Friday Night Dinner knows the truth about families. Not that they bicker, mock and childishly compete – sitcom’s known about that since Steptoe & Son. No, Friday Night Dinner knows that families aren’t made up of people; they’re made up of odd habits.
Did you ever invite a friend home from school and pray that none of your family’s Weird Stuff would leak out into the playground the next day? That your mum’s special word for a fart wouldn’t follow you down the corridor into Maths, and the dinner hall wouldn’t echo with the high-pitched voice in which you all talk to the dog? Perhaps you hoped against hope that your brother wouldn’t be wearing his comedy Viz Buster Gonad t-shirt, that no-one would see the wooden clothes peg holding open the choke on your dad’s car, and that nobody would call...

“The One Note Man” director George Siougas has crafted perhaps the most visually impressive live-action short of this year. The silent, musical masterpiece depicts “The Crown” actor Jason Watkins as a bassoonist who lives a routine, monotonous existence. each day passes in the exact same as his life passes him by before said routine is broken by a fellow musician in the orchestra he plays in and his world is changed forever.
Speaking to Siougas, who has directed plenty of episodes of British soaps “Hollyoaks” and “Casualty,” gives you the immediate impression that this is a filmmaker who loves cinema. And he truly, truly is. He was inspired to make “The One Note Man” after re-watching Alfred Hitchcock films, with the opening of “The Man Who Knew Too Much” a particular inspiration.
In the writing process, he soon found that dialogue wasn’t necessary to tell this story and the decision was a smart one.

“The Hunger Games” star Sam Claflin has boarded George C. Siougas’ short film “The One Note Man” as an executive producer.
Narrated by Ian McKellen (“Lord of the Rings”), the Christmas-set story focuses on a bassoonist wedded to his routine, which involves playing a single note each day in the orchestra he is part of before returning home. One day, after accidentally overhearing a mind-blowing violin solo the musician finds himself caught between “staying in his comfort zone or stepping out and changing his life forever.”
The film, which has qualified for Oscar submission after winning the grand prize for best live action short at the Rhode Island International Film Festival, stars Jason Watkins (“The Crown”), Louisa Clein (“Emmerdale”), Crystal Yu (“Doctor Who”), Paul Barber (“The Full Monty”).
It does not feature any dialogue, instead giving audiences an opportunity to enjoy an original score by “Shakespeare in Love” composer Stephen Warbeck.

No Spaced. No The League of Gentlemen. No Smack the Pony or Goodness Gracious Me or The Royle Family or Brass Eye, or Red Dwarf or Father Ted or anything that belongs to the last century (side note: the late 90s were an incredible time for UK comedy). These are the 40 finest British comedy TV shows that have arrived since the year 2000, as nominated by our writers. Add in your favourites below, and it’s a party.
What’s cheering about this lot, apart from the fact that as comedies, they should all technically cheer us up, is how different they are. There’s the surreal chaos of Year of the Rabbit, and the sweet warmth of Lovesick, the Pythonesque bonkersness of Yonderland, the satirical might of The Thick of It and much more. Something for everyone, you might say.

Fly on the wall? Pah! The wall is all the way over there! These days, viewers want to be flies buzzing right around the noses of the people making the headlines, close enough to tell what they had for breakfast. And thanks to true story TV dramas, they can.
It’s been a long time since ropey Lifetime Movies were as good as it got for true story TV. In recent years, British production companies have stepped up in a big way to serve a growing appetite for fact-based drama, but all too often the real-life TV dramas of today focus on haunting tales of history’s most gruesome murders. If you’re sick of serial killers, there are plenty of non-murder true stories to enjoy in drama form, from very public scandals to ordinary people doing extraordinary things, to the kinds of tragedies it’s important that we never forget.

Fans have been waiting for the TV adaptation of Anansi Boys – Neil Gaiman’s 2005 fantasy novel about the two sons of the spider-god Anansi – for a long, long time.
Anticipation for Anansi Boys predates The Sandman, Good Omens and even American Gods when it comes to Neil Gaiman TV series. It was first reported that an adaptation was in the works back in 2014, but this project never came to be (parts were eventually incorporated into American Gods), so fans were excited to discover an Amazon Prime Video miniseries was in production back in 2020.
Three years later, we can almost taste it, so in anticipation here’s everything you need to know about the upcoming Anansi Boys:
It’s a Standalone Story… Developed From a Conversation with Sir Lenny Henry

Exclusive: Disney+ is ready to give the greenlight to an adaptation of Cj Sansom’s bestselling Shardlake novels, depicting an unlikely detective working under Henry VIII’s reign.
The streaming service will bolster its UK originals slate with the series, which will be made by The Forge, the All3Media-backed production company behind Starz’s Becoming Elizabeth.
Disney and The Forge have lined up Justin Chadwick to direct the Shardlake series. Chadwick was the lead director on Becoming Elizabeth and has form when it comes to Tudor storytelling, having directed The Other Boleyn Girl, starring Eric Bana, Natalie Portman and Scarlett Johansson.
Working titled Shardlake, the series will shoot in the UK this year and sources said it could comprise four episodes. Should it be successful, there is plenty of material for The Forge to mine, with Sansom having written seven novels in the Shardlake series.

Count Magnus, this year’s BBC Christmas ghost story special, blends the holiday spirit of reconnecting with family origins with the terror of reawakening a supernatural being that should have been left alone. Although many may associate the concept with the ghosts that haunt Scrooge in A Christmas Carol, UK TV viewers traditionally welcome the holiday season with filmed adaptations of M.R. James’ early 20th-century ghost stories, a BBC tradition revived by Mark Gatiss since 2013.
In this year’s M.R. James adaptation, Jason Watkins plays Wraxhall, a man digging into his distant ancestors from Sweden. His curiosity leads him to the final resting place of Count Magnus, a 16th-century noble who died mysteriously after a trip abroad. He receives multiple warnings that the crypt is haunted but he insists on opening up the tomb.

When it comes to the tradition of telling ghosts stories during Christmas, Charles Dickens still reigns supreme, with medieval scholar M.R. James in a very close second place. But in recent years, actor, writer, and director Mark Gatiss has quickly earned mention alongside those two by reinvigorating the United Kingdom’s heritage of holiday horror.
Best known for his work on Doctor Who, Sherlock, Dracula, and the comedy troupe League of Gentlemen, Gatiss has become the force behind the BBC’s revival of A Ghost Story for Christmas series of television films. The original run of annuals was largely helmed by Lawrence Gordon Clark, and aired from 1971 until ’78, before returning sporadically in 2005. Gatiss made his directorial debut in 2013 with The Tractate Middoth, the Ghost Story adaptation of James’ work. He has since written and directed three more for the series — James adaptations Martin’s Close and The Mezzotint, and the...

Warning: contains spoilers for Inside No. 9 episode ‘Kid/Nap’
The internet can’t decide if it was Pablo Picasso or the Dalai Lama who said “learn the rules like a pro so you can break them as an artist”, so let’s split the difference and say it was Peter Andre. What Andre’s getting at is that rules will only take an artist so far (to ‘Mysterious Girl’) but transgression of said rules is necessary for an act of true creation (‘Insania’).
In ‘Kid/Nap’, Inside No. 9 transgresses its own golden rule. Not the one about never hiring actors Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith have worked with before – that went out with Jason Watkins in series three’s ‘The Bill’ and has been snubbed several times since. Lara in this episode being played by Daisy Haggard, aka Psychoville’s Debbie, is no foul.
Instead, it’s the rule about every Inside No.

Whoopi Goldberg is set to play Bird Woman in the upcoming Amazon series adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s “Anansi Boys.”
The series follows Charlie Nancy (Malachi Kirby)—sometimes known as Fat Charlie (it was his father’s nickname for him; he’s not fat)—a young man who is used to being embarrassed by his estranged father (Delroy Lindo). But when his father dies, Charlie discovers that he was Anansi: Trickster God of stories. And he learns that he has a brother. Now that brother, Spider (also played by Kirby), is entering Charlie’s life, determined to make it more interesting—but making it a lot more dangerous instead.

If any new trends catch on in 2022, one should insist on every film or television series justifying its existence beyond its potential to make a profit — especially when it comes to adaptations of IP previously adapted in multitudes. Under those terms, given the eight-episode end product that premieres tonight on PBS, there’s little explanation for this new adaptation of “Around the World in 80 Days,” Jules Vernes’ most adapted work. Any new take on Vernes’ classic, even after taking into account that 2022 marks the 150th anniversary of its original publishing, ought to be as adventurous and inventive as the story that inspired it. This one most certainly is not.

“The Last Duel” star Jodie Comer is set to receive the Variety Outstanding Achievement Award, distributed in association with the Edinburgh TV Festival as part of the organization’s annual TV Awards.
The honor celebrates Comer’s extensive body of work, which ranges from BBC America’s “Killing Eve” to international blockbusters such as “Free Guy” and more recently, Ridley Scott’s “The Last Duel.” The actor’s award will be paired with a wide-ranging conversation with Variety.
“Jodie Comer has never ceased to surprise with her extraordinary versatility and knack for selecting roles that really get under the skin,” said Variety international editor Manori Ravindran. “From her performances in the BBC’s ‘Thirteen’ and Channel 4’s ‘Help’ to playing one of television’s most entertaining villains in ‘Killing Eve’ and making her major film debut in ‘Free Guy,’ Jodie is wonderfully unpredictable and always electric on screen. Exclusive: Forced to halt production after just three weeks of shooting in South Africa when the Covid pandemic struck back in March 2020, and picking up again in Romania seven months later, Around The World In 80 Days is due to have its world premiere at Canneseries on October 10.
Star David Tennant, who plays English gentleman-turned-adventurer Phileas Fogg, is expected on the Riviera to unveil the first two episodes of this mega-adaptation of the Jules Verne classic. An airdate has yet to be set, but is likely around the holidays via such outlets as France Télévisions, PBS/Masterpiece, the BBC, Rai and Zdf. Check out the first-look teaser above.
Joining Tennant in the eight-part adventure are French actor Ibrahim Koma (Oss 177) as Fogg’s irrepressible valet, Passepartout, and Leonie Benesch (The Crown) as determined journalist, Abigail ‘Fix’ Fortescue.
A Slim Film + Television and Federation co-production for the European Alliance, the series boasts a new spin on Fogg.
Life On Mars creator and 80 Days head writer, Ashley Pharoah says, “We wanted Fogg yes to be a preposterously upper middle class over-educated Englishman, but I wanted to give him a sort of childlike sense of wonder because he’s never traveled, he’s never left London or his club. As soon as I hit on that, I thought it’s a love letter to the world, if that isn’t a bit pretentious. He goes to Paris and India and Hong Kong and Yemen and he’s so excited to see a camel, the different colors and cultures. It felt like resetting our relationship with traveling and seeing the world like that.”
In terms of scoring Tennant for the lead, former Kudos boss Simon Crawford Collins, who runs Slim Film + Television, says, “We wanted somebody who could believably do the action adventure, could play the stiff-upper-lip Englishman, but at the same time you never fall out of love with him and you really want to get under the veneer of that and go, ‘Wow, this is actually a complex man.’ David manages that so brilliantly.”
Pharoah, who is also an executive producer, hints at more Fogg adventures to come. “We are in the early stages of wondering — if this goes well — if we could do it again. Taking those three characters and doing a different adventure with them.” Hopefully not under the same conditions, however, which Pharoah recalls as “a really hard shoot.”
It was also expensive, as pandemic-related issues added about £4M in costs, Crawford Collins tells Deadline. “The first lockdown was a killer, but once we got going again we felt very blessed.” Production in South Africa was originally stopped in March 2020 and picked up again in November in Romania. “In an ideal world we would have carried on filming in South Africa where our sets were, but South Africa was coming out slowly so we did the big shift to Romania,” adds the executive producer. This year, production was able to move back to South Africa and the result is “very vibrant and cinematic.”
Around The World In 80 Days counts co-production partners Masterpiece in the U.S., Peu Communications in South Africa, and Belgium’s Be-films and Rtbf. Daro Film associate produces. Seven West Media has also backed the production and will broadcast in Australia. The series has further been acquired by the BBC in the UK and Rts in Switzerland.
While there are myriad partners on the series, Crawford Collins says development and production were “very straightforward.” France Télévisions “came back saying, ‘We love this and really want to make it and we don’t want to be the secondary broadcaster.’ They wanted to be lead, so immediately put in a sizable amount of money. It was a wonderful building block and they then brought the Alliance partners on board.”
The entire process (apart from the shutdown), “was incredibly stress free… We never had any big disagreements… The specter of Europudding still sort of lives heavily in our minds and we all know those days. But I think the trouble with that is when you have a project originated just to secure financing then it really shows through. The difference is that we had a clear vision of what we wanted to say, but just knew we needed a lot of people to help fund it.”
Also starring as series regulars in 80 Days are Jason Watkins (Des) and Peter Sullivan (Poldark). Guest actors include Lindsay Duncan (A Discovery Of Witches), Dolly Wells (Dracula), Richard Wilson (Merlin), Faical Elkihel (The Spy), Anthony Flanagan (The Terror), Gary Beadle (Patrick Melrose) and Giovanni Scifoni (Doc – Nelle Tue Mani).
Around The World In 80 Days is adapted by a team of writers led by Pharoah and Caleb Ranson (Child Of Mine). Steve Barron (The Durrells) directs with Brian Kelly (Downton Abbey) and the late Charles Beeson (The Mentalist).
Federation Entertainment handles distribution rights. Exec producers are Crawford Collins for Slim, Lionel Uzan and Pascal Breton for Federation, Winnie Serite for Peu and Susanne Simpson for Masterpiece.

Terry Gilliam’s’ long-delayed rendition of The Man Who Killed Don Quixote has taken over twenty-eight years to come to fruition, but alas, after multiple delays, a stroke and, a lawsuit against a release, Gilliam’s film has finally been released for all to see, albeit in an incredibly diluted and sadly quiet fashion. For a film that has almost killed three cast members involved in a life span of thirty years any film of such high esteem and high calibre ought to be worth viewing alone for the pain and pressure that went into realising such a project, but unfortunately, The Man Who Killed Don Quixote is all seemingly inconsequential.

Serial killer dramas have a grimy reputation. The phrase conjures up lurid magazine headlines promising Sick! Twisted! Depravity! and Never-Seen-Before Crime Scene Photos! Think ‘true crime serial killer’, you think of Jack the Ripper tours and David from Psychoville poring over victim stats and working himself to a froth over all the gory details.
To shake off those associations and emerge as nuanced, intelligent and non-exploitative, a drama has to work hard. It has to foreground the human cost and trace a story that doesn’t revel in gore. It requires scripts that build in context and narrative balance. It needs empathy with the victims, and a central performance that captures the horrid anomaly of the killer without lending rock star glamour. Most of all, it needs a purpose other than as a ratings draw.

This Des episode one review contains spoilers.
ITV must be feeling confident about the nation’s emotional resilience. While other channels are scheduling there-there comfort shows to hug us through These Unprecedented Times, ITV brings us the true crime tale of serial killer Dennis Nilsen.
From Monday to Wednesday, ITV’s bedtime story will be about decomposing corpses, boiled human heads and a psyche so unsettling it’ll undermine any faith you had in the kindness of strangers. This is anti-comfort TV, a visit to the psycho zoo where the price of admission gets you a long, hard look into the eyes of a personality gone terribly, terribly wrong. Then on Thursday, it’s topped off with a one-hour documentary featuring real interview footage of Nilsen, so viewers can contrast and compare the drama with the real thing.
Do that, and you’ll see how miraculous is the casting of David Tennant as the lead.

(L-r) Samantha Collins, Jessie Mangum and Laura Scrivano.
While she was studying at the UK’s National Film and Television School six years ago, Australian-British screenwriter Samantha Collins wrote a screenplay about an Australian woman who goes to London in search of her missing sister.
Collins began developing the psychological drama a couple of years ago with another UK-based Aussie expat, producer Jessie Mangum.
Both women admired the works of London-based Italian-Australian filmmaker Laura Scrivano, particularly her short film Alice which starred Sarah Snook, and invited her to join the project.
Now entitled My Sister Ellie, it’s among 13 projects selected for Attagirl, the feature film development lab for female and non-binary creative teams.
Collins’ screenplay follows an Australian woman who abandons her life for a British winter, determined to bring home her pregnant sister, the surrogate of her unborn child. Clutching at clues trailing from London to the Kent coast,...

Almost a year after Gillian Anderson was cast as Margaret Thatcher in “The Crown,” we finally have our first look of the actress as the UK Prime Minister. In the just-released Season 4 trailer, there are three blink-and-you’ll-miss-them shots of an unrecognizable Anderson in Thatcher’s iconic brown wig. “Something as important as the Monarchy simply cannot be allowed to fail,” narrates Olivia Colman‘s Queen Elizabeth II. Watch the trailer above and see photos of Anderson as Thatcher below. “The Crown” Season 4 premieres November 15 on Netflix.

When costume designer Amy Roberts joined “The Crown” for Season 3’s shift to the ’60s and ’70s, alongside the arrival of Olivia Colman’s Queen Elizabeth and Helena Bonham Carter’s Princess Margaret — both Emmy-nominated along with Roberts — she had quite a steep learning curve: “I needed to get used to ‘The Crown’s’ DNA,” she said. “It’s such a vast project…logistically [with two costume units shooting simultaneously] and creatively.”
But after studying Peter Morgan’s “grand opera” about the royal family and immersing herself in the historical research, Roberts eventually got the particular DNA. “It’s that balance of the gritty reality of the history with the glamorous, stylized view of that world, which Peter Morgan [brought],” she said. Mainly, though, it’s about the relationship between the good sister (Elizabeth) and the bad sister (Margaret), which culminates in the memorable season finale (“Cri de Coeur”), for which Roberts is nominated.

Exclusive: ITV has commissioned an extended second season of its odd-couple detective series McDonald & Dodds, starring Jason Watkins (The Crown) and Tala Gouveia (Cold Feet).
Mammoth Screen, the producer behind the upcoming BBC/Netflix series The Serpent, will produce another three feature-length episodes of ITV’s crime-of-the-week murder mystery drama. The first season, watched by 6.4M people, was just two episodes long.
It features BAFTA-winner Watkins as Detective Sergeant Dodds, a modest and unassuming figure, who is thrown together with Detective Chief Inspector Lauren McDonald, a feisty crime fighter from the London’s Metropolitan Police.
McDonald & Dodds is set against the backdrop of the historic British city of Bath, in south-west England, and is created and executive produced by Shetland writer Robert Murphy.
The three new episodes will be directed by Alex Pillai (Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina), Rebecca Rycroft (Malory Towers) and Ian Aryeh (In The Long Run).

Peter Morgan had two more weeks of shooting on “The Crown” Season 4 when the pandemic shut down the Netflix series. And he never looked back. As post-production forged ahead, the showrunner and his editors had to figure out how to finish the last episodes.
“One day I’ll tell you what holes were missing,” Morgan said on the phone from London. “Hopefully you won’t notice. I’ve done my best. For the final block, one director [Jessica Hobbs] was filming three separate episodes. A couple of scenes were missing from each one. Having looked at them, we [could] just about get away with it. She will forever rue not being able to shoot them. The price of waiting would have meant to not get the show out on the same schedule. And nobody to whom I’ve shown the episodes can tell what’s missing. I’m really relieved. I was neurotic of course,...

Mel and Sue have gone from “Bake Off” to bump off.
Many viewers will recognize Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins from their pun-tastic days hosting “The Great British Baking Off,” but the duo have been in the business of pratting around on screen and stage together for over three decades.
Their latest adventure as a pair of bumbling assassins in Peacock’s “Hitmen” represents in some ways a dramatic departure from the “sweet and fluffy” halcyon days of “Bake Off.” However, fans of their infectious camaraderie needn’t worry. Perkins reassures that their trademark “pissing about” is still a key ingredient of this batter, just sub in bullets for chocolate chips.
“It was nice to do something which was so radically different from ‘Bake Off’ and to surprise people,” says Giedroyc. “You don’t often get the chance to do that in life, you get a bit pigeonholed and people just think,...
