Jason Statham is the only bit of genuine oomph in a tired tale whose digital effects could have been shot on an iPhone
There is room for debate about whether the number 4 in EXPEND4BLES – as the title is rendered on the poster – looks sufficiently like the letter A. Next time, it will be easier with EXPENDABLE5, then three movies later it should be EXPENDA8LES, and for the 50th film they can go for a classy Roman numeral to please the classicists: Expendables.
Anyway, the lumbering giants of yesteryear action-movie product are back, although given how long they have been around, the avowedly retro nature of their style is less important and has perhaps vanished altogether. Sylvester Stallone returns as the team’s leader, Barney Ross, wreathed in bonhomie and cigar smoke but with a limited presence, rather like the constitutional monarch of the Expend4bles, with his effective prime minister being Lee Christmas,...

The company, which is also behind Showtime documentary 2nd Chance, is launching One Click: Ashley Madison, hosted by Elle Fanning and Space Cadets, about a controversial British reality show that tricked people into thinking they were going into space, as the first two shows from the fund.
The fund, which moves Vespucci into originals, after partnering with the likes of Audible and Spotify, will produce ten series over the next two years.
One Click: Ashley Madison tells the inside story of the 2015 Ashley Madison hack that exposed tens of thousands of cheating spouses. Exclusive: Richard Bacon is used to reinventing himself. The British presenter was notoriously booted off iconic BBC kids show Blue Peter after being caught binging cocaine, but survived the ignominy to become a near-ubiquitous presence on UK television and radio. By 2016, Bacon relocated to America to host Nat Geo’s Explorer series and later, Fox syndicated talkshow Top 30. But it’s his latest career twist that is perhaps the most remarkable: Bacon has transformed himself from the man in front of the camera, to the one creating the content — and he already has a Universal Television Alternative Studios overall deal and three series to show for his efforts.

Ooh, isn't it nice to have Bake Off back? Sure, we're only getting it for four nights this week for a Sport Relief special series, but given how very January we feel, this is just enough to keep us happy. From the moment Sue was telling us to grease our muffin trays and grab our jugs, we were mentally sitting outside on a spring day tucking into a sponge.
Bonnie Wright, Johnny Vaughan, Michael Vaughan and Samantha Bond were on hand to show off their baking skills... or lack of them. And of course, there were plenty of brilliant moments for us to sink our teeth into (apart from the scones we'd brought along for snacking, of course). Read on for our favourite bits from the episode...
The Signature Bake - Sandwich Biscuits
We were told that sandwich biscuits are an "easy way to break in our Sport Relief bakers". Try telling them that.

Bonnie Wright was named Star Baker in tonight's episode of The Great Sport Relief Bake Off.
The Harry Potter star beat Outnumbered's Samantha Bond, cricketer Michael Vaughan and radio and television host Johnny Vaughan to win over Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood and take home the coveted apron.
"I'll wear it when I'm baking at home," Wright vowed. "I don't want to wash off the nice messages from Paul and Mary."
While Berry and Hollywood were not overly impressed with Wright's sandwich biscuits, she produced the best tarte Tatin and also wowed the judges with her showstopper cake - a recreation of the Cowes regatta.
Johnny Vaughan struggled consistently throughout the competition - largely down to the fact that for the first two rounds he accidentally used the grill setting on his oven - but left Berry and Hollywood surprised with his competent sponge in the final round.

If you're annoyed that it's still January, then don't worry - we're in for a treat tonight as The Great British Bake Off is back for its Sport Relief celebrity-packed edition!
The show will return to BBC Two this evening with Michael Vaughan, Bonnie Wright, Samantha Bond and Johnny Vaughan all doing their best to impress Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood.
While Michael Vaughan seems more interested in giving Mary Berry a big kiss on the cheek, the celebrity bakers will be tasked with whipping up some tasty treats as part of the effort to raise money for charity.
Among the foods the first four celebrities will be attempting to make are sandwiched biscuits and tarte tatin.
However, the showstopper bake - a 3D novelty cake representing a sporting event - is expected to separate out the pack, with Bond appearing to struggle with her baking in the picture above.

It's a tough ol' time for the UK sitcom right now - even TV veterans can't seem to crack the genre of late. Ben Elton - he of Blackadder and The Young Ones fame - just spewed out the critically-mauled The Wright Way for BBC One, while over on ITV, luminaries of stage and screen Sir Ian McKellen and Sir Derek Jacobi are about to indulge in the dubious pleasures of Vicious - a catty comedy that feels like it was heading for 1974 and somehow got lost along the way.
The sitcom has always been a tough nut to crack, of course - this country has produced some absolute classics, but also some absolute stinkers. This week's Friday Fiver is all about the misfires, the failures, the disasters.
Heard the phrase "So bad it's good"? Well, this bunch of 'comedies' were just plain bad.

Johnny Vaughan has played down any suggestion of a rift between him and Denise Van Outen, arguing that she must be "taking the piss" with recent comments she made about him in the press.
Vaughan's former Big Breakfast co-host has said in a couple of recent interviews that she felt "very uncomfortable" when she was reunited with him on his Capital FM breakfast show.
Van Outen also accused Vaughan of turning the volume down on her microphone when she was trying to talk. "He wouldn't let me speak, would tell me when I should and shouldn't speak, and would also constantly not mention that we were joint presenters," she said.
However, Vaughan has dismissed the comments, claiming that he doesn't even have the technical know-how to fade down a microphone.

Johnny Vaughan and Steve Brooker return to History this week with a third series of cult documentary series Mud Men. It's back. And it's even muddier.
Digital Spy caught up with Vaughany to chat about the show's surprise success, Big Breakfast nostalgia and those reports of a fall-out with Denise Van Outen.
You've got a third series of Mud Men. You must be delighted.
"It's the most successful British show on History, which is quite cool. It's two geezers farting around and I thought we were really lucky to get one series.
"It's often the case if it's fun for everyone involved that they're only the people having fun. People are sat at home thinking, 'I'm glad they're having a good time. I think it's a load of s**t'. It really rubs it in.
"There's nothing worse than people really enjoying doing a load of s**t."
Holiday shows are the worst for that.

Johnny Vaughan has revealed that he would be up for a return to The Big Breakfast.
The broadcaster fronted the Channel 4 morning show from 1997 to 2001, and joked that Megan Fox would be his preferred co-host if it were to come back.
He told Bang Showbiz: "I think she'd be great to wake up to. I just quite like the idea of waking up with Megan Fox.
"The only reason I stopped last time was we'd just had a baby and it was just impossible. It wasn't working really."

Vaughan co-hosted the show with Denise Van Outen, Kelly Brook and Liza Tarbuck during his time on the show, and said that whoever presents the series must have good chemistry.
He added: "It makes it so much easier otherwise it can just be hard work. I was lucky I always had great people to do it with.

One minute there's a Christmas present. The next minute it's taken away from you. Presumably, the sizeable army of Jonathan Creek fans found this when rumours of a 2012 Christmas special recently surfaced on the web. Alas, it turned out to be a false hope, since the main man himself Alan Davies said that the news was no more than a rumour and that nothing had been set up to compete alongside Time Lord festivities, Brucie's frosty-looking wig and Scrooge-esque happenings in Albert Square.
So what is it about Jonathan Creek that still brings the viewers back for more? The last Christmas special, The Grinning Man (broadcast in 2009) gained nearly 10 million viewers, a strong showing for the festive competition, suggesting that there was still a healthy demand for the unassuming fellah in the duffle coat. Basically, for the most part, it's a two-pronged mystery. Not only can it feature whodunnit elements,...

What a week in the world of t'showbiz - Holly Willoughby's going to the Beeb, Eamonn Holmes is staying at Sky, Johnny Vaughan's been biffed from Capital, Christine Bleakley's hosting Dancing on Ice, The Brendan Cole show (formally known as Strictly) said adios to Anita Dobson... there have been more coming and goings than Jordan's love life. I'm a Celebrity has been must have viewing once again this week - not least for the brilliantly executed slapstick gags from everyone's fave duo Ant & Dec. Ok, some are a bit cringeworthy and clearly shouldn't have made it any further than the post-show chat on the golf course, but still, we gloss over that, don't we; the constant 'Willy' [Carson] gags more than make up for it. There's something self-assured about being TV's (more)...

"Well I think Christine is a tough chick," the Irish presenter told Digital Spy. "She's very intelligent and very competent and very good at what she does. Lisa Snowdon has been rushed to hospital suffering with viral meningitis. The 38-year-old model-and-broadcaster, who previously dated Hollywood movie star George Clooney was thought to be suffering with the flu when she turned on the Christmas lights in Bond Street, London, last Thursday, November 18 but was later diagnosed with the disease.
"Lisa was feeling rotten for a good few days. On Thursday night she switched on the lights and she was clearly unwell and struggling to hold it together," a friend said. "She had flu symptoms, major aches and pains and a migraine. She then had to go on to host a dinner. But after that she just fell apart and she went to the doctor and was immediately checked into hospital. They then diagnosed her with viral meningitis."
Although Lisa has been rushed to hospital, the disease is the less serious form of meningitis, meaning she should be out...

Though never as polarizing as the Twilight series (how many people do you know that just sort of like it?), the Harry Potter films have similarly divided the character’s fan base: they of the true believers (who read the books before the films came out) and those who like consistently seeing the most popular film in America. The perfect centerpiece of this dichotomy is Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, probably the entry best liked by critics but most refuted by devotees of the books, who claim that the adaptation has missed key aspects of the original novel and harmed the overall progression of the series. Not having read any of the books (or seen the most recent film), I can only infer how much of this is true, but viewed separately from the work that spawned it, Prisoner of Azkaban is easily the best developed and most...

Thanks to having a remarkably packed schedule for Monday, I'm writing this on Sunday night, so, you know, if anything really important or notable happens sometime Monday just assume I mentioned it because I'm totally up to date with the news and happenings and not just a pop culture junkie who ignores most items of significance unless they threaten to bump my shows or become trending topics on Twitter. But seriously, I found the more I paid attention to the news coverage the more I had the tendency to get angry and corner poor, helpless people at parties ranting about either what was on the news or the way it was covered so really, it's best for everyone involved if I just keep to my little sphere of all the television I'm peripherally aware of but don't watch and the parts of the internet involving drunk text messages and cute animals doing funny things.

… Roger, McAlpine, Bagri, Laidlaw of Rothiemay and Lady Dunn. A long-lost Enid Blyton story was discovered this week, called Five Go to Switzerland. In it, five peers have to choose between giving up their membership of the jolly House of Lords and giving up their ripping non-dom status and having to pay a simply awful amount of tax in Britain instead, thanks to the new Constitutional Reform and Governance Act.
In the end, it turns out that although they won't be able to vote any more on the law of the land they don't really live in, the five will be allowed to keep their titles and their simply super coats of arms, which were always the best and obliquely lubricant and lucrative bits anyway.

'When it's perfectly Ok to talk during a film'
Is it all right to talk during a film? Of course not! My personal rule is that, as the lights dim, the audience is allowed to conclude any discussions quickly in the faintest whisper. Then silence. But it's complicated. We'd all agree that it's Ok to respond to what is happening on the screen by crying or laughing. Angie Errigo, of Empire magazine, was sitting next to me once during a horror film. At one scary moment, she actually shouted: "Oh, No!" Angie is in a noble tradition. The New Yorker's legendary Pauline Kael would often get carried away during thrillers, crying out, "Oh! Oh! Oh! Oh!" at increasing volume.
In press screenings, wisecracks are always acceptable. One film, I remember, was produced by a Us company with a classy, British-sounding name: Hyde Park Entertainment. When their logo flashed up – bafflingly featuring London's Tower Bridge,...

Johnny Vaughan believes that Jonathan Ross and Russell Brand being "put in a bubble" by fame and money contributed to their "cruel and unfunny" prank on Andrew Sachs.
