eager to start graduate school. Her first day of academics is interrupted when twin assassins riding motorcycles threaten the safety of the students. They wield swords and seem to have a particular target in mind: Batgirl.
Writers Cameron Stewart and Brendon Fletcher have taken the world of Batman and done the impossible. They’ve made it relevant for not only fanboys, but high school girls and the youth of today in general. As I perused Batgirl #36, I couldn...

Batgirl #36
Written by Brenden Fletcher and Cameron Stewart
Art by Babs Tarr
Published by DC Comics
I am really digging the new direction Batgirl has taken. It reminds me of the days when Yvonne Craig took up the cowl. Fun. Fresh. Hip. Brenden Fletcher, Cameron Stewart, and Babs Tarr brought back the familiar traits of the Batgirl people admired with a lot less grit and blood while still maintaining the capability of kicking major bad guy butt. I am glad Barbara decided to ditch the lace around all her gadgets though. Lace trimmings are so last century.
In Batgirl #36, we find that Barbara’s luck certainly hasn’t improved since the last issue. Black Canary is still fuming about the loss of her house, the key piece of data to Barbara’s thesis is still lost in cyber-space, and there is still some creep out there pretending to be Batgirl.

Batgirl #35
Written by Brenden Fletcher and Cameron Stewart

Published by DC Comics
Landing on shelves this Wednesday, Batgirl #35 feels likes something from a different time and place. It goes against the grain compared to DC Comics’ regular output, a laid back slice of life superhero tale where our hero barely puts on a mask. Brenden Fletcher and Cameron Stewart take up the reins on this title after a three year run by fan-favorite Gail Simone, making this a big pair of shoes to fill..
The issue opens up with Barbara Gordon getting all her earthly possessions into a moving van as she heads off to a new place to live and a new status quo. Shortly, after a full night of partying, Barbara finds herself stuck in a real crisis as her laptop (and all her research and Batgirl data on it) stolen which leads her...

At this year’s San Diego Comic Con, most of the big DC Comics announcements came through the film or TV side of things. No films, except for Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, were announced, but lots of TV shows based on DC Comics characters got trailers, teasers, and lots of buzz. But, between the no longer chain smoking British magicians, shirtless archers, and hints of Batman villains and allies showing up on Arrow, DC did make a few big comics announcements mostly having to do with Batman’s 75th anniversary.

Dark Horse, the elder statesman of independent comics, continues to show no signs of slowing down during this year’s San Diego Comic Con. Even though Marvel now holds the rights to Star Wars, its biggest licensed comics property, Dark Horse struck back by announcing a several creator owned titles in different genres as well as an expansion to the Mignolaverse and a sequel to one of the most beloved novels of the past century. Dark Horse also won some Eisners in a wide variety of categories showing the company’s comics appeal to many types of readers from kids to people who wouldn’t normally read comics.

Even though Batman has gotten most of the publicity, another comics character is celebrating a big anniversary. 2014 marks the 20th anniversary of Hellboy’s first appearance in the Seed of Destruction miniseries by Mike Mignola and scripted by John Byrne.

If you're a fan of Fight Club, you'll be very happy to know author Chuck Palahniuk is writing a sequel! The new story is coming to us in the form of a 10 issue limited comic series that will be illustrated by Cameron Stewart. This is a description of the story from Dark Horse Comics:
Fight Club 2 takes place alternately in the future and the past. It picks up a decade after the ending of his original book, where the protagonist is married to equally problematic Marla Singer and has a 9-year-old son named Junior, though the narrator is failing his son in the same way his dad failed him.
At the same time, Palahniuk says readers will have an idea of Tyler's true origins. "Tyler is something that maybe has been around for centuries and is not just this aberration that's popped into his mind."

I am Jack's cross-medium franchise. Author Chuck Palahniuk is revisiting his epochal tale of consumer disenfranchisement and punching strangers, Fight Club - the 1999 film version of which gave us peak-level Brad Pitt abs - and he's doing so in a medium that may surprise you: comic books. Fight Club 2 will be a 10-issue Dark Horse Comics series illustrated by Cameron Stewart, debuting in May 2015. Palahniuk describes to USA Today being sort-of forced into the project, saying he mentioned it at last year's New York Comic Con. "I messed up and said I was doing the sequel in front of 1,500 geeks with telephones.

The movie “Fight Club” captured the imagination of a generation, with a twist ending few saw coming and even fewer can forget. Now, Chuck Palahniuk, the author of the 1996 book the film was based on, is returning to the characters he created for a comic book sequel. Published by Dark Horse Comics, which has been publishing official sequels to Joss Whedon‘s “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” “Angel,” and “Firefly/Serenity” for years, “Fight Club 2” will be a 10-issue series illustrated by Cameron Stewart. A year ago, Fight Club author Chuck Palahniuk revealed that a sequel to his bruising 1996 satire was in the works – although in the form of a graphic novel. Now, in a move that breaks the first two rules of Fight Club, the heralded writer is speaking about the follow-up, in the wake of a Comic-Con panel with the adaptation’s director, David Fincher, on Sunday. Designed as a ten-issue comic book series, Fight Club 2 will feature the novel and film’s three main characters.
Set 10 years after the destructive events of the novel, Fight Club 2 will focus on the Narrator (who Edward Norton portrayed in Fincher’s film), who is now married to Marla Singer and has a nine-year-old son. Meanwhile, the Project Mayhem organization, which began wreaking havoc in Palahniuk’s novel, is still around and rears its head when the protagonist’s son is in peril. Also, the...

Palahniuk will appear at the San Diego Comic-Con this weekend at a Fight Club panel alongside Fincher, so we’ll likely hear a lot more about the project then. However, the author has already revealed some details, including the fact that it will take place in both the future and the past.
To begin with, it picks up a decade after the ending of the original book, and the protagonist (played by Edward Norton in the movie) is now married to Marla Singer (Helena Bonham Carter) and has a 9-year-old son named Junior. However, the narrator is failing...

Directly contravening the first two rules that he himself came up with, writer Chuck Palahniuk has been talking about carrying on the story of Fight Club next year. Not in the form of another book, however, or a big screen sequel from director David Fincher – nope, Fight Club 2 is going to be a comic book. Specifically, a 10-issue maxiseries illustrated by Cameron Stewart that Dark Horse will publish start in 2015. The story continues eighteen years after the book and – wait, Fight Club came out eighteen years ago? Boy, do we feel old now.
The press release, which came out ahead of the book’s official announcement at San Diego Comic-Con this weekend (Palahniuk accidentally leaked the news during a recent public appearance), says that the comic “takes place alternately in the future and the past. Batgirl has undergone several transformations over the years, with the most recent redo (brought on by The New 52) being met with much fanfare as it saw the return of the original Batgirl, Barbara Gordon, to the role. Also having Gail Simone writing the book doesn’t hurt either. While most were excited about the pairing and what it would bring, this move came right after the previous creative team had solidified Stephanie Brown as a worthy successor. Since The New 52, she has yet to resurface. While I was ecstatic to have Babara back, there was a small raincloud above the whole thing. DC had finally gotten me to care about Stephanie and get into the book's overall light-hearted tone, and then they yank the rug out from under me.

As we reported last week, there is a new creative team in town, and with them comes a new direction.

All eyes are on the Dark Knight in 2014 with the 75th Anniversary of Batman upon us. One way DC Comics is celebrating the milestone is through the release of Batman - Detective Comics Volume 4: The Wrath. Made up of issues 19 through 24 and Annual 2 of the monthly series, the book keeps the super hero investigating different crimes the way his creator Bob Kane originally envisioned him to.
Batman has his hands full as the super villains of Gotham City continue their reigns of terror. The Caped Crusader crosses paths with the enigmatic 900 and must also foil the devious plans of both Emperor Penguin and a murderous vigilante calling himself The Wrath. While Batman is fighting his archenemies, scientist Kurt Langstrom is battling his own personal demons as it begins to look like his alter ego Man-Bat is committing horrific murders nightly.

Batgirl has an all new look, and a cool new uniform to fight crime in. I personally love it, and it's going to be great when we start seeing cosplayers sporting it in real life. The design comes from comic illustrator Babs Tarr who is making her mainstream comic debut with Batgirl.
The new comic writing team consists of Cameron Stewart and Brenden Fletcher, who worked on Batman Inc. and Wednesday Comics. Barbara Gordon's new adventure begins with Batgirl #35, and it will reevaluate her life in a big way.
Stewart talked about the direction they are taking the character with MTV saying:
"She's leaving it all behind her. We really wanted to make this a book with a light tone, of fun and adventure and mystery, and let the rest of the Bat-family deal with the darkness. She's got problems, and conflict, and enemies to fight, but our priority...

From MTV News:
Starting in October, Barbara Gordon gets a brand new look, and team of writers and artist with “Batgirl #35.” Cameron Stewart and Brenden Fletcher, no strangers to the DC Universe from their work on “Batman Inc.” and “Wednesday Comics” respectively, will write the book, which finds a fire burning everything Batgirl owns, forcing her to reevaluate her life in a big way.
Additionally, the writing team is joined by newcomer, artist Babs Tarr, who along with sometimes artist Stewart, has revamped her namesake’s costume to be way more practical than the skin-hugging body-armor comic fans might be used to.
(And to fans wondering what’s up with departing, much beloved writer Gail Simone: no worries, we hear she has another project with DC Comics that will be announced shortly. So stay tuned.)
On a personal note, I think that this new design is more likely to attract a youthful audience.

Announced earlier today by DC Comics, Cameron Stewart and Brenden Fletcher will soon be taking over as the new creative team for Batgirl with Babs Tarr on artwork. Tarr’s addition to the title was easily the biggest (and most welcome) surprise with the former video game artist now being billed as the regular artist for the series.
With her arrival, she’ll not only be bringing an exciting new aesthetic to the book, but also a new costume redesign for Batgirl – one that Stewart says was influenced by the items Barbara could find in Burnside’s boutiques and vintage stores.
According to the new creative team, Barbara Gordon will wind up relocating to Burnside, the hipster-rich neighborhood of Gotham. “Barbara allows herself to be immersed in youth culture for the first time, exploring the social side of life in Burnside,” says Fletcher. “That’s not to say there isn’t mystery,...

Last week, from the 17th to the 24th of November, Thought Bubble – the Leeds comic art festival – took place at various venues across the city, culminating in the centre-piece two day convention on the 23rd and 24th at Clarence Dock. I got a chance to visit the convention on the last two days (two-day passes for the general public were a very reasonable £22, incidentally). It was the first comic book convention I have ever been to and therefore an entirely new experience for me, so I thought I’d give my views on it…
I arrived in Leeds with friends on the Friday afternoon and immediately scoped out the venue. Clarence Dock consists of New Dock Hall, Royal Armouries Hall and Allied London Hall.

We hold in our hands the covers for DC Comics this February. As a child of four can plainly see, these comics have been hermetically sealed in a Cgc 9.9 slab, and they’ve been kept in a #2 mayonnaise jar under a giant stack of returned copies of Holy Terror since noon today.
What do we have worth noting? The new look of Darkseid, and we’re far enough into the new 52 books that it’s time for Batman to start crossing over in all of them. Plus Mara Jade, the red-haired assassin who fell in love with her blond-haired man she was sent to kill– oh, I’m sorry, that’s from Star Wars. This is Mera in a jade outfit. Our mistake.

DC Comics isn't just trying to reach out to new readers in comics shops this year. The new trailer for their company-wide "New 52" reboot is going to be shown on TV and in movie theaters in order to appeal to wider masses. That strategy received some support in the Twitter-stream last night, though J.M. DeMatteis thought it looked dark, and Gail Simone called for rougher language.
It was a good night for sketches, too, as Phil Jimenez posted a Wonder Woman piece he made, and Cameron Stewart gave Batman a go using an iPad. Gaze upon their art and learn a thing or two about being British from Warren Ellis after the jump.
Those tweets and more ranked atop the Twitter Report for August 17, 2011.
DC trailer pt. 1: @JMDeMatteis I thought the Dcu was a place filled with hope. The New 52 commercial makes the entire universe seem like Gotham City on a very bad day.
