On Monday night, all eyes in Cannes will be on the launch of “The Apprentice,” the high-profile drama that stars Sebastian Stan as a young Donald Trump. The filmmakers and stars haven’t done any press on the ground at Cannes ahead of the film’s world premiere, and few have seen it, with plot details shrouded in mystery.
But one person who has seen it is Dan Snyder, the billionaire former owner of the Washington Commanders who is an investor in “The Apprentice.” And he isn’t happy.
Behind the scenes, a nasty battle has played out between the Snyder-backed company Kinematics and the filmmakers over the creative direction of the film. “The Apprentice,” directed by Ali Abbasi, covers Trump’s early years when he was mentored by political fixer Roy Cohn (Jeremy Strong) and his marriage to his first wife, Ivana (Maria Bakalova).

Welcome to ElectionLine’s A View From Abroad series, in which we speak with media figures who don’t live in America but keep a close eye on its politics. Every few weeks, these smart observers will provide a unique perspective on what promises to be a fraught and unpredictable campaign for the White House. This week, our interview is with Richard Madan, the award-winning Washington D.C. correspondent for Canada’s CBC News.
When Richard Madan and his crew get out of Washington D.C. to talk to American voters, they sometimes stick a tiny Canadian flag on the viewfinder of their camera. It’s a signal to contributors that they come in peace and Canadian pleasantries — and, by and large, it’s effective.
“When you go into these unfriendly crowds, the second I say we’re Canadian television, any animosity instantly disappears. Generally speaking, Americans have positive views of Canadians,...

Keep reading to find out more…
“The trick is be patient,” Arthur told People. “You’ve got to be patient because they do something and you just got to make sure you capture it. With the Queen, it was the same. You knew that you’d get a smile eventually, but you had to be patient.”
One example he shared was when Prince George was only 3 years old, visiting Canada with his parents in 2016.

It’s altogether likely that many non-Indigenous people knew nothing about the abuse and disappearances of Native American children that occurred over decades in residential Indian schools throughout North America until those outages inspired a wrenchingly potent subplot last year for the Taylor Sheridan-produced TV series “1923.” But the truth behind that fact-based fiction is even more shocking, and infuriating, as detailed in “Sugarcane,” the remarkable film that received a well-deserved jury prize for documentary direction at this year’s Sundance Film Festival.
Co-directors Emily Kassie and Indigenous filmmaker Julian Brave NoiseCat show restraint and empathy while cataloguing the horrors that were endemic at the now-shuttered St. Joseph’s Mission residential school near the Sugarcane Reservation of Williams Lake in British Columbia. But their disciplined approach to their material actually makes the movie even more effective in its cumulative impact, especially during interviews with survivors of St. Joseph’s — including...

There’s a moment in Sugarcane, a gut-punch of a documentary, when a central subject relays his shattering experiences with Catholic-run Native American schools in Canada. He goes quiet after testifying to a somber-looking clergyman. The camera stays with both people, allowing us to observe years of pain in the survivor’s crestfallen face and the sorrowful posture of the listener. “Being sorry is the first step,” the subject says after the priest apologizes for the role the Catholic Church played in abusing Native populations. “You have to take action.”
At the heart of Julian Brave NoiseCat and Emily Kassie’s powerful film is this question of action. How do you act when faced with violence from the past? What does accountability look like? The documentary, which premiered in competition at Sundance, braids three narratives connected to the discovery of unmarked graves near St. Joseph’s Mission, an Indian residential...

It’s impossible to overstate the trauma that is explored throughout Sugarcane, Julian Brave NoiseCat and Emily Kassie’s harrowing documentary on the sins of St. Joseph’s Mission in British Columbia and the Canadian Indian residential school system as a whole. Spurred by the discovery of over 200 unmarked graves at the former Kamloops Indian Residential School in May 2021, NoiseCat and Kassie speak with investigators and survivors of the schools, one of them Julian Brave NoiseCat’s own father: Ed Archie NoiseCat.
Since the the 19th century, the Canadian government forced Indigenous children to attend boarding schools that were primarily run by the Catholic Church. If the pronounced goal was something like cultural acclimation/assimilation, the price many kids paid was too great to calculate. Widespread allegations of abuse, rape, and torture were largely ignored for generations. Rosalin Sam, a survivor of St. Joseph’s Mission, recounts the circular direction of denied responsibility.

Canada has struck a $100 million deal with Google to pay local publishers for news snippets shared or repurposed on its local platform.
The agreement for Google to make an annual payment of $100 million follows Canada passing into law Bill C-18, also known as the Online News Act, to compel U.S. digital giants to negotiate commercial licensing deals with Canadian publishers for their local platforms.
“We have found a path forward to answer Google’s questions about their process and the Act. Google wanted certainty about the amount of compensation it would have to pay to Canadian news outlets,” Canadian Heritage Minister Pascale St-Onge said in the House of Commons on Wednesday.
“As part of this framework, Google will contribute $100 million in financial support annually, indexed to inflation, for a wide range of news businesses across the country, including independent news businesses and those from Indigenous and official-language minority communities.

Trevor Noah’s seat at The Daily Show remains vacant, but the former host has moved on.
Beginning today, the erudite comedian will release a weekly Spotify podcast, which he’s titled What Now? With Trevor Noah. As he explains it, he’ll sit down with thought leaders of all kinds — actors, athletes, scientists, politicians and CEOs — for an intimate, wide-ranging conversation that he hopes will be both illuminating and timely. His first guest is Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. He’ll also offer commentary on newsworthy topics, according to the audio giant.
Between stops on his global stand-up tour, Noah Zoomed in to discuss what he misses most (and least) about The Daily Show, the times in recent months that he really wished he still had a platform and what he intends to do with this format that he couldn’t do with the last one.

Actor Matthew Perry, who rose to stardom with his portrayal of Chandler Bing in the iconic sitcom ‘Friends’, breathed his last as he died at the age of 54 at his Los Angeles home. His portrayal broke new grounds, and over the years has become a mark of the 1990s.

One of the reasons Perry fits in so well as Chandler is his proximity to the character in some sense. Like Chandler, Perry’s parents too separated when he was an infant.

“We should have those hostages released and then we can talk,” President Joe Biden said Monday as two more hostages were let go by Hamas amid further rising tensions and deaths in the Middle East.
Speaking at a D.C. event to announce an investment in regional tech hubs and to discuss the economy, Biden’s remark came in response to a reporter’s question about whether the U.S. supports a “hostages for ceasefire deal” in the ongoing Israel-Hamas war.
The release today of Nurit Cooper, 79, and Yocheved Lifshitz, 85, now confirmed by the Israeli government, dominated coverage on CNN, MSNBC, Fox News and BBC World News today. Seen online, Biden’s speech and comments were not covered live – unlike a press briefing earlier in the day by National Security Council spokesman John Kirby.
While not mentioning the hostages specifically, Biden cut short his remarks as news of their release spread.

We're more than halfway through 2023 and we've witnessed a ton of shocking (and not-so-shocking) breakups among celebrity couples. The year started off with the surprising news of longtime pair Kylie Jenner and Travis Scott (who share two kids) parting ways. Following that, Reese Witherspoon and Jim Toth shocked the world in March when they announced their "difficult decision to divorce" after nearly 12 years of marriage.
While some celebrity couples this year decided to amicably separate, like Aj McLean and wife Rochelle DeAnna McLean and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Sophie Trudeau, other splits have played out quite messily in the news. Perhaps most notable is the explosive breakup of "Vanderpump Rules" stars Tom Sandoval and Ariana Madix, plus the fallout that followed after the former's cheating affair with their costar Raquel Leviss; the entire debacle was dubbed "Scandoval." Next to them is Avril Lavigne and Mod Sun, as the...

Exclusive: Meta and Alphabet will pull back from news distribution in more countries if forced to pay for content, the CEO of leading Canadian public network CBC/Radio Canada has predicted.
Catherine Tait told Deadline she “absolutely believes” globally-focused social media giants are prepared to stop linking to news content from organizations around the world, despite the “general growth of disinformation” on the internet.
The news comes as California seeks to introduce legislation that would require platforms to pay news outlets monthly usage fees, and as the Journalism Competition and Preservation Act, which will provide protections to newspapers, broadcast stations and digital journalism outlets and give them more market power in the face of competition for advertising from the digital giants.
It also follows Meta and Alphabet choosing to stop hosting news sites in Canada and Meta’s announcement earlier this month that in December it would ‘deprecate’ Facebook News in the UK,...

North America has not yet seen the last of Taylor Swift as the country-pop singer has added six additional dates to her Eras Tour at the request of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
Taking to her social media, the singer wrote: “Turns out it’s Not the end of an era, Miami, New Orleans, Indy and Toronto: The Eras Tour is coming back to you in 2024 with @graceieabrams!”
As such, the Eras Tour will also embark to Canada and hit its concluding dates in November 2024 with six shows in Toronto and Ontario at the Rogers Centre.
However, Swift did not say these were the final dates of the tour, leaving the door open for possibly still more additions to the tour, after it makes its unexpected stop back to North American home territory following an existing 2024 itinerary that takes the Eras Tour throughout Europe.
According to ‘Variety’: “Also added...

A delay on the tarmac for a Southwest flight from Denver to Salt Lake City turned into an impromptu Taylor Swift “concert.”
As People reports, the flight was packed with Swifties who had just watched her Eras Tour performance in Denver last weekend; when flight attendants noticed a young girl who had been at the concert was upset, they devised a novel solution.
“We noticed a young girl who looked quite upset, and found out she’d just come from the Taylor Swift concert,” the flight attendant reportedly told the Associated Press. “So, we asked her what the opening song was and decided to play some of Swift’s hits.”
