After Franco Ferrara and Carlo Savina, the most active Italian film score conductor
of the 50s and 60s. Pier Luigi Urbini was born in Rome in 1929 and
studied there at the Accademia di Santa Cecilia. After starting as a
violin soloist, he made his conducting debut at the Teatro Massimo in
Palermo. He toured several countries conducting both opera and concerts
before joining the Italian film studios in 1957. In his career he
conducted for all the major Italian composers, including Fusco,
Lavagnino, Rustichelli and Piccioni. In 1961 he had the distinction of
conducting the first film score by Ennio Morricone.
