Sydney-based Odin’s Eye Animation has secured sales of kids’ TV series “The Beachbuds” to Disney Japan and ABC Australia. Other territories are under negotiation at the MipTV market in Cannes.
“The Beachbuds” is a 52-episode x 11’ animated series set in Zoobak Resort, a fictional tropical island paradise with the funniest feathered friends. With a target demographic of 6 to 11-year-olds “The Beachbuds” teaches kids about harmony, hospitality and humor, so no matter what happens everyone can have their best day ever.
The series is produced by J-Toon Productions, a U.S. and Indonesian firm, established in 2013 by industrialist and minerals magnate Jimmy Budiarto, and Montreal-based producer-distributor Syon Media. The producers previously negotiated a license deal for Southeast Asia, where the series is now available on Disney Plus Hotstar.
The series is directed by George Samilski with writers including Primetime Emmy-winner Steven Banks, Ken Goin and John R. Morey (“Family Guy”).

When visual development artist Chris Appelhans (“Coraline”) realized that “Aladdin” was originally a Chinese folk tale while visiting Shanghai 20 years ago, he had an aha moment about writing and directing an animated genie-in-a-bottle retelling set in modern Shanghai. The result is “Wish Dragon” (streaming Friday on Netflix), an American-Chinese co-production with Sony Pictures Animation, in which working-class college student, Din (Jimmy Wong), teams up with pink, fluffy, snarky genie, Long (John Cho), to reunite with his long-lost childhood friend, Lina (Natasha Liu Bordizzo), now a famous model.
As Appelhans watched a friend in Shanghai “struggling with family and class and concepts of success, it seemed like that timeless [‘Aladdin’] story… about a peasant boy who lives with his mother, meets a wish-granting genie, falls in love with a princess, loses himself, and finds himself again, could have newfound relevance today,” he said. “It made me think a lot about the world.

The Chris Appelhans-directed film follows a similar arc to Aladdin, where a mythical figure grants three wishes to the person who has unleashed it from its confines.

The best thing about Shrek when it debuted 20 (yikes!) years ago was that it brought a fresh take on traditional fairy tales and got a generation of children to understand that there were more ways to tell these classic stories than the Disney way. The humor here was contemporary and original while still respecting the lessons these were designed to convey.
Now, celebrating the 20th anniversary of its release, Universal Home Entertainment has spruced up the original film for its 4k Ultra HD debut. It comes in a combo pack with the Blu-ray disc and Digital HD code.
It’s still funny, with Mike Meyers affecting a fine Scottish accent for the title character, paired with Eddie Murphy’s memorable Donkey along with Cameron Diaz (Princess Fiona), John Lithgow (Lord Farquaad), and Vincent Cassel as Monsieur Hood. To protect the swamp home of the ogre and its other denizens, Shrek takes on the evil Lord,...

Sony Pictures Animation is developing a new movie about a pack of female K-Pop stars who slay evil spirits in between gigs.
“K-Pop: Demon Hunters” is underway at the Oscar-winning studio behind “Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse,” from directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans.
Kang, whose credits include “The Lego Ninjago Movie,” is mounting the project as an homage to her Korean pride and the wildly popular K-Pop music she grew up with. The movie is described as an action adventure that follows a world-renowned girl group, as they balance their lives in the spotlight with their secret identities as demon hunters. It will be set against a colorful backdrop of fashion, food, style and music.
Joining Kang and Appelhans (“Wish Dragon”) is Oscar-winning producer Aron Warner, of “Shrek.” Hannah McMechan and Danya Jimenez, who write as a team under the moniker Hanya, are writing the script. Their recent screenplay “Luna...

The 74th Academy Awards, which honored films from 2001, was historic in many ways. Whoopi Goldberg would host the ceremony on March 24, 2002, for her fourth time. Denzel Washington became just the second black actor to win a lead trophy. It was for his villainous cop in “Training Day” — 8 years after Sidney Poitier became the first for his handyman in 1963’s “Lilies of the Field.” Halle Berry also broke down a barrier by becoming the first-ever black actress to win an Oscar as a lead, portraying a single mother in “Monster’s Ball.”
It was also the debut of the Best Animated Feature category. As Goldberg explained on air, “In recognition to their steadily growing importance to the motion picture arts, the academy has added a category honoring animated feature films. Bambi, who is now in an assisted living facility in Palm Springs, has been lobbying for this for years. I proudly...

Hard to believe it was just fifteen years ago that DreamWorks introduced us to Shrek. In an attempt to further distance itself from Disney’s fairy tale-driven output, they came up with a contemporary satire that used the very same fairy tales and nursery rhymes but turned them all on their heads with equal doses of charm and cheek.

It’s been four years since we first heard that Michael Bay and Platinum Dunes were adapting the comic book “Zombies vs. Robots.” It seemed like a perfect combination for a studio that’s given us mostly horror remakes and the director of the Transformers movies. Finally, it’s now moving forward with an Oscar-nominated director: Andrew Adamson. His prestige comes in the form of the Academy’s recognition of Shrek 2, which he helmed with Kelly Asbury and Conrad Vernon (though Adamson was the only one credited for the honor), as one of the best animated features of 2004. He also co-directed the first Shrek, with Vicky Jenson, which won the first Oscar for Best Animated Feature, but that honor and statuette went only to producer Aron Warner. Free Birds came out in a bang, but it didn’t really get a lot of attention beyond the holiday push, and I wonder if that isn’t because it was simply dismissed as being too holiday-gimmicky for a holiday that doesn’t have an established history with films. With Owen Wilson, Woody Harrelson, and Amy Poehler, and a curiously fun story, you’d think this one would have made more of a mark on the year. Despite the animation-heavy year, this one deserves to have more people talking about, and the release is one that is definitely worth picking up.

Another young adult book-to-film adaptation is on its way, this time for the post-apocalyptic thriller Monument 14, which is the first installment in a trilogy to be completed by Emmy Laybourne. Brad Peyton will direct for Reel FX and Andrew Adamson’s Strange Weather.
Monument 14 was published this past June, and its follow-up, Monument 14: Sky on Fire, will be published next June by the Macmillan Children’s Publishing Group imprint Feiwell & Friends.
Here's the book's synopsis:
Fourteen kids. One superstore. A million things that go wrong.
In Emmy Laybourne’s action-packed debut novel, six high school kids (some popular, some not), two eighth graders (one a tech genius), and six little kids trapped together in a chain superstore build a refuge for themselves inside. While outside, a series of escalating disasters, beginning with a monster hailstorm and ending with a chemical weapons spill, seems to be tearing the world—as they know it—apart.

A group of teens are trapped together in a chain superstore and face the prospect of life, death and love and hate while the world as they know it ends right outside. That book was published in June, and the followup, Monument 14: Sky On Fire, will be published next June by the Macmillan Children’s Publishing Group imprint Feiwell & Friends. “As soon as I read the first chapter,...
