The Oscar-frontrunner “Dune” (Warner Bros.), “Nightmare Alley” (Searchlight Pictures), and “West Side Story” (20th Century Studios) each won sound editing feature awards Sunday night at the 69th annual Mpse Golden Reel Awards (held virtually). “Dune” took feature effects/foley, “Nightmare Alley,” a non-Oscar nominee and surprise winner over “Dune” and “No Time to Die,” snagged feature dialogue/Adr, and Oscar nominee “West Side Story” collected feature music. The other Oscar sound nominees are “Belfast” (Focus Features), “No Time to Die” (MGM/UA), and “The Power of the Dog” (Netflix).
There were other surprises: Disney’s “Raya and the Last Dragon” triumphed in animation over the studio’s Oscar-frontrunner, “Encanto,” which has won a slew of guild awards, and “The Rescue” (Disney+) took feature documentary over Oscar-frontrunner “Summer of Soul” (Searchlight Pictures). Additionally, “Cliff Walkers” (Viki) earned foreign language honors, and “Infinite” (Paramount +) grabbed non-theatrical feature.

Free Solo’s path to likely Emmy nominations has been paved with gold—the Oscar kind.
The film about mountain climber Alex Honnold’s breathtaking ascent of Yosemite’s El Capitan—without ropes—won the Academy Award in February for Best Documentary Feature. It’s now on Emmy nomination ballots in multiple nonfiction categories, including cinematography, picture editing, and directing.
Filmmakers Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin have spent part of the last few months simply adjusting to their Oscar win.
“It’s just a little surreal,” Chin admits, reflecting on that moment in the Oscar spotlight. “You understand how special it is, from coming up with the right idea to the production networks and a film that works that people embrace, your peers embrace.”
Free Solo has not only claimed awards but extraordinary box office returns—a theatrical run lasting months brought in more than $17.5 million in North America alone.

Last night in Los Angeles, two thousand National Geographic fans descended upon The Greek Theatre for the network’s Emmy Contenders Showcase, a one-of-a-kind outdoor experience and concert event.
Upon entry, guests were treated to activations inspired by five Emmy-contending series and one stunning documentary, which just a few months ago picked up an Oscar, and is on the awards path once more.
First, there was a cryo spa, inspired by Life Below Zero. Attendees could step into the shoes of the series’ extreme crew and documentary subjects and get a taste of the subzero temperatures they endure on a daily basis in remote parts of Alaska, while living off the grid.
Following a cryotherapy facial, guests could engage with the producers of The Story of God with Morgan Freeman, getting henna tattoos, and tapping into 5,000 years of cultural tradition.

This sets up a competitive Oscar race down to the wire next Sunday between the two frontrunners. But there’s also a good chance that the popular Freddie Mercury biopic will sweep both categories as a result of its Cas sound mixing victory on Saturday.

Yesterday came the yearly announcement from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences as it extended 134 invitations to several artists and executives "who have distinguished themselves by their contributions to theatrical motion pictures" read the press release. Of course all of them can decline, but I wouldn't necessarily expect that to happen as all who accept the invitation will be the only additions in 2009 to the Academy's roster of voting members. "These filmmakers have, over the course of their careers, captured the imagination of audiences around the world," said Academy President Sid Ganis. "It's this kind of talent and creativity that make up the Academy, and I welcome each of them to our ranks." The list follows below and reading around the best analysis I saw of it came from Nathaniel Rogers at The Film Experience who, among other things, pointed out the addition of longtime Darren Aronofsky's...

On Tuesday, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences issued invitations to 134 members of the film community to join the group. There were a maximum of 166 open slots to fill this year, but the various branch committees endorsed fewer candidates than were proposed to them.
Hugh Jackman, who hosted the most recent Oscar show, has been invited to join. So have Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, James Franco and Michelle Williams. The list even includes a number of comic performers like Michael Cera, Seth Rogan and Paul Rudd.
Voting membership in the organization has held steady at just under 6,000 members since 2003.
New members will be welcomed into the Academy at an invitation-only reception at the Academy's Fairbanks Center for Motion Picture Study in Beverly Hills in September.
