The desert may grow cold at night, but for two intrepid adventurers and would-be fortune seekers, the evening is flush with excitement. Earlier in the day these heroes—rugged Rick O’Connell (Brendan Fraser) and effervescent Evelyn Carnahan (Rachel Weisz)—seemed to make a breakthrough on their grave-robbing exploits after they literally broke through the ceiling of a tomb, discovering a juicy mummy along the way. A little later, they got in a shootout with desert nomads and bedouin, which nonchalantly left a body count well into the double digits. And yet, none of that really seemed to matter in the grand scheme of things, either to the characters or the audience watching them. Nay, the most thrilling thing about this portion of Stephen Sommers’ The Mummy is just how buzzed they, and by extension we, are getting from the shared company… plus the bottle of 15-year-old Scotch they just swiped off a corpse.

Patricia Velásquez long ago made peace with the fact that she and Egypt will be eternally linked. It’s an amusing quirk of fate for the Venezuelan actor since she grew up not in the sun-soaked deserts of North Africa, but rather the lush greenery of Latin America and France. She is a woman of proud Indigenous Wayuu descent and of a multicultural childhood that took her all over the world. Just never that part of it. Nonetheless, because of a movie she did a quarter-century ago—because of The Mummy—when friends, family, and even strangers think of the Land of the Pharaohs, they think of Patricia Velásquez. They think of Anck-Su-Namun.
“Can you believe I still have not been to Egypt?” Velásquez muses when we catch up with her over Zoom ahead of The Mummy’s 25th anniversary. “But somehow I seem to be connected to it a lot.

"'The Mummy' isn't really trying to scare you – it's trying to entertain you." This is what /Film's Chris Evangelista lovingly wrote of 1999's "The Mummy" in 2021. Directed by Stephen Sommers and starring Brendan Fraser as the swashbuckling Rick O'Connell, the film became a somewhat unexpected hit, so much so that it ended up being one of the highest-grossing films of 1999 overall. Critics were a bit mixed on it in its day. It was an action/adventure film, the likes of which Hollywood had released many times before. Be that as it may, a film designed purely to entertain (rather than to scare) resonated with audiences in a big way. It was pulpy lightning in a bottle.

Romancing the Mummy.
After concluding April with discussions of Ciarán Foy’s Eli (listen), a horror version of The Boy in the Plastic Bubble, and the pseudo-sequel to Videodrome in David Cronenberg’s eXistenZ (listen), we’re kicking off May with a revisit to one of our favorite years for cinema: 1999! The film we’ve selected is Stephen Sommer‘s action-adventure-horror-romantic-comedy The Mummy!
In the film, adventurer Rick O’Connell (Brendan Fraser) travels to Hamunaptra, the City of the Dead, with librarian Evelyn “Evy” Carnahan (Rachel Weisz) and her older brother Jonathan (John Hannah). While there, they accidentally awaken Imhotep (Arnold Vosloo), a cursed high priest-turned-invincible mummy, and must stop him before he sacrifices Evy in an attempt to resurrect his former lover (Patricia Velásquez).

After spending years in development hell, during which time it passed through the hands of popular genre filmmakers like George A. Romero, Mick Garris, Clive Barker, and Joe Dante, a reboot of the 1932 Universal Monsters classic The Mummy made its way out into the world in 1999 with Deep Rising writer/director Stephen Sommers at the helm. Made on a budget of $80 million, the new take on The Mummy was a box office success, earning over $416 million worldwide. Mixing horror, adventure, and comedy, it was a film that could be enjoyed by adults while also serving as gateway horror for a new generation of genre fans. Many see The Mummy (1999) as a beloved classic these days – so it makes sense that Universal has decided to give the film a theatrical re-release for its 25th anniversary. It will be back on the big screen in theatres nationwide starting April 26th, and tickets...

The Universal Monsters brand has had a rather mixed reception over the past 14 years or so. The 2010 remake of The Wolfman was a bomb, 2014’s Dracula Untold underperformed and the 2017 remake of The Mummy killed off the Dark Universe before it even began. However, the 2020 interpretation of The Invisible Man was rather well received and financially successful.
Now, as Universal attempts to reinvigorate the brand with a 2024 The Wolfman film and the Dark Universe section at Epic Universe, a beloved classic will be returning to theaters for its 25th Anniversary. The 1999 versions of The Mummy will be returning to the big screen this April in partnership with AMC.

After making his name in the wrestling industry, Dwayne Johnson finally decided to try his hand at acting and The Mummy Returns (2001) helped his dreams become a reality. Unfortunately, the role given to him was not what his fans would have imagined at all. Dwayne Johnson played the role of The Scorpion King, an unintentionally hilarious CGI demigod.
Dwayne Johnson in the prologue of The Mummy Returns
While the character was supposed to be intimidating, viewers couldn’t help but spare a laugh at the ridiculousness of it all. A giant scorpion with Dwayne Johnson’s face? There’s no way the audience was going to have nightmares about this. However, the horrible presentation of the character was not Dwayne Johnson’s fault.

Universal Studios intended to build a cinematic universe with reboots of their classic Monster properties: the Dark Universe. A series of connected creature features, starting with a new version of The Mummy (watch it Here), a big budget adventure film led by Tom Cruise. It sounds like a success story in the making, but something went wrong on the way to the screen. The Mummy was a financial failure, poorly received by critics and movie-goers alike. The Dark Universe was dead on arrival. So let’s look back at this bungled attempt at creating a cinematic universe and find out What the F*ck Happened to The Mummy.

If there's one thing I've learned from watching countless horror movies and episodes of "Scooby-Doo," it's that you don't mess with mummies. It's a superstition that's held so strong over the years that even when visiting museums, I tend to respectfully steer clear of the ancient Egypt exhibits. Myths about the latent powers of mummified royals have been around for ages, and many of them have been unfortunately influenced by stereotype-heavy depictions of Egypt and surrounding African and Middle Eastern cultures. Regardless of how much the world now knows about ancient Egyptian burial rituals, when most American moviegoers picture a mummy in their mind's eye these days, they're as likely to think about a Universal Pictures movie monster as they are the real thing.

One of the great things about the old broadcast TV model, in which seasons stretched to 20+ episodes, mere months separated one season from the next, and production schedules were thus unforgivingly demanding, was that producers always had an insatiable need for new talent. Filming 22 consecutive 42-minute episodes over the course of a few months? Your principals aren't going to be enough to cover all the ground your story will invariably traverse, and besides, they wouldn't have the time or energy even if you asked.

The early nineties were arguably the heyday of brawny action. Arnold Schwarzenegger was the world’s biggest star, thanks to Total Recall and Terminator 2. Sylvester Stallone was just a little behind him with Cliffhanger and Demolition Man, but the lower-tier action stars were starting to catch up. Steven Seagal had a string of hits and was briefly about to hit the big time with Under Siege. At the same time, the Muscles from Brussels was finding his way into bigger studio fare and teamed up with arguably the greatest action director of all time for one of his best movies – Hard Target, which is celebrating the 30th anniversary of its release.

“Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” began its domestic box office journey with $7.2 million in Thursday previews. That is almost on par with the $7.5 million earned by “Fast X” but well below “Rise of the Beasts” ($8.8 million), “John Wick: Chapter 4” ($8.9 million), “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” ($17.4 million) and “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 ($17 million). Just doing the straight Thursday-to-weekend math, Disney’s latest tentpole could land anywhere between $50 million and $65 million in its opening weekend.

Starring the illustrious Brendan Frasier and the effervescent Rachel Weisz, this film captured the hearts of moviegoers worldwide with its thrilling action, impeccable humor, and unforgettable characters.

Brendan Fraser is finally an Oscar winning actor, deservedly so for his performance in The Whale. The outpouring of love and recognition for Fraser in the last year has been heartwarming because he’s always been great, since his powerhouse debuts in 1992’s Encino Man and School Ties. His specialty, it would turn out, would be in acting opposite CGI visual effects.

From the late ‘90s to early ‘00s, Fraser appeared in several movies with co-stars who would be added in later with computers. It was already becoming a common practice after Terminator 2 and Jurassic Park, and hasn’t stopped with the Marvel movies. Nobody ever did it better than Fraser though, and these three roles are the proof.

With Brendan Fraser making an epic career comeback with The Whale, it’s no surprise that The Mummy 4 is a hot topic of discussion, but it would need a huge retcon. The first two movies, The Mummy (1999) and The Mummy Returns (2001), were smash hits that helped build Fraser’s fame after George of the Jungle. It was also a big moment for his co-stars Rachel Weisz and Arnold Vosloo. Despite the success of the first two movies, the third outing was somewhat of a flop. Director Phil Blattenberger wears his love for the genre on his sleeve, but this allows him to outrun the film’s uneven execution and loose plot
American director Phil Blattenberger gets props here for stretching his budget clingfilm-thin to mount a respectable revival of a bygone genre: the you’ve-only-gone-and-blown-the-bloody-doors-off wartime 1960/70s action-adventure. He is in Argentina to atone for failing to protect his B17 crewmates when they are downed near enemy lines. How The Canceled Second Season Of G.I. Joe: Renegades Gave The G.I. Joe Movie Its Cliffhanger Ending
"G.I. Joe" hasn't endured the way its 1980s boys' toy franchise contemporaries "Transformers" and "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" have. Whenever one "Transformers" or "Tmnt" cartoon ends, a new one pops on the air in no time at all, whereas the most recent "Joe" cartoon, "Renegades," ended in 2011.
Of these three series, "G.I. Joe" is the one most tied to its era of origin. The 1980s were a more conservative and patriotic time in the United States. As new episodes of "A Real American Hero" aired every Saturday morning, the Cold War was reaching its anti-climax. "Transformers" and "Tmnt" have both proven capable of reinventing themselves "G.I. Joe" has its eccentricities (such as the rival ninjas Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow), but it's ultimately boxed into its military theme. "G.I. Joe" is basically "Team America: World Police" minus the comedy, and that's not as fashionable anymore.

"Does your Colonel deserve to die?" Saban Films has unveiled a main trailer for Condor's Nest, an action thriller directed by Phil Blattenberger. A decade after the fall of Nazi Germany, an American aviator travels across South America in search of war criminals and encounters more than he bargained for. He's on the hunt for the sadistic Nazi Colonel who executed his bomber crew, and discovers a secret Nazi headquarters known as the Condor's Nest somewhere in South America. The film stars Jacob Keohane, Al Pagano, Corinne Britti, James Urbaniak, with Jackson Rathbone Jorge Garcia, and Bruce Davison, and Michael Ironside, and Arnold Vosloo. This doesn't look great, but it does have a fun Tarantino-esque fantasy revenge thriller vibe to it. He'll stop at nothing to take out all these Nazi bastards! Fire it up below. ›››

All it takes is a rumor and a bit of gossip to get the ball rolling on one idea or another when it comes to Hollywood, but it’s a big hope that this particular rumor won’t get anything rolling since The Mummy feels like a movie that might need a whole new outlook when it comes to impressing the audience at this time. Brendan Fraser had his turn alongside Rachel Weisz and Arnold Vosloo, and Tom Cruise had his chance as well, but it does feel like this idea could use a complete overhaul so that it might actually come

For a silly vanity project, Green Ghost And The Masters Of The Stone is a comedic fantasy that may be worth a look as family entertainment. A Texas Nissan dealer named Charlie Clark stars in and co-wrote the tale of a wannabe luchador (masked Mexican wrestler) who finds himself in the middle of a supernatural struggle among ancient powers. He’s far less prepared to become The One than Keanu was in the Matrix. His training and the big battle ensue, per the usual course of events for these things. So usual that they even play Eye of the Tiger during the former. The rights to that song may have been the most expensive part of the production.
There are a few laughs along the way, variably offering a fantasy adventure and spoofing the genre. Telling the two apart from moment to moment may be up for debate. Perhaps the...

While speaking to Sam Raimi about his gonzo new superhero movie “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” we brought about his first gonzo superhero movie, “Darkman.” And whether or not there’s a possibility for a new installment in the franchise.
“Darkman” was released in 1990, accompanied by one of the more memorable promotional campaigns of the period (“Who is Darkman?”) and starring two future dynamos: Liam Neeson and Frances McDormand. It was Raimi’s first big studio movie after the indie success of his horror classic “Evil Dead II,” and while Universal probably wanted it to be the next “Batman,” it was far zanier and more esoteric, a superhero movie by way of old Universal monster movies, neo-noirs from that period and Raimi’s love of classic radio serial “The Shadow”.

Cliches and contrivances relegate a key incident in South African history to routine Tinseltown-style fodder
Some silly cliches and tiresomely obvious liberal-balance contrivances have been pumped into this action-thriller for Netflix from South African director Mandla Dube, which is inspired by one of the most sensational events in anti-apartheid history: the Silverton siege in 1980. Three armed activists of the Anc’s uMkhonto we Sizwe (“spear of the nation”) wing – Humphrey Makhubo, Fanie Mafoko, and Wilfred Madela – occupied a bank in Silverton, Pretoria, after the chaotic abandonment of another operation to sabotage an oil plant, taking 25 people hostage and demanded the release of Nelson Mandela. Meanwhile armed officers grimly surrounded the building.
The movie version turns these three men into two men and a woman, with different fictional names: Calvin (Thabo Rametsi), Aldo (Stefan Erasmus) and Terra (Noxolo Dlamini). In accordance with time-honoured Hollywood practice, the film invents a “good” white...

"There's only one of two ways you're leaving - prison or death." Netflix has revealed the official trailer for South Africa thriller titled Silverton Siege, the latest film by cinematographer / filmmaker Mandlakayise Walter Dube. The film is based on a true story of a real life incident that sparked the global 'Free Mandela' movement. Silverton Siege is an action thriller inspired by true life events that took place in South Africa in 1980. A trio of freedom fighters end up heading into a collision course with the state after a failed sabotage mission, which turns into a bank hostage stand off. The film stars Thabo Rametsi as Calvin Khumalo, with Arnold Vosloo, Noxolo Dlamini, Stefan Erasmus, Michelle Mosalakae, Elani Dekker, Shane Wellington, and Tumisho Masha. There have been a number of strong films coming out of South Africa recently, and this looks like it digs into an important moment in the country's apartheid history.

“Silverton Siege,” an action thriller inspired by the real life incident that sparked the global Free Mandela movement, is being added to Netflix.
The film is directed by noted South African filmmaker Mandla Dube (“Kalushi: The Story of Solomon Mahlangu”) and stars Thabo Rametsi, Noxolo Dlamini and Stefan Erasmus.
Set in 1980, Rametsi, Dlamini and Erasmus portray the Silverton Siege trio – three young freedom fighters with nothing left to lose. Following a high speed car chase with the police after a thwarted sabotage mission, the trio end up seeking refuge in a South African bank in Silverton, Pretoria. Taking the bank and its customers hostage and demanding the release of Nelson Mandela in exchange for release of the prisoners, the stakes and tensions run high.
Dube said: “’Silverton Siege’ is my strongest work thus far, the hope is that filmmakers from Africa are given more opportunities at decolonizing the narrative of who we are.

Although it may be difficult to believe, this month marks 20 years since 1999's The Mummy was unleashed in theaters, and we celebrate by discussing the horror remake and its sequels on a new episode of Corpse Club!
Instilling a lifelong fear of scarab beetles in a generation of moviegoers, The Mummy (1999) celebrates its 20th anniversary on May 7th, and we commemorate the infectiously fun remake of the 1932 Universal Monster movie on this episode of Daily Dead's official podcast! Listen as Corpse Club co-hosts Tamika Jones, Derek Anderson, and Jonathan James take a deep dive into the action, adventure, and horror of 1999's The Mummy, including writer/director Stephen Sommers' Indiana Jones-esque vision for the remake, the film's effective blend of CGI and practical effects, and the movie's mix of slapstick comedy and bone-chilling (and life-sucking) horror. I thought I’d try to watch a few more new horror movies by the end of 2018 – December is usually just for Christmas movies for me – but The Harrowing sounded interesting from the few things I’ve read about it so I gave it a go.
The first thing I noticed about The Harrowing is that it looks great. I honestly don’t know its budget but I can assure you this would be what most would call a ‘low budget movie’. And it proves that low budget doesn’t mean that your film should look amateur. Here the picture is the highest of quality, the sound is perfect but also, the one thing...

When Sam Raimi directed the original Darkman back in 1990, it was an impressive feat, especially for the time: he created a big-screen superhero out of whole cloth—part comic book, part Universal monster, part Gaston Leroux, part ’80s action movie. It’s the kind of movie that should have launched a host of sequels—or, even better, a weekly series—but because of Sam Raimi’s own difficulties in making the film and because of the box office climate of the time, it didn’t happen. Not right away, at least.
Unwilling to let a potentially lucrative property disappear, Universal did put a pair of direct-to-video sequels into production in 1995. Though Raimi did not return to direct, he did remain on board as an executive producer, with directing duties on both movies turned over to Bradford May.
