It’s time for a new episode of the Awfully Good Horror Movies video series, and in this one we’re looking back at one of the least popular installments in my beloved Friday the 13th franchise. That’s the tenth entry, Jason X (watch it Here), also known as “the one where Jason goes to space”. To hear all about it, check out the video embedded above!
Directed by Jim Isaac from a screenplay written by Todd Farmer (and some uncredited rewriters), Jason X has the following synopsis: The year is 2455. The Place is Old Earth. Once the shimmering blue jewel of the galaxy, Old Earth is now a contaminated planet abandoned for centuries. Yet humans have returned to the deadly place that they once fled. Not to live, but to research the ancient rusting artifacts of the bygone civilizations that caused this environmental disaster. And little does the...

Tara Talbot (Victoria Sanchez) draws a crowd wherever she goes in Wolf Girl. Everyone’s jaws naturally slacken whenever she walks into a room. And for her entire life, Tara has been okay with others’ stares and gasps — after all, people pay good money to see the infamous “Wolf Girl” in Harley Dune’s traveling freak-show. Yet, something has changed in Tara. The social alienation that comes with her “werewolf syndrome” has finally gotten to her, and she now wishes to be anything but different.
While promoted as a werewolf-horror movie, this Canadian-Romanian production quickly reveals itself to be a coming-of-age tale with only occasional moments of terror to qualify its genre classification. Lori Lansens’ screenplay comes much closer to being a gothic allegory with heavy psychological overtones. The story puts an emphasis on not only Tara’s longing and loneliness, but also the inner workings of characters on the other side of the cage,...

"The world is strange..." Indican Pictures has released a trailer for a funky indie film titled Poor Boy, from filmmaker Robert Scott Wildes. This actually premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival and New Hampshire Film Festival back in 2016, but it has been waiting for a release and is finally going to hit a few cinemas this year. Poor Boy is about two misfit redneck brothers who run various cash scams in the desert dreaming of getting out. When the bank threatens to repossess their junky home in the Nevada desert, they "cook up an epic con to finally leave their dusty town behind and sail off into the sunset." Lou Taylor Pucci and Dov Tiefenbach star as the two brothers, and the cast includes Justin Chatwin, Amanda Crew, Pat Healy, Amy Ferguson, Dale Dickey, plus Michael Shannon as a sad rodeo clown. This looks a bit too insane. Here's the...

In today’s film news roundup, Margo Martindale becomes a mob boss, Kevin Tsujihara is selected as a commencement speaker and the homeless woman project “Landing Up” gets distribution.
Castings
Margo Martindale is joining Tiffany Haddish, Elisabeth Moss and Melissa McCarthy in the mob drama “The Kitchen” for New Line Cinema and DC Entertainment.
“Straight Outta Compton” writer Andrea Berloff will direct from her own script, based on the comic book series by Ollie Masters and Ming Doyle from DC Entertainment’s Vertigo imprint. The movie will mark Berloff’s feature directorial debut. Michael De Luca is producing the film.
“The Kitchen” follows a group of Irish mobsters sent to prison. The wives take over their jailed spouses’ organized crime operation to become the most ruthless and powerful gangsters in 1970s Hell’s Kitchen. At your wit’s end and you have nowhere else to go, what do you do? Obviously, you become a thief and a robber, and eventually become so good at that that now other con-men start coming to you for help and you start robbing them.
Much easier said than done, at least what the cast of Poor Boy can agree with. First time director Robert Scott Wildes shows off his directing chops in Poor Boy, a film that follows two brothers as they continue a series of robberies in order to survive – until one day they come across a woman who threatens their home and livelihood. Faced with trouble with the law and with other con-men, the two brothers resort to making the greatest heist of all as they try to get away scot-free.

Robert Scott Wildes’ debut feature film Poor Boy has its world premiere next week at the Tribeca Film Festival in the Viewpoints section. Lou Taylor Pucci, Dov Tiefenbach, Michael Shannon, Dale Dickey, Pat Healy, Amy Ferguson, Amanda Crew and Justin Chatwin star in the pic, which is being described as a darkly nuanced, adrenaline-filled caper set in a modern western landscape. The exclusive first look gives off a vibe of a kind of over-anxious optimism in the desert as…...

Filmmaker Matt Sadowski and his leading man Dov Tiefenbach took on the conventional romantic comedy and all its artifice and won with the independent Canadian feature Pretend We’re Kissing. Set proudly in Toronto, Tiefenbach brilliantly takes on the role of a reserved and socially phobic man who hopes to finally make a match with a girl (Tommie-Amber Pirie) who seems open to him. She’s patient and encouraging, but there are many obstacles in their way including an alt-babe roommate played by Zoe Kravitz. So they take it outdoors and into Toronto and onto the island where they are stranded overnight […]...

Meet Robert R. Mutt (Josh Peace), a simple 30 something-year old from Riverside, Canada who serves as the main character and anti-hero of You Might As Well Live. He is innocent, and somewhat confused. Think of an older Canadian version of Napoleon Dynamite and you have Robert. We are introduced to this interesting fellow when he attempts to commit suicide by drowning himself. He is unsuccessful in his attempt and is subsequently placed in a mental hospital. After showing the doctors and orderlies that he is actually a really happy individual, he is kicked out of the hospital and forced to return back to “normal” society.
When Robert returns home he is greeted angrily by his family who think he’s a retard, and his neighbor and former Cub Scout troop leader, Mr. Steinke (Stephen McHattie) who believes Robert is a pervert. Robert is basically forced out of town because of...

Are you awake? Horror fans will see some familiar plot points here and might just get a little drowsy. However, there are some bits that do seem like happy dreams in the film.s finale. Danny Sloan (Dylan Purcell) is a student whose girlfriend has just moved out. He is visiting his friend Billy (Dov Tiefenbach) who is in a court ordered drug rehab program. Billy suggests that Danny check out the .psycho ward. before leaving the hospital. What he finds is a sleeping beauty in the form of Laura (Cherilyn Wilson). She.s under the care of Dr. Corso (Timothy Bottoms) as she is in a constant dream state and only awakens occasionally. It.s love at first sight...

This was the premiere of Parasomnia and the Director Bill Malone (Fear.com, House on Haunted Hill) was present to tell us that the inspiration for his movie came as he was watching the Cabinet of Dr Caligari (1920). Also eating popcorn were cast members Dylan Purcell, Cherilyn Wilson, Patrick Kilpartrick, Jeffrey Combs, Timothy Bottoms and Cinematographer Christian Sebaldt. Parasomnia is a Sleeping Beauty legend reinvention with dashes of Beetlejuice and Pan's Labyrinth. Despite a fine performance from Patrick Kilpatrick as the evil hypnotist, Dr Volpe ( a performance so good, I little bird tells me it got him picked up for the new Mixed Martial Arts project by the Argentinean fight man Hector Echavarria), and some very stylish camera work, the film as a whole is somewhat patchy in the story and the character development department.
