If Germans are notoriously stoic, then Angela Merkel is extremely German. The notoriously unflappable former German chancellor served for a nearly record sixteen years, only outlasted by Otto Von Bismarck and Helmut Kohl, her predecessor and mentor who appointed her to her first government position in 1991. Throughout her tenure, she steered Europe through the 2008 financial crisis, oversaw healthcare reform, developed renewable energy resources, opened German borders to a record number of migrants, and navigated the Covid-19 pandemic. During her time in office, she was often refereed to as the de facto head of the European Union and the most powerful woman in the world. And yet, unlike her friend Barack Obama, very little is known about her personally.
The new film “Merkel” valiantly attempts to paint a portrait of Angela Merkel, from her childhood in the former Ddr (East Germany) to the most momentous days of her political career. Though...

Malcolm McDowell is Harry Flashman in 1975's Royal Flash.
The 1975 British comedy-adventure film Royal Flash, adapted by George MacDonald Fraser from his novel (the second in the popular 12-book series, The Flashman Papers), offers a tale about that energetic cad, Harry Flashman (Malcolm McDowell, A Clockwork Orange), taking reluctant if opportunistic part in 19th-century history.
In the movie, Flashman is drawn into a plot to impersonate a prince engineered by the fearsome Otto von Bismarck (Oliver Reed, Tommy) and must utilize all his wily talents to emerge unscathed.
Directed by Richard Lester (A Hard Day’s Night, Petulia), the film also stars Alan Bates (Women in Love), Florinda Balkan, Britt Ekland, Joss Ackland (The House that Dripped Blood) and a young Bob Hoskins (Made in Dagenham) in one of his earliest film roles (albeit, a small one).

Upon completion of my first viewing of Darrell Roodt’s Winnie Mandela, I couldn’t help but struggle a little bit. Who exactly is the film for? Surely it can’t be for history buffs – the events of the famous anti-apartheid activist’s life have been heavily glorified here. It makes for a better film, yes, but is a bit bothersome when paralleled with reality. Given its origin from the biography Winnie Mandela: A Life, I imagine anybody serious about gaining an understanding of what Winnie’s actual struggles were like would simply take that work for a spin instead.
Alright, that’s fine then – nobody said films based on reality have to reflect it entirely. As a reviewer, I’m more than okay with sacrifices being made for the sake of telling a great story, or developing compelling characters. Surely the desire to craft a likable and relatable...

I have the upmost respect for any man or woman who has served for their country. As you know today is Veterans Day, and I think many of us know someone who has been at war. Here's a great documentary called The War of Wars that was created by producer Nick Reed in honor of all young men who have fought and died for us. It takes us on a journey through one of the most deadly and bloody battles in human history. This can be hard to watch, but I think it gives us more insight and understanding of the sacrifice of a soldier.
Here's a must read note from Reed:
“Anyone who has ever looked into the glazed eyes of a soldier dying on the battlefield, will think hard before starting a war”
- Otto Von Bismarck
