Mary Timony’s fifth solo album, Untame the Tiger, is notable for its layered and decisively foregrounded acoustic and electric guitars. The classically trained singer-songwriter made her name in the 1990s as part of the alt-rock band Helium, and as a solo artist she’s dabbled in psychedelia, prog-rock, and blues- and South Asian-inflected folk music. But while a few of the songs here—the title track, “The Dream,” and “No Thirds”—feature synth strings, the majority of the album sticks to a traditional rock-trio lineup with occasional percussion flourishes.
Untame the Tiger also has a specific time and setting in mind: early 1970s Britain. “No Thirds,” for one, is built around droning guitars that nod to Richard Thompson. Like Thompson, Timony is unfashionably fond of guitar solos, which distill the mood of her songs down to their purest element. In her hands, the guitar is alternately capable of crying...

Iggy Pop, Patti Smith, Tom Waits and the Pogues' Shane MacGowan are among the contributors to a new compilation of pirate ballads. The grizzled, A-list crew was assembled by Johnny Depp, who performs on the album, and the people behind the Pirates of the Caribbean movies.
First, some more names. Among the hearties who are shivering timbers on Son of Rogue's Gallery: Pirate Ballads, Sea Songs and Chanteys: Tom Waits with Keith Richards, Michael Stipe with Courtney Love, Nick Cave, Broken Social Scene, Marianne Faithful with the McGarrigle sisters, Sissy Bounce with Akron/Family, Beth Orton, Macy Gray and Sean Lennon.
The two-disc set, due next year, is the sequel to a compilation from 2006. There too, Pirates producer Hal Willner manned the tiller.

Surrey Cricket Club have confirmed that Tom Maynard has been found dead at a London Underground Station.
The 23-year-old Batsman was struck by a district line train at Wimbledon Station earlier today, according to the British Transport police. Media reports claim the police are allegedly treating his death as a suicide though we must stress that this has not yet been confirmed.
Maynard, originally from Cardiff, had just played for his country on Sunday in the t20 game against Kent. He joined Surrey at the start of last season having come through the ranks at Glamorgan.
Surrey cricket club said in a statement that Maynard was “an incredibly talented young batsman”.
“His future potential was unlimited, with experts both inside and outside the club predicting he would soon follow in the footsteps of his father Matthew by graduating to full England honours,” it said.

After the great guitarist Bert Jansch died last week, Pete Paphides penned a lengthy tribute for Film&Music – a tribute a great many of you appreciated (and which brought tears to the eyes of gpwayne and steewart54). In fact, just about the only gripes were from those complaining that a musician of Jansch's stature did not need character references from mere rock musicians in order to persuade the world of his greatness. "I hate having to read about Johnny Marr, Neil Young and no-marks like Devendra Banhart in whatever few Jansch pieces I read," wrote DeathByEnnui. "Bert Jansch needs no validation, no stamp of approval. All you need to do is tell people that they simply must own a copy of Rosemary Lane because it's one of the greatest albums of all time."

Krazy Kat & The Art of George Herriman A Celebration
By Craig Yoe
176 pages, Abrams ComicArts, U.S. $29.95/Can. $35.95
As a kid, my first exposure to Krazy Kat were the 50 animated shorts that were produced between 1962-1964 and ran with Beetle Bailey and Snuffy Smith cartoons in a thirty minute block. I found the cartoons charming if a little odd and it was years later before I finally saw some of George Herriman’s wonderful comic strip work. While a comic genius, I knew little about him or how the world perceived his amazing creation.
Thankfully, Craig Yoe, a man with a keen eye for pop art and culture, has assembled a work dedicated to Herriman’s art but also serves as a biography. I now know that the Herriman was born as a light-skinned, Creole African-American in Louisiana before moving west where he did his professional work. In California, he...

Mvd will the second season of the Sundance Channel hit TV show Spectacle: Elvis Costello With…, an awesome hour of music and chat hosted by music maven Mr. Costello, on Blu-ray and DVD on June 7.
Bruce and Elvis get to work in Spectacle.
The two-disc set will feature all seven episodes of the television series’ second season, wherein the bespectacled host shares chords and conversation with such singers, songwriters and superstars as Bono and The Edge of U2, Bruce Springsteen, Neko Case, Sheryl Crow, Nick Lowe, Richard Thompson, Allen Toussaint, Levon Helm, John Prine and Lyle Lovett.
Very cool. And the Springsteen episodes rock! (Well, the music does, at least. As an interview subject, Bruce ain’t all that engaging.)
Shot in 2009 at the storied Harlem’s Apollo Theater and Toronto’s Masonic Temple, the Spectacle season 2’s Blu-ray and DVD will be priced at $39.99 and $29.99, respectively. Amazon has discounted...

Tough guy Arnold Schwarzenegger used to become so aggressive during his son's soccer matches he would infuriate the coach, folk singer Richard Thompson - but the musician felt too "intimidated" to reprimand the actor.
British rocker Thompson used to coach his son's soccer team in Los Angeles, the same squad which Wolfgang Schwarzenegger played on. The "Terminator" star would often turn up to watch his son play and he would offend Thompson by shouting out instructions throughout their sessions - but the musician couldn't work up the courage to ask the actor to calm down.
Thompson tells Mojo magazine, "I coached my son's team in Los Angeles. If you have a European accent of any description then you are the coach - you didn't need any other qualification. Actually, I think I was a really good coach..."

After releasing The Hazards Of Love, the most complicated, ambitious, and polarizing album of the group’s career, The Decemberists return with The King Is Dead, a record that sounds like lost demos from their earliest days. (Or perhaps even earlier… at times, The King Is Dead sounds like it could’ve been recorded around 1986.) Pre-Decemberists, singer-songwriter Colin Meloy played in various alt-country and college-rock acts, and here, he gets back to those roots, steering away from multi-part prog exercises and baroque history lessons, and instead reverting to the simplicity of Richard Thompson, The Kinks, The Smiths, Bruce Springsteen ...

There were, however, many arts practitioners on the list. Is the Diary the only one surprised (and pleased) to see Steve McQueen get a Cbe, given the artist's marathon battle with the establishment to get the Iraq war dead printed on stamps? Among the other recipients of a Cbe – and the Diary apologises to the names omitted here – are producer Trevor Horn, sculptor Richard Wentworth, theatre director Howard Davies, choreographer Wayne McGregor, trumpeter John Wallace, actors Sheila Hancock and David Suchet, and composer Howard Goodall. OBEs went to Annie Lennox, folkie Richard Thompson, director Andrea Arnold, actor Burt Kwouk, costume designer Sandy Powell and composer Colin Matthews. And there are damehoods for actor Harriet Walter, mezzo-soprano turned professor Felicity Palmer and writer Antonia Fraser.
Disappointingly, despite the Diary's call for a triple whammy of knighthoods for Ken Dodd, Ronnie Corbett and Brucie Forsyth, they got nothing.

The artistic quartet were among charitable celebrities in the U.K. who topped Queen Elizabeth II's semi-annual honors list released Friday. The monarch's honors, selected by committees of civil servants, are given to those who have made outstanding contributions to their communities and/or industries. They are announced biennially at New Year's and on the Queen's birthday in June. Eurythmics singer Lennox's efforts with charities working to fight AIDS and poverty in Africa garnered her a nod as an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE)....

No knighthoods for tabloid-backed stars, but Sheila Hancock, David Suchet and composer Howard Goodall make the list
Despite the best efforts of the tabloid press, there were no knighthoods for either Bruce Forsyth or Simon Cowell, but veteran actors Sheila Hancock and David Suchet were both awarded CBEs, as was the composer and broadcaster Howard Goodall. Representatives of the arts and media make up 7% of the honours list.
Harriet Walter, best known as a classical actor with the Royal Shakespeare Company – most recently as Cleopatra opposite Patrick Stewart's Antony and as Friedrich Schiller's Mary Stuart in the West End and on Broadway – is made a dame, 11 years after becoming a Cbe. Reacting to her award, Walter said: "I have reservations about some parts of the honours system. I fear it's not very fair and I think there are lots of people not recognised who should be." Chicago – It all seems perfectly simple to Dr. Jack Kevorkian. When a person is suffering, and recovery isn’t an option, what’s the point of elongating the agony? Should medical professionals force that person to live in pain or grant his (or her) wish to die in peace? The answer is a no-brainer for Kevorkian, whose perspective is unclouded by the complications of “religious dogma.”
Barry Levinson’s terrific HBO biopic, “You Don’t Know Jack,” paints an endearing and humane portrait of a controversial figure many deemed to be a killer. Though Dr. Kevorkian is depicted as a flawed and difficult individual, the film’s perspective on his work is clearly one-sided. The doctor’s no-nonsense approach to serving his patients resulted in his invention of the “Mercitron,” a machine that offers a painless method for suicide. Levinson and screenwriter Adam Mazer view Kevorkian’s opposition (mainly embodied...

Richard Thompson tackles two rock cliches in one fell swoop with his current album and tour. When it came time to record Dream Attic for his new label Shout Factory, Thompson said (like so many touring musicians before him), "Hey, we sound great on the road and whenever we tour a new album the music sounds better by the end of the tour than it did when we recorded it. So why not record the next album live? Work out the songs...on the road!" So, like Jackson Browne and Joe Jackson and too many to mention, that's what he did. The result is Dream Attic, which is neither a landmark work of his nor a flop but simply a new album by Thompson, stronger this time melodically than lyrically. Now that the album is out, Thompson moved on to the current...

The 4th annual Sydney Underground Film Festival, which runs for three days on Sept. 9-11, will screen about 10 features from all over the world and a veritable ton of short films from even further out there.
The fest will open with the latest documentary by a Hollywood icon. It’s Oliver Stone’s South of the Border, which has the director meeting with South American politicians and dignitaries. (The film opened to mixed reviews here in the States earlier this year.) Also screening is Trash Humpers, the latest film by indie rabble-rouser Harmony Korine, which has been confounding audiences on the indie film fest circuit, and Gaspar Noe’s Enter the Void, which has been earning rave reviews.
The rest of the features in the lineup are an eclectic, oddball concoction, including Mladen Djordjevic‘s Serbian atrocity Life and Death of a Porno Gang, Victor Nieuwenhuijs and Maartje Seyferth’s twisted Netherlands tale Meat,...

A legend trades the studio for the stage Minus the applause, you wouldn’t know that Richard Thompson’s Dream Attic is a live album. The former Fairport Convention lead guitarist supposedly chose this setting for its inherent spontaneity, but the songs are played, produced and mixed with such flawless precision that they’re missing the color and blemishes of an actual live show. That’s not to say the album lacks spirit; it could just be that, after 40 years as a performer, he doesn’t make mistakes. Dream Attic, which contains all new material, was recorded over three nights at the Great American...

A stirring singer, an emotionally involving songwriter, a virtuoso guitarist—Richard Thompson earns his superlatives every time he steps onstage. In the studio, however, Thompson tends to be less sure-footed, never fully re-creating the mesmerizing intensity he so easily commands in concert. Dream Attic presents him in an ideal setting, capturing 13 new originals culled mostly from live performances recorded earlier this year at San Francisco’s Great American Music Hall. Tellingly, Dream Attic is stronger on musicianship than songs—there isn’t a “Shoot Out The Lights” or “Small Town Romance” among Thompson’s latest offerings, but he and ...

There’s lots of great stuff to recommend, too. On the last night of the fest, there will be a screening of Chris Hansen‘s second feature film, Endings, which tells the touching story of three people spending their last day on Earth together. The film was reviewed on Bad Lit a few months ago. On the short film front, there’s Loretta Hintz‘s wild lesbian bestiality (sort of) tale, The Sheep and the Ranch Hand and two films by the perpetually awesome Neil Ira Needleman, Meeskit...

London -- U.K. film distribution and finance banner Metrodome, listed here on the Aim stock exchange, has completed an £800,000 ($1.3 million) deal to buy television rights company Target Entertainment Monday.
Metrodome hit the bullseye after snapping up Target's distribution and consumer products interests, and its film and entertainment production labels, Pink Sands and Target U.S.
But the distributor said Target's drama production arm Greenlit, which counts "Foyle's War" and "Vexed" among its credits, is not part of the deal.
Target Entertainment founder Alison Rayson will remain as chief executive of Target as well as taking up a seat on Metrodome's Board, the parties said.
Rayson said the deal marks the end of a long and arduous road to find fresh investors in her company, which was co-owned by private equity house Acuity Capital and entrepreneur Richard Thompson

London -- U.K. film distribution and finance banner Metrodome, listed here on the Aim stock exchange, suspended share dealing Monday as news of merger talks with television company Target Entertainment broke.
The movie company said talks to snap up the television producer of programming such as "Foyle's War" and a 6,000-hours-plus library are ongoing.
Metrodome's move comes weeks after it revamped its structure and strategy. After the departure in April of Metrodome CEO Peter Urie, who exited to pursue personal producer ambitions and the departure of theatrical distribution general manager Sara Frain, the company said it would be significantly reducing its theatrical movie distribution endeavors while at the same time reiterating a desire to keep its toe in the market.
Shortly after Cannes in May, Metrodome sealed U.K. all rights deals for the $25 million budgeted earthquake thriller "Aftershock," Dominik Moll's Vincent Cassell starrer "The Monk" and "My Best Enemy,...

The brainiac author of Outliers and The Tipping Point has put philosophical musing on to the bestseller lists, but what does he enjoy when he's not working up a new theory?
Malcolm Gladwell may well be the smartest guy in the room. The Sideshow Bob-haired New Yorker journalist has topped bestseller lists all over the globe with his intuitive investigations into how social forces change the way we live and interact such as Blink, The Tipping Point and Outliers. He's been namechecked by Bill Clinton, sold millions of books and is about to embark on a speaking tour of the UK. In his latest book, What The Dog Saw – a collection of his best New Yorker essays – Gladwell laterally thinks about what makes people employable; whether Enron's downfall was due to there being too much information available to curious journalists and stock analysts; and whether genius comes late, like Cezanne's,...

The teasing is over! This here is the real deal. The moment we wait all year for: The lineup for the powerful, the mighty Boston Underground Film Festival, which is set to run March 25 to April 1. Now in its 12th year, Buff shows no sign of slowing down or taking it easy. In fact, this might be their most demented and transgressive edition yet.
There are homages to Giallo horror, tributes to the grand grindhouse tradition of sleaze and exploitation, sex and violence galore — both separately and together — plus, a resurrected ’80s slasher classic that all combine into an epic celebration of everything that is vicious and twisted in this world. But, in a fun way, ya know.
Alas, I haven’t seen any of the feature films that are playing this year, so I can’t offer any special recommendations of those. Although, there are many (most) that I...

There is a lot of music out there, far more than even the most dedicated fan can take in. That inevitably means that good and sometimes great music goes unheard and unrecognized.Take the case of one Barry Dransfield. I knew Barry’s name. I had read of his music here and there, probably in Dirty Linen, the kind of niche music rag that focused on English hippies who played the traditional music of their forefathers. I even owned a bit of his music. Barry’s grinning visage stares out from under a top hat on the cover of Richard Thompson’s 1972...
