Earlier this month, The Bricklayer, the latest action film from Cliffhanger and The Long Kiss Goodnight director Renny Harlin, was given a theatrical, On Demand, and Digital release. We’ve previously shared interviews with the film’s stars Aaron Eckhart and Nina Dobrev, and now JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray has sat down for an interview with Harlin himself! The primary focus of this interview is The Bricklayer, of course, but it also branches out with mentions of other Harlin projects like The Long Kiss Goodnight and Deep Blue Sea. You can check it out in the embed above.
Bumbray really enjoyed The Bricklayer, giving the film a 7/10 review you can read at This Link. If you’d like to watch the movie, you can do so on Amazon.

On the outskirts of Paris, in a vast, industrial-looking studio in Bry-sur-Marne, the clocks have turned back to the 1770s. Opulent decor — gilded furniture, flower-adorned curtains and marble everywhere — fills the soundstage.
The atmosphere is studious on the set of “Marie-Antoinette,” a lavish French-produced costume drama created, co-written and executive produced by Deborah Davis. She’s delivering a feminist take on an infamous historical figure, best-known for apocryphally advising the starving masses to eat cake. We all know how that ended.
On screen, Marie-Antoinette hasn’t been treated better than she was at the guillotine, where she’s often depicted as a villain or a frivolous airhead.
“I found the fighter, and I loved being with her all the way through her battles,” says Davis, the Oscar-nominated writer of “The Favourite,” which focused on another queen, England’s Anne.

Fans widely saw 2012’s Dredd as the movie that finally got Judge Dredd right. The 1995 Sylvester Stallone film was a notable flop, with Stallone’s career taking years to recover, and many thought the idea of making a movie based on the 2000 A.D character wasn’t going to be in the cards. However, the 2012 film, which starred Karl Urban in the lead opposite Olvia Thirlby and Lena Headey, was adored by fans and is considered one of the best sci-fi action films in recent years. Yet, it was a financial bust, and behind the scenes, there was a lot of drama involving the credited director, Pete Travis, and writer-producer Alex Garland.
Like The Raid: Redemption, Dredd takes its approach to action floor-by-floor in a dilapidated apartment complex. With bullets whizzing by, drugs consumed, and a bounty on the heads of our heroes, Travis’ film takes the title character beyond his limits.

(Welcome to Tales from the Box Office, our column that examines box office miracles, disasters, and everything in between, as well as what we can learn from them.)
When a movie is initially released, it feels like its financial performance is the biggest measuring stick to determine its success. But we have countless examples of films that failed in their day only to become stone-cold classics that had a rich life well beyond their opening weekend. Let us never forget that "The Thing" and "Blade Runner" both had to open against "E.T." but they were not lost to the sands of time. But sometimes, the sting of failure cuts deeper because absolutely everything seemed right, and yet, it doesn't click with moviegoers. Such was the case with 2012's "Dredd," a movie so good that its relative disappointment still hurts a full decade later.

Banijay Rights, the global distribution arm of Banijay, has licensed eight-part historical drama “Marie Antoinette” to BBC First in Australia.

As production days notch upward across Paris, crews both local and international can sometimes find themselves competing not only for personnel and materials but also with a separate industry that predates the invention of the camera by several hundred years – the tourist trade.
In 2019, France was the world’s leading travel destination, hosting 90 million international visitors. Though obviously such numbers took a substantial hit when global travel tapered off in early 2020, much of the infrastructure and protocols meant to serve that older industry have very much remained in place.
To see one such challenge this creates, one need only look to the Château de Versailles, which keeps traditional museum hours, remaining open to the public six days a week. As the producers behind the upcoming Canal Plus series “Marie Antoinette” quickly learned – and those prepping the Johnny Depp-led, Maïwenn-directed Louis Xv project set to shoot there later this...

The four-part series, written by Chris Brandon (“Red Rock”), stars James Nesbitt as a veteran detective in Northern Ireland going into his own dark past to try and solve a cold case.
“Bloodlands” will bow as an Acorn TV Original in the U.S. and Canada this fall soon after its U.K. premiere on BBC One. The series is the first commission for Hat Trick Mercurio Television (Htm), the U.K. production company co-owned by Mercurio and Hat Trick.
Don Klees, senior VP of programming, Acorn TV, said: “After Acorn TV’s success with ‘Line of Duty,’ we’re thrilled to partner with Jed Mercurio again as well as Hat Trick and talented writer Chris Brandon to bring this excellent crime thriller to U.

When a suicide note is discovered in an empty car pulled from the sea, veteran detective Tom Brannick draws a link to an infamous case about a series of mysterious disappearances whose trail went cold years before. As he wages an obsessive campaign to solve it, he becomes embroiled in an investigation that leads him deep into his own dark past and the troubled history of his country.
“Bloodlands” stars James Nesbitt in a drama that shows how the traumas of the past continue to reverberate in the present. You know what movie kicks ass? Dredd. No, not that Stallone film from the ‘90s (although it might be worth watching after a few beers), I’m talking about the Karl Urban version from 2012. Everything about it just worked. The action, visual style and simple plot. Even the trailer’s a real banger. And now that I remember, the 3D was really cool as well, particularly during the slo-mo scenes.
It became sort of an instant cult classic, too. Despite a modest $50 million budget though, Dredd earned just $41 million worldwide. Fans demanded a sequel, but it wasn’t financially viable and while nothing has come to fruition yet, that hasn’t stopped folks from continuing to campaign for a follow up.

10 Best Non-Superhero Comic-Book Movies of the 2010s, From ‘Atomic Blonde’ to ‘Snowpiercer’ (Photos)
Superhero movies, it has been (accurately) said, rule the box office. But although billions of dollars are made every year adapting comic books about costumed vigilantes, there is a whole universe of comic-book storytelling that frequently goes unexplored. Human dramas, light comedies, sci-fi and action comics alike, these works are frequently brought to the screen but sometimes overlooked by mainstream audiences who equate comics with the superhero genre. We were paying attention. These are the non-superhero comic book films that moved us and thrilled us this decade.

James Nesbitt has been cast as the lead in new BBC One detective drama Bloodlands, which represents the first commission for Bodyguard creator Jed Mercurio’s production company.
Dubbed an “Irish noir,” Nesbitt will play Northern Irish police detective Tom Brannick who connects a suicide note with an infamous cold case with enormous personal significance. The discovery sparks an explosive hunt for a legendary assassin.
Bloodlands is written by newcomer Chris Brandon, who has only penned a handful of episodes of TV3’s Irish police drama Red Rock, and is Hat Trick Mercurio Television’s debut commission.
Hmt Television was set up in 2015 and is co-owned by Mercurio and Hat Trick Productions, the Jimmy Mulville-run indie behind shows including Have I Got News For You and Matt LeBlanc’s Golden Globe-winning Episodes.
Mercurio, Mulville and Mark Redhead are the executive producers for Htm, while Tommy Bulfin will executive produce for the BBC.

Before Alex Garland became one of the best science-fiction directors working today (see “Ex Machina” and “Annihilation”), he was best known as the screenwriter of such films as “28 Days Later,” “Sunshine,” “Never Let Me Go,” and “Dredd.” The latter was released in 2012 with Karl Urban in the leading role. While “Dredd” was released with Pete Travis credited as director, it’s common knowledge in the industry that it was Garland who saved the movie after Travis lost control of the project in post-production.
Karl Urban confirmed as much in March 2018 when he told JoBlo, “A huge part of the success of ‘Dredd’ is in fact due to Alex Garland and what a lot of people don’t realize is that Alex Garland actually directed that movie.”
“Dredd” was not a box office hit at the time of release but has become a beloved cult favorite action movie in the years since.

Alex Garland and Judge Dredd have officially gone their separate ways. Not that we can say we’re particularly surprised, mind you.
The filmmaker, best known for his work on top-tier sci-fi movies in the vein of Ex Machina and Annihilation, reportedly worked extensively on the 2012 Dredd, yet received no credit for his endeavor. Instead, it was Pete Travis’ name on the masthead, and subsequent reports have indicated that Travis was ostensibly “prohibited” from participating in the editing process due to creative disagreements.
What followed was an “unorthodox collaboration” between Travis and Garland leading up to release, but despite his significant contribution, Garland was essentially robbed of a co-director credit. So, you can’t blame the filmmaker when he says that he currently has no intention of ever returning to the Dredd franchise. Not now, and perhaps not ever.
No. It was a pretty crude experience, for a bunch of reasons.

He’s known as judge, jury, and executioner on the streets of Mega-City One, but to fans across the world, Karl Urban’s Dredd is nothing short of a square-jawed legend.
Back in 2012, Urban and director Pete Travis brought us a brutal and hardcore rendition of the leather-clad lawman that unfortunately fizzled out at the box office. And that’s despite strong reviews from critics and viewers alike. It’s a testimony to Travis’ direction, then, that Dredd has since gone on to become become a real cult classic, and one need only take a dive into the Wgtc archives to realize that Karl Urban continues to be asked about the wider world of Mega-City One and when he may return.
But with a spinoff TV series now in the works, one that’ll go under the title Judge Dredd: Mega-City One, Urban’s performance has been thrust into the spotlight once again.

I've heard a few times over the years from people that Alex Garland (Ex Machina, Annihilation) was the person who actually directed Dredd, not Pete Travis. Well, in a recent interview with JoBlo, Karl Urban confirmed that this is actually true!
“A huge part of the success of Dredd is in fact due to Alex Garland and what a lot of people don’t realize is that Alex Garland actually directed that movie.”
You may or may not remember the rumors of Pete Travis being removed from the film and barred from the editing room. Well, that apparently actually happened and Garland took over. Dredd was such a great movie, and now we know one of the reasons why. It just wasn't Garland's great script, it was also his directing skills.
Karl went on to say that he's still open to reprising his role on the Judge Dredd series Mega-City One,...

Rumors have persisted for years that the making of “Dredd,” the 2012 science-fiction film starring Karl Urban, was plagued by confrontations between Lionsgate and director Pete Travis in the editing room. The studio apparently disliked the direction Travis was taking the movie so much that he was forced out of post-production. The rumor has never been confirmed until now.

Urban recently spoke with JoBlo about his hopes of continuing the franchise in a “Dredd” sequel, and he credited Alex Garland as one of the reasons the first movie has become such a cult classic. Earlier this year, Im Global had entered a partnership with Rebellion to create a TV series based on the comic-book property to be titled Judge Dredd: Mega-city One. As soon as the news broke, fans of Pete Travis' 2012 action sci-fi adaptation Dredd were eager to know if Karl Urban would once again don the character's signature helmet in an effort to lay down the law for the... Jason Kingsley, executive producer on the upcoming TV revival Judge Dredd: Mega-City One, has reaffirmed that negotiations with Karl Urban, who donned that iconic helmet for Pete Travis’ 2012 reboot, are indeed underway.
Word of Urban possibly reprising the role of judge, jury, and executioner first surfaced online just yesterday, when the actor himself told those in attendance at last weekend’s Star Trek Las Vegas Convention that he would “love” to suit up as Mega-City One’s no-nonsense law enforcer.
And though the casting of Karl Urban would certainly fire Judge Dredd: Mega-City One into the mainstream spotlight – if it isn’t there already – Jason Kingsley told Screen Geek that for the sake of Dredd fans, he’s more concerned with the actual quality of the show itself, stressing that “this needs to be done right” after so many false starts.

Karl Urban has made no secret that he would be willing to return to his role as Judge Dredd, and with his recent comments at the Star Trek Convention in Las Vegas last week where he mentioned he was more than interested, it’s been revealed he is, in fact, in talks to reprise his role for a new TV Series.

The series, titled Judge Dredd Mega-City One, was announced back in March and will focus on a team of Judges as they encounter the challenges in a world in which east-coast cities have merged into a giant megalopolis. Urban revealed that he was indeed in discussions in returning to the role as long as the material gave him something to do.

Pete Travis’ Dredd came out almost five years ago, and while Karl Urban didn’t exactly blow anyone away as the eponymous supercop (not counting the bad guys he killed), people liked the movie and they liked seeing his ever-present scowl underneath Judge Dredd’s helmet. Dredd will probably never get a sequel, but Im Global and video game publisher Rebellion have been developing a TV show based on the character and his world called Judge Dredd: Mega City One, and Urban recently revealed that he’s been in talks with the studios about appearing in it as Dredd himself. That comes from TrekMovie (via Collider), which quotes Urban as saying he had told Im Global that “if they write the material and give Dredd something to do and give him a function,” then he would “love” to be a part of the project.

Pete Travis' Dredd was a very welcome return of the famed and feared Judge, and also one hell of a fun action flick, unfortunately, it didn't exactly impress at the box-office and hopes for a Dredd franchise seemed rather unlikely. The film has gone on to become somewhat of a cult favourite and has kept talk of the franchise alive in the years since its release. Earlier... Read More...

I remember going into 2012’s “Dredd” with very low expectations. After all, this was a reboot of “Judge Dredd,” a terrible ’90s action movie starring Sylvester Stallone as a tough street judge. What we got instead with “Dredd” was a genuinely visionary film. Director Pete Travis made something beautifully artful out of the savagery he depicted onscreen. Paul Leonard‘s exalting techno soundtrack also gave the film an avant-garde edginess that fit perfectly with the film’s atmosphere.

With a seemingly endless amount of streaming options — not only the titles at our disposal, but services themselves — we’ve taken it upon ourselves to highlight the titles that have recently hit platforms. Every week, one will be able to see the cream of the crop (or perhaps some simply interesting picks) of streaming titles (new and old) across platforms such as Netflix, iTunes, Amazon, and more (note: U.S. only). Check out our rundown for this week’s selections below.
City of Tiny Lights (Pete Travis)
Small-time private detective Tommy Akhtar (Riz Ahmed) has all the swagger of a hard-boiled snoop: leather jacket on his shoulders and cigarette in his mouth, leaning against London architecture in the darkened night. His office resides above some shops, he makes friendly with local convenience store owner Mrs. Elbaz (Myriam Acharki), and asks new clients where they found him because he’s not advertising in the paper.

After years spent petitioning for a live-action continuation to Pete Travis and Karl Urban’s criminally underseen Dredd movie, six weeks ago, fans uncovered the next best thing when Im Global and Rebellion nailed down plans for Judge Dredd: Mega-City One, a TV series that will signal the return of John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra’s leather-clad lawman.
Little is currently known about the tone and direction of Mega-City One, only that it will honor the source material by delivering an adult-oriented take on that famous judge, jury, and executioner, who attempts to uphold some semblance of law and order in a metropolis teeming with 400 million citizens – every one of them a potential criminal.
Filming on Judge Dredd: Mega-City One is yet to get underway, and Rebellion CEO and Dredd producer Jason Kingsley believes the show is at least two years out from its anticipated premiere. But when it eventually does march onto the small screen, it’ll seemingly merge the “macabre with the insane.”
Speaking with Sfa Magazine (with a tip of the hat to GamesRadar), Kingsley highlighted the inherent advantages of long-form storytelling, and how it’ll ultimately benefit this particular adaptation of Dredd.
Long-form storytelling makes showing Mega-City One and its inhabitants much easier. Trying to fit all of that into a two-hour movie is very hard. My best guess is that it’s at least two years away. But we’re so early in the process that things could happen a bit faster, or much more slowly.
That two-year window is simply an estimation on Kingsley’s part, and there are undoubtedly factors in play that could accelerate – or indeed slow – the creative process over the next 12 to 18 months.
Dark fantasy elements are one area that would be great to explore. The show will combine the macabre with the insane and the light-hearted. It’s a big place, after all, with 400 million stories to tell.
John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra’s square-jawed judge, jury, and executioner is officially making tracks toward the small screen, just don’t expect Judge Dredd: Mega-City One to premiere until 2019 – you know, assuming Im Global doesn’t get the ball rolling sooner than expected.
