Back in the mid-2010s — before Ann Thomas started her Transgender Talent management company — it wasn’t always easy for Hollywood productions to find trans actors. “They were calling around to LGBT centers: ‘Do you happen to know somebody?'” recalls Thomas, who started the agency in 2015 after appearing on an episode of Glee that featured a 197-person-strong, all-trans choir, many of whose members were found through such untraditional casting methods.
Since then, Thomas has won roles for an array of the company’s trans and nonbinary clients including Zoey Luna (a lead in the 2020 film The Craft: Legacy), Shannon Gibbs (Jackass 4.5) and Emmett Preciado (Good Trouble). “She cares about the job part of it and she cares about the emotions of every single one of the people whom she represents,” Luna says of her manager.

Renée Zellweger has been justly celebrated for her astonishingly transformative performance as Midwestern murderer Pam Hupp in the NBC series “The Thing About Pam,” but the key to the show’s greatness lies in the fact that the entire supporting cast is worthy of sharing the screen with her. Showrunner Jenny Klein’s vision for the series, which has the breadth of an Altman-esque ensemble piece with the penetrating complexity of a deep-dive character study, demanded that every role from the day players on up be played with precision, empathy, and wit — all while respecting the gravity of the real-life tragedies being depicted.

Terri Taylor has been the in-house casting director for Jason Blum’s Blumhouse Prods. since 2013, a job that’s unusual at the studio level. Blum and Taylor have built a language and relationship that goes back even further, to the studio’s 2010 “Paranormal Activity 2.”
When she’s not working on casting Blumhouse productions, Taylor invests her time in mentoring other casting directors within the Blumhouse world. “She is my mentor,” casting director John McAlary says. The two first met in 2007 when he first worked as an assistant. “She oversaw the process on “Welcome to Blumhouse.” He adds.
With “The Craft: Legacy,” the reboot of Andrew Fleming’s 1996 classic, debuting on-demand on Oct. 28, Taylor talks with Variety about the type of actors the studio is looking for, and shares her process for matching talent to story.

Casting actors to play real life people “adds a layer to our process,” Terri Taylor reveals. That was especially true of “The Loudest Voice,” which recounts the rise and fall of Fox News founder Roger Ailes (Russell Crowe). The veteran casting director took viewers behind the curtain while appearing at Gold Derby’s Meet the Btl Experts panel, conducted virtually by managing editor Chris Beachum. Watch our exclusive video interview with Taylor above.

When trying to find the right actors to disappear into recognizable figures, Taylor not only looks for performers who are “talented,” but focuses on a number of “physical characteristics that make them also right in a physical sense… to that character that they’re going to be portraying.”
Given that, you wouldn’t necessarily think Oscar-winner Crowe (“Gladiator”) would be the right choice Ailes, who was ousted from his position...

While “Bohemian Rhapsody” lost at the Costume Designer Awards on Tuesday, it still ended up winning the most precursor prizes of the eight Best Picture nominees at the Oscars. This biopic of Queen frontman Freddie Mercury won with four of the nine guilds at which it contended. It lost with the art directors, costume designers, makeup artists/hairstylists, producers and visual effects wizards.
Two of its Academy Awards rivals for the top award — “Black Panther” and “The Favourite” — did win over the costume designers. These victories in the fantasy and period film races respectively brought their overall hauls to three apiece. “Black Panther” had previously prevailed with the actors and art directors while “The Favourite” scored with the art directors and film editors. They are now tied with “Green Book,” which had wins with the actors, casting directors and producers.

With the Writers Guild and Motion Picture Sound Editors awards on Sunday (February 17), we’ve now heard from 12 of the 13 guilds. The costume designers don’t weigh in till hours after Oscar voting ends on Tuesday, February 19.
The winners with the writers were “Can You Ever Forgive Me?” (adapted”) and “Eighth Grade” (original) while “A Quiet Place” took the top sound editing award. The Oscar frontrunner for Best Original Screenplay, “The Favourite,” was ineligible at the WGA Awards. Over on the sound side, two other Best Picture nominees, “Bohemian Rhapsody” and “Roma,” picked up two and one prizes respectively.
“Bohemian Rhapsody” had also won on Saturday with the sound mixers at the Cinema Audio Society Awards. That one-two punch moves this biopic of Queen frontman Freddie Mercury into first on our guild awards scorecard with four wins following its success with the actors and film editors.

It took till the last weekend of guild awards season but “A Star is Born” finally picked up a prize at the Makeup and Hair Styling Awards on Saturday, February 16. This win for best contemporary makeup was particularly welcome as Bradley Cooper‘s remake of the Hollywood classic lost at the other guild awards of the evening. The Cinema Audio Society went with “Bohemian Rhapsody” for Best Sound Mixing.
This marked the third victory to date for the biopic of Queen frontman Freddie Mercury following its success with the actors and film editors. “Crazy Rich Asians” picked up its third prize as well, with a win for contemporary hairstyling. It had previously won over both the art and casting directors. Each is now tied with “Green Book,” which has wins with the actors, casting directors and producers.
Two more guilds — the sound editors and writers — will chime in on Sunday.

We’ re now more than two-thirds along the road to the Oscars with 9 of the 13 guilds having weighed in with their picks before academy voters begin casting their final ballots on Feb. 12. “Green Book” has won with the three of the eight groups heard from to date: actors, casting directors and producers.
After their success with the art directors, “Black Panther” and “The Favourite” are now tied with “Bohemian Rhapsody” at two wins apiece as detailed below. And “Roma” got on the scoreboard with that DGA win for multi-hyphenate Alfonso Cuaron, who lost the cinematography award on Feb. 9 to “Cold War” lenser Lukasz Zal.
Three more groups — makeup artists & hair stylists, sound editors and writers — announce their winners during the eight days of voting for the Academy Awards. And the costume designers hold their awards mere hours after Academy Awards balloting ends on Feb. 20.

We are now more than halfway along the road to the Oscars as the seventh of 13 guilds — the Visual Effects Society — handed out its precursor prizes on Feb. 5. Only one of the Best Picture nominees was in the running: “Bohemian Rhapsody” lost its bid for best supporting visual effects to “First Man.” That marked the first guild win for Damien Chazelle‘s biopic of Neil Armstrong.
The big winner with the Ves was “Avengers: Infinity War” which swept its four categories, including the guild equivalent of Best Picture – visual effects in a feature motion picture. Among its other wins was effects simulations. While it had contended for its depiction of Wakanda, the home of Black Panther, it won instead for bringing Titan to the screen. That wasn’t surprising given that the Ves had snubbed “Black Panther” across the board.

With the Ace Eddie Awards on Feb. 1, we’ve now heard from 4 of the 13 guilds who give out prizes. “Bohemian Rhapsody,” which had already racked up a win with SAG for lead Rami Malek, won with the cutters on the drama side. That moves it into second place on our guild awards scorecard behind “Green Book” which has won over the actors, casting directors and producers to date. And “The Favourite” got on the board with its comedy/musical win at the Ace Eddies.
On Feb. 2, we’ll hear from the directors (“Roma” helmer Alfonso Cuaron is tipped to take that prize) and the art directors who hand out awards in three genres. “I was in inappropriate rooms, and I was placed in hotel rooms. It is because of the casting director that I was a protected child in this industry. And even to the point of risking their own career, I have a couple of memories of the casting director saying, ‘No, I’m staying,'” Laura Dern said in her speech while accepting the Lynn Stalmaster Award for Career Achievement at the Casting Society of America’s 34th annual Artios Awards held on Thursday at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles.

The casting branch of the academy is only five years old and doesn’t have an Oscar category of its own. However, the Casting Society of America has been handing out the Artios Awards for 34 years (“Artios” is from the ancient Greek meaning “perfectly fitted.”). This year’s awards took place on Thursday (Jan. 31) on both coasts. At the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, winners included three of the Oscar frontrunners for Best Picture: “BlacKkKlansman,” “Green Book” and “Vice.” (see full list of winners below).

We just heard from the Motion Picture Sound Editors society with their nominees for the best of the year. These maestros of sound were the last of the 13 guilds and societies to weigh in with their choices following the actors, art directors, casting directors, cinematographers, costume designers, directors, film editors, makeup artists & hairstylists, producers, sound mixers, visual effects wizards and writers.
“A Star is Born” reaped two bids from the Mpse and ends this phase of awards season with nominations from 12 of the 13 precursor prizes (it missed out only for visual effects). Among the other leading Oscar contenders, “Bohemian Rhapsody” is now sitting in second place alone as it reaped two bids as well from the sound editors.
“Black Panther” likewise earned two nominations from the Mpse and moves into a tie for third with “BlacKkKlansman” as each has nominations from eight guilds. And with its two Mpse bids, “The Favourite...

“A Star is Born” kept its perfect track record with the guild awards on January 10, as it numbered among the nominations announced for both the Costume Designers Guild (Cdg) and the Makeup and Hairstyling (Muahs) Awards.
Those nominations mean that his remake of the Hollywood classic is now 11 for 11 with the guild and society awards. It had already been cited by the actors, art directors, casting directors, cinematographers, directors, film editors, producers and writers as one of the best of the year in their respective fields. Not surprisingly, “A Star is Born” leads our predictions to win Best Picture at the Oscars.
With bids from both the costume designers and make-up artists & hairstylists, “BlacKkKlansman” is now in second place with mentions at eight of these precursors.

January 8 was a great day for “A Star is Born” and Bradley Cooper. The neophyte helmer was nominated twice by the Directors Guild of America. He contends for the both the big prize, Best Director, and for the first-time feature award. Earlier in the day, the sound mixing team for his film had reaped a bid with the Cinema Audio Society.

We’ve now heard from six of the guilds — actors, art directors, cinematographers, film editors, producers and writers — as well as the casting directors with their nominees for the best of the year in their respective fields.
Only one film — “A Star is Born” — has reaped bids from all seven precursor prizes. Not surprisingly, it is our frontrunner to win Best Picture at the Oscars.
Six films – “BlacKkKlansman,” “Crazy Rich Asians,” “The Favourite,” “Green Book,” “Roma” and “Vice” — have been cited by five precursors. All of these but “Crazy Rich Asians” number among our top 10 Best Picture contenders. But could we be underestimating this comedy blockbuster, which is currently in 14th place on our chart?
The current roster is rounded out by “Black Panther” and “Bohemian Rhapsody,” which are both in contention at four guilds as well as three-time contender “Mary Poppins Returns” and two-time nominee “If Beale Street Could Talk.

“Get Out” scene-stealer Betty Gabriel may have had her breakout moment as the film’s creepy housekeeper Georgina, but she’s been toiling away in the haunted horror Blumhouse for years now. “I guess I have an affinity towards darkness, the dark side,” she said. “The movies are very on the fringe. They live in a very dark place.”
It’s a far different life for herself than Gabriel had first imagined. Although she recalls acting in a church play and putting on skits as a child growing up on the East Coast, she never thought of herself as a performer. Instead, she envisioned working with animals and even earned a Bachelor’s degree in animal science at the Iowa State University.

Greenlit means a project is officially a go, so all you have to do is follow these leads to stay up to date. You never know where you’ll find an opportunity to land an audition! “Crazy Rich Asians” “Crazy Rich Asians” is this summer’s hottest film, and the studios know it. So it is no surprise that Warner Bros. is already developing the sequel, with screenwriters Peter Chiarelli and Adele Lim and director Jon M. Chu all returning. The studio will still technically have to give the film an official greenlight once the script is in place, but the rights for both book sequels “China Rich Girlfriend” and “Rich People Problems” were already acquired before “Crazy Rich Asians” hit theaters, and the public interest is already there—the film has dominated the box office two weekends in a row. Once a script is in place and the studio...

Greenlit means a project is officially a go, so all you have to do is follow these leads to stay up to date. You never know where you’ll find an opportunity to land an audition! “In the Heights”Before the world knew Lin-Manuel Miranda’s name from “Hamilton,” the Broadway world was well-versed in his work thanks to his Tony-winning debut musical “In the Heights.” Back then, in 2008, there was word a movie was in the works (with Miranda starring). When “Hamilton” hit international success, the “Heights” film was back on track…with just one problem: The Weinstein Company. But now, after a fervent bidding war, the rights have been purchased by Warner Bros., so lights are back up in Washington Heights. Miranda will, of course, be producing, and “Crazy Rich Asians” director Jon Chu will be helming. No word on casting yet, though Chu has used Terri Taylor...

Rumorville: Jordan Peele’s ‘Us’ Gets a Release Date and Potential Stars + More Casting News to Watch
Welcome to Rumorville! Here you can learn about casting news that’s about to break in Hollywood. These speculations might be only rumors, but that doesn’t mean you can’t follow the trail all the way to the audition room. “Us” When you have a directorial debut as big as Jordan Peele had with “Get Out,” everyone is going to be waiting for your next move. Luckily, the wait is (kind of) over. On Tuesday, taking to Twitter, Peele dropped the poster art, name, and release date for his next film: “Us.” While details are sparse about the plot, the film will be released on March 19, 2019, and already has a set of potential stars lined up, including Lupita Nyong’o, Elizabeth Moss, and Winston Duke. Now, there’s a little bit of a waiting game. Once again, Peele will write and direct “Us,” as well as produce under his Monkeypaw Productions banner,...

Of the nine Best Picture nominees at the Oscars, “Dunkirk” did the best at the guild awards. It ended up winning with five (casting directors, film editors, sound editors and visual effects wizards) of the 11 at which it contended. It lost with the actors, art directors, cinematographers, costume designers, directors and producers. This WWII epic had not been in the running with the makeup artists & hairstylists or writers.

“The Shape of Water” pulled off a shocker at the Costume Designers Guild Awards on Feb. 20, winning Best Period Costumes over Oscar frontrunner “Phantom Thread.” That unexpected outcome marked its fourth win from the 11 guilds weighing in to date. This fantasy film previously prevailed with the directors, producers and art directors. It is in contention with the two remaining groups on deck: the makeup artists & hair stylists and sound editors. The only group with which it did not contend this awards season was the Visual Effects Society.
Of the other Best Picture nominees, “Dunkirk” has gone four for nine at these precursor prizes (casting directors, film editors, sound editors and visual effects wizards). It is in the running with the sound editors.

Of the nine Oscar nominees for Best Picture, “Dunkirk” is faring best with the guild awards. It has won with four of the 10 to date (casting directors, film editors, sound editors and visual effects wizards). It is in contention at two of the remaining three groups (costume designers, sound mixers) but missed out on any recognition from the makeup artists & hair stylists. Those three guilds will hand out awards during final voting for the Oscars, which kicks off on Feb. 20 for eight days.
While “Dunkirk” racked up nominations from 11 of the 13 guilds (it was also snubbed by the writers), “The Shape of Water” did it one better, with only the Visual Effects Society overlooking this fantasy film in its nominations. It won with three groups to date: the directors, producers and art directors. And it is in contention at all three of the upcoming awards.

The Oscar frontrunner for Best Picture, “The Shape of Water,” is in contention for prizes from 12 of the 13 guilds. The one group that didn’t nominate it, the Visual Effects Society, held its awards on Feb. 13. One of the other eight Best Picture nominees, “Dunkirk,” won best supporting visual effects here. That brought its overall recognition from the guilds up to three, having previously prevailed with the casting directors and film editors.
This latest win ties this WWII epic with “The Shape of Water,” which has also been cited by three of the eight groups to be heard from to date: the directors, producers and art directors. It lost its races at the awards held by the actors, casting directors, film editors and writers.

The Oscar frontrunner for Best Picture, “The Shape of Water,” has reaped bids from 12 of the 13 guild awards, having been snubbed only by the visual effects artists. This fantasy film has won with three of the seven groups to be heard from to date: the directors, producers and art directors. It lost its races at the awards held by the actors, casting directors, film editors and writers.
It was bested at the Writers Guild of America Awards on Feb. 11 by “Get Out,” one of the other eight Best Picture nominees. That satire contends at eight guilds in total and has also won a prize from the DGA for first-time helmer Jordan Peele. The other winner with the WGA was Best Picture contender “Call Me By Your Name.”
Another Best Picture nominee, “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,” was a favorite of the actors, taking home a whopping three SAG Awards. And...

“The Shape of Water,” which reaped a leading 13 Oscar nominations, is in the running for 12 of the 13 guild awards missing out only with the visual effects artists. It has won with three of the six groups to be heard from to date: the directors, producers and art directors. This fantasy film lost its races at the awards held by the actors, casting directors and film editors.
One of its main Oscar rivals for Best Picture, “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,” edged it out with the casting directors. And this character study was a favorite of the actors as well, taking home a whopping three SAG Awards.
Two of the other nine Best Picture nominees — “Dunkirk” and “Lady Bird” — also won with the casting directors with the former also finding favor with the film editors. Another Best Picture contender, “Darkest Hour,” picked up a prize from the actors.

With just hours before the Oscar nominations are announced, we heard from the Motion Picture Sound Editors with their nominees for the best of the year. These masters of sound were 13th guild to weigh in with their choices following the actors, art directors, cinematographers, costume designers, directors, film editors, makeup artists & hairstylists, producers, sound mixers, visual effects wizards and writers. In addition, the casting directors have had their say.
With its three bids from the Mpse, “The Shape of Water” is represented at 12 of the 13 guild awards; the Visual Effects Society had ended a streak that had seen it reap bids from the first 11 precursor prizes to reveal their rosters.
“Dunkirk” is at 11, having missed out with the writers and makeup artists/hairstylists. The Best Picture frontrunner, “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,” is in contention at nine guilds.”Get Out” and “Lady Bird” are each missing from the line-ups of five guilds.

Casting directors remain the only job in the opening titles that doesn’t have its own Oscar category, but there’s reason to believe that will change. Already recognized by the Emmys, casting directors have made tremendous strides since they unionized in 2005 and negotiated their first contract with studios. In 2013, the guild earned its own Academy branch and received three seats at the Academy’s Board of Governors’ table. Last year, Lynn Stalmaster (“The Graduate,” “West Side Story”) received an honorary Oscar at the Governors Awards, becoming the first-ever casting director to receive an Academy Award.
So: Let’s imagine for a moment casting directors had their own Oscar category in 2017: What are the best-cast films of the year?
IndieWire asked 15 of the top casting directors to nominate films worthy of casting recognition this year. We often think of the best films in terms of their expressive cinematography, enveloping production design,...

Seth Meyers sat down with Jordan Peele on Nov. 14 at the 92nd Street Y in New York City to discuss his smash hit, the racially charged horror-thriller “Get Out.” Released back in February, the film has garnered attention from the industry as an awards contender, including leading the 2017 Gotham Awards in nominations with four. The story follows a mixed-race couple as Chris, the black lead, is meeting his white girlfriend Rose’s parents for the first time during a weekend in their bucolic home. Over the course of his visit, he finds Rose’s parents are sitting on a twisted, racist scheme, and he’s caught in the middle. As a first-time director, Peele did a lot of things right, but he noted that the film would be nothing had he not found the perfect performers to bring his script to life. Alongside CD Terri Taylor, he sought out actors...
