Settling back into Denis Villeneuve’s exotic sci-fi world gets off to a tense start, with a sudden horns-of-Jericho blast from Hans Zimmer’s score, coupled with a stern warning onscreen: “Power over spice is power over all.” It seems a little unnecessary, since the pursuit of spice — a highly sought-after mind-bending drug — is pretty much the only constant in Frank Herbert’s novels. But it does hammer that point home, lest it get lost, since, being the second part of a trilogy, Dune: Part 2 fits the exact same interstitial slot occupied by The Two Towers in the Lord of the Rings franchise — the necessary but dramatically tantalizing middle bit that gets us to the award-sweeping climax.
Villeneuve embraces the breathing space, and everything he didn’t do in the first, he does here, leaning right into the complicated mythos of the planet Arrakis and its surrounding worlds. Two new...

Urban legends are mostly just that, the stuff of legends. They can inspire some people to do horrifying things and create urban legends of their own. Very often, these stories get the movie or show treatment whether they hue close to anything factual or not. One of the most famous examples of this urban legend which has a serial killer acting out some of the most famously told tales. Often movies that use the “inspired by” tag don’t have much to do with their source material like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre being merely inspired by Ed Gein. What happens when a legend inspires a movie and then the real story comes out years later?...

After weeks of increasingly elaborate deceptions and the kind of security operation the Stasi would be proud of, Jack Black’s Dewey Finn – the artist formerly known as Ned Schneebly (and even more formerly Schneeeebly) – has secretly used his fraudulent stint as a supply teacher to turn a gang of precocious-but-square kids into a crack team of rock ‘n’ roll delinquents. They’re discovered and Dewey goes back to being burnout loser Dewey – but the kids he’s fired up with a healthy disrespect for anyone over the age of 30 won’t let him drop out like that. They bundle him onto their bus, dash to the gig, and just about make their slot.

Jerry Moss, who co-founded A&m Records with Herb Alpert and released top-selling albums by The Carpenters, The Police, Alpert and others, has died. He was 88.
Moss’ family said he died peacefully from natural causes Tuesday night at his home in Bel Air. “Jerry was a force of nature,” his wife, Tina Moss, said. “He lived life to the fullest.”
“I never met a nicer, more honest, sensitive, smart and talented man than my partner Jerry Moss,” Alpert said in a statement.
Moss and Alpert were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006. At the 1966 Grammys, he won record of the year for co-producing “A Taste of Honey,” sharing the win with Alpert, too. Linda Lewis, the British singer who scored a string UK solo hits in the 1970s but is most widely known as one of the era’s most in-demand backup singers who recorded with Yusuf Islam/Cat Stevens, David Bowie, T. Rex and Rod Stewart, died May 3 at her home. She was 72.
Her death was announced by her sister, singer Dee Lewis Clay. A cause of death was not specified, but Clay noted that her sister died peacefully.
Born Linda Ann Fredericks in West Ham, London, Lewis experienced her first brush with show business with a non-speaking acting role in the 1961 film A Taste of Honey and, in 1964, as a screaming fan of the Beatles in A Hard Day’s Night.
Making her most notable early appearance as a singer at the first Glastonbury Festival in 1970, Lewis would go on to have a lengthy, decades-long recording and performing career, with four top-...

Jon Anderson started Yes in 1968 with bassist Chris Squire, and the prog rock band was at the center of his life for the next four decades through numerous permutations. But when illness forced him off the road after the group’s 2004 tour, Yes decided to hire a replacement vocalist and carry on without him. Anderson has been healthy and active for well over a decade, but the band — which now features Seventies guitarist Steve Howe, Drama-era keyboardist Geoff Downes, and hired guns — refuses to take him back.

Released by David Bowie’s estate in 2022, Divine Symmetry, subtitled “An Alternative Journey Through Hunky Dory,” is a 4-disc collection chronicling the year’s work leading to David Bowie’s fourth studio album. Demos, previously unreleased tracks, and live recordings capture the sound of a vision in a state of flux.
As its lead single, “Changes,” makes clear, Hunky Dory, released on Dec. 17, 1971, presented a notable metamorphosis for the artist who would go on to define transformation. This worked against Bowie as his label, RCA Records, worried he would reframe his image again, and did not promote the single. Hunky Dory didn’t chart until after the release of Bowie’s 1972 album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust.
Bowie had only landed one hit during his tenure at Mercury Records, and it would have marked him as a novelty singer. “Space Oddity” charted five days before the Apollo 11 launch in 1969. His third album,...

Five years after the release of David Bowie’s first masterpiece, Hunky Dory — which replaced the perception of Bowie as a one-hit space oddity with the idea Bowie as an ever-ch-ch-changing moon-age messiah — he offered up some characteristic mythmaking. In a 1976 Melody Maker interview, Bowie claimed Hunky Dory‘s “Song for Bob Dylan,” a piss-take extraordinaire that Bowie had shrugged off by saying it was how “some” people saw Dylan, in fact, “laid out what I wanted to do in rock.” “It was at that period that I said, ‘Ok,...

When Ezra Furman first heard Transformer, Lou Reed’s louche, bristling second album, it was as though she’d found her way out of a locked room. “Who I thought Lou Reed was [when I was] in high school became, like, ‘Oh, I’ll follow that. That’s a way to go.’” The seminal 1972 record – which celebrates its 50th anniversary today – was to become a touchstone for Furman’s own subversive work.
You can hear it in her sound. The raw crackle. The often distorted guitars. The slightly haughty vocals. Reed’s fingerprints are all over Furman’s music. And, in her own words, Transformer “had a lot to do with being publicly androgynous and queer”. Furman, who came out as a trans woman last year and is bisexual, has in the past called Reed “an ideal figure to me”. In fact, Reed’s sound and philosophy spoke to Furman so much that,...

The first thing you notice while watching Brett Morgen’s Moonage Daydream is David Bowie’s teeth. He smiles a lot. The Thin White Duke, and leader of the Spiders from Mars, is known as a serious artist. Yes, he sang “chubby little loser, national joke” to Ricky Gervais on Extras; mined Bikini Bottom humor for SpongeBob SquarePants; and was certainly happy to make lots of money dancing the blues in his red shoes, but the majority of Bowie’s works, both on screen and audio, are serious studies. Towards the end of the documentary, we hear Bowie say he always thought himself an adventurer, praying for the most exciting life one could have. Morgen shows the artist enjoyed himself immensely, possibly even more than Bowie fans.
Moonage Daydream is Morgen’s third pop-music documentary, following the Rolling Stones film Crossfire Hurricane (2012), and Montage of Heck, his 2015 dive into the...

Cleopatra Entertainment has announced that they will be giving Frost, a “chilly thriller” directed Brandon Slagle (Attack of the Unknown), a Digital and Blu-ray release on October 11th – and to help start building the hype, we’re proud to share the Exclusive first look at the film’s trailer! You can check it out in the embed above.
Scripted by Robert Thompson from a story by James Cullen Bressack, Frost centers on
a young woman and her father who have to fight for survival after being stranded on a remote mountainside during a storm.
The synopsis doesn’t mention (but you can see in the trailer) that the situation is made even scarier and more desperate by the fact that the young woman in the story also happens to be pregnant. The film stars Vernon Wells – who counts The Road Warrior and Commando among his 240+ screen acting credits – and Devanny Pinn,...

Ok, so the actor Anthony Perkins is best known for his legendary role as Norman Bates in Hitchcock’s Psycho and its sequels… but that part is not the sum total of this superb actor’s career. That’s not to say he didn’t trade on his status as cinema’s seminal psycho, and starred in plenty of chiller thrillers, instantly lending them Batesian cachet… for example Edge of Sanity, a delirious conflation of Robert Louis Stephenson’s classic horror novella Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde and Jack the Ripper’s real-life reign of terror over Victorian London, where Perkins plays the unhinged lead role with aplomb. To celebrate the release of Edge of Sanity on Blu-ray from Arrow Video, here’s a round-up of some of Perkins’ finest non-Bates roles…

Animals Asia has unveiled the location of its new sanctuary in Bach Ma, Vietnam, bringing them a step closer to ending the cruel, outdated and illegal practice of bear bile farming in the country.
The practice has been pushing Asiatic black bears (aka moon bears), and Malayan sun bears towards extinction in the country. To celebrate this milestone, a host of global superstars joined the organisation’s founder and CEO Jill Robinson MBE to unveil the location of their new sanctuary.

The Sex Pistols were a mythical band. Steve Jones couldn’t play guitar. Johnny Rotten couldn’t sing. Sid Vicious couldn’t always stand upright, much less keep his spiky hair on end. Malcom McLaren couldn’t manage. With Glen Matlock and Paul Cook rounding out the band, the personnel are just the stencils for McLaren’s silk screen. Danny Boyle’s Pistol, coming to FX on Hulu, perpetuates the mythology. This is probably part of the reason John Lydon didn’t sign off on the project. He likes to keep his public image limited. It also might be a little melodramatic for the former Sex Pistols frontman. That works for TV more than it does for punks.
Based on Jones’ memoir Lonely Boy: Tales from a Sex Pistol, the six-episode miniseries tells the story of the forgotten generation of London’s punk culture through the eyes of their most fabricated spokespeople: The Sex Pistols,...

Vangelis, the electronic-music pioneer who won an Oscar for “Chariots of Fire” and composed such other landmark film scores as “Blade Runner,” died Tuesday, the Athens News Agency reported. He was 79.
The self-taught musician enjoyed a long career in European pop music before the magical colors and textures of his 1970s solo albums brought him to the attention of film and TV producers. The use of a track from his 1975 album “Heaven and Hell” as the theme for Carl Sagan’s PBS series “Cosmos” brought his name and music into prominence in America.
But it was his music for the 1981 film “Chariots of Fire” that brought him worldwide fame. Producer David Puttnam made the unorthodox choice for his period sports drama after hearing Vangelis’s music for the French nature documentary “Opera Sauvage” and the studio album “China.”

William Shatner has tackled everything from prog rock to country to Christmas music during his long career as a recording artist, and on his upcoming LP he’s broadening out yet again into the blues.
Titled simply The Blues, the album (due October 2nd) features guest spots from Brad Paisley (“Sweet Home Chicago”), Jeff “Skunk” Baxter (“Smokestack Lightnin'”), Steve Cropper (“Route 66”) and Pat Travers (“I Put a Spell on You”). Ricky Gervais, pop star Mýa, actors Dame Judi Dench, Olivia Newton-John and Tzi Ma, and renowned conservationist Dame Jane Goodall have come together to record an impassioned video calling for a reset of humanity’s relationship with nature in the wake of the Covid-19 crisis and its zoonotic origins. However it’s two baby bears who have stolen the spotlight.
In mid-July, as the celebrities recorded their video messages, Animals Asia rescued two three-month-old moon bear cubs that had been illegally trapped and put on sale on the black market, and are now taking care of them at the Ngo’s sanctuary in Tam Dao, Vietnam.

“If this crisis has taught us anything, it’s the power of leaving nature alone – and that The Only Cure is Kindness”, said British comedian Ricky Gervais.

Yes fans have spent the past 15 years hoping that the surviving members of the group will put aside their differences for a reunion tour, but guitarist Steve Howe tells Rolling Stone that that is a very unlikely proposition.
“I don’t think [the fans] should stay up late nights worrying about that,” he says. “There’s just too much space out there between people. To be in a band together or even to do another tour like Union is completely unthinkable.”

Yes guitarist Steve Howe has teamed up with the band’s current frontman, vocalist Jon Davison, for Love Is, his first solo album since 2011. It will arrive in stores on July 31st.
“I called the album Love Is because it hints at the central idea that love is important but also love of the universe and the ecology of the world is very important,” Howe said in a statement. “Alexander Humboldt went around the world and recognized we are destroying the planet, but that was 200 years ago! We are still destroying the planet and,...

In an alternate universe where the coronavirus hasn’t shut down the entire concert industry, progressive-rock fans from around the globe are heading down to Florida to set sail on the Cruise to the Edge next week. The lineup this year included Yes, Marillion, Steve Hackett, and other giants of the prog-rock universe.
Yes backed out of the cruise last week and there was a brief moment when the cruise planned on carrying on without them, even though the thing is named after one of their most famous records, Close to the Edge.

An incredible lineup of musicians — including Eric Clapton, Van Morrison, Yusuf/Cat Stevens, Rick Wakeman, Tom Jones, Bonnie Tyler and Nick Mason — came together at London’s 02 Arena on Tuesday night for the Music for the Marsden charity show, which raised money to fight cancer.
Procol Harum’s Gary Brooker was the musical director of the show and he worked alongside keyboardist Paul “Wix” Wickens, guitarists Andy Fairweather Low and Robbie McIntosh, bassist Dave Bronze and drummers Graham Broad and Ian Paice.

From Rick Wakeman to Chromeo, keyboards and keyboardists have always found a place in popular music, as the heartbeat behind a good song, whether it be prog rock or dance. Known for their elaborate riffs and theatrical playing styles, Wakeman and P-Thugg (along with countless other keyboardists) own a lot of their performance ability to a good portable keyboard and a solid keyboard stand.
Traditional piano players are often seated behind the keys, owing to the piano’s large size and low profile. But with a portable keyboard and an accompanying stand,...

When Yes were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2017, the surviving members of the band lined up behind a podium at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn and delivered the sorts of speeches you’d expect from veteran musicians who had waited decades for this moment of validation. Frontman Jon Anderson thanked departed Yes members Chris Squire and Peter Banks, 1980s-era guitarist Trevor Rabin thanked his wife and son, drummer Alan White paid tribute to the fans, and guitarist Steve Howe read prepared remarks about how the...

Set in an unearthly department store, Peter Strickland’s bizarre ghost story is utterly unlike anything else around
Here is a comedy that doesn’t know it’s a comedy, a scary movie that doesn’t know it’s a scary movie, a pastiche that isn’t aware of any film other than itself. It is a deadpan-bizarre spectacle with stabs of electronic music on the soundtrack and could have been shot decades ago, forgotten, and then revived on the Talking Pictures TV channel.
Like director Peter Strickland’s previous movie The Duke of Burgundy (2014), it features thoroughly odd fetishistic fabrications, brand names and artefacts from an alternative commercial universe. I can imagine Rick Wakeman turning this film into a triple concept album or a character in a Jonathan Coe novel becoming obsessed with it.

“My favorite keyboard of all time will always be the Minimoog,” Rick Wakeman says in an extended version of a scene that will appear in Electronic Voyager, an upcoming doc on the life of legendary synth inventor Robert Moog. “I couldn’t live without one.”
In the film, Moog’s daughter, Michelle Moog-Koussa, retraces the footstep of her father from his birthplace in Queens, New York, to his eventual home of Asheville, North Carolina. Along the way, she meets with various prominent musicians who have used Moog synths in their work,...

The Joy Division story has been told many times, yet it never stops seeming too bizarre to be true. Jon Savage, best known for his classic punk history, England’s Dreaming, was one of the band’s first chroniclers in the 1970s, but he tells the tale in a new way in his excellent new book This Searing Light, The Sun and Everything Else. It’s the ultimate oral history of one of rock’s most haunting legends, in the words of the band, their friends, enemies and witnesses. Savage...

Twenty-nine years ago, Yes lead singer Jon Anderson abandoned a half-finished solo album called Uzlot that he’d been been recording in Big Bear, California, with his bandmates Chris Squire and Alan White. Yes were gearing up for a massive reunion tour and he simply put the master tapes in his garage and gave them very little thought as the years started racing by. But just a couple of years ago, producer Michael Franklin reached out to Anderson to see if he’d let him take the tapes and finish the album.

Nearly 30 years ago, Yes frontman Jon Anderson began work on a solo album with help from his bandmates Alan White and Chris Squire. He never got around to finishing it and eventually got sidetracked by Yes work, but recently went back into the studio to complete the album with help from producer Michael T. Franklin. Anderson originally called the project Uzlot, but now that it’s finally done, he’s calling it 1,000 Hands. It comes out March 31st.

The only thing surprising about William Shatner’s new Christmas album Shatner Claus is that it took him so long to create it. After all, he’s attempted everything from prog rock to science fiction songs to the wondrous insanity that is 1968’s The Transformed Man on his previous releases, but this is his first time tackling Christmas music. As usual, it’s a spoken-word effort where he’s paired with stars like Rick Wakeman, Henry Rollins, Brad Paisley, Judy Collins and Todd Rundgren.

Before William Shatner releases his seasonal LP Shatner Claus: The Christmas Album on Friday, the Star Trek actor has unwrapped his version of “Silent Night” featuring Iggy Pop.
Keeping with the spoken word motif of his infamous musical work, Shatner provides the bookending narration for the Christmas classic, while Pop swoops in with his trademark baritone to deliver a sentimental, traditional of “Silent Night.”
Pop isn’t the only rocker to get his carol on on Shatner Claus: The actor has recruited an all-star cast including Henry Rollins (“Jingle Bells...

It's a Black Flag Christmas as Captain Kirk trades in his starship for a sleigh.
Christmas is coming and, like the Grinch in the Dr. Seuss Classic, William Shatner is a transformed man. The former Denny Crain is putting out his first-ever Christmas album, called Shatner Claus - The Christmas Album on Oct. 26. And he's assembled enough of a varied lineup of guests they could star in the "Journey to Babel" episode of the original Star Trek. Jethro Tull flautist and singer Ian Anderson, protopunk Iggy Pop, folk songstress Judy Collins, prog pianist Rick Wakeman, utopian pop master Todd Rundgren, country star Brad Paisley mix up the styles for the actor who once sold Priceline.
The man who shouted "Mr. Tambourine Man" with the same gusto he screamed "Khan," put out the track list of the album on Thursday, and followed it up with a chestnut he...

The Buggles could have gone in a lot of different directions once their debut single “Video Killed the Radio Star” became a huge hit all over the world in late 1979. The synth duo (featuring Trevor Horn on lead vocals and Geoff Downes on keyboards) could have spent the next couple of years touring the world to to capitalize on their new fame. They could have headed right back into the studio and tried to craft an even poppier song. They could have even gone their separate ways under the assumption...

Derek Smalls wouldn’t want you to think that his well of creativity is tapped out, just because Nigel Tufnel and David St. Hubbins are no longer in the picture. And the former Spinal Tap bassist has found plenty of guests willing to take up the slack on his first solo album, “Smalls Change.” The big lineup of cameos includes Steely Dan’s Donald Fagen, Joe Satriani, Rick Wakeman, Steve Vai, Foo Fighter Taylor Hawkins, Richard Thompson and Jane Lynch, with the “Glee” actress playing the titular role in one of the record’s more tellingly titled tunes, “She Puts the Bitch in Obituary.”
Spinal Tap, which last reunited for an album and tour in 2009, is apparently not due for another comeback — although we can only guess at that from the fictionalized answers given by Smalls, who does not break character to reveal the man behind the curtain, Harry Shearer.
