A majority of The Beatles’ songs were relatively short because that’s what fits better for radio play. Besides ‘Hey Jude’, most of their hits were three or four minutes. In one of his more experimental modes, Paul McCartney developed a 15-minute song that he got The Beatles to play with him. It’s still never been released, but the former Beatle said it could see the light someday.

Italian side Fiorentina have signed Sunderland centre half Modibo Diakite on loan for the rest of the season. (Safc.com)
The Frenchman was one of 14 players brought to The Stadium of Light by former Head Coach Paolo Di Canio in the summer, but has made only 8 appearances in a red and white shirt. He follows fellow summer signing Cabral out of the club, who also moved to Serie A with Genoa a fortnight ago.
The former Lazio man could be used as part of a swap for Marcos Alonso in the summer, who moved the opposite way at the start of this transfer window by current Head Coach Gus Poyet.
The 26 year old isn’t the only man to have left Wearside on loan today, with youngster Duncan Watmore heading north of the border to join Spl side Hibernian.

Championship promotion hopefuls Nottingham Forest host Premier League strugglers West Ham United anxious to improve their record against the Londoners at the City Ground.
Billy Davies’s Reds will not get a better opportunity to put right two wins from the last ten home meetings with the Hammers than on Sunday lunchtime. Sam Allardyce has a defensive crisis on his hands – one made all the worse by Johnny Heitinga snubbing a move from Everton.
These sides last faced one another on the banks of the Trent early on in West Ham’s last promotion campaign of 2011-12. Big Sam and his team are League Cup semi-finalists, but if they are to progress in the other domestic competition then they will have to do it without several key names.

Nottingham Forest climbed back into the Championship playoff places as goals from Greg Halford and Andy Reid kept up their record of never losing a home game to Qpr. Harry Redknapp’s side missed the chance to go top at the City Ground.
Halford worked Rob Green in the Hoops goal for Forest after an uneventful opening 15 minutes. The versatile Reds player then blazed over following good work from Djamel Abdoun wide left.
Benoit Assou-Ekotto tried his luck from range up from left back at the other end, but Karl Darlow. Henri Lansbury then won a tackle and the Forest midfielder fired into the side netting.
Just before half an hour the Reds went ahead through utility man Halford. He headed home a peach of a cross from Abdoun. Niko Kranjcar led the response for Qpr, curling wide after some silky footwork.

Nottingham Forest have never lost a home game in any competition to Qpr. If Harry Redknapp’s Hoops make history on Boxing Day then, their reward may be to top The Championship table.
Should Burnley fail to win, Qpr can go above them with victory at the City Ground – provided they match or better a potential Leicester City win against Reading. Billy Davies’s Reds have drawn three of their last four outings and have failed to score in the last two.
The Hoops are looking to bounce back from their only home league defeat of the campaign against promotion rivals Leicester. Both teams have suspensions to contend with.

Forest frontman Darius Henderson starts a ban after being sent off in the goalless draw with Birmingham City. Long-term absentees Dexter Blackstock, club captain Chris Cohen and centre back Kelvin Wilson are also out.

Nottingham Forest vs Reading
Friday, 29 November 2013
City Ground, Nottingham
Kick-off: 19:45 GMT
Referee: Stuart Attwell
Reading travel to Nottingham Forest on Friday knowing a win would take them above their opponents and into the SkyBet Championship playoff places ahead of the weekend’s fixtures.
The Royals come to the City Ground without a win in four matches and an away record of just two points from their last 12, however. Nigel Adkins’s outfit have only gone back to Berkshire with all three points from one of their last five visits to Nottingham.
Hosts Forest meanwhile can temporarily climb a place to fourth with a point or better. Billy Davies’s side are buoyed by a recent victory at East Midlands rivals Leicester City and a battling draw with table toppers Burnley last time out.

Sunderland have slapped a £1 million price tag on the head of midfielder David Vaughan, according to the Sunderland Echo.
The Welsh international has only one year remaining on his current deal at the Stadium of Light, and this has prompted the Black Cats to look to sell Vaughan.
The 30-year-old has struggled to make an impression on the Sunderland squad with the majority of his appearances, being from the substitute bench.
Although the Wearside club have brought in more than a handful of players already this summer, Dicanio continues to make plans to overhaul his squad. The Black Cats are still desperate to receive a moderate fee for Vaughan after signing him on a free two years ago.
The midfielder scored a memorable goal in Sunderland’s derby day victory over Newcastle but Paolo Di Canio is still desperate to add more quality to his side.

Around two weeks ago, after a 1-0 defeat from Manchester United, Sunderland manager Martin O’Neill was relieved from his duties at the Stadium of Light. Chairman and Owner Ellis Short acted swiftly in appointing O’Neill’s successor, with former Swindon manager Paolo Di Canio taking the reigns less than 24 hours after his departure. This appointment made front and back page headlines across the country, with the media criticising Sunderland on their appointment of a self-proclaimed fascist. Despite that, there was an eager sense of anticipation surrounding the Stadium of Light club on their new manager, with the Mackem fans indicating they liked Di Canio’s passion for the game.
Things got off to a difficult start for Di Canio though, as his Sunderland side were beaten 2-1 by European Champions Chelsea. Then came the big one, the Wear-Tyne Derby. All the ‘experts’ predicted a Newcastle win, but right...

Home Nations rivals Scotland and Wales will face-off tomorrow at Hampden Park, with both sides needing a win to keep any hope alive of qualifying for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
The two bottom sides in Group A met last October at the Millenium Stadium with Wales emerging victorious thanks to a Gareth Bale double. James Morrison had earlier scored for the Scots and Steven Fletcher had a goal disallowed but like much of Craig Levein’s tenure as Scotland manager luck was not on their side.
Chris Coleman also has not endured the best of times as a national team manager. However, he picked up his second win as Wales manager in February when Austria were beaten 2-1. This gives them some momentum going into this match. Scotland also have a new sense of optimism with former Celtic boss Gordon Strachan now at the helm and he will be...

Swansea’s 100% record in the Premier League season will be put to the test as they host Martin O’Neill’s Sunderland at the Liberty Stadium this afternoon.
The home team have exceeded all expectations with a maximum six points notched up after their opening two games against Qpr and West Ham but today’s fixture could be a trickier task for Michael Laudrup’s team.
Whilst it’s early days for Swansea, the more direct style that has been introduced by the Dane is showing some real promise. Eight goals scored already far surpasses Swansea’s record this time last season where not a single goal was scored after their first four outings.
Sunderland will be well rested after their game against Reading was called off last week due to a waterlogged pitch however new signings Adam Johnson, Steven Fletcher and Louis Saha were given some game time together...

Arsenal officially begin life without club captain Robin van Persie this afternoon, after the Dutchman completed his £24million move to Old Trafford yesterday.
Manager Arsene Wenger is losing his star players at an alarmingly rapid rate, with Samri Nasri and Gael Cliche moving for pastures new last season, Alex Song now looks to be on his way too.
This game will go some way to answering a lot of questions, namely “are Arsenal a one man team?”
Without van Persie’s 30 league goals last season, Arsenal probably wouldn’t have finished third, and it remains to be seen if the Gunners can replicate their top four finish this season without their talismatic captain.
It’s not all doom and gloom though.
Arsene Wenger has brought in three new signings so far in the mould of Podolski, Giroud and Cazorla, but they...

Teams news ahead of tonight’s Fa Cup Fourth round replay between Middlesbrough and Sunderland at the Riverside Stadium. Kick-off for the cup tie is at 7.45pm and a winner must be decided on the night with extra time and penalties if required.
The game is screening live on ITV 1 tonight and the winners will face Arsenal at their home ground in the next round.
Middlesbrough have a few injury concerns heading into tonight’s match with duo Marvin Emnes and Faris Haroun more major doubts with hamstring problems.
Barry Robson (bruised hand) is also a doubt and Scott McDonald (whose season could be over with a knee injury) definitely misses out. Former Sunderland favourite Julio Arca returns from suspension and should play.
Keeper Danny Coyne (calf), midfielders Nicky Robson (knee) and Merouane Zemmama (hernia surgery) and striker Bart Ogbeche (hamstring) all miss out.

Bolton Wanderers versus Sunderland
22 October 2011
Reebok Stadium
Attendance: 24,349
On loan Nicklas Bendtner scored in stoppage time to wrap up Sunderland’s much needed win at the Reebok Stadium.
Stephane Sessegnon broke the deadlock when he swivelled and shot first time past Jussi Jaaskelainen.
Darren Pratley had a chance to equalise but goalkeeper Simon Mignolet stood tall and made the block.
Nicklas Bendtner made sure of the points in injury time, scoring from 10 yards after good work from
Sessegnon.
Despite losing their first four home Premier League matches so far this term, it was Bolton who started the brighter with Pratley going close to finding the net on 13 minutes.
David Ngog was released down the right and, after a good run, he squared to Pratley, but his first-time effort went just wide.

Sunderland defender Phil Bardsley says a mid table finish this season would be a great achievement for the North East club. The Wearsiders ended last season in the top half, but despite a summer of squad strengthening have started the new season with just one win in eight games.
“People have to be realistic, we’re not going to finish in the Champions League,” Bardsley told BBC Newcastle.
“Let’s just finish in the top 10 again. That would be a massive achievement.”
The pre-season overhaul of Steve Bruce’s squad saw money spent on Ipswich Town teenager Connor Wickham, Birmingham City midfielder Craig Gardner, Chunnam Dragons forward Ji Dong Won and Manchester United defender John O’Shea, while Wes Brown, David Vaughan and Sebastian Larsson were added on free transfers.
In return, the Black Cats lost Jordan Henderson to Liverpool for £20m, while Asamoah Gyan was loaned to United Arab...

Robin van Persie put in a true captain’s performance as Arsenal got a vital three points to go some way to turning around their rather dismal season, as they ran out 2-1 winners against Sunderland at the Emirates Stadium. It was a fantastic 90 minutes of football which started 29 seconds in as van Persie took the lead for the hosts. Then two magnificent free kicks – first from Sebastian Larsson, then from van Persie again completed the scoring.
There are certainly still issues for Arsene Wenger to address, but a good performance nevertheless by both teams. Sunderland fans won’t be too worried with their poor start to the season if they can replicate this performance on a more regular basis.

England recorded an unimpressive win to lift the Wembley curse and practically guarantee their place at Euro 2012. A first half goal from Ashley Young ensured victory, but Wales will be wondering what could have been after Robert Earnshaw missed an absolute sitter late on in the game. The visitors equipped themselves well, looking particularly dangerous in the second half and will count themselves extremely unlucky to come away with nothing.
FIFA’s questionable ranking system suggested an easy win for 4th placed England who took on 117th place Wales at Wembley. The Welshmen were also out of their depths financially speaking, with an overall value of £15 million compared to England’s £126 million, but this didn’t stop Montenegro and Switzerland – Capello’s men were on their worst winless streak ever at their home ground, and although qualification was almost in touching distance, they were looking to do a professional job against the visitors.
