- As a youth had trials with Huddersfield Town Football Club.
- Primarily known for his long-standing role as Inspector Andrew Monroe in ITV's The Bill (1984).

- Studied English and Drama at Exeter University and trained as a teacher. Taught in schools in London's East End in between acting jobs.
- Tarrant had two sons, Juma Kwasi Woodhouse (born 1987) by his ex-partner Patricia Woodhouse, and Louis Morris-Tarrant (born 2011) by his partner Sabrina Morris.

After leaving Medium Fair he was part of Peter Cheeseman's company at the Victoria Theatre, Stoke-on-Trent.
- Colin Tarant suffered from depression and died on 26 January 2012 at the Bristol Royal Infirmary from self-inflicted stab wounds at his home in Bristol.
