Following a turbulent year marked by dueling industry strikes and the violent contraction–if not yet full pop–of the streaming bubble, 2024 has thus far been pretty good to Hollywood. It certainly helps that we’re in the middle of awards season, which for cineastes amounts to a three-month holiday largely characterized by voluminous binge-watching. And not just binge-watching of the year’s top films. For the curious, the season also offers up a smuggler’s bounty full of talking special post-screening Q&As, roundtables, filmmaker panels, celebratory cocktail receptions and more.
Traditionally Film Independent’s Directors Close-Up series has been a little bit of all of the above, presenting behind-the-scenes insight into the year’s most important works of cinema, straight from the mouths and brains of filmmakers themselves. The Walking Dead producer Gale Anne Hurd has called for U.S. and European countries to strike formal co-production agreements to support indie films and TV shows.
“There are no co-production agreements between U.S. and European countries, so what many of us have done is partner with countries that do have them, like Canada and the UK,” said Hurd at the Audio-Visual Producers Summit in Italy. “That’s what I’ve been doing: putting those pieces together. Can we today move to find legitimnate co-production agreements between the U.S. and European countries?”
The Valhalla Entertainment founder and Terminator producer revealed she had “struggled for a year” to get distribution for her latest film project The YouTube Effect, in a tough environment for indie productions. “Everyone turned us down but we went ahead anyway because we had supportive financiers who believed in the project and now we’re in distribution,...

Exclusive: Showtime’s hit drama The Chi, which films entirely in Chicago, has paused production on its upcoming sixth season, effective today. The decision was made Monday after a second consecutive day of shooting was disrupted by WGA strike-related picketing.
Eight episodes from Season 6 have been completed; they were shot before the strike. I hear The Chi, whose seasons have consisted of 10 episodes each, had been slated to shoot for another couple of weeks from finished scripts. It is unclear when production will resume.
Showtime has not set a Season 6 premiere date yet. It is possible that the season gets split into two, so fans get fresh episodes sooner. Reps for Showtime and The Chi producer 20th Television declined comment.
After writers Sunday night were alerted on social media that The Chi production had asked those working on the show to be at the Cinespace Chicago Film Studios before 4 Am Monday to avoid picketers,...

Showtime’s The Chi is the latest series whose production has been disrupted by the ongoing writers strike. According to sources, the hit drama, which is based in Chicago, filmed Friday morning before moving to another location, which had a picket line already in place.
As a result, no shooting was done at that particular place. Filming on the series, which I hear also was disrupted last week, is slated to resume Monday.
The picketing on The Chi was a result of a Rapid Response appeal by two WGA strike captains. It was amplified by veteran showrunner Warren Leight who has emerged as a Twitter “dispatcher,” helping to coordinate WGA production shutdown efforts, mostly in and around New York.

Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson made a splash at Sundance earlier this month with his feature directing debut “Summer of Soul.” Now, the Roots drummer is trying his hand at another music documentary, as MRC Non-Fiction announced Friday that Questlove will direct a feature about the life of Sly Stone, founding member of Sly and the Family Stone.
Here’s what MRC had to say about the project: “The untitled documentary follows the story of the influential artist, king of funk, and fashion icon Sly Stone, a musician who was breaking all the rules at a time when doing so was extremely challenging, even dangerous. The pressure of explosive mainstream pop success and the responsibility of representing Black America forced him to walk the fine line of impossible expectations.”
